Chapter 15
“Tom? Can I talk to you, please?” Nagini asked after poking her head into his office. He was sitting behind his desk, going over what was scattered on on the surface, so she waited. As she well knew, he didn't like being disturbed if he was really busy, but she thought this was pressing and didn't know when he might have the time.
Brow furrowed, Tom looked up from a piece of legislation he was trying to push through. This was odd, so he motioned her over. After leaning back and waiting for her to slither up then drape over his shoulders, he petted her head. “What do you need to ask me?”“It's about Harry,” she said with a soft sigh as he stroked her head in the spot she loved.“What about him?” Tom inquired, curious where this was going.“I'm trying to do what you asked, getting him to talk to me so it might help, but he won't. He's not talking much, even to Sirius. I hoped you would have some advice on how I might manage,” she hissed, gazing at him. Then, with a hissy sigh, she added, “He's quite sad, Tom, I can sense it from him. I just don't know how to get him to talk to me. One of the first things I did was assure him that I won't tell anyone, but it hasn't helped.” Then she waited to see what he had to say. Maybe he had some advice on how to get Harry to talk to her, because she didn't know what else to try. After taking in what she said, Tom thought it over then asked, “He's not talking to Sirius much either?”“No, not that I can tell,” Nagini told him, shifting around on his shoulders so she could see his face better. “He's so sad, Tom. You told me him talking can help, but he won't.”“Sadness is part of the depression,” Tom told her softly, rubbing a hand up and down her back. “Let me ask this; is he improving at all or is he still sleeping all the time?”“He is some,” she told him. “Sirius seems quite pleased that he's talking a tad more and staying awake longer. He's just so quiet. It disturbs me.”“The potions are helping then,” Tom said, pleased. While he hadn't noticed any decrease in the tiredness, it might be so minimal he wouldn't yet. If Harry was improving, it could only help him. Then, with a sigh, he thought over what she was asking of him. As he wasn't well versed in dealing with anyone, let alone helping them overcome issues, he was as lost as she was. Sirius was the one she should ask about such matters, but he couldn't understand her. He also didn't think the man would talk about such matters freely around him. After pondering it a few minutes, he said, “Why not start small and work from there. Maybe with something unrelated then ask minor questions about him and what he's feeling. If he'll answer, you can push to bigger ones then ease into the area he's having the most problems with. I'm not sure, Nagini. I don't think, with what I know of Harry, that he will jump right into the most troublesome areas with you. You may have to go about it another way.”The snake took in what he said and pondered it, tail twitching as she did. “Maybe I'll try going about it as you suggest. I just don't know how to start.”“Talk to him about normal subjects,” Tom suggested, feeling on firmer ground with this part. “Try getting to know him more. His likes, dislikes, whatever, then start pressing on from there with small questions. It might give you the opening you need.”Once more thinking over what Tom said, Nagini agreed, “Yes, I may try that tomorrow. All I can do is try.” Then, looking at Tom, she added, softly, “I don't like sensing him so sad. It's like an illness which wraps around him.”“From what I know, depression is an illness,” Tom told her, once more stroking his familiar's back.“It seems like one to me, just very different.” Nagini observed, thinking over what he said.“Illnesses of the mind are different than physical ones,” Tom explained. “They aren't like bodily ones.”“Humans are quite confusing,” Nagini grumbled with a disgruntled sigh. “It doesn't aid matters that I'm only used to you and your Death Eaters. Harry and Sirius are quite different, people I need to go about matters with differently because they will be around for a long time.”“I don't suppose that's something I thought of,” Tom admitted to her, looking at where her head was resting. “You'll manage fine. Just work on getting to know Harry. He and Sirius don't act the same way I do and it'll take you time to get used to them. Since you like talking to Harry, you can go about it that way. I think it's something you'll enjoy.”“Oh, I already do,” Nagini agreed, lifting her head and looking at him. “Another person to talk to is ever so nice. You're awfully busy all the time and he's not, so I get to talk with him more.”“Very true,” he chuckled, giving her head an affectionate rub. “I think we both have to adjust to having them around as they won't be going anywhere. The three of us will be together for the rest of our lives.”“I do like that idea,” Nagini admitted, giving him an affectionate squeeze where she was wrapped around him. “Your Death Eaters are ever so annoying, Tom. How you put up with them I'll never know!”“It's a means to an end,” Tom admitted with a soft chuckle. “They annoy me as well, truth be told. I can't accomplish what I'm trying without them, though, so we have to tolerate them.”“There are a few you should allow me to eat,” she grumbled, thinking of the worst ones that annoyed her.“After I accomplish my goals, we'll talk it over again,” he told her, amused. “As foul as they are, I’m just worried they may upset your digestive tract if you were to consume them.”“I won't be affected,” she told him. “Though Wormtail was the worst. He won't be around anymore? I think you mentioned he wouldn't,” she asked.“No, he won't be,” Tom told her honestly. “And I do admit, he managed to get on my nerves more than the rest.”“He was worthless,” she huffed. “Well beneath you, Tom.”“True,” Tom told her with a smile and nod. “He had his uses, especially during the last war. The time for him to be of use is over. Not to worry. He'll be the last use to me when he goes to the Ministry. We don't have to worry about him after they finish with him.”“Good,” Nagini grumbled. “I wanted to eat him, Tom. We wouldn't ever have to worry about him again if I did.”“No, but I would worry you would have caught something from him if you did,” Tom chuckled again. “Never fear, him going to the Ministry will be a big help for all of us. It'll get Sirius freed. That will not only help me in the long run, but make him and Harry happy.”The snake thought over what he said then said, “Well, yes, it will be good.”“It will. I know what I'm doing,” Tom soothed, smiling a tad. “Not to worry. He won't ever be back.”“Good,” Nagini told him. “I didn't like him at all.”“I don't think anyone did,” Tom told her, smiling a little more.Huffing, Nagini grumbled slightly then began asking questions about what was going on. Usually, she was with him all the time and knew, but she had been spending time at the house. So, she was curious. While Nagini didn't always understand all he did and the complex nature of what he was attempting to pull off, Tom always talked to her about his plans. Sometimes she could see issues he couldn't because of her simplistic nature. Besides, she was the only one he could talk plots and plans out with. She wasn't about to tell anyone and he trusted her. It would help him, at times, figure out a problem he was dealing with the way talking aloud did. So, he always filled her in.
After Nagini left to go check on Harry, Tom remained leaning back in his chair. Fingers drumming on the arm of his chair, he looked at the mass of parchments spread all over his desk. Most of what was there wasn't anything he had to tackle right off, more like bits he needed kept abreast of, such as legislation and what was going on. They were areas he could tackle a little at a time and not worry about.
Fingers drumming faster, he grinned a tad, something evil. He was thinking about the situation with Lucius. By now, he was sure it was well in hand. The people he had contacted about Fudge were already doing what he wanted. Very good there. He expected results in a couple of days, in fact. If what he knew of the matter held true, Fudge was going to back away from Lucius so fast you should be able to see smoke trails from the dust kicked up. Even better.Next came the intelligence gathering he set several up to tend to when it came to what Lucius was doing to negate what his son had done. Bella, despite being Narcissa's sister, hated Lucius. She hadn't liked him before going to Azkaban and liked him even less now since he had made sure he wiggled out of punishment the last go 'round. Though she was insane, something even he knew, she could put on a damned good act when she needed to. She had done so with her sister, getting out of her and Lucius all that was going on. While he knew most of what she brought him from others, she managed to get enough insider information on what Lucius and his solicitor were planning that he could counter whatever it was he would try. And he would, too. Oh yes, he would ensure that Draco paid the full penalty for what he had done.Once he was sure that Lucius would be unable to help his son, he was going to then make damned certain none of those in Malfoy Manor would help the Ministry. So far, this was the biggest of his concerns. If it looked like everything else he was trying would fail, Tom was sure Lucius would think nothing of going to the Ministry and singing. Well, he was going to make damned sure that wasn't going to happen. He already had those he needed in place to help him. By the time they were done, Lucius, Draco and Narcissa would keep their traps shut and fall in step with what he wanted. If not—well, they wouldn't live to talk to anyone. He would make damned sure of it.That grin growing, he thought over all he planned for this mess and was pleased. Yes, it would work out quite nicely. And he would get revenge over the situation they had put him in without giving up what it was. In the end, he would have what he wanted out of it and wouldn't fear being exposed. Perfect. As he thought over the situation, his mind once more went to Severus. Severus—the man, and his loyalty was still niggling him, hard. The more he thought about it, the more he was leaning towards the Potions Master was a spy. While it was one thing to think he was, it was another to prove it. As of now, he had no chance at doing so.Harry and Black might be the key there. For now, though, he had no more chance of getting them to talk about Snape than he would talk about some of the dealings on his end. Until there was trust, it wasn't happening. No, he had no way until then. At some point, though, he would find out. If Snape was a spy, hell was coming for the man. Traitors were something he would not tolerate. After shaking his head, he straightened up then picked up the nearest parchment and began to read. While he wouldn't manage to plow through everything on the desk tonight, he would complete some. A little a night was all it took to keep on top of all that came in. With what he had in the works, he needed to stay atop it. Besides, it always tired him out before bedtime and left him sleeping well. As boring as some of what was here was, it was better than any potion out there to put him to sleep.
Sirius was pleased. While it was getting towards bedtime, he had managed to keep Harry out of their room for most of the night. Sure, he dozed off plenty, but he had been more alert than before. That fact alone was great. He had even managed to interest him in playing some games or talking some. It wasn't how he had been before, but it was moving in the right direction.
For supper, he had taken the idea he used at breakfast and they had dined in the kitchen. Before then, though, he managed to get out of Harry what he would like to eat, rather than have the elves guess and serve up what they came up with. In doing so, Harry had eaten more than he had been. Perfect. It wasn't completely back to normal, but it was a step there and he was going to remember it.Tom had checked in a couple of times over the day, but hadn't stayed long. As far as Sirius was concerned, that was fine too. The less they had to deal with the arse, the better off the two of them were. He wanted Harry back as close to normal as he could get before they took on dealing with him more. All he hoped was they had the time they needed to get Harry in better shape before they were forced. At the moment, he and Harry were curled up on a settee in one of the parlors in front of a roaring fire. It was easy to hear the blustery wind howling outside, pelting the windows with the rain that was falling. Holding Harry close, he gave him a squeeze then said, “I vote we have the elves bring us some hot cocoa and we just sit here until we get ready for bed. We'll make sure they put whipped cream on it, too.”“That sounds good,” Harry admitted, leaning against his godfather with a small smile on his face.Once he called an elf and the creature popped in with what they wanted, he poured them both a mug, added a ton of whipped cream to both and handed one to Harry. After a sip of his own and giving a contented sigh, he wrapped his arm back around the younger wizard and held him close. “This is nice. Perfect for a windy, chilly night.”“It is,” Harry agreed with a nod.Though Sirius wanted to delve into the why behind what Harry was dealing with, as he was sure there was more to it than what he knew, he didn't think it was a good idea. At least not now. He wanted Harry in a better place before he tackled the issue. Either that, or have Nagini start. He wasn't sure what she'd accomplished yet and he didn't think Harry was ready yet. Instead, he was going to see what he could do to push him back towards where he was normally.Sirius thought it over a few minute then said, as Harry just stared into the fire and sipped his drink, “I think I'm going to give over the research for a few days. Not only is it mind numbing, but I'm getting nowhere with what we need to find. That's damned frustrating. So, I think we'll see about having some fun and doing other bits. Tomorrow we'll sit down and come up with something. What do you think?” Then he looked down at Harry and waited.“I can see where all that research would make you mental,” Harry admitted softly, shaking his head. “Too much like the homework they piled on at school.”“True,” Sirius laughed, giving him a squeeze. “I know we need all the info we can get our hands on with this mess, but you need a break sometimes. Especially when you're getting nowhere with it. So, we'll find something to get into. Not sure what, but we will. Even if it makes Tom mental.”Harry smiled a little and nodded, but didn't say anything.“I think this will be the first time we've managed to spend quite a lot of time alone together and can just talk without worrying someone will overhear since I escaped,” Sirius observed, keeping an eye on Harry's face. “We should take advantage of it and talk. I'm sure the arse has some of his elves keeping an eye on us so he knows if we're plotting or something, but we can just talk.”“We can,” Harry agreed. “Not sure how long I can stay awake, so you might want to find something else to keep you busy, but I'll try.”“You're doing better with it,” Sirius told him. “We'll manage. While we talk, we'll find something to do, don't worry. It'll be nice, though. Even when we talked through the mirrors, we had a limited time because you had classes and couldn't stay up too late. So, we now have plenty without worrying about you having to go to bed. We can even stay up late, raid the kitchen and do whatever.”“You know, that sounds like fun,” Harry admitted softly, liking the idea already. If he wasn't so tired, he might enjoy it more.“Hey, if we sleep more during the day, we can do that. Do whatever all night and just be lazy during the day,” Sirius grinned. “I'm sure, between the two of us, we can find something fun. As Tom sleeps at night, we won't have to worry about him.”“There is that,” Harry nodded, chuckling just a little bit. After putting his mug on the table by the settee, Sirius wrapped his other arm around Harry and held him close. Giving him a kiss on the temple, he let out a contented sigh. “You know, I don't like this situation any more than you do. That's rather fucking obvious. What I do like, though, is being with you all the time. I don't think it was something we were ever going to manage any other way. We can make the best of it and do all the bits we talked about through the mirrors.”Though Harry felt that now familiar ache in his chest at the kiss, something that once more brought up the memories of that—whatever it was before they were pulled here, he pushed it aside the best he could and nodded. “True. We can't do some of it, as we can't leave, but we're together.” Then, quietly, he added, not sure how Sirius would take it, “And we don't have people like the Weasleys and Dumbledore trying to keep us apart.” He hadn't ever said that aloud before, or even hinted that's how he felt, so he wasn't sure about Sirius’ reaction.“Noticed that too, did you?” Sirius asked softly, looking down at him.“I thought it was my imagination at first, but I don't think it is,” Harry told him, looking over his shoulder at his godfather.“I felt the same way,” Sirius told him, giving him a squeeze. “Not sure what was going on with that bit, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized they probably were. Molly—I get that. She was trying to mother you, but Albus I still don't. It's one of those things that had me curious.”Harry shut his eyes and sighed softly. The tired was starting to creep in again and he didn't know how long he would be awake, but he wanted to talk about this a little more. In a soft, quiet voice, he said, “I didn't want her to mother me. While it was nice to have someone to care about me in that way, it wasn't what I wanted. What I wanted was to have you as my godfather, like mum and dad wanted. It's—I don't know, Sirius. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are very nice and I see them as a relative of sorts, but not parents. Too much went on that they were never going to end up as parental figures.” However, in his mind, he once more snarled at Draco for taking away the chance to have Sirius as the godfather and adding in the mess that ruined it. He just didn't say anything aloud about it.“And that's what I wanted with you,” Sirius told him with a small smile. Then, with a heavy sigh, he added, “And it ended up screwed because of so much. I don't get it or the why with Albus, but it was there.”“I doubt we'll ever figure out why, what with how he is,” Harry groused, slouching down, but leaning back against Sirius. “It doesn't matter now, I suppose. We're together, all that matters in the end.”“Very true,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “Which means I get to corrupt you all I want and no one can say a damned word,” he added, trying to lighten up the conversation as he didn't think now was the time to delve into the worst. He would bring it up again at some point, but not until Harry was in a better place.“Oh yes,” Harry chuckled softly, looking at Sirius the best he could. “And no one can say anything.”“Exactly! Which means, you're going to get a crash course in bad behavior.” Sirius laughed, giving him another squeeze. Eyes lifting and drifting to the fire after a particularly hard gust of wind that rattled the windows, he smiled a little. It wasn't perfect, but he was with Harry and could handle whatever.Harry snuggled back against Sirius and finished his cocoa then put the mug aside. Turning slightly, so he was partially on his side, he said, “Maybe we can get the fire going good in our room and fall asleep in front of it like we did earlier today. The bed is really comfortable, don't get me wrong, but I liked sleeping in front of the fire.”“I did as well. Yeah, I think we can do that. We'll just have the elves come up with a nice, squishy mattress of some kind for us so we're comfy. Either that, or we just lay there until we're about asleep and move to the bed.”“That could work,” Harry said softly. “Just sprawl out and relax.”“I say that's a good plan and we'll go for it,” Sirius nodded. Then he summoned an elf and had them set it up.Once the creature popped out, he patted Harry to have him stand. Once his godson moved, he stood with a groan then put a hand on Harry's back and guided him towards their room. While this wasn't perfect when it came to Harry being back, it was something that made him feel better as it showed progress. As long as they kept moving in the right direction, he could deal with it. Because, honestly, if Harry hadn't started showing progress, he wasn't sure he wouldn't have followed his godson right down the road to depression. With all he dealt with, that could end up really bad, in plenty of ways.Talking quietly as they made their way to the bedroom, he decided he just needed to take it one day at a time and make small steps. All he had to do. Soon Harry would be back and they could press on to whatever else this nightmare threw at them.
