Chapter 15
Amelia waited for Rufus to take a seat in front of her desk then activated the most powerful wards at her disposal and leaned back. “I think we need to discuss some sensitive matters,” she stated.
“About what?” Rufus asked, curious. While they were juggling some big cases, he wasn’t sure one stood out above the others, besides anything dealing with You-Know-Who. Since the year before when several high ranking people had seen the maniac, including himself, they had managed to make Fudge see the light. While it wasn’t full war mode, it was damned close.
“The Harry Potter case,” she sighed, shaking her head.
“What about it?” He inquired, brow furrowed. “I thought we were all firm in the stance this is related to You-Know-Who.”
“That’s the line, yes,” Amelia nodded. With a grumble she then added, “I’m wondering if we need to start looking in another direction.”
“What makes you think that?” Rufus asked, highly curious about her line of thought on the matter and why she came to this conclusion.
With a sigh, she began to explain. “It’s some of what we’ve heard about Albus, and his oversight of the young man, which makes me curious. There is also the fact we’ve heard nothing of Mr. Potter. We both remember what the last war was like. If You-Know-Who has Mr. Potter, I’m sure we would have heard by now. In fact, we would have found his body displayed in such a way, probably with a message, which would have left little doubt who had killed him. After all, it’s common knowledge he sees Mr. Potter as some kind of a threat.”
“Very true,” Rufus admitted as he pondered what she said. It did make some sort of sense. However, he mentioned, “What about Snape? It’s factored in here as well. We’ve all heard he’s a Death Eater. With him vanishing so close to the time Potter did, the disappearances are probably related.”
“Well, yes,” Amelia conceded with a nod. “We’re just not sure how.” Letting out a soft groan, she told him, “While I want to keep investigating the line we are, I also want to pursue another to see what pops up.”
“Which line do you want us looking into?” Rufus asked, leaning forward, curious.
“I want to look into what Albus is up to,” Amelia stated. Then she explained, “We’ve looked into him a little and have both agreed something is off. I want to dig further into the heap to find out where the dung smell is coming from.”
While Rufus liked the idea on general purposes because he felt sure Albus knew plenty they needed, he had to ask. “Is there a theory behind this? Like Albus is responsible for him vanishing?” He didn’t think Albus was behind the boy going missing, but it was the only thing he could think of.
With a heavy sigh, Amelia shook her head then explained, “My thought is Mr. Potter may have run off. As he’s 16, he can leave if he wants, legally. If that was his choice, the Trace would have vanished in a week. If he had help, they could have broken it. With the money he has and the rest of his inheritance, he would easily find a place to live. And if he had help, he could hide himself quite well.”
“Who would help him?” Rufus asked, brow furrowed. “Are you thinking Snape is involved?” While he hadn’t thought of this theory, it did make some kind of sense, from what he knew of so much. How viable was up for debate, though.
“No,” Amelia shook her head. “Him—I’m sure his disappearance has to do with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in some way, especially if he is a Death Eater. We both know the life expectancy of most Death Eaters is low. He was on borrowed time if he was still. My guess is there is someone, though. If there is, we won’t prosecute them as its Mr. Potter’s choice. I just want to know why and how Albus is involved. It’s my suspicion if Mr. Potter vanished of his own free will, Albus factors in.”
“Agreed,” Rufus nodded. “I take it you want this line of investigation kept quiet then?”
“Absolutely,” Amelia told him with a determined nod, voice firm. “I do not want this leaking out. And no one who has any connection to Albus should be involved. If in doubt, don’t use them.”
“Understood,” Rufus agreed. “I know a couple we can use who will stay circumspect. Is there a way you want me to go about this or just do it my way?”
“That I’ll leave to your discretion,” Amelia told him. “However you decide.”
“I think I’ll start at the beginning and go from there,” Rufus mused as he rubbed his chin. “Let’s start right after James and Lily died then move forward. I’m sure if there is something, it’ll go way back.”
“Very true,” Amelia agreed. “I want frequent updates and will help all I can on my end. I’ll poke around about Albus since I’ve been looking there already, so it won’t look odd.”
“It’ll help,” Rufus agreed. “I do have to ask—if we do dig up something on Albus, what are you going to do?”
“Prosecute him if I can,” she told him honestly. “If it’s not prosecutable—we’ll see. It’s a bridge I’ll cross when we come to it.” She then added, “I’ll sign off on any overtime incurred. Just label it the standard of special commissioned investigation as usual. This way people will naturally assume it has to do with the war effort.”
“Will do,” Rufus agreed. While this would end up plenty of extra work, he liked the idea. It may end up coming to naught, but he was certain he would turn up plenty they could not only use, but would need in the long run. One way or another, this line of investigation could only help them.
It wasn’t until most in the Auror’s office went home for the night that Rufus summoned two of his Hitwizards; Witt and Knupper. They’re ones who he trusted implicitly. Not only were they loyal to him, but circumspect to the nth degree. He needed both in this assignment.
After they took a seat, he activated the wards then launched right in. He passed them a copy of the mission he wrote up then explained it. When he finished, he told them, “Start at the beginning with Potter’s home life and go from there. Just tread carefully. There is a squib living nearby who might be there at the behest of Albus. Steer clear of her. I made sure to include her name on the brief there. I’ll let you use your initiative on how to go about this. Just avoid anyone connected with Albus. If there is something you need from someone like that, let me know and Amelia will take it on.”
Witt gave his boss a nod then asked, “When it comes to Muggles, such as the lad’s family—are we allowed to use spells? After all, we don’t want to fight with them or for them to remember.”
“Oh yes,” Rufus assured them. “Just use the utmost caution with it. Do what you need and I’ll back you up. As will Amelia.”
“Do you have a deadline for this mission?” Knupper inquired, taking in everything on the parchment Rufus handed them.
“No,” Rufus shook his head. “I want it as fast as you can manage, but take all the time you need.”
“If Albus is involved in this, it means we’re going to have a tough time ferreting out what he’s up to. He hides his agenda and what he’s doing very well,” Knupper observed with a dry snort.
“I know,” Rufus conceded with a weary sigh.
“And his followers will each only know a tiny part of what he’s planning. Most he will keep to himself,” Witt added.
“More I know,” Rufus groused, shaking his head. “Just find out what you can. When you finish, Amelia and I will take on dealing with Albus. For now, focus on background. Of everything, the background may give us the best hints.”
“Right,” Witt stated, pulling out the notebook he used to write down what he needed to. “Give us what you have on this so we are aware of some of the basics.”
With a determined nod, Rufus told them all he knew from many areas. It could only help them start at the right place and not have to learn as they go.
With a soft groan, Harry shifted in the chair then crossed his legs. He looked at Eddie then nodded, “We can manage theory, I think. Shouldn’t be a problem.”
“While those of us in the house might be behind on the newest advancements in some areas, if they are spelled out in the books you have, we’ll muddle through.” When he heard about this scheme from Severus and Sirius, he immediately accepted. It would make all of them feel ever so useful. “I say we spend a half an hour each morning on the subject with a short break in between. Then you can join the other two.”
“Fine with me,” Harry nodded. While the thought of covering all the subjects back to back sounded daunting, he could manage as a half an hour each didn’t sound bad. It wouldn’t be like a boring lecture and he could go at his own pace. A bonus to this was also if he ran into a tough spot, he could stop and work through it as his own pace. As tough as some of the subjects were, he would probably need the extra help.
“I’ll meet with Sirius and Severus today to see when they want us to start,” Eddie smiled, already looking forward to this. “And discuss it with the others so they can help with areas they are masters at. It’s for the best to have those help who are better at some subjects than others.”
“If you hit a trouble spot, let us know, Harry,” Eddie told him. “We’ll work through it so you do understand. Essays—not sure on those and will let Severus and Sirius tend to assigning such if they feel they are needed. From what they said, most of what you’ll be doing is practical while you work. While we have the library, not sure if we would have what you need for essays.”
“I could do without essays,” Harry chuckled, giving a cheeky grin. “Rather chuffed about not having to, actually. I can work some of this out better by just talking it through, I think.”
“It might actually work better,” Eddie admitted. “It seems to make whatever stick more if you talk it through. Either way, no homework from us.”
“I adore that concept,” Harry laughed, leaning back. He then added, “I think I’ll get a better education this way anyway, honestly. Let’s face it, doing the work and walking through with someone as you do works a tad better if you ask me. The same with going at my own pace. I know I’ll have issues with Transfiguration and Charms as they are far tougher. Potions I’m not taking, thankfully, as whatever I need to know Severus can teach me far better than doing it with a book. The rest—not too worried about it.”
“Yes, I believe this is the best way to go,” Eddie nodded. “You’ll get one on one attention and I doubt it’ll take nearly the time for you to catch on as it would in school. Besides, we can make it far more fun for you.”
“Well, since we have this worked out, let’s go find the others, hm? We’ll fill them in and go from there,” Eddie smiled, floating back so Harry could stand. Oh, he liked this idea and was sure the others would as well. Yes, it would help them plenty and they could give Harry an education unlike anything he would get in school.
After taking a step back when he finished the fixture, Sirius nodded. One more to go and this hallway was done, thankfully. Then he would work his way down the stairs and start on the ground floor. Once he finished, he would key in Severus and Harry then and they were good to go with the lights until they started working on the rooms on the upper floors.
With a tired groan, he then stretched and grinned. As always, that felt good after you finished some tasks and rejuvenated you slightly. Picking up his butterbeer from a small table, he took a sip then sighed contentedly. Though Severus hadn’t mentioned it, he knew the man was pleased he had cut down on his normal beer consumption. Even he knew if he kept going how he was, he would have problems. Though Wizards had a better constitution than Muggles for so much, even they had the same issues when it came to the booze. He probably would have started to deal with them soon if he hadn’t done something about it. Besides, now he didn’t crave it as much or felt he needed it to get through the day. That was good, plenty good.
Being out of that bloody house and from under Albus’ thumb helped him plenty. Having Harry and Severus around all the time with plenty constructive to do helped even more. It was as close as he could get to a normal life until Wormtail was caught and he was cleared. And he’d take it. He rather enjoyed this, though normally domestic chores and housework were things avoided, even if you could do them all Magically. As for decorating? No chance. His apartment before Azkaban has the basics and came decorated. That was good enough for him. This, though, was different. It felt—well, like they were making it their own and setting up house permanently. It helped his attitude towards it. Plus you could see a visible difference in what they were doing because it was in such bad shape. That—it gave him a feeling of accomplishment. Add in Severus and Harry were helping and he adored it in a way he hadn’t thought possible.
As he moved down and started working on the last of the fixtures for this hallway, he smiled, humming just a little. Sure, staying busy and not thinking about so much, like the danger they were in, helped plenty. It distracted them from worrying so much, which they needed. It was more, though. It was—well, they were setting up a life together, something he really hadn’t thought about with anyone before. He knew from talks, Severus was the same way. Harry was different, but he liked it for the same reasons they did because of how horrid his life had been. For the first time, the three of them really connected with someone else who felt how they did and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. He loved it. So did they.
While there was much to work out and deal with, something they were tending to as well, he would take this over all they had dealt with for so long. It didn’t seem as horrid, though some of the issues were plenty bothersome, as was so much else. They were still in plenty of danger, especially him, but it felt better and he was more confident about their ability to deal with it than he had been.
As he layered on the spells he needed, Sirius brow furrowed just a little. Somewhere in him he felt some guilt over their runner. After all, as he told Harry plenty of times, there were causes worth dying for in this world. The war was one of them. Guilt over running away and abandoning the fight was there. He had vowed to finish the fight and help stop the evil which had taken so much from him over the years, but reneged on it. That caused issues. On the other hand, the reason he had done so meant more to him; protecting the two people he loved and cared about most in the world. The odds of Severus and Harry dying were so great that this seemed like the best solution to him. Not to mention the war wasn’t the straight forward fighting the evil the way the last had been. Instead, this time there was more at play that put so many in more danger, like Harry.
A heavy sigh escaping him as he worked, he once more reminded himself that this was the right way to do this. Harry wouldn’t be a sacrifice to the war like his parents ended up. Albus wouldn’t get his hands on him and turn him into what he wanted, let alone make him face the maniac. No, Harry was far better right here. The same for Severus. Though Severus was different in that he made a choice to spy, no matter how manipulated he was, it still didn’t feel right since they were both sure Albus planned to sacrifice Harry in some way. Yes, this was better, far better. They could deal with the issues when it came to Harry that Albus planned for then solve them in another way. The war could play out how it was and they would stay safe. It wasn’t being a sheep like the general populace, but a way to protect the one in the most danger.
Feeling better about their choices and how he sorted through so much, he gave himself a nod and pressed on. He wanted to finish this so he could spend time with the other two, even if it was just working. Spending time with them was something he adored and would do it as much as he could.
Though he stayed hidden so Sirius couldn’t see him, the Mad Monk smiled as he watched. Yes, Eddie was right; he and Sirius would get along famously. It was time to reveal himself. Since the man appeared in deep thought, he would wait until he was more alert to do so. Tonight, perhaps, or tomorrow. He would very soon.
As Sirius finished the final fixture and started down the stairs, the Mad Monk floated off, planning to visit the headless one to talk to her about some matters. When he returned to the house, he would make his choice of when to reveal himself to Sirius.
Remus sighed when the tea appeared in front of them and picked up the cup. He had been out working with some folks on various issues and was now worn out from it. As he took a sip, he smiled then leaned back in the squishy chair Albus had conjured for him. “Nothing went wrong. We managed to shore up plenty with warding and other areas, protecting some others, such as the house in Godric’s Hollow. While it won’t stop You-Know-Who if he really wants to get in it, it’ll slow him down. Moody and I also took it upon ourselves to do some warding on poor old Bathilda’s home. She’s very frail by now and wouldn’t be able to defend herself if someone goes after her. Then we protected some of the graves. Might not be needed, but we thought it was for the best.”
“It is,” Albus nodded, sipping his own heavily sweetened tea. Though it was the middle of the school day, he was taking time to talk to Remus. There was much to do, after all. He then said, “I’ve heard nothing from contacts in the Ministry about Harry and Severus. Severus—I think they’ve written him off, sadly. His reputation and former Death Eater status is probably working against him here. While I vouched for him after the last war, I’m sure most think he is still a Death Eater.”
“While it’s sad and doesn’t help us, it’s the right way to view it, Albus,” Remus said, shifting around slightly and crossing his long legs, smoothing his robes down over them. “Unless you want to give up plenty, we need to let them think that way. Until we have proof of what happened or so much else, you can’t reveal he was a spy. If you do, plenty will want the information he gave you.” This would sound logical to Albus, so he was going with it.
“There is that, yes,” Albus nodded sadly, not at all willing to give up that particular secret unless there was a good reason for it. Poor Severus—after the war ended, he would ensure everyone knew his secret and how much he helped. Until then, people could think what they wished on the topic. “I think—yes, we need to focus more on Harry and Sirius. Though, if Tom does have them, their bodies will turn up soon somewhere.”
“I think one of the first things we need to do is work on the Order and shoring up plenty,” Remus added with a sad look on his face which would be expected of him. “We need to protect ourselves because of what Harry and Sirius know. Though if there is anyone who can get them out of You-Know-Who’s clutches, it’s Sirius and Harry. Working together, they can do more. I just don’t want to imagine what they are going through.” He then forced a shudder and shake of his head.
“Nor do I, but you are correct.” Albus told him, sad look on his face as well. He just hoped Tom would try to kill Harry since Harry could return. If Harry played it right, he could escape that way, something they all needed, desperately. “I’ll set up a meeting, late, sometime this week and we’ll go over plans to protect ourselves and shift some other areas to throw Tom off. While Harry knows some, it’s not close to what Sirius does. And Tom will get the information out of them.” Then he winced when he thought about the Prophecy. Though Harry didn’t end up in the mess at the Department of Mysteries last year, he had told him what the Prophecy said. Tom knowing would help nothing. As Harry’s shields weren’t the best, he was sure Tom could get anything out of him he wanted. No, this wasn’t good.
“You have an idea of what we can do to help with so much? Well—beyond what we are?” Remus inquired, figuring the old man was already cooking up something new. The more he knew on the topic, the more he could help the three stay safe. That he wanted.
“I do,” Albus nodded. “We’ll go over them in the meeting. And I’ll need you and a couple of others who are good with Runes and Arithmancy to help. I’ve found some new tracking spells which are based on them. We’re going to employ them. I’ve tried the standard, such as owls, but they come back undeliverable, of course. I want to try everything possible to find them if they are still alive. Though Tom can protect himself well, he can’t cover everything, which means we just need to find the chink to get in.”
Looking intent, Remus nodded, planning to pass this along to the others when he left. While he didn’t have details yet, they could prepare a little and this would give them time. Time was what they needed and he would help all he could to ensure they had it.
