Chapter Fourteen
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed all your suffering
As the battle raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms –
‘Brothers in Arms’ – Dire Straits
Harry’s feet moved without conscious thought. He ran with all the speed he could muster. He heard little more than the sound of his trainers on the grass and his pounding heart, his breathe steamed in the night air as he focussed solely upon the large shadow of the Whomping Willow. He could hear the others running with him, their breathing heavy and ragged. He wanted to look around to see if they were being followed but forced himself not to, he knew that if he took so much as a second to hesitate he would succumb to the lure of the Dementors. He would be utterly helpless to stop them from swooping down on him like a massive black cloud, he knew that if he stopped he would be worse than dead. So, he continued to run like he had never run before. The tree loomed out of the darkness like a massive wraith, its branches unmoving. He felt hope blossom in his chest as they drew ever closer, they were going to make it.
He felt it before he heard it. It was as if fingers of ice were slithering down his spine, he gasped and stumbled, nearly falling to his knees. His heart nearly froze. He heard a yelp and a helpless groan before there was a soft thud. Terror clenched at his chest and he was unable to resist the urge to look around, he was only just outside the range of the Willow’s dangerous branches. So close to safety. He turned slowly, his heart hammering desperately in his chest as he tried to steel himself for what he would see.
“JAMES NO!”
The scream made Harry’s legs go weak at the knees, he spun around completely and saw a scene that made his hands and heart go numb. His father was on all fours, his head bowed as a massive swarm of dark cloaked figures swooped in the air above him. He looked so small and helpless that Harry felt a sudden flash of pure, unadulterated fury.
Sirius screamed again, his voice tearing his throat with its power. “JAMES! JAMES GET UP YOU ARSE HOLE!” He lifted a shaking hand, gripping his wand so tightly in his fist that his knuckles turned white. He aimed it at the Dementors and tried desperately to summon his happiest memory…but he could only come up with visions of blood. Blood, screams, terror…he gasped in a breath, unable to scream any longer. His arm trembled. “Jamie…” He whispered hoarsely as he watched his friend lift his head, his face was white beneath the shock of black hair. His eyes were too big and his mouth was set in a pained grimace. The Dementors closed in, their breathing was hideously loud and Sirius’ arm began to become too heavy. His wand seemed to weigh a tonne, slowly, ever so slowly, it fell to his side and he released it from numb fingers. Fog began to cloud his vision, his body weakening rapidly as he felt clammy, freezing fingers close around his throat. “J-Jamie…” He muttered sluggishly as his vision was filled with a hooded face, a face in which a gaping maw opened wide.
Remus crouched, his arms covering his head as black shapes swooped and dived excitedly above him. He was tense as he fought desperately with the terrible memories assaulting his senses. He could smell the terror, the blood. He could hear screams echoing in his mind like lost souls. He could see faces, unknown men and women and children, all sneering at him and calling him degrading names. Filthy words issued from innocent mouths. Remembered loneliness caressed his soul like a long lost lover. Fear and pain and that terrible, beautiful silver disc that was the moon.
Harry watched his friends, his only family, being attacked. He watched as Sirius’ body slumped, his wand falling from his fingers as all the fight left him. He saw his father’s trembling body being pulled off of the ground by scabrous hands. Slowly, without thought, he lifted his wand. A frown of anger darkened his features, his lips peeled back to reveal his teeth and his eyes flashed like precious stones. He was going to lose it all again. Everything he had thought he had regained; Sirius, Remus…his father…all of it was going to ripped from his grasping fingers. He couldn’t let it happen. He wouldn’t allow it. Never again. “EXPECTO PATRONUM!” He screamed, his voice echoing through the grounds as if he had cast a spell on it. Silver light burst from the tip of the phoenix feather wand and formed a massive stag, it took off in a blur of pure light. Without any direction it attacked the dementors, forcing them to flee before it’s purity. Harry stared in shocked awe at the power of his patronus as it galloped towards his father, the last to be freed. He watched as the dark forms scattered before his spell, it reached James Potter and reared proudly as the clouds of Dementors flew as far away as they could.
Sirius lay, curled into a tight ball with his arms covering his head as tears streamed down his cheeks. He could feel warmth slowly returning to his extremities and slowly, very slowly, he began to uncurl himself. He sat up and looked around, blinking in the strange silvery light that now surrounded them. “J-Jam-Jamie…” Sirius gasped, he struggled to his feet, swaying as he searched for the source of the light. He found it and felt his mouth fall open. Harry was stood by the tree, surrounded by a nimbus of pure, white light. A huge Stag danced and pawed at the ground restlessly, on Harry’s face was thunderous anger. His wand was slowly being lowered to his side but he held his head high and his hair blew around his face as if a fierce wind were blowing. Sirius felt his heart skip a beat as bright, beautifully emerald eyes met his. His throat went dry and he gazed mutely at the figure before him.
Remus staggered to his feet, gasping quietly as he fought off the effects of the Dementors. He turned and spotted James’ limp form, he pushed aside the questions about the source of the terrible yet beautiful light to deal with later, and instead moved to his friends side. He fell to his knees and rolled James over, his face was white, his lips almost blue but he was breathing and his hands twitched a little. Remus lifted his wand and whispered the revival spell, James gasped and his eyes sprung open, he gave a tiny, broken moan as he registered Remus’ presence. Remus felt a shaky smile of relief tug at his lips, he pushed James’ glasses back onto his nose and laughed breathlessly. “Thank Merlin for small mercies.”
Sirius stumbled as his legs threatened to give out from beneath him, he regained his feet and began making his slow way towards his friends who were now encased in that comforting silver glow. When he reached them, James was sitting up with Remus’ help, Sirius felt a grin on his face as he knelt and pulled both James and Remus into a tight embrace. “Oh…oh fuck…” He gasped, choking on the unutterable emotions that filled him like sweet water. “That was too close…way too close…”
“’m ok…” James muttered, his voice thick and sluggish as he tried to force his tongue back into action. His hands and face were beginning to warm again as he held his friends close. “I’ll…be alright…”
“What happened? What’s causing this light?” Remus asked softly, his eyes swimming with unshed tears of relief.
Sirius turned slowly and stared over his shoulder at a dark figure who was slowly moving towards them. “Harry. Harry did it.” He said slowly.
Remus followed Sirius’ gaze and his eyes widened as the silver stag escorted Harry towards them. “H-Harry?” James sat up straight and his eyes widened behind his broken glasses as his eyes landed on the son who had never been born. “This is…this is a…”
“Miracle?” Sirius suggested.
“He must be as powerful as Dumbledore…” Remus whispered in awed respect.
Harry reached them and knelt at James’ side. “Are…are you all alright?” He asked in concern.
“Yeah…thanks to you.” Sirius replied and smiled. “Nice spell work.”
Harry shrugged. “I learnt how to do a Patronus in my third year.” He said, absently waving it away with one hand.
“But Harry…this is an extremely powerful Patronus…none of us could have driven away so many Dementors.” James muttered, gazing at his son with huge eyes.
Harry wrinkled his nose a little. “I did when I was thirteen…look, we don’t really have time for this.” He looked at Sirius who was staring at him in a disconcerting way, after a second he turned back to his father. “Can you walk?”
James nodded and slowly got to his feet, he picked up his wand and stuffed it inside his robes again. “Come on, let’s get out of here, we’ve just given away our location.”
Remus glanced over his shoulder and watched as lights began to go on in the castle, he took a breath and turned back to his friends. “Let’s go then.”
Sirius nodded in agreement and stood up, he winced as he put weight on one of his ankles. “Shit.” He cursed. “I think I sprained something…”
“Here…” Harry slipped under his arm and helped him stand upright. “Put some of your weight on me.”
Sirius leaned against Harry, he felt the heat of his body and hid a smile behind the curtain of his hair. “Ok, I’m ready.” He said softly.
Together they began making their way towards the ominously swaying branches of the Whomping Willow.
END NOTE: Hi, me again. :) Just to say that Harry is not all powerful here, I am just repeating what happened in his third year when he tried to save Sirius from the Dementors. The difference is is that now he is much older and I believe that his magic would have matured along with him. What galvanises him is the threat to his friends and his righteous anger lends more power to his spell. In this story he is not as powerful as Dumbledore, he is simply given strength by the fear for his friends safety and the fear of losing something so precious again…in much the same way that Muggle’s will suddenly find impossible strength when they attempt to say, save a child trapped beneath a car. I hope that’s cleared that up.
