Chapter 15
Waiting until Bill, Sirius and the quite groggy Harry came in and took a seat then dished up their food, Remus said, gently, “We have some bits to cover with you three.”
Expecting that after the fallout from yesterday, Sirius nodded and motioned for his old friend to go on.Eyes sliding to Harry, he asked, softly, “You're fine, aren't you, Harry?” He looked tired, of course, but that was expected after what happened the day before.“Just tired, nothing more,” Harry sighed with a shake of his head, poking at his food.“Anyone would be after a spectacular showing of magic like that,” Charlie laughed, shaking his head. He was still grinning at what Harry had said and done to that lot, unable to help himself. It wasn't often that someone got the better of their mum. And Harry had managed in spectacular fashion.Though not much in a laughing mood, Harry grinned a tiny bit while he ate, not wanting to think about what he did. Yes, he was plenty mad, over more than just what went on yesterday and what was said, but what he had done made him feel plenty guilty as well, though Sirius and Bill told him not to.Looking at Harry, Lucius told him, determined bent to his voice, “We are supposed to impart to you not to blame yourself, Harry. Period. Everyone that came in this house and started something brought it on themselves. Even the Ministry, and you're well aware how foolish they can be about plenty, are saying the same thing. Those four came in here knowing full well how bad this could end up if they took the step they did, having had the possible consequences laid out for them by everyone. Then, once in this house, they were told again, by many of us. They didn't listen and pressed on. When you do that, what comes is on your own head. This is what came.”Glancing at Lucius, Harry nodded then lowered his head and went back to eating. He didn't feel better about it, though. It was still—well, there was guilt, despite what he felt about the lot.“That's bringing us to the nub of what we need to discuss. We got a missive from Albus about the fallout from this. I'll impart that to everyone. Though I know plenty sitting here at the table aren't happy with the four, or five, in some cases, that were involved, I'm sure that you want to know what's going on with them. Then we need to cover some other areas.” Seeing nods, he pressed on.“We'll start with the easiest first; Molly. She's fine, though injured. As she landed on her back, that's the worst of what she's dealing with, though there are some bumps and bruises over it. It's nothing anyone is overly concerned with and a couple mild pain killing draughts for the next two or three days will be all it takes to get her back to where she was.”Taking over for Remus, Lucius told everyone, “We'll start with the other three in the order of the least severe and troublesome issues. First is Ron. They did get him back to his normal self. Minerva couldn't manage, but St. Mungos did. In a quick fashion, from what we were told. However, it was with him the first inkling about another area came up.” Seeing odd looks, he held up a hand to hold them off then pressed on, “While they got it reversed, the spell is still there. It's latent in some way, but it's reading as being there. That may make no sense to you at the moment, but as we push on, you'll understand more.”Jumping in, Remus said, glancing around, “Hermione was next.” Sighing, he shook his head then explained, “It took them until late last night, but they managed to make it to where she could speak again. Albus' assessment of a permanent Silencio was correct. It was, in some form.”“If it was permanent, how can she speak again?” Severus asked, clasping his hands on the table, brow drawn down.“From what Albus said, no one is sure,” Remus told him with a shake of his head. “She shouldn't be able to, even he is saying that. However, he thinks he has pieces of it. That comes from the fact that, like Ron, the spell is still there and still active. They aren't sure what else it can do, honestly. And, from what we were told in the letter, they aren't sure exactly what kind of spell it is.”Jumping to the next topic before anyone could ask more questions, as some of it would be explained when they finished this part, Lucius continued, “Ginny was the worst. Again, Albus was right in that her hands were still there, just hidden in some way and made nonfunctional. It took until this morning, and some heavy sedation, but they've returned. While they are imparting it's a vanishing spell of some kind, they don't know which one.” Stopping, he glanced around then added, quietly, “As with the other two, the spell used is still there.”“All the spells are still there? They didn't reverse them?” Bill asked, brow furrowed, not sure what to make of that. If they reversed the effects, the spells should have gone.“They are still there,” Remus confirmed with a nod. “From what Albus wrote, all they were able to manage was to reverse the most obvious effects of what was done, not remove the spells. In fact, they aren't sure if they can remove the spells themselves. They are trying, as they took samples and readings, but it's no guarantee they can do it. The best they can hope for is what they did.”“Wait, wait, wait, wait,” Charlie said, holding up a hand. “If the spells are still there, do they know if that's all they can do or is there more? And if they are, how else can whatever be triggered?”“Good questions,” Lucius nodded. Snorting, he smirked then added, “And there are no answers to them. St. Mungos doesn't know, on any of it. They are trying to find out, as it might end up a pressing matter, but they don't have any idea.”Looking at Bill, Harry and Sirius, Remus told them, “That's where you're involved. Albus wants, as St. Mungos asked him to look into it, for us to sit down with the three of you and go over just what happened. What they're curious about is if Harry knows if he accidentally used a nonverbal spell, if it was driven by emotion, whatever. He's asking we go over it step by step. That and get with you other two about what you felt from the bond mark, saw, everything, so they can add it to the pile. We do realize emotions were high and it's doubtful anyone was thinking clearly when this was going on, but we need all the information we can get on it so they can sort it.”Glancing around the table, Lucius added, “He's also asking that all of us do something similar. We need to write down everything we saw, felt, was said, whatever, and pass it to him. In detail, please. He promises, as he sent the spell with the request, that it won't leak out. Once you do, you're to apply the spell that helps keep medical records sealed. So, we have no fear of judgment over what you say. Any small detail might hold the key to this. The same with it may give us some hints about what we're all dealing with. While Harry was the most obvious show of what these bonds can bring on, we do know, from talking to everyone, that we were all involved to a various degree. The bondmarks reacted to what went on. None of us have any idea what the other bondmarks might do. They may act similar to Bill, Harry and Sirius' or they may not. We need that, desperately.”“We'll do that,” Severus assured him with a nod, wondering if this could help when they weren't getting much of anywhere with some of the bits.“Next on the list is just something for us,” Remus said, glancing around. “First off, Severus and the twins are going to the shop tomorrow. It won't affect most of us, but we want everyone aware that's coming. Fred and George can't put this off any longer and they have to make an appearance. So, if anything horrific happens, we've been sent a Portkey to get them back here.” Seeing nods, he pressed on, “The next is amongst ourselves. Narcissa sent Lucius and me a note this morning about this and it's something we need to attend to. What we're going to do is set up some kind of provisions for if something like yesterday happens again. Call it an emergency plan. All of us involved ended up so involved that we didn't take some simple measures that could have ended this before the worst happened. As high as emotions were and with what was going on, that's understandable. No one is to blame, honestly. We want to hold that off. So, we're going to come up with a plan to tend to this, something we'll all follow, like emergency measures for Hogwarts if something happens. We'll all know what our assigned roles are.”“Narcissa is going to take on the most basic then send it to us. We'll tweak it from there then assign everyone something specific to take on. All of us will keep a copy of the full procedure, obviously, and suggest what you think. This way each of us can focus on only one specific part that can help it from degenerating into the mess yesterday was.” Lucius added with a soft sigh. “Looking back, Remus and I, both, can see where we could have done several bits to help that we didn't think of because of all that was going on. That we need to put in place before it happens again.” Glancing at Harry, he added, softly, “And why some of what should have helped, didn't. We think that factors in.”“What do you mean by that?” Draco asked, looking at his father. He wasn't sure what that was referring to as there wasn't much that went on that did work.“That wall Molly conjured should have been easily removed. It was a standard spell,” Remus explained softly. “The same with the elves not being able to get anyone out. They should have been able to do what they were told. Lucius got with them once everything calmed down and they told him that they couldn't pop out like they normally do. That factors in to something here. We need to know what to be able to help if something like this transpires again.”Brow furrowed as he listened, Bill didn't know what to make of that tidbit, though the wall bit made sense. “We'll give you what we can, of course.”“All we ask,” Remus told him with a smile. With that, he pressed on to more of the normal mundane when it came to the mess, areas that needed worked on, but weren't high stress.
Having gone over with Harry, Sirius and Bill everything they could remember from the day before, taking notes on it and having a Dict-O-Quill transcribe it, Remus sighed. There was plenty there and he was sure that most of it factored into the nightmare that had taken place. At the moment, they were all in his and Lucius' suite of rooms as the elves were finishing up the warding on the top floor, something they didn't get to complete the day before because of what happened.
Looking at the three, eyes then drifting to Harry, who was still worn out and looked like he could go to sleep, he said, “I think whatever happened was just an accumulation of everything then it drove the bond to lash out. We all saw what was swirling around you. It was the same colors as the bondmark you share. That has to factor in. Without knowing so much about what we're dealing with, I'm certain that the anger all of you were wrestling with, some of it coming from events long past, probably drove a large part of this, making it all the worse.”“I think that's a given,” Bill added with a snort and shake of his head. “Harry was angry, no doubt. And he had every right to be. I was. Sirius was. That had to gel in some way and push whatever else was going on. He warned us, as we told you, that it was starting again, the same kind of bit as what came with Fleur. It just didn't let up, even after a show of what could come with them ending up flattened.”“Which is something we need to put a stop to if it comes again,” Lucius added in there. “That we plan to ensure with some of these measures.”Seeing nods, Remus picked up the letter from Albus then told Sirius, as he read through part of it again, “Albus needs you to check the wards, Sirius. He's not sure if Molly not being able to get back in is from something that changed in the wards due to the magic or if it's a spell. That he wants to determine as it can factor into this mess and help them figure out the other parts.”“As far as I'm concerned, that's something that needs to stay in place,” Sirius snorted, folding his arms over his chest. “She needs to stay away until we can get a handle on this.” Before either Remus or Lucius could say anything, he added, “I'll check, though. My thought is it's not the wards. I should have felt something or a signal would have gone up if they shifted in some way. It's probably a spell. Let me rule out the warding though, before someone tackles the other.”“We do tend to agree that Molly needs to stay away, by any means we can devise, until we get all of this figured out,” Lucius snorted, smirking. “If it means putting a ward up to keep certain people out, that may be a step we want to tend to. She and the younger set that caused this problem should be forced to stay away. It's not something we thought of before the mess yesterday, but is one to take into consideration now.”“I can do that, actually,” Sirius nodded. “And will, once I figure out if it is the wards causing it. I'll key them to where they can't get through. At least until they grow some fucking sense. None of us need a repeat of yesterday.”“We'll get another nightmare the minute they are let back in,” Bill added with a shake of his head. “Mum is not going to cool down, especially after what was revealed.”“Your brothers all said the same thing,” Remus sighed, groaning. “Molly needs to put a stop to this, now. Either that or your father does.”“He's not going to, Remus,” Bill shot back, looking angry. “What Harry said to him is just going to bring on the full showing of him acting wounded. That's where he's going to try to focus and explain to everyone he's doing the best he can. Which means he'll do nothing. Just don't bother looking in his direction for help or count on him doing anything.”“A sentiment also echoed by your brothers as well.” Lucius admitted with a sad shake of his head. “We'll manage. Not to worry. Remus and I will quill another letter to Albus about the situation and impress upon him that they cannot be here. Period. I'm sure the events of yesterday will drive that home in a way nothing we've said so far has managed. That and we'll do all we can to stop the nonsense before it starts once more.”Pressing on, not wanting to worry that topic to death as it wouldn't assist anything, Remus said, “We're going to have the elves ward all these floors the same way yours are. We know, for now, the bond with you three is the biggest issue. Lucius and I think, maybe, it's because it's so much more developed than the rest. However, all of us were affected this time. Which tells Lucius and I we need to make safe havens for all of us. As this is your house, we want your approval, Sirius. These will act just like yours does and no one can come in without the approval of those there.”“Do it. I don't care,” Sirius told him. “It can only help. The fact that we're all locked in this damned house together tells me that we all need somewhere to hide from time to time. It's something that is bound to cause issues at some point, especially with a few of the personalities involved. And I'm including ours there.”“Good way to look at it,” Lucius told him with a nod. “We'll tend to it as the floors are finished. It doesn't look like any of us can move into our own place at any time in the foreseeable future, so we need our own space.”Continuing on from there, Remus filled them in on a more detailed version of what was going on with the three that were the most affected. It wasn't much, but he wanted them aware so that they might be able to put together bits that were clues that could help. He doubted that would happen, but he hoped.
Flopping down on the bed, where Harry and Bill already were, Sirius groaned. Shaking his head, he said, “It's not the wards. I checked everything I could and had Remus check some other bits. The wards did not throw her out or keep her there. Now she can't get in, that I made damned sure of, the same with the others, but they didn't cause it. That means it's a spell, magic, something. Remus is sending that along to Albus for him to work with and test. We'll see what he says about it.”
“Her staying out is what we need,” Bill agreed with a nod, running his fingers through Harry's hair. Harry was curled up on the bed by him, head resting in his lap as he was still tired. From the look of it, he would probably go back to sleep soon. That was fine.“I plan to ensure it. Unless she's become a wardmaster and we didn't know it, she's not getting in. The others won't either. We also added Fleur, though we doubt she's going to pull another stunt like that. Better safe than sorry there.” Sirius explained, scooting up then lying down by Harry, arm draped over him.“True,” Bill nodded. Sighing, he shook his head then added, “Mum is going to go completely mental over this, Sirius. I mean over the top. The fact that this ended so badly, so much was revealed, all of it, is going to send her there. Add in that she can't get in and do anything is going to make it worse. I get you made it to where she can't, but something is coming from it. I just don't know how.”“We'll deal as it comes,” Sirius shrugged. “Let it. I'm done playing there. What she pulled yesterday was enough to tell me that it will. And she's going to set it off again. I doubt we'll get anything under enough control for her not to. That's going to take time, plenty of it, as we have no idea how to start managing that. If she wants to play poke the dragon, it's her issue, not ours.” Looking down at the sleepy Harry, who was gazing over his shoulder at him, Sirius gave him a squeeze then said, “Nothing to worry about, Harry. I have an inkling that, though you're the one it set off most and you verbalized plenty, the magic that drove it came from all of us. That swirling whatever around all of us might indicate that. I mentioned it to Remus after I thought about it and he agrees. You probably took plenty through that bondmark and it fueled what came. What you did was something all three of us were feeling, you just tend to say it and stand up when others won't. Nothing more than that.”“I didn't think of that,” Bill admitted, looking at Sirius with wide eyes. “It makes sense, though. We were all furious.”“None of us did, including Remus and Lucius,” Sirius told him. “I'm sure if it went on, as angry as your brothers were, it might have done the same. Look at what Draco did with Charlie. They aren't getting along and have plenty of issues, but he stepped in front of Charlie and said something to your mum. I don't see him doing that without something driving it.”“Remus and Lucius are taking that on and going to talk to them to see what happened.” Sirius assured him.“This is a mess,” Harry sighed, shutting his eyes.“It may be, but we'll handle it and deal,” Bill assured him, stroking his head. As he did that, though, he remembered what Harry blurted out in that moment of anger, about how he didn't want this broken. That made him smile just a tad.Honestly? He didn't want it broken either. It wasn't what any of them wanted, but he liked it. Part of it was he was now with Harry and nothing could be done to get them apart. That he had wanted for a long time. Though he had never factored Sirius into this, other than him being a parental type figure for Harry, he wasn't grousing about that either. Sirius was becoming a good friend and someone he liked having around. How could he not like someone that took protecting Harry and his welfare so seriously? He couldn't. Besides, he was a riot to be around when they weren't bogged down with dealing with this mess. That added plenty of bits to this that made it far more manageable. He hadn't had some of the fun they had concocted since living at home and sharing a room with Charlie. That he adored. Sirius was great to be around, for so many reasons. It seemed to add something to the mix that wasn't there before. Not to mention how Harry adored his godfather. It made him feel good to know that the one person, other than he and his brothers, that truly cared for Harry would now be in his life forever and no one could manipulate him out. That was about as good as it was going to get.Looking down at Harry again, seeing his eyes shut and hearing his breath deepen as he slid to sleep, Bill told Sirius, keeping his voice down so he didn't bother Harry, “We have a ton to work on. The Healer appointment is coming again. I have to get with the goblins if we can't get a longer tether and plenty of other bits. None of them are easy.”“We have to work on all of that and more,” Sirius admitted with a groan. “While the bond is important, some of the rest of this is as well. We'll manage. Not to worry. We just have to do a delicate dance. I think the goblins will be the easiest of this, though. They'll get what's happening if you show them the documentation we have. That probably needs to come.”“It does,” Bill nodded. “I have vacation time I can take, but this might work better. We need to set it up, though.” While Harry slept, he began discussing all they had to do.
