Chapter 14
Harry gritted his teeth and narrowed his eyes as he read the letter from Hermione. Now he was glad he waited to read it today since it would have ruined the mood last night. With a shake of his head, he tossed it onto the table and glared at it, crossing his arms over his chest, teeth grinding.
“Harry?” Remus asked, a concerned expression on his face when he saw the look on Harry’s. As normal, it was morning and they were sorting through the mail. The worst was already handled, so they were taking on the personal and easy business areas.
“Hermione,” Harry growled, still glaring at the letter. Before either of them could ask, he shook his head then explained, “Back to huffing at me, demanding answers.”
After seeing Sirius look at him, Remus sighed then soothed, “I’ll help you write reply to her. We’ll come up with something together.”
“Oh no,” Harry growled. “I’m doing it, alone. She’s either going to stop or we won’t write. Never did I come close to demanding anything from her or sniping. She can afford me the same courtesy!”
“The way to go about it,” Sirius nodded, grinning a tad at what Harry might end up saying to her.
“Not playing this game,” Harry snarled, taking a sip of his cappuccino. “That little boy is long gone and she’s about to find out that fact.”
“We won’t say a word,” Remus told him with a small smile himself. Hermione would learn quickly to knock it off, that’s for certain.
“Had it with this crap,” Harry huffed. “We’ve not been back a full month and it’s already started. Very much not putting up with it.”
“And you don’t have to,” Sirius assured him, tossing the letter he had been looking at aside. “Make that clear. They want to reconnect, they do it on your terms.”
“Exactly,” Remus agreed with a firm nod.
“How it will go,” Harry stated, determined bent to his voice. “The girls aren’t this way. I say leave it, they do nothing other than to say something like if I need to talk, they’ll listen or to give me a hug.”
“The way true friends act,” Remus told him.
“Going to point that out as well,” Harry grumbled, once more glaring at the letter.
“If you need help, let me know. We can compose it together again,” Remus offered, smiling a little.
“Will do,” Harry nodded though planned to tend to this himself. It would stop now or they weren’t talking, all there was to it.
Once Sirius was off the phone, having tended to the mail, he leaned back with a tired groan. “We’ll be doing the inspections tomorrow and the next day, overnight. Safest that way, we all agree, so we can expect to be up all night.”
“The way to go, honestly,” Remus told him. “Not only safer, but less likelihood of us being exposed. No one has dug up that we’re behind it yet, so this will keep it a secret for a while longer.”
“Agreed,” Sirius told him. “We need to get the elves to make sure the other two floors are done.” Before Remus could ask, he explained, “Plato and Marissa are coming in for the opening. We talked it over and decided it was best they stay here rather than a hotel. It’s far safer.” With a smile, he added, “Besides, it’ll do Harry good.”
“It will and I take no issue with them staying here,” Remus told him, smiling himself.
“Didn’t think you would,” Sirius grinned. The grin then vanishing, he added, heavy sigh to his voice, “And that’s when we start having bodyguards when we go out. Plato insists. He will have them all the time as well.” Then he explained, “He heard how bad this is, which would warrant it anyway. From what he told me, he’ll be granting some interviews as well, something which will turn up the heat. However, on the upside, he’s hiring the best there is, which means as long as Harry takes them along, he can go out on his own. Muggle areas only, of course, but it’ll give him some freedom.”
“True,” Remus agreed after thinking it over. “He’ll like that.”
“Oh yes,” Sirius smiled. “Give him something to do.”
“Right,” he said, sobering up. “We still have a ton to do. Let’s write up what still needs handled and I’ll take it from there.”
With a nod, Remus grabbed the parchment they had been working off of and planned to go from there.
Harry saw Remus and Sirius look up from what they were tending to when he cleared his throat. Since there were concerned looks there, he launched in, “The elves had me take care of a few pests they found lingering on the second and third floor. As I did that, I took a look at some of the objects they found. Most were just tainted and I got rid of them. However, there is something they found I don’t know what it is and it’s emitting some kind of dark, malevolent feeling that makes my skin crawl in a way nothing else has. I hoped you were caught up so you could take a look at it.”
Brow creased, Sirius looked at Remus, who had a similar expression on his face, then stood. “Lead the way.” Harry knew what he was doing when it came to dark objects. If it was something he didn’t know what it was or how to handle, it was not only plenty dangerous, but would need all of them to figure it out.
Remus trailed along, asking questions as they went. They all figured the house had plenty of dark, tainted objects in it from what Sirius’ parents were like, so this was probably one of them. However, if Harry needed help, it would end up worse than most. Now he wanted an idea of what they were dealing with before jumping in.
The three of them stood there and looked at the locket the elves had put back with plenty of other junk. Shaking his head at the feeling from the evil thing, Sirius told them, “We’re sending it to Albus. I don’t like him involved in anything, obviously, but he’ll know what to do with it and figure out just what the hell it is. I don’t have any idea.”
“It’s for the best, yes,” Remus agreed conjuring a box and layering on protections. “We’ll include all the readings you took along with how you have no idea what it is or remember where it came from. Nothing the readings gave us is anything we’ve encountered before. He’s best. I would say the Ministry, as they have a department to tend to such objects, but we want them involved less than Albus.”
“I agree,” Sirius nodded after Harry agreed. Levitating the object into the box, he then began layering on protections while having Remus compose a note with everything they put on it and what they knew. “He can sort it out. Plus, it’ll look good and like we’re helping a little. He’ll push for more, of course, something we’re ready for, but it might hold him off a tad.”
“Nothing is going to deter him from trying to pull us in,” Harry snorted, shaking his head and crossing his arms over his chest. “You know that. I’m sure he’s already concocted new plans for this since we’re back. And he will ensure it plays out how he wants.”
“Very true,” Remus conceded with a sad sigh. “We’ll just put him off the best we can and roll with whatever comes our way. All we can really do.”
“We’ll make sure we stay out of it,” Sirius assured the two after he finished packing the object up. “We’ve managed before in plenty of situations and will in this one as well.”
Once he finished the note, Remus attached it then shrunk the whole package before summoning Hedwig. Though it was during the day, she was there is seconds. With a smile, he sent her off with instructions. Rather than dwell on the subject, something which would just leave all of them in a bad mood, he changed topics then asked Harry, “What have you had the elves do up here? Anything specific?” He assumed as Harry said he had something in mind, so wanted to hear it.
With a grin, Harry explained, “I figured put Plato on the second floor then Marissa on the third. Having the elves do something more neutral for the second and making sure they do up one of the rooms like a study for him so he can work since he’ll tend to plenty while we sleep because of the time differences in so many places. For the third, setting it more casual. Not girly colors, of course, but brighter and using one of the rooms for a parlor of sorts. Made sure she had the room with the attached bath.”
“Good way to go about it,” Sirius nodded, the motioning everyone to follow so he could take a look at what the elves had already accomplished. “You tending to the colors and stuff or need help?”
“I have a good idea of what to use,” Harry told them then began to describe the neutral colors he thought were best.
Nodding as he listened, Remus smiled. Normally they would just let the elves have at it themselves, but Harry doing it not only gave him something to do to keep him occupied, but would give the place a more personal touch. The elves did fine of course, but this was better.
Hand on Harry’s shoulder as they walked on and looked, Sirius smiled. While this was a highly stressful situation, for all of them, moments like this reminded him they were together for the duration. It made him happy. The two he was bonded with made him happy anyway, this just added to it. They all had the experience of working with situations and staying out of the line of fire, something which would only aid them while they did the delicate dance here, so they were up to the task of protecting themselves. Though it would be about as bad as during the time he was on the run, they learned plenty over those years they could use now. All they had to do was remember what they used to do and adapt it to this situation, nothing more. If they did, they’d manage just fine and be out of here as fast as they could manage. It would just take them staying alert and keeping an eye out for problems. They could manage.
“I have some good news for a change,” Severus said, taking a seat. While Albus had asked him to come, Severus had planned to meet with him anyway as he had been summoned by the Dark Lord earlier.
“We need all the good news we can get, Severus,” Albus admitted, hoping it was something which could help them more than in minor ways for a change. “What do you have for me?”
“While it’s a minor area, it’ll give us an advantage,” Severus started. “The Dark Lord wants no part of the phones. He still considers them a Muggle device and won’t use them. It doesn’t mean some of his followers won’t, of course, but he plans to go about matters the normal way. This will give us an advantage in time when we need it.”
“Good,” Albus nodded, pleased. “We’ll have them early anyway. All Order members in the Ministry or DMLE are going to purchase phones for all of us since they can get them at a discount. Within the next couple of days from what I’ve been told. It may take us time to get used to them, but it’ll help. There will also be some protections on them for us, though not sure what they are yet. Either way, they’ll end up a huge assist.”
“Good,” Severus told him, happy they would have some kind of advantage the other side wouldn’t. Then he asked, “Now, what did you need me for?”
Albus’ face took on a serious look then he levitated the locket Sirius sent him over his desk. After shoving the letter that came with it over to Severus so he could read it, Albus explained, “This was found in Grimmauld Place. As it has curses on it, from what I can tell, I need help not only neutralizing those, but figuring out what it is.” Lowering his voice, though they were alone except for the paintings, he added, “My leaning is this is a Horcrux. However, we need to make sure before we tend to it. Then learn what we can in hopes it can help us in some way.”
A serious cast to his face, Severus gave a grave nod then scooted closer, wand out. He read Black’s letter, of course, but wanted to see what he could discover himself. “Let me see what I can find out about the curses then go from there.” As he began taking readings, he asked, “Is it just me, or does it look familiar?”
“I think it’s the Slytherin Locket,” Albus told him, pulling out books and pushing them over once he found the pages he wanted in them. “It looks like it from what I can tell. However, it leads me to wonder how it ended up in Grimmauld Place. While Sirius’ parents were—foul and known for delving into the darker end of Magic, they weren’t Death Eaters. Regulus was, as you know, but he wasn’t high ranking enough or trusted to tend to a Horcrux.”
“I know the common theory is the Dark Lord killed Regulus for some kind of failure or another, but that isn’t the case,” Severus explained distractedly as he ran through the spells to detect what might be on the locket. “The Dark Lord never knew what happened to him. His first thought, that I heard anyway, was he ran like so many. I don’t think so, but not sure.” Lowering his voice, he added, “I do think he’s dead, but not sure how.”
After taking in what Severus said, Albus gave a slow nod. “I’ll write to Sirius to see what he can determine when it comes to his brother and if it relates. Kreacher, his house elf, might know. Though it will probably end up a trial to get it out of him, he will manage in the end as he’s Kreacher’s master.”
With a distracted nod as he read through the readings, he then duplicated the parchment and handed it to Albus. “There are a couple curses on here, I think. At least they are the only ones I can detect. There may end up more layered underneath, so we need to stay cautious with this.” Then he looked at Albus and asked, “Do you know any spell to detect a Horcrux?”
“No,” Albus sighed smoothing down his beard as he read through what Severus found. “Once we have the curses off and it as safe as we can manage, we’ll see what we can determine. Well, and open it. I have a feeling whatever secrets it may hold are inside. It might take work to manage.”
“I’ll do all I can,” Severus assured him with a determined nod. “If it is one, do you have any idea where the others might be?”
“I’m working on it,” Albus told him with a heavy sigh, shaking his head after he tossed the parchment on his desk. “It takes time, Severus. There are very few clues when it comes to this.”
“Understood,” Severus nodded, eying the locket. “We need to find them before this grows worse. Not sure if they will diminish his power, but we can hope. At this juncture, we need to do something.”
“Yes, I know,” Albus admitted, readying his wand and casting the best ward he could over the object so it couldn’t harm them. He would let Severus take on the curses as he was better at them. “See what you can do, Severus, then we’ll go from there.”
With a firm nod, Severus went to work, staying cautious and being delicate. As he worked, sweating slightly as curses were hard to deal with, he began asking what clues they had on the other Horcruxes.
Keeping a close eye on the situation to help or protect Severus if he could, Albus explained what he knew of the one he was certain about. When he finished, he added, “I think, honestly, this was the one in the cave, which makes me wonder more how it ended up in Grimmauld Place. It has to factor in.”
“I say we just ignore it and focus on the others other than information which might give us hints where they are,” Severus gruffed as he worked, pleased it was going well.
“Very true,” Albus sighed as he watched. “I just don’t have much else, Severus, only vague hints. As it is, the only one we can get to is Nagini. She—well, we know she has to wait until last.”
“Agreed,” Severus admitted dourly, stripping off the top curse. “Any hints about the others?”
“Only minor hints,” Albus told him. “Nothing that will lead us to one. I’m still working on a lead for one. Let’s see how it pans out.”
With a nod, Severus then stripped the only other curse he could find off the locket and sat back, running a hand over his now sweaty forehead. “Let’s see if there is anything else on it then work on getting it open.”
Now focused on this, Albus ran what he knew to detect curses then deferred to Severus for him to do the same. As they worked, he talked about what he knew to see if they could determine anything. All help and hints were now welcome in this area, so he would toss it out there to see if Severus could see something he couldn’t.
“Well, at least he’s sticking to the topic of the locket,” Remus told Harry and Sirius after finishing the letter and passing it back to Sirius.
“And I’m not going to be any more help than I’ve already been,” Sirius shrugged. “Kreacher is dead, so there is no way to get anything out of him on the topic. I don’t remember shit on the topic.”
“Regulus’ room hasn’t been done yet, so maybe there is something in there,” Harry suggested, looking between the two.
“We’ll go hunt up what might be in there, Sirius nodded, pleased with the suggestion. “Besides, I want everything packed up in there and stored. Then the elves can redecorate. Going to have them do my old one as well when I get everything out of there. If it’s anywhere, it’s in there.”
“Though it’s been cleaned, it might take us some time,” Remus added.
“It’ll give us something to do tonight.” Sirius nodded.
“I notice the old goat didn’t tell us what the thing is,” Harry snorted, rolling his eyes.
“Didn’t expect him to, honestly,” Sirius groaned, leaning back. “I’ll ask and see what I can wiggle out of him, but not going to press too much. Well, and make noises about sending anything else odd we find to him. Should placate him a tad and it’ll look like we’re helping in some way. That should make him happy.”
“It should,” Remus nodded. Then, with a smile, he changed topics and asked Harry, knowing the answer would amuse both him and Sirius, “Does Marissa know she’s coming over with her dad?”
“Oh yes,” Harry grinned, shoulders shaking. “She’s making big plans for this and already trying to pack, deciding what clothes to bring and all that.”
“Figured,” Sirius laughed, amused at the visions he was getting of her.
“She has schoolwork to tend to, of course, but I’ll help her,” Harry told them, smiling. Sobering up, he added, “She knows we can’t do much and will end up stuck in the house for the most part, but she’s excited about this.”
“We’ll do what we can to get both of you out,” Remus assured him.
“And make sure to introduce her to Hermione and Ron,” Sirius added, grinning evilly at the vision of what she would say to those two.
“That should end up interesting,” Harry admitted, shoulders shaking a tad, a grin on his face. Since Marissa was as protective of him as he was of her, it would end up plenty interesting. Hermione was no match for a protective Marissa and having the riot act read to her.
“Oh yes, we’ll have to,” Remus added, smiling himself over it.
With a chuckle and shake of his head, Sirius then cleared his throat and said, “Let’s get on the rooms. We can knock those out then find something interesting to do.” Standing with a groan, he motioned them to follow. As it was, he was most curious what that locket was. Maybe there was something in his brother’s room which would explain it so they weren’t left in the dark.
