“I knew it was too good to be true,” Hermione said, not really sure if she meant it or not. Being trapped in the room was cruel, but what awaited them outside the door might be even more so.
“Yeah,” Draco said. “Just another test.”
“Test?” Hermione asked, studying the door frame.
“Think about it. Everything we’ve managed to get from the room was because we worked together.”
Hermione frowned, thinking back on their time in the room. They’d gotten the bluebell flame because they were both tired of being in the dark. They’d gotten the chamber pot when they both had to use the loo. They were both thirsty when they got the drinking glass, and only one at that. They had to use it together. The food was the same. And the tub…they both were mourning the fact that they couldn’t bathe. And the bed… She blushed.
Draco caught it and smirked. “I think you got it.”
“Enough,” Hermione huffed. “Why now though? Why open the door but not let us out?”
“Because we want out.” Draco paused for a second. “And we don’t.”
Hermione hung her head but had to agree. “So it gave us a way to look out but not get out.”
“Looks that way.”
“But I really do not want to be cooped up in her any longer,” she whispered.
“But do you want to deal with everything that going out entails?” he asked softly.
“As entertaining as this all is,” Snape drawled, interrupting them from their conversation, “I am afraid I have someplace to be. So, if you would be so kind as to move.”
“What?” Hermione asked, still startled by the vampire’s sudden entrance in their conversation. She hadn’t thought he could hear them.
Snape huffed in irritation. “Move out of the way so I can enter.”
The two shocked students backed further into the room, flabbergasted when their Potion’s Master managed to strut through the door without so much as a flinch. How in the devil had he done that? They rushed behind him, feeling the invisible shield in place. Was he stuck now too?
“Stop that nonsense,” Snape snapped. “It won’t allow you through it.”
“What’s going on?” Draco asked, stalking across the room and throwing himself into one of the chairs.
Snape sniffed and sat in the opposite chair. “One of Dumbledore’s incredibly meddlesome experiments I imagine.”
“What?” Hermione asked in shock. “Why would he do that?”
Snape snorted. “Why wouldn’t he? Suffice it to say, I haven’t been able to figure out if he meant for this to happen or not. He merely confessed to planning on both of you helping him in the hopes that your animosity would wane with teamwork. I see it has.” He took a delicate sniff of the air and smirked. “Even further than he could have hoped for.”
Hermione colored and sat down hard on the bed.
“So he’s the reason we are trapped in here?” Draco asked.
“No,” Snape said. “Apparently, he underestimated the magic of this room. Everything that has happened so far has been on this room’s terms. Only I have been able to hear your plight, and perhaps the werewolf. The room appears to have muffled sound past the ability for humans to hear.”
“Did Harry get my message?” Hermione asked.
“Rest assured Miss Granger, Potter has been throwing his weight around, so to speak. The room has resisted all efforts to reach you, except for Dobby of course. And he says that he is unable to send you return messages, something about the castle binding his tongue.”
“So the room wants us to stay,” Draco said.
“It does,” Snape said. “Though I would have thought that after last night, it would be satisfied.”
Draco cleared his throat uncomfortably. “It did give us some accommodations. Up until then, there was no actual loo, tub, chairs, or even a bed.”
Snape gave him a nasty smirk. “The room rewarded your efforts then.”
“That’s enough,” Draco growled. “It’s no one’s business what happened.”
“My lips are sealed,” Snape said, with feigned innocence.
“Until such a time you see fit as to blackmail me,” Draco said darkly and crossed his arms.
Hermione frowned. She’d seen Draco bow up more times than she could count in the last few weeks, but now he almost seemed to close in on himself. It was happening already, his armor clicking in place. It made her sick to her stomach. There was something else though, something she didn’t think a lot of other people generally caught. Snape looked sad, so incredibly sad as he stared soberly at Draco. The war had left scars on everyone it seemed.
“I would never use your private feelings against you Draco,” Snape said quietly. “I know all too well how that feels.”
Draco seemed to visibly crumble under the weight of the vampire’s soft words. Hermione’s heart went out to both of them in that moment. She was probably the only person besides Harry who knew Snape’s true motivations in the war. She wasn’t sure Snape even knew she knew. Harry had let her see the memories before he returned them, thanked the vampire, and respectfully gave him space. She still held hope that the two men could work it out. They needed each other, whether they knew it or not.
“How did you even get in here?” Draco asked finally.
“I got in last night when the door opened.”
“We never heard you,” Hermione said.
“I would imagine you wouldn’t have,” Snape said, another of his evil smirks firmly in place. She wanted to crawl under the bed. “However, you were both sound asleep when I entered. Mr. Potter tried the second the door clicked open. He was thrown into the far wall. I, on the other hand, waited until he gave up and entered easily.”
“Do you think it’s because you aren’t human?” Hermione asked.
“No,” Snape said. “I believe it was because I had no intentions of trying to help you escape. I had tried when you were first trapped. I was also blocked from entering.”
“Makes sense,” Hermione said. “It was only after I reassured the room that I had no intentions of harming it when I conjured the fire.”
Snape nodded. “I thought as much.”
“Why didn’t you wake us then?” Draco asked.
“What would the point be? You were both sleeping peacefully. I remember how elusive those moments of rest were. It seemed futile to disrupt it.”
“How long have you been a vampire?” Hermione asked suddenly.
“I was turned shortly after the Tri-Wizard tournament,” Snape said, shifting uncomfortably.
“Any thoughts on how we can get out of here then?” Draco asked. “We’re going to go barmy. There’s absolutely nothing to do.”
“Well, I wouldn’t say that,” Snape said smugly, reveling in making Draco squirm. “However, I would say that the room is giving you more allowances. You should ask it. And you both missed your midterms. If you like, I could try to bring them in.”
“Please,” Hermione gasped.
Draco rolled his eyes at her enthusiasm. “Might as well. Thank you.”
Snape nodded. “I shall return later. Potter will be delighted to know you aren’t dead.”
AN: What does everyone think of the return of Snape? Poor uncomfortable kids. *not so sympathetic look* I'm glad you guys are glad they aren't getting out. The next few chapters will be sort of tame and sweet and then BAM. So sit tight and be patient.
Holy cow guys. I got so many reviews I did the snoopy happy dance! As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. They made my muse sing. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... Love you guys!
