Chapter 15
Rita fucking Skeeter. Sirius hated the damn bitch! At the moment, it was worse than most times. Throwing the copy of the Prophet down on the table, he put his head in his hands, elbows propped on the table. While they all expected his relationship with PJ to come out, what they didn't expect was for the Prophet to announce it on the front fucking page with a huge picture of them looking like they were about to kiss! That wasn't what they were doing, of course, as it was from when he was talking to PJ, but that's sure what it looked like and the speculation Skeeter gave seemed to insinuate that as well. Not only was it out there that they were a couple, there was a complete rundown of PJ being an author, his books, all of that. He was sure, with how it was worded, the bloody bitch had gotten that from PJ's publisher.
Groaning loudly, Sirius lifted his head and looked at the paper again. Though the attack on Hogsmeade was covered, that seemed to have taken a backseat to the 'romance' between him and PJ. Oh, his godson was not going to like this, at all. “Fucking bitch,” he muttered, glaring at the paper as though it had personally wronged him.“You need to show it to PJ, Sirius, so he knows it's there,” Remus told him gently, knowing his old friend was irate. And he completely understood why. Normally, such bits would go in one of Skeeter's gossip columns where some would read it, but most would ignore it. This time, though, that hadn't happened. He was certain that had to do with who PJ was and his current release. Of course, it helped nothing and didn't do anything but put PJ in more danger, something that would set Sirius off all the more. That wasn't good and he needed to keep Sirius focused on the bigger picture rather than his anger.“I do,” Sirius groaned, not liking that or what PJ's reaction could be to it. He knew PJ was asleep right now. His godson had spent most of the night on the phone with Du Bois giving an interview about what happened. Of course, he had written up his account of the incident and sent it on, but he said, because he was so involved and was seen there, he didn't want to do the article himself, so he passed it on to his friend. That was fine and would only help, of course. From what he was told, Du Bois would actually be in the country for a few days covering some of this mess. With this out there, PJ was going to have to be damned careful about that. Sighing, he shook his head. “Let me go wake him. He won't be happy about me doing that or what's in the article, but it has to come. Some of his plans will have to shift slightly because I'm sure he's going to end up more high profile because of this shite. That means he has to protect himself better.”“He does,” Remus agreed with a nod. Pressing on, Remus said, “I talked with Tonks this morning. The fact that we could get help so quickly to Hogsmeade yesterday because of those phones, has the Ministry reconsidering their stance on them. She told me Madam Bones went to Arthur this morning about the situation. From what she said, he's drafting up a law right now that will allow most to own and use them legally. What she's hearing is that the attack yesterday has everyone going into full war mode. I know that can only help all of us, Sirius. It means the denial about the whole nightmare is over and the Ministry will finally step up.”“That's what we need,” Sirius agreed with a nod. Sighing, he picked up the paper and looked over the article again then snarled once more. Throwing it down, fingering his wand and wanting to set it on fire to help his temper, he snorted, “The stupid bitch gave his fucking Animagus form and mine! Bloody hell, that helps nothing!”Picking up the paper, Remus skimmed it quickly then sighed. “Yours is well known enough that it's not a huge deal, Sirius. His—I didn't know he had one. That's not something we discussed.” Reading the official ministry registration on it, he said, “What kind of dog is he, do you know? All it says is black dog.”“I have no fucking clue,” Sirius sighed. “I didn't know he did either.” Groaning, he said, “I'll find out then fill you in so we at least know. It's probably best that most don't and will just have the basic description that's there. Let's hope it's something that doesn't stand out like mine.” Standing, he grabbed the paper and had the elf get him a beaker of coffee for his godson then said, “Let me go talk to him. And hope like hell he doesn't blow his fucking stack over this.” Seeing Remus nod, he left, hoping PJ would stay calm. He wasn't going to count on that, of course, as this was enough to set anyone off.
“Stupid cow!” PJ shouted, throwing the paper on the bed then began pacing, scrubbing his hands through his hair. “Why can't the Prophet be a normal fucking paper and report real news on the front page? Especially news that big? Is that too much to ask?” Groaning, he stopped and looked at his godfather, shaking his head. With a weary sigh, he said, “I expected it to come out soon, probably after this bit as so many saw us together, but not this way! And what right does she have to give away my Animagus form to everyone and their bloody uncle?”
“I know,” Sirius groaned. Leaning back in the chair he was seated in, he crossed his ankles and then folded his arms over his chest. Looking at PJ, he shrugged then sighed, “We'll just deal accordingly, all we can do. It just means you have to watch your arse more than you are now, nothing more. Using the glamours you came up with and changing your hair color when you go out is something that has to start. It'll help. That's all I can suggest. We'll manage.”“We will,” PJ told him with a resigned sigh. Conjuring a chair, he flopped in it then sipped at the coffee his godfather brought him. “This is not the way to start the day, Sirius.”Shrugging, Sirius said, “Something I get, but it's better for you to know than end up blindsided by it.” Stopping, he asked, “What is your Animagus form? All it says is black dog. That can mean anything. A vague description like that helps, honestly.”“Irish Wolfhound,” PJ sighed then shifted so his godfather could see. Though his form wasn't nearly as impressive as Padfoot when it came to bulk, it was big and fast, something that pleased him. Shifting back, he said, “Not many have seen it, so I'm good there. It wasn't unexpected that I ended up with a dog because of my Patronus. I'm just thankful it's not one of the Japanese breeds. Some of those are actually prohibited in the UK because of what they are. This blends in a bit better despite the size. Plus they are plenty popular, so it won't stand out.”“That's the good part,” Sirius nodded. Even he had seen plenty of that breed around, so it wouldn't raise suspicions.Groaning, PJ downed the last of his coffee and had an elf refill it. Sipping it, he sighed then said, “The only upside to this is I'm damned sure I now have the book signing at Flourish and Blotts. Despite not liking the article, the publicity from it and me being attached to you will most likely push them to wanting it.” Shrugging, he added, “Any publicity is good when it comes to this. Let me see what the mail brings today.”“Hey, if it gets you that, it's not a bad thing,” Sirius grinned, hoping that some good did come out of this. That might balance it out slightly. However, if he did get it, they were all going to have to end up being there to guard him. Because the attachment was out there, he was damned sure the other side of this nightmare would take advantage of it. If they were around, it might temper someone thinking they could pull something stupid. He would bring that up later if it was a sure thing.“Let's see what it brings,” PJ sighed, planning to get with his publisher today if something didn't come in the post. Groaning, his head dropped back and he scrubbed his hands over his face. Shaking his head when he finished, he tried to focus. “I'll deal. I hate it, no doubt there, but I'll deal. Let's see what it drops on us.” When he finished, he looked at Sirius and said, “There's something I need to arrange with you and Remus anyway.” Seeing his godfather motion him to go on, he said, “I know you lot are busy right now and there is probably a meeting planned tonight, but I need both of you to come with me as I do something. It's one where I need you two to keep an eye out for anything off.”Focusing on that, wondering what was up, Sirius asked, “What are we doing and how dangerous is it?”“It's not dangerous, but we need a couple more sets of eyes with all that's going on.” Before Sirius could ask, he explained, “I'm meeting Du Bois this afternoon. We've picked out a Muggle pub that's usually really busy, but we have some bits to talk over that are important about stories. With this shite piled on so much else, we want someone to watch out for us for anything off.” Smiling, he added, “Besides, I thought you would like to meet him. We'll have a bit of fun and some laughs.”“We'll do that,” Sirius grinned, looking forward to that. Sobering up, he asked, “Any particular reason for this meeting?”“He's going to cover a couple things I don't want to touch,” PJ told him honestly. “Because of my involvement with you lot, I don't think it's wise. Besides, it'll make it clear he's around, thus throwing off those looking for him. It was my thought to see what he could do about the Prophet and their lack of news coverage on so much. I took them apart a few years ago, but not much has changed. The article today proves that. With what's going on, it makes me wonder why in the hell they aren't doing more to cover some of this. It's best I not do another as I did the last one. He has more resources to look into bits as he's in the States. That I don't want to take on as it would involve me hopping back and forth. So, I'll focus more on some other areas, such as the people involved. The more of us covering this, the better we're going to be as there is a ton here and I can't do it all on my own. He just doesn't want to base out of the UK because of what's going on.” Sighing, he added, “And when we're done there, I need to go to the Alley. I'm running out of the some of the essentials for Poe. Though I can get bits at Muggle pet stores, some of it I can only get in Magical ones. The Alley isn't something I want to chance on my own, for obvious reasons.”“No, you don't,” Sirius told him firmly. “Anytime you go to the Alley from here on out, glamour or not, one of us comes with you. Probably more than one. We'll make it as easy on you as we can manage, but that is not one I want you going it alone for. Promise me that, PJ.”“You have my word,” PJ assured him with a nod. “I'm trying to stay away from there for that reason.”“We'll get with Albus today and let him know whatever he plans we won't be around for. If we can manage to get back, it'll be later. I'm not worried about them being in the house alone. No one can get up here without us letting them in the room. We've all made sure of that. We'll just have the elves keep watch to make sure.”“That's fine,” PJ told him. “I'll make sure they do that.” Groaning, he leaned his head back and covered his face with his hands. “I might as well get my shower and start the day since I'm up. There's no chance of getting anymore sleep.”“While you do that, I'll go down and get with Remus to let him know what we planned then get word to the rest. I'm sure there is plenty of chaos over yesterday and something's coming from it.” Sirius told him, standing with a groan. Seeing PJ do the same thing, he looked at his godson then put a hand on the back of his head and pulled him into a soft kiss. It wasn't planned and he wasn't going to push this further, but he had the impulse, so he went with it. When he broke it off, he saw PJ looking at him, not appearing at all upset by it. Smiling, he rubbed the back of his head and said, “You get on your end and I'll get on mine.” Seeing PJ nod, he then left, planning to tend to all kinds of bits so they could prepare.Watching Sirius go, PJ grinned slightly, adoring the kiss. While it was a complicated situation, he liked it and hoped it would push further soon. He was having a hard time pushing the memory of that one night aside. And he wanted more, despite how odd it was for him. Shaking his head, trying to focus, he scratched his stomach then headed off to the bathroom. He needed a shower then breakfast. Once he was done with that, he would call Toonie. As he was damned sure she saw the paper, he wanted to talk to her before she panicked that he was involved.
Walking down Diagon Alley with PJ, Sirius was grinning. They had a great time with Du Bois. Though part of what went on was serious, such as discussing what to do about stories, for the most part it was a laugh riot listening to the two.
From what he could tell, PJ and Du Bois were great friends, that stretching back all the way to when PJ was in school. They talked about all manner of things that had all of them rolling. He wasn't sure what to expect of Du Bois when it came to how he looked, but what he saw hadn't factored in at all. The man was massive, that was the only way to describe him. About 6'3”, full beard, dark sandy colored hair with the build like one of those burly men in the Ministry that worked with the big animals. He also had this strange kind of accent, something PJ called Cajun. Though you would think he was the kind that would stand out, he didn't seem to. Sirius wasn't sure why that was, but they noticed plenty seemed to just overlook him. That was good, though, as it meant most wouldn't pay attention to him. He was damned sure that helped with what he did, too.The other thing they picked up at the meeting was that Sirius now understood what footie was and why Muggles were so into it. Hell, he and Remus spent plenty of time during the meeting watching the telly and being drawn into the match. That was something he would keep in mind as something for all them to do one night as he had enjoyed it immensely.Looking at his godson, he grinned at Poe, who was perched on PJ's shoulder, yammering away. The raven had landed deftly on PJ's shoulder as they were about to walk into the Leaky Cauldron. That was odd, of course, but they went with it, though it might draw attention. “He must have known what you were doing or something for him to meet us,” he commented to PJ, reaching out to stroke the bird's head.Snorting and rolling his eyes, PJ told him. “This is normal. He seems to always have a sixth sense when I'm going to the store to get him supplies and meets me. He doesn't cause problems, of course, but seems to like to be along for that. It's just something you'll get used to.”“He's fine,” Sirius said then putt his hand on PJ's shoulder to stop him. Grinning from ear to ear, he pointed to the display of PJ's books, all of them, in the window of Flourish and Blotts. Along with the books was a big sign announcing the book signing. PJ had gotten the notice from his publisher that morning that it was a lock. Chuckling, he said, “That's good for you! Most of what came out in the paper is shite and will cause problems, but this is positive.”Grinning sheepishly as the pictures of himself on the dust jackets looked at him and winked, PJ chuckled, “It is. I should sell quite a few doing this as most here haven't heard of me because of what I write. That's not a bad thing.”Clapping PJ on the shoulder, Remus said, “It's not and can only help you expand your audience. You're quite good and they'll see that. That can only help you in the future.”“I can,” PJ agreed with a nod, still grinning. “Building your audience is always a good thing if you plan to keep on writing.”Moving them along before anyone noticed who they were, Sirius guided them to the Magical Menagerie and held the door open. Remus went in first, of course, to make sure there were no signs of danger. Though they didn't expect any, it was best to get in the habit now. PJ followed Remus in, then he trailed along, making sure to keep a wary eye out over his shoulder for anyone following them or looking like they were watching.PJ immediately went to the area dedicated to birds and began picking out what was needed. He was passing stuff off to Remus when something stopped it. Poe began dancing from foot to foot, cawing happily and something was answering him in the same type of voice. Head turning in the direction the bird seemed like he was focused in, he then stood there, dumbfounded as another raven was on a perch. Immediately, the two began talking back and forth before they began doing the same kind of dance Poe always did when he brought the mail, in perfect sync with it. It was the same movements, same talking, all of it, almost like they were twins. Watching, he didn't know what to say.Coming over to help the men, the clerk, Hornchurch, stood there, horror struck. “No!” He said in a whisper. “There are two of them! There can't be!”Laughing, Sirius said, “This is great! It's like they've known each other all their lives.”“No,” PJ said, shaking his head as Poe hopped off his shoulder, flapped over and landed on the perch by the other raven. Immediately the two began to dance around, rapping and tapping loudly, staying in perfect sync with their movements. “Oh, no. I cannot handle the fact that there are two of them.”“Oh Merlin,” the clerk moaned, putting his head in his hand, shaking it, as the two got louder and louder. “One is bad enough.”“How much for the raven?” Sirius asked, a huge grin on his face. He found this the height of hilarity and thought it would be great to have both of them.“No, Sirius!” PJ squeaked, looking at him, eyes wide. “One is bad enough. They will make all of us mental!” The mere thought of two barmy birds driving him nuts was making him cringe.Giving a very low price, the clerk said, “If you buy the set up for him, I'll give him to you for free.” All he wanted was that barmy, noisy, completely mental bird out of his shop. No one wanted the damned creature because he was so noisy and, obviously, barmy. This was a damned good way to be shut of the creature.“We'll take him,” Sirius grinned, watching the two, who were obviously getting along. “What's his name, anyway.”“Edgar,” the clerk said, happy that the menace was going. Looking at the other bird, he leaned towards the horror-struck looking younger man that owned the other menace and whispered, “I feel sorry for you.”“Edgar and Poe,” PJ muttered, staring at the two birds. “Oh, Merlin's baggy boxers this is not going to end well.”Holding out his arm, still grinning, Sirius said, “Come on, Edgar, you're going home with us.” Immediately, the bird flew over then perched on his arm, rapping and tapping the same way Poe did. Coaxing him onto his shoulder the way Poe sat on PJ's, he grinned as he petted the bird's head. “Right. This is going to end up a real riot!”Patting poor PJ on the shoulder that didn't have Poe perched on it after he flapped over and landed on it, Remus chuckled, “I imagine we're all now in for a wonderfully strange time.”Watching Sirius wander off with Edgar to get everything they needed for the new bird, all PJ could stammer out as Poe rapped, tapped and danced on his shoulder excitedly, “There are two of them. Merlin help all of us, there are two. One is bad enough, I don't think I can handle two barmy birds! And they named him Edgar. Oh, bloody hell!”Snorting at that, grinning as the enthused Sirius talked to the bird as though he was trying to get the creature's opinion on what he planned to buy, Remus just shook his head. “Well, they'll keep each other company. Look at it that way. Maybe that will keep them from getting up to no good or annoying everyone.”“No, it just means that both of them are going to drive us all completely mad!” PJ sighed, shaking his head at Sirius' enthusiasm over the bird. “You don't have to sleep in the room with them, Remus. Poe is bad enough to deal with when it comes to that.”“There is that,” Remus admitted, grinning at the thought. “Just hope that they didn't sex Edgar wrong and he's really male. If they didn't, you may have a whole flock of them.”Cringing at the thought, PJ immediately hurried over to where the two were, planning to pay for the spell to sex Edgar so they could be sure the bird was male. He didn't even want to ponder the two mating and the possibility of a whole nest full of barmy birds. Oh no, that was most certainly not happening!Trailing along, still chuckling, Remus shook his head. Though he did tend to agree with PJ that the birds were probably going to drive them all mad, it would be most interesting to watch. At least he didn't have to put up with them in his room! If that were the case, he would be talking Sirius out of this venture.
