Chapter 15
Amelia opened the door, pleased to see Hermione and Eridanus standing there.
"Hermione, love, come in." She stepped aside to let them in. "Where's Sirius?"
Hermione placed Eridanus on the floor, allowing him to run off. "He's at work," she answered her mother. "There was a big break in one of the cases. They think they found some of the remaining Death Eaters at large."
Amelia gasped. "That sounds dangerous. Will he be all right?"
Squashing down her own feelings of worry, Hermione nodded. "Yes, I think he'll be fine. He's a seasoned fighter." She walked into the living room, taking a seat. Eridanus was sitting in front of the telly, watching one of the cartoons. "Besides, Harry and Ron are with him. He'll be safe. They'll be safe."
Amelia frowned, watching the worry lines appear on her daughter's face. "There's no need to pretend, Hermione," she said gently.
"I'm not worried," Hermione snapped, glaring at her mother.
"Who are you trying to convince: yourself or me?" Amelia shook her head. She could tell Hermione was stressed out over the situation. "I'll go make you some tea." She excused herself.
Hermione watched Eridanus clap his hands and she smiled. Her little boy was safe and sound here with her. Sirius would be safe and sound too. He was a grown man… he was more than capable of protecting himself.
But what if something happened? Her mind whispered, planting negative thoughts into her mind. She couldn't lose him… not after everything they had been through.
"Be safe today, Sirius," Hermione said, wrapping her arms around his waist.
"I will, Hermione," he promised. He gently kissed her. "I'll be home tonight, I promise."
"I'm just worried," she admitted. "These are death eaters, not some kid breaking and entering."
"I've fought death eaters before, Hermione." He tucked a curl behind her ear. "I'll be safe, Hermione. I swear it."
"Come home to me, tonight." She leaned up on her tiptoes and gave him one last kiss.
Sirius gave her a goofy grin. "See you tonight," he said before disappearing into the Floo.
"I've made chamomile," Amelia said, breaking Hermione from her thoughts. "I thought it would help calm you down."
"Thank you," Hermione said, accepting the cup. "I'm sorry for being so snippy with you. You were only asking."
Amelia gently placed her hand on Hermione's shoulder. "It's all right, Hermione. I can tell you're stressed. That's normal for wives of soldiers, police men, and other people with dangerous jobs."
"I know he can handle himself," Hermione said. "I just can't shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen."
"He'll be fine," Amelia assured her. "Now, let's take your mind off things."
Hermione nodded. There was no use dwelling on her feelings. There was nothing she could do at this point. She remembered there was something she wanted to ask her mother on their visit.
"Oh, Mum, there's something I was wondering."
"Yes?" Amelia asked, arching her brow.
"Sirius and I were wondering if we could have our wedding in the backyard."
Moisture filled in Amelia's eyes. "Really?" she sniffled, a smile appearing on her face. "You want to get married here?"
Hermione nodded, smiling as well. "I think it would be perfect in the spring with all the flowers in bloom."
"Oh, Hermione, that's perfect."
"So yes?"
"Of course!" Amelia hugged her daughter tightly. "Your father and I would be honored if you got married here. It would mean the world."
Hermione felt herself start to cry. Seeing her mother so happy was making her feel happy as well. "Mum, thank you."
Amelia sniffed. "Oh sweetheart, there's no need to thank me. This will always be your home, no matter where you go in life. You and your family will always be welcome here."
Hermione cried even harder. "I love you, Mum. I love you so much."
"Sweetheart, don't cry," Amelia said, rubbing Hermione's back. "You're fine, I'm fine, everyone's fine."
"I know, I just can't help it." Hermione sniffled. "I'm so happy to have you."
She felt a little hand tug on her jeans. Looking down, she saw Eridanus looking up at her with a worried expression. "Mummy? Okay Mummy?"
Sniffling, Hermione smiled at her son. She scooped him up into her arms. "Eridanus, Mummy is fine. She's happy." She hugged him close.
Eridanus hugged her back, smiling at his Mum.
Hermione played Eridanus on the ground. "Why don't we go outside to swing?"
Eridanus cheered loudly before running off towards the backdoor. He bounced up and down, waiting for someone to let him outside.
Amelia opened the door, letting him out. Hermione and her followed him. Placing Eridanus into the swing, Amelia started to push him.
Hermione smiled wistfully. She used to swing on this tree during her childhood. It was one of her favorite pastimes, especially during the summer nights, when the sun was setting and the air was cool.
Eridanus laughed, his little hands reaching up into the sky. "More!" he cried.
"He's learning more and more words," Amelia commented. "I'm sure he'll be speaking Proper English by the time he's two."
Hermione laughed. "Oh, I'm not sure. We'll see."
"You spoke early on," Amelia said. "Shocked us actually. Looking back though, I'm sure most of your early advancements were due to the magic in you."
"Maybe," Hermione said. "I wonder how it is for other Muggleborn wizards and witches."
"Another thing you can research someday," Amelia said. "How are things going now? With your time travel stuff?"
"Good," Hermione said with a nod. She took a seat in the grass so she could watch her mother push Eridanus. "I've been making a lot of headway."
"That's good. I love to see you do something you're so passionate about."
Hermione smiled.
"You've always been such a little researcher." Amelia laughed.
"Hello," Hugo said from the doorway. He had just gotten home from the office. "How's my family today?"
"Good," Hermione and Amelia replied at the same time.
"Poppy!" Eridanus cried.
Hermione looked to Eridanus in shock. Hugo dropped his briefcase and went running into the backyard.
"Did he just say Poppy?" Hugo asked breathlessly.
"I think so," Hermione nodded. "Oh, my sweet baby is growing up."
"It goes by fast," Hugo said sadly. He took Eridanus out of the swing and hugged him tightly.
"Poppy," Eridanus said again, giggling wildly.
Hermione smiled at the scene. It was perfect.
"Hermione, what's that!" Amelia said, pointing to something.
Turning, Hermione saw Ginny's silver horse hovering. "Hermione," Ginny's frantic voice rang out, "There's been an accident. Come to St. Mungo's right away." The horse disappeared.
Her stomach turned to lead. She stood there frozen, going into shock.
"Hermione?" Amelia waved her hand in front of Hermione's face. "Hermione, love, snap out of it. You need to go."
Hermione stumbled forward, her eyes still slightly glazed over. "Eridanus," she mumbled, turning around.
"Just go, Hermione, we'll watch him," Hugo assured her.
Gripping her wand tightly, she turned on the spot, Disapparating.
Hugo and Amelia exchanged nervous looks.
