About a month from the end of the term, Snape feels his Mark grow warm and hastens to meet the Dark Lord. When he arrives, the hall is full; and Voldemort steps up and addresses them, saying, “The time has come, at last. Draco Malfoy has given us a way into Hogwarts, and some of you will be going there tonight, to take out Dumbledore. Bellatrix has the kill…” (Voldemort had first offered it to Snape, but Snape had declined, saying he really had nothing against the man and wouldn’t take any pleasure in it himself. He had added that he thought Voldemort should salve Bella’s pride a bit, since she’d been very depressed after he’d taken a consort. He’d also told Voldemort that Dumbledore was dying from a curse already, so the kill would be more for pride than actual accomplishment; but she wouldn’t know that, or need to know it.)
“…A few days after we’ve taken Hogwarts, our target will be the Ministry itself. I believe we will have control of both within a matter of days. Remain here if you wish while the party sets out for Hogwarts; if they succeed, we shall have a celebration.”
Snape decides to remain there, he knows that tonight the plan is only to take Dumbledore out and the students will not be in danger. As soon as the Ministry is also taken, he’ll have no need to hide his loyalties; so his absence tonight won’t be an issue for long. He’ll go back as soon as the party returns.
He sits with Narcissa Malfoy, who is worried sick about Draco, and tries to reassure her that Draco will be fine; he’s already done what he was tasked with and is in favor even if the effort tonight should fail for some reason. After an hour or so, the party returns, triumphant; Dumbledore is dead. Snape returns to Hogwarts, feeling neither particularly happy nor sad; it was necessary for his Master’s ambitions and would have happened fairly soon anyway even without them.
In the coming days he says little to anyone, just waiting for the next hammer blow to fall; and a few days later, it does. The Death Eaters take over the Ministry completely; and when the Order shows up to fight them, Potter, Granger and Sirius Black are taken captive. Mad-Eye Moody, Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt are killed; and Snape knows that the Order is basically finished, with Dumbledore also gone. Lupin and the Weasleys are not really natural leaders, and the heart will have gone out of them with Potter’s capture especially. Voldemort names Albert Runcorn Minister of Magic, after he takes his vows as a Death Eater.
When the order from the Ministry naming him Headmaster of Hogwarts arrives by owl, Snape goes to see McGonagall first. He shows her the order and she glares at him, suspecting his loyalty. He sits down and says, “Yes, Minerva; I am still a Death Eater. I am still loyal to the Dark Lord. I am fairly certain that Dumbledore knew it as well. He kept me here to keep an eye on me, but I am pretty sure he wasn’t fooled; except by the fact that the Dark Lord did not actually use me as the vector to gain control of the school. I have come here to suggest that you may wish to find another teaching post; somewhere far away. Beauxbatons perhaps - they could use you, I’m sure. I’m not dismissing you, I am actually here out of respect for you; I know you will not like the changes that will come here.”
She shakes her head as if to negate his words, and he says, “I think the writing is on the wall, Minerva; even if Potter should survive his captivity, I suspect that what the Dark Lord will leave of his mind will leave him fit for nothing more than a bed at St. Mungo’s mental ward. I could not save him from that, even if I wanted to. The resistance is broken and you know it; best to go, now, while you still can. And you should probably convince Flitwick and Sprout to go with you.”
Minerva finally finds her voice and says, “Severus – how could you serve someone like that, someone so cruel and heartless?”
Snape shrugs and says, “Because in a way, he’s right. Oh, not about pure-bloods; in fact pure-bloods are partially responsible for making him feel the way he does. What he really wants is power, and even more than that – respect. Respect from Muggles, who right now don’t even know we exist and who we have to hide from like rats slinking around in the walls. And respect from pure-bloods, who see half-bloods as if the accident of our parentage automatically makes us sub-standard.”
“He really doesn’t care about Muggle-borns as much as he makes it sound, and the fact that pure-bloods think he stands for them is actually in a way his little revenge, or will be. He has a method in mind but I aim to change it; I think that he can have what he wants without the need for any more blood to be shed. And what he really wants is, respect for all wizards according to their ability, regardless of their parentage; and acknowledgement of our superiority and talents from the Muggle world, so that we no longer have to treat our abilities like a dirty little secret. It will take a few generations to accomplish, but he’s patient enough for what I plan to suggest, I believe.”
“And what is that, might I ask?”
“I plan to share it only with him, Minerva. When I feel he’s ready to hear it. As for the school, he’s given me a free hand with it and I don’t actually plan for it to become an overly hostile place; but some things will be allowed and taught here that I am sure you would not approve of. So, again, I suggest that you leave while you can. I know that this school and its students mean everything to you, and I think you will lose heart if you remain here rather than taking your talents somewhere that the Dark Lord does not control.”
He adds with a slight, sad smile, “Besides; it’s easier for you to help plan and organize a resistance from outside, anyway. Here, you already know that you’ll be watched like a hawk. I fully expect a resistance; which is another reason I want to try to change the Dark Lord’s aim to the same end goal. Oppression just fuels more resistance. Being patient and garnering a majority to your side, or even creating one in time, is much more likely to succeed.”
Minerva says, “I don’t know which of the two of you is the more dangerous at this point, Severus. And I don’t know whether to hope that you can rein him in, or that you can’t. I do however, and with great reluctance, have to agree with you. I probably can do more for ‘my side’ elsewhere, as you say. And if I hear that you have been mistreating students, trust that you will be my target exclusively when the next showdown comes.”
“I wouldn’t expect any less, Minerva. I hope it never comes to that. You may count on glowing references if you need them, but I doubt very much that Madame Maxime would even ask you for them.”
“Probably not. And as you suggested, I shall also talk with Flitwick and Sprout. What about Hagrid and Trelawney?”
“I intend to keep Hagrid as gameskeeper if he wants to remain, and also intend to give him a freer hand with whatever creatures he wishes to keep; I think some of the prior Ministry’s restrictions were a bit over the top. He can also be assistant professor to Grubbly-Plank; she is a rather practical woman who hasn’t really taken sides either way, and I expect she’ll want to remain here. As for Sybil, well; she’s harmless and rarely leaves her tower. Divination is always a good subject for the fluff-heads anyway.” Minerva is privately amused, her opinion of Divination has always been much the same.
Snape gets up and pauses at the door, saying, “Farewell, Minerva. It will be very difficult to replace you. By the way, if you should happen to run across Lupin…tell him that he is free to come talk to me if times get desperate for him.”
Minerva looks somewhat gratified at his acknowledgement of her abilities as a teacher, and then very confused by his comment about Lupin; he knows Lupin is a member of the Order and besides, they never liked one another anyway. But, she will pass on the message, whatever it means to either of them.
Snape goes to the Headmaster’s office, and directs the house-elves to box up Dumbledore’s things for now, and move in some of his things from his dungeon office and bedroom. Some things he’ll have to move himself, they’re too dangerous to entrust to house-elves. He expects Voldemort to arrive soon and expects that he’ll be taking Lavender with him when he leaves. He also expects to have to resist some suggestions from the Dark Lord as gently as he can; for example there is no way he wants Bellatrix to have a position here. Or Fenrir.
He would actually love to have Lupin back despite their mutual dislike, if he could find a way to get him to give up the idea of resistance and just return to his love of teaching. Snape chuckles as he thinks to himself that there will be no need to have a Defense Against the Dark Arts class any longer anyway; but Lupin would be good in any teaching post, he was quite a natural. Slughorn will probably stay for a few more years, he still is more interested in collecting ‘celebrities’ than he is in which side is in power. He might be able to convince the Dark Lord to let Karkaroff earn his way back into good graces now; he’d make a decent Dark Arts (learning of, not defense against) teacher.
Snape turns towards the fireplace as the flames go green, and Voldemort steps out. Snape bows and says, “Welcome back to Hogwarts, my Lord.”
Voldemort smiles at him and says, “Severus – can’t you do anything about the Apparation restriction?”
“Not so far, my Lord. It seems to have been enchanted into the castle itself. But, that’s all to the good, it means that even the resistance (such as is left of it) can’t Apparate in and out of here either.”
“No matter, I should not need to be visiting here often anyway, not with the school in your capable hands. I trust you know the main reason I am here?”
“To collect your consort, my Lord. I will have her sent for right away. In the meantime, may we discuss some replacement teachers?”
“Certainly, Severus. I had the Carrows in mind, but if you have others please put them forward.”
“Thank you, my Lord. I would rather that the school remain a place to learn, while some of the focus is shifted towards the things you want them to learn. I think we can accomplish much through education, but we need capable teachers, not just faithful Death Eaters. In my most humble opinion at least, my Lord.”
“Ah, Severus, ever the diplomat. You have earned the right to speak your mind with me; I know what your level of devotion is and that if I command something you will comply whether you want to do it or not. So, I am guessing you would rather not have the Carrows, and on reflection, you’re probably right. Who else would you suggest?”
“Karkaroff, my Lord. Yes, I know he deserted you in his cowardice. He was a fool not to have faith, but I am also aware how easily I can say that, when I never had to face the horrors of Azkaban myself. I’d like to think I’d have remained faithful, but never having been put to that test, I can’t know for certain. I know he’ll need to pay his penances to you, and he’ll know it as well. But I think we can make a faithful servant of him again, and he is a good teacher. I hoped to put him in charge of a new Dark Arts class.”
“I’ll consider it, Severus. Who else?”
“Lupin, if we can turn him away from the resistance. The pure-bloods will howl, but I suspect that will be a benefit of sorts, in time. I personally do not like him much myself, but even I have to admit that he is a very good teacher. He’s about the only replacement I could think of for Transfiguration, as McGonagall will be leaving, at my suggestion. Lupin isn’t a natural leader like she is, I think that the likelihood of him trying to foment resistance when he has no other support staff-wise would be low. And – I might be able to give him some incentive not to try, as well.”
Voldemort looks searchingly at him and finally smiles, seeing in Snape’s mind what that ‘incentive’ might be, and says, “I trust your judgment, Severus. Is there anything else?”
Snape says, “There is one thing, and it’s just an offer to you if you wish to take it. Our caretaker, Mr. Filch…he’s always fantasized about buggering Potter. If you wished to have additional means of torturing him, I think that would be one.”
Voldemort smiles lazily and says, “Well, this Mr. Filch might not find Potter’s ass to be quite so tight as he’d expected. Mr. Potter and Miss Granger both have already had the pleasure of my cock several times. In fact, Miss Granger is going to be bearing me some children as well, and I believe my consort can keep her company in her cell once we return. I do need to find a more loyal one to bestow my favors upon, I think. Keep an eye out, Severus.”
“I shall, my Lord. In fact I have a suggestion about that, but it’s a discussion we can have later, when we’re relaxed and have the leisure. When you are done with Miss Brown, I suspect Filch would enjoy having her for a wife; he enjoyed delivering her punishments here quite a bit.”
Voldemort chuckles and asks who this man is, and Snape smiles and replies, “Read it in Lavender’s mind, my Lord. It ought to provide you with some amusement. Speaking of, I believe she is waiting outside now, would you like her brought in?”
“Yes, I’m ready to take her and go. You have done well, Severus. I shall consider whether this Mr. Filch merits the realization of his fantasy with Potter, once I’ve been through Lavender’s mind a bit. I doubt I will ever give her over to another though, much as I’d enjoy doing so. You see, she is ensouled with my own soul; I took hers entirely and replaced it with a portion of mine. So, that makes her valuable in more than one way. At some point if she still does not learn her place, I may just erase her mind; but I doubt I’d ever let her go or let her reproduce with anyone other than me.”
Snape inclines his head and says, “As you say, my Lord.” And now, he understands exactly what he saw on the night of the ceremony. Snape is impressed in spite of himself, that was an extremely complex bit of magic and he made it look effortless, even for the one person (him) who had noticed anything was happening at all.
Lavender looks terrified as she comes in, and she bows all the way to the floor, groveling at Voldemort’s feet. He pushes her with his toe and says, “Get up, we are going. We can discuss your penance later.” He pulls her into the fireplace and they disappear.
[Author's Note: Again, thank you so much for the reviews and positive ratings! From this point forward there is slightly more story advancement; setting up the new environment and new world order. Necessary to make room for further debauchery later. ;) ]
