Disclaimer: I do not own the Harry Potter franchise. JK Rowling does. I make no money doing this. I just do it to keep the plot bunnies from strangling me at night. |
Hermione woke up to the shuffling sounds of material moving. She blinked a few times, groaning when she realized she was back in the hospital wing.
“Why?”
“Easy pet,” Snape said quietly. “You must get your rest.”
“I don’t want to be back in here,” she pouted.
Snape gave her a soft smile, startling her. She’d never seen him smile before. “Needs must. I have enlarged your bed. Sleep with Draco tonight. Kiss him in the morning and return to your bed.”
“What time is it?” Draco asked groggily.
“Around four.”
“Still high,” Draco said softly, his eyes lazily perusing the room.
Snape chuckled. “And you will be for a few more hours yet. I’m going to leave these vials with you. Do not drink them until the blood’s effects have worn off.”
“What are they?” Hermione asked, sighing as she sank into Draco’s side.
“The nutritional potion I told you about,” Snape said. “We’ll need to discuss the diet you both need to keep if you are to be gallivanting all over the world hunting down valuable ingredients for our business later. I’ve also enhanced your collars with another spell. They will act as a protean charm.”
“What will you read it on?” Hermione asked curiously, reaching up to finger the collar that had been put back in its place.
“This,” Snape said, taking out an ordinary looking pocket watch. “This way, I’ll know how you’re doing. Do not try to do this on your own.”
Draco looked away, still embarrassed from the chastisement. “What about learning the spells?”
“I’m about to have a talk with a certain portrait regarding your sentence. We’ll see what I can get done that way. If not, you can train after I come for you. I’ll be able to help that way as well. For now, sleep.”
His direct order had their eyes slamming shut before they could protest. They felt the barest hint of lips on their foreheads before they slipped off to sleep.

“Ahem!”
Hermione shot straight up in bed, yelping a moment later when Draco dislodged her and sent her careening toward the floor. He caught her just before her head hit, hauling her back on the mattress with him.
“Perhaps a milder approach would keep us from killing ourselves,” Draco growled in annoyance as he held Hermione’s trembling body.
McGonagall huffed. “Perhaps you two should sleep in separate beds as is mandated by Hogwarts rules.”
“Funny,” Draco drawled. “I’ve never read anything about separating the sexes in the Hospital wing. Then again, perhaps Granger has. She has Hogwarts: A History memorized word for word.”
“No, not a thing,” Hermione said, admiring Draco for his ability to annoy McGonagall so early in the morning. She looked like she had a hairball.
McGonagall blustered a few minutes before finally throwing her hands up. “Separate now!”
Draco chuckled and turned Hermione so he could give her a heated kiss. She was caught in between embarrassed and turned on but she did know that neither one of them were willing to disobey Snape again. A loud crackling sound startled them badly enough to jump apart. McGonagall was rubbing her wrist with a deep frown.
“What was that?” McGonagall asked, her face like thunder.
“A kiss?” Draco asked innocently.
“No,” McGonagall growled. “My spell backfired.”
Draco smirked. “It’s against the rules to cast spells at students.”
McGonagall huffed. “Separate now. I won’t tell you again.”
Draco grabbed a vial off the table by the bed and handed it to Hermione before helping her get up. Then he downed his own bottle despite McGonagall’s loud protests. Hermione ignored them both, padding across the icy cold floor to get into her own bed. She popped open the vial and drank, noting that the potion tasted a lot like Snape. She couldn’t stop the small grin that spread over her face.
“If you’re both feeling better,” McGonagall said through clenched teeth, “then perhaps you will both dress and come to breakfast before resuming your detention.”
“Fine with me,” Draco mumbled. “I can’t stand this room.”
Hermione simply nodded and did what she was told. She hoped Charlie would write back today. They had so much more to do before they went hunting.

Hermione,
You’ve presented an interesting situation that I would very much like to discuss further. However, delicate matters like this should be discussed in person, don’t you think? Please send your answer as soon as possible so that I may send you and your partner a specialized clearance port key.
Yours,
Charlie
“Was it the reply you wanted?”
Hermione quickly rolled the parchment up and gave Ron her best smile. “I think so.”
“Didn’t take him long to respond,” Harry said, curiosity shining in his eyes.
“I’m glad,” Hermione said. “We’re sort of on a deadline. Anyway, I’ve got to go. McGonagall will be dragging me out of here by my hair if I don’t leave now.”
“Glad you’re feeling better,” Harry said softly.
“It was just a bug,” Hermione said dismissively.
She knew Harry was worried and she didn’t want to draw any more attention to herself than necessary. He would drop it but Ron didn’t look ready to let it go. She grabbed her bag and flounced out before he could, hoping she could slip the note to Draco before they got to McGonagall’s class.
“Secret Admirer?” Draco drawled, materializing from behind the tapestry near the loos.
“Always,” she said, quickly handing him the letter.
He scanned it and nodded. “That would be best but how do you propose we get around old Mac?”
“Perhaps you could show our Master that you’ve learned your lesson and ask for his help.”
Draco’s cheeks turned pink and he slightly crushed the letter in his hand before gritting his teeth and tapping his collar. She jumped when she felt her own collar heat up in response.
“Did that come through to mine?”
Draco leaned forward and inspected her collar, gasping. “The center grommet has runes on it. They’re almost too small to make out but I’d bet it did.”
“That’s convenient,” she said quietly and then did a double take. “He changed your center spike to a large flat disk.”
“Yours is larger too,” Draco said. “I imagine he did it for ease of use.”
“He thought of everything.”
“Not everything,” Draco said softly, looking down at his hands.
Hermione frowned and studied them before gasping. “You’re having a withdrawal.”
“You are too,” he said, giving her hands a pointed look.
She frowned and brought them up to her face, noting the trembling in them. “But I don’t feel itchy or cold. I’m not really even craving alcohol right now.”
“Do you feel thirsty?”
She smacked her lips and gasped. “Parched.”
“Do you remember what the withdrawal symptoms for the blood was?”
“Dry mouth, upset stomach, irritability, and….”
“Fine tremors leading to full out seizures if kept away too long,” Draco recited.
“But the books all said it would take a while for those to develop.”
“They also based the studies on once a month consumptions to start.”
“How bad do you think this is going to get?”
He shrugged and slung an arm around her shoulder. “It’s better when we’re closer. Beyond that, we’ll have to ask Master.”
“I’ll do it,” she said, tapping her own collar and cocking her head when Draco’s grommet filled with runes. “Strange.”

McGonagall cleared her throat uncomfortably about two hours into detention. “I have several things to attend to this morning. I expect you both to stay in this room until I return.”
“Yes, Headmistress,” Hermione and Draco said in quiet disbelief.
She gave one curt nod and stormed out of the classroom. It was obvious she didn’t want to go.
“Wonder what came up?” Hermione asked.
Draco studied the door for a few moments. “I’m beginning to suspect a certain portrait.”
“Well, whatever it is, I’m grateful.”
“Aye,” Draco said, grabbing a roll of parchments and spreading them out strategically. “You wanted to learn these spells. With her gone, this is the best chance we’ll get.”
“Aren’t they dark?”
“Not too bad. I wouldn’t want to be caught casting them, but their effects shouldn’t set off any alarms. Stand up and let’s get to it.”
Hermione stood, carefully putting her research into her bag before grabbing her wand. “What first?”
“Well, I had thought that we’d need protection before we even tried getting near the dragon. Master put protections on our collars, but I hardly think they’ll be enough to resist dragon fire. I also don’t think a few drops of venom will detour them from trying to eat us.”
“Agreed. I didn’t think there were many dark protection spells though… unless you’re thinking of blood magic or something.”
“No, nothing like that,” Draco said, leafing through his notes before handing her a parchment. “They’re dark because they call upon the core. The spell molds to the skin, sinks into it really, rather than surrounding the body in a shield.”
“But that’s dangerous!”
“And dark,” Draco said. “It requires concentration so you don’t damage your core.”
“I’m not sure we’ll be able to concentrate on the spell along with the act of dragon taming.”
“Fire protection potion won’t hold up to dragon fire.” He smirked. “Chicken?”
She sneered. “Never.”
“Then read the spell and let’s get started.”
She read his perfect slanted writing, noting that he’d drawn precise directions for the wand movement. She practiced them several times until she was sure she’d perfected the exact flick and twist movement required. Then she sat her wand down to avoid an accidental casting and began trying to mouth the words.
“It’s Welsh,” Draco said after her fifth botched time. “Tarian tân. Pronounced tar-ee-ahn tawwwn ”
She tripped over it one more time before pronouncing it correctly. Draco gave her a nod when she had it correct and motioned for her to pick up her wand.
“Cast correctly, it should make the skin impervious to any kind of fire, including fiendfyre.”
“That’s dark magic!”
“And a dragon’s fire is magic as well,” he reminded her.
She nodded and bit her lip, thinking of the damage one blast of fire had done to Harry. It hadn’t even been a direct hit.
“So, we’ll start simply. I’ll cast the shield on myself and you try it on a simple flame.”
“Magical or muggle?”
“Both. I don’t want to get a nasty surprise. I rather like my face.”
She rolled her eyes and took her stance, waiting for Draco to run through the spell a few more times before casting it. It made his skin sparkle like diamonds and she gawked for a second before getting a hold of herself and casting a bluebell flame. She walked it over to him, setting it on his skin and watching for any signs of pain. They both watched in awe as the flames licked over him, leaving pristine skin behind. The familiar stirrings of adrenaline and lust surged inside her. This was as close to the edge as one could get.
She banished the flame and dug into his pocket for his zippo, holding it to his arm with the same results. She tried the spell she’d used to set Snape’s robes on fire in first year, the spell to cast flames under a cauldron without burning a table, and several spells designed to melt metal. Nothing penetrated it.
“I think we’ve found a winner,” Draco said, ending the spell. His eyes sparkled with delight and the surge of power that came from knowing he conquered a dangerous spell. “Wanna try?”
Hermione nodded and centered herself, casting the spell. It felt like someone had pinched her core and her energy waned a bit. “It’s really draining.”
Draco nodded. “It’s definitely going to be hard to get used to. We’ll have to limit our casting for the next few days outside of practice so we don’t drain our cores. How are you feeling?”
“I’ll be fine. Start casting.”
Draco took out the zippo first and lit it, holding it against her skin. She watched in fasciation as the flames wrapped around her wrist. It almost tickled, the oxygen being burned rushing over her skin but there was no pain. Her skin was in perfect shape. She suppressed a shudder at the intense feeling of power it gave her. Draco snapped the lighter closed and started casting the same spells she had, all with the same results. They had varying degrees of sensations but none painful or even more annoying than a feather. It was a heady thing.
“One more, if you think you’re strong enough,” Draco taunted.
She clenched her jaw and nodded. She would try it, though she was terrified. Crabbe had died casting the spell, nearly killing her, Draco, Harry, and Ron in the process. But Draco had been right. Dragon fire would be every bit as potent as fiendfyre.
Draco took a deep breath and started chanting, a stream of fire shooting from his wand. She gasped as the flames sought her out and enveloped her. The spell almost slipped from her shock but she held it at the last minute. He nodded and flicked his wand, a wall of flames shot from his wand, morphing into a dragon. Flames started separating, trying to move to the desks and chairs surrounding them but Draco gritted his teeth and twisted his wand, making the flame lessen in intensity. The entire time, she felt nothing more than a strong breeze. Draco started chanting a different spell and the flames died down before being snuffed out. He fell to his knees, panting from the exertion of the dark spell. Hermione fell beside him, cancelling out her spell as well.
“Think that’ll work?” Draco panted.
“Yep,” Hermione huffed, using her last bit of strength to throw herself on top of him and bring them both to the floor to rest. “If I weren’t so bloody tired, I’d fuck your brains out.”
He chuckled and put an arm around her. “Later, Granger.”
