Living: Chapter 15
Last Time…
Severus stood up and walked over to Harry. His hand cupped Harry's chin, "May I look into your mind Potter?" The pieces appeared to be finally clicking together for Harry. He gave a slight nod to his professor. "I promise this won't be painful this time." Harry grimaced at his words thinking back to fifth year when Snape tried to train him in Occlumency.
"Legilimens" the words were spoken softly while Hermione watched the two most important men in her life actually trying to work together. She could see that whatever Severus was seeing was not a good thing. Harry was also trying hard to withstand his mind once again being invaded. Hermione knew, that if there was anyone here at Hogwarts who could figure out the workings of the mind, it was Professor Severus Snape.
After a few minutes, Severus stepped back and Harry slumped forward with his head in his hands. "Well?" Hermione couldn't hold back her question, even though she knew in her heart what he was going to say.
Severus stood there with pinched lips, "Congratulations Mr. Potter, you've been Obliviated."
Xxxxxxxxx
"Obliviated? Really?" Harry Potter sat there in stunned disbelief. Hermione shook her head not believing what Severus had just revealed. The whole situation kept getting worse, day after day, hour after hour.
"Yes, Potter…Obliviated." Severus repeated himself with a grumble. Hermione knew he sounded gruff with Harry, but it was just his way of covering his own anxiety about the situation. Severus walked away from Harry to stand by the fireplace.
"Someone is covering their tracks too well." Hermione stated not looking at either man at the moment.
"This leads me to think we are not dealing with a student, but a mature wizard." Severus turned back around to speak his view on matters.
"But Severus, the only adults, besides we eighth years here at Hogwarts are the professors. I can't think of one that would be blackmailing me and you, and attacking Harry." Hermione plopped back down on the couch her hands clutched together.
"Come on Hermione. You know as well as I do that students can cause harm. Just remember what Draco did in sixth year?" Harry shouted out, swaying a bit as he came to sit by her on the couch.
"It's not Draco." Severus stated matter-of-factly.
"How do you know that Snape?" Harry barked back at the professor who only glared at him when he heard Harry's tone of voice.
Severus stormed back to Harry, "I know this because not only have I been watching Draco, but I put a tracking spell on him at the beginning of the year at Narcissa's request."
Harry looked at Severus with an unbelieving stare. "Really? Why would she want that?"
"Well Potter, just because the war is over and The Dark Lord is dead, doesn't mean there aren't any stray Death Eaters running around causing trouble. You should know this especially after what's been happening this week." Severus was definitely in lecture mode now. "The Malfoys turned and helped the light at the final battle. Draco is probably on many a Death Eaters list, as you also are apparently."
Harry sat not saying a word, but looking very disgruntled at Snape's words. Hermione knew that he couldn't argue with Severus's facts.
"I still think that every student in our year and every professor needs to be watched." Harry said. "Even Draco Malfoy needs to be scrutinized. Everyone is guilty until they can be ruled out…the three of us being the exceptions."
Severus stood silently contemplating what Harry said. "Agreed Potter. From here forth, we'll look at everyone in this school. Do you still have that cloak of your fathers?"
Harry looked up at Severus with a flushed face. "Yes. How do you know about the invisibility cloak?"
Severus sneered at Harry, "Your father and his friends were always getting away with mayhem and I decided to follow them one night. After they'd snuck out of Gryffindor Tower I saw James pull the cloak out and disappear before heading out the front door." He told the story with the same sour face he always had when speaking of Harry's father.
"It explained very much why they were able to sneak up on me and attack before I could try to defend myself." Snape stood tall with his arms folded across his chest.
Hermione noticed that for once, Harry looked downward and quite contrite when Severus was talking about his father. If Harry was anything, he was fair when it came to battling others and didn't like cheats. It was amazing in the long run that Severus had ever helped Harry as much as he did while at Hogwarts, especially since he was a carbon copy of James, except for the eyes. If it hadn't been for Severus's love for Lily, he probably wouldn't have been so willing to help. There were so many things that contributed to the man that Severus Snape had become. Her heart hurt for the man, but she'd never share these feelings with him. He never took kindly to someone showing him pity.
Severus looked over at Hermione with narrowed eyes, and she turned her head. She didn't want him questioning her about the look of sympathy she had been directing towards him.
"Potter, you need to wear the cloak as much as possible, other than in classes. Use silencing charms to wander about and just observe. This is our best course of action." Severus continued, "By all means I do not want Hermione wandering about by herself."
Hermione sighed, "I hate to think that Harry has to be my babysitter."
"It's better to have a babysitter than to be dead Hermione." Severus walked over to her and reached out to pull her up against him. His arms went around her and he lifted her chin up to look at him. "Please do this for me. I can't be with you every second of the day. Potter has a better chance of being there for you right now."
Hermione noticed that this almost pained him to say this to her. Severus could be very protective of what belonged to him. For him to turn her safety over to the one person that had been vexing him for years; she knew truly how important this was to him.
"Yes, Severus, I will let Harry stay close by me." Her eyes looked deeply into his. They gleamed with so many things: worry, concern, and longing. He had never seemed more handsome to her than at that moment. She closed her eyes as his lips headed towards hers. They pressed deeply against hers, while his hand held her head steady. The kiss lasted until Harry cleared his throat rather loudly on the couch.
"We need to head back to Gryffindor Tower Sir." Harry walked towards them. "When do you want to meet with us next?"
Severus looked at Hermione and then to Harry. "I'll let Hermione tell you when." His hand did one more glide over her cheek and through her curly hair. Hermione gave him a sad smile back. All she wanted to do was be with this man and live in peace. Now here they were trying to figure out another mystery before someone else ended up dead.
Harry walked to the door waiting for Hermione, watching his professor with his best friend. His face was patient and kind, no more showing disgust at seeing these two people together.
As Hermione walked towards Harry, Severus called out, "Be careful love."
Hermione blushed, nodded, and replied softly, "I will Severus." Harry grinned as they left the room.
"He seems different now," Harry said.
"Maybe he's always been this way and you are the one that has changed Harry." Hermione replied back to her friend.
Harry gave a low laugh, grabbing her hand, "Maybe so, maybe so."

When Harry and Hermione made it back to the tower, it was very late at night. The fire was fading in the grate of the old fireplace. It cast a low glow barely able to light up the room. As they snuck in quietly, a voice startled them.
"Where have you two been sneaking off to?" The accusation was harsh as Ron spat out the words. "It used to be all three of us that would go sneaking about. Now I never get an invite."
Hermione hung back behind Harry. She was tired and in no mood to battle Ron right now. "Is there something going on between you? Harry, should Ginny be worried about you and Hermione?" The glow of the fire made Ron's face appear more fierce than normal. His eyes wandered down to where Harry and Hermione were still holding hands and he glared at them.
Hermione noticed where he was looking and quickly unraveled their hands and folded her arms. Harry stood in front of Ron pushing him away from his face, the rough shove knocking the redhead to the ground.
"What the fuck Harry?" Ron jumped up grabbing the front of Harry's shirt. "Am I hitting too close to home?"
"No you sorry ass! There is nothing going on between me and Hermione." Harry's green eyes were dark and blazing. "I wanted to make sure that she made it up to the common room without being hurt."
With confusion Ron asked, "What are you getting on about Harry? Who's after Hermione?" Harry took some deep breaths, and walked Hermione over to the sofa before turning back around to Ron.
"I was attacked last night somewhere in the castle." Hermione noticed that Harry left out what had exactly happened. She was puzzled why he was leaving out the true details. "Hermione and…uh, she's gotten some threatening notes. We have no clue who's behind this."
Hermione looked from Harry to Ron to gauge her other friends' reaction. Ron stood grimly as he tried to process what Harry had said. "Blimey…why didn't you tell me before?" His tone implied a little hurt and confusion. "I guess our trio really has been ripped apart, haven't we?"
Hermione started to get up, but stopped at a harsh look Harry gave her as he shook his head. She crumpled back onto the sofa, her heart troubled by what was happening in this room. Even though Ron had been nothing but a git towards her since they came back to Hogwarts, she still was hoping that their friendship could somehow be saved.
Ron waited for a moment thinking an apology was coming. When neither Harry nor Hermione said a word, he cussed again and turned to head up to his room. "Tossers both of you!"
The tears started rolling down Hermione's face. Harry stood clenching his fists and gritting his teeth.
"Why didn't you tell him the truth Harry? Is even Ron on the suspect list?" Her words came out choppy as her voice was shaking with her crying.
Harry ran a hand through his hair and sat down next to her. "Snape said to trust no one, and I'm sure that includes Ron." He reached over to dry the tears that were trickling down her cheeks. "Anyhow, after how he's treated you this year, I didn't think you would mind." He tried to give her a smile that came out as a lopsided smirk.
"It's fine Harry. You're right that Severus would have been murderous if we'd had told Ron about what is truly happening. My emotions lately have gotten in the way of my thinking."
Harry pulled Hermione into him as he leaned back into the sofa. His arm was curled protectively around her. He may not be in love with her, but he still loved her deeply and would do anything to keep her safe. Severus had been right in trusting her safety with her friend. Hermione knew this and loved both her wizard and Harry for extending a truce to help her.
Looking up at Harry she said, "You know, you truly are going to make an amazing auror some day. You know how to take charge and have learned how to keep your emotions under control…thank the Gods." Harry turned to look at her and raised an eyebrow. Hermione cleared her throat, "Umm fifth year, remember?"
Harry laughed and hugged her tighter, "Yes, I remember. The year of the over-emotional Harry Potter with the perpetual frown on his face. In my defense, I did have an ugly, evil, snake-man who wanted me dead." Harry's definition of Voldemort made Hermione giggle.
Hermione laid her head on Harry's chest, "I hope that this year's mess has nothing to do with that hideous creature that should be dead." Harry's hand started stroking through her wild curls.
"Go to sleep Hermione. We'll figure out more tomorrow, but I'm really knackered tonight." The last thing Hermione remembered was feeling the warmth from Harry's body as he held her and feeling very safe.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The shriek that woke them up the next morning left both Harry and Hermione's ears ringing. "Harry Potter! Why are you sleeping on the couch with one of my supposedly best friends?"
Harry groaned while Hermione sat up quickly knocking Harry in the mouth. "Shite Hermione." Harry reached up to his mouth checking for blood.
"It's not what you think Gin, I promise." Hermione ran over to her only girlfriend and grabbed her hands trying to quiet her. "Honestly there's nothing going on. You know who I'm involved with...remember?"
Harry came up behind Ginny putting his arms around her and nuzzled her neck. "You know how much I love you." Harry kissed her neck while Ginny melted in his arms.
"Ginny, Harry was attacked last night." Hermione decided she needed to clue her in on what was going on since she knew more than anyone else at this point, besides Harry.
Ginny wretched out of Harry's grasp accidentally hitting his mouth in the process. "Fucking hell, not again." Harry held his hand to his mouth, which now was indeed truly bleeding.
"Harry where were you attacked? Are you OK?" Ginny started patting Harry down all over his body. Harry laughed as she was touching some ticklish spots. "Harry it's not funny!"
"Gin I'm not laughing because of the attack. You know how ticklish I am." Harry and Ginny started grinning at each other.
Hermione watching, turned her head thinking she really wasn't interested in knowing exactly where Harry was ticklish. She felt somehow this would all go back to something sexual if it involved them.
Soon they sat down, after casting Muffliato, and they shared the whole story with Ginny. Her eyes were focused straight ahead. "This isn't ever going to end, is it?" Harry pulled her into his arms, much as he had the night before with Hermione. For someone who'd grown up with not much love, he'd learned how to comfort those he loved and cared about.
"We'll figure this out Ginny. Now there are four of us." Harry said as he rubbed circles on her back.
"What about Ron? Why aren't we bringing him into this?" Ginny seemed more curious than put out about her brother being left out of the loop.
Hermione and Harry looked at one another. The silence answered Ginny's question before either of her friends could. Finally Hermione stepped forward, "Severus wants as few people as possible to know what's really happening. Ron knows a few things, but not all of it." She looked down at her feet then back up to Ginny, "Unfortunately that excludes Ron from the full truth."
"You don't think he'd do something like this do you?" She looked at her with wide eyes.
"We're not sure what to think, but after the threatening notes and Harry being attacked, we don't want to take any chances." Hermione tried not to wring her hands, "I'm so sorry Gin, please understand."
Ginny searched her friend's face and then did the same to Harry. "I trust you both. I know Ron hasn't been acting like himself since we've all come back to school. I'll stay quiet for now."
Hermione rushed over to hug Ginny with a smile on her face. "Thank you for believing in us." Looking over at Harry he also looked relieved. There was no way he wanted to mess things up with Ginny now that he had her back. Hermione knew how much it had killed him to let her go during the war.
"I'm heading upstairs to take a much needed shower." Hermione almost skipped up the stairs.
Harry turned to Ginny after Hermione had left, "Does it disturb you like it disturbs me that she's sucking face with Professor Snape?" The sour look on his face made Ginny giggle.
"No, Harry James Potter it doesn't. I think they suit each other very well," Her wide smile only made Harry sneer.
"Wait a minute…you already knew, didn't you?" Harry started tickling her. "Why didn't you tell me or at least warn me?"
"I couldn't Harry because I took a vow I'd say nothing." Ginny held Harry's hands in hers to stop the tickling.
"Are you serious?" Now Harry was the one in shock. "The Greasy Git has all of us keeping secrets from each other." This only made Ginny laugh more.
"How about we clean up your bloody mouth, and then go eat some brunch?" Ginny ran her finger over Harry's swollen lip.
"Anything you say." Harry kissed Ginny's fingers with a wince. "Come on." He grabbed Ginny's hand and led her out of Gryffindor Tower.

A fist came flying forward, crashing into the face of the man cowering in a corner. "I bloody well told you not to do much damage to him. Do you not understand simple things?"
"I did what I thought I needed to do!' The other man came back kicking out his feet to trip the first man. He fell down on his face, his chin hitting the wall.
"Well, you need to quit thinking and let me be in charge. With all of your bungling you'll foul things up." The man jumped up, wiping the blood off his chin. He pulled his wand out and shoved it into the shorter man's chest. "I told you we're working against very intelligent people. If we slip up they'll find out."
"Ok, ok. You're in charge, but you need to point that thing somewhere else." He pushed the wand away from him. "I still think this whole plan is crazy stirring up trouble against Snape." He started to walk away.
A hand reached out to stop him, "I'm not paying you to think. Just remember that."
With a nod and a growl, the second man left muttering curses under his breath.
"If he ruins this for me I'm going to kill him!"

Hmmm….who could it be? It may be someone apparent or it may be a complete surprise who's behind this. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
