Chapter Fifteen
Order in the Court
“Don’t you dare say anything.”That was what Lucius had said to Harry when he arrived that morning via the floo. Harry had landed out of the floo smooth as someone who had been doing it for years. He had a relaxed smile on his face and his magic was surprisingly stable with a quiet air about him. After glimpsing Harry’s confused face, Lucius had elaborated.“I will hex you into silence if I must. I do not want to hear what my son and best friend are getting up to behind closed doors. Are we clear on that, Potter?”Harry’s smile hadn’t left until they were arriving at the Ministry and walking into the courtroom. They were early, not even the Defense was there yet. Only Kingsley who stood in wait for the judge. He was pleased to see Harry who welcomed him with a hug.“It’s good to see you, Harry,” Kingsley said.“Good to see you too, King. I…I want to thank you,” Harry told him.Kingsley smiled. “No need to thank me, Harry. I’m just happy to see you up and doing well.”The Defense arrived and the Judge stepped in. Kingsley stepped back outside to stand guard with another Auror. The Judge stared at Harry who tried not to shudder at the blank stare he got. Lucius had told him about the spell the Judges cast upon themselves, but it wasn’t something he was used to seeing.“Prosecution Malfoy, has your client Harry Potter decided on his court favor?” the Judge asked.Lucius stood up with a slow nod of his head.“He has, Your Honor.”The Judge nodded. Harry’s gaze was on the quill that flew across the parchment, recording everything that was said and done. The Judge then told Lucius to name the court favor.“We ask that the court allow us to question the defendant, Ginerva Weasley, with the use of Veritaserum.”As predicted, the Defense lawyer stood up swiftly in protest.“Objection, Your Honor. Approach?” Drizel asked. The Judge held her hand up and motioned for the two lawyers to come up. They moved around their tables to walk up to the judge. Despite his instincts screaming at him not to do it, Harry risked a look at Ginny. And wished he hadn’t.Ginny’s gaze was narrowed, her lethal stare threatening to set fire to his head. He kept his neutral look which seemed to enrage her even further. Slowly, he turned his head away and stared forward. The Judge and lawyers whispered quietly between the three until the Judge waved them away. The Judge waited until both lawyers were back at their tables to speak.“Prosecution will be granted the use of questioning the Defendant under Veritaserum. The conditions are as such…the Prosecution may ask only five questions and the Prosecution must give advanced notice when questioning shall be. There being any objections? No? Good.”Lucius leaned over, whispering in Harry’s ear. Harry nodded his head as he explained the circumstances that came about to the conditions. There wasn’t really anything he could protest about; that was what he had Malfoy for.“Prosecution will proceed,” the Judge announced.Lucius squeezed Harry’s shoulder, signaling to him that all was fine. He stood and walked back to his place in front of the Judge where opening arguments had taken place. Harry had asked that morning what would happen now. Lucius had explained that today would be him presenting their side of the case for the minor charges, providing evidence and witness testimony. He knew they were starting with the second charge – providing false testimony to government agencies.“Providing false testimony to a public service is not only deplorable, but illegal. In the war, like many other innocent witches and wizards, Mr. Potter was forced to make many sacrifices. One great sacrifice was losing the ability to carry on his family name.”Harry squirmed a little in his chair while his hand fell to the scar. It was still unpleasant to hear someone describing the attack of Bellatrix Lestrange that had led to the death of Narcissa Malfoy and his fatal injury.“I submit into evidence, Exhibit A. Twenty-five affidavits from government-run orphanages in three different countries. All twenty-five have been signed, stating that Ginerva Weasley told them that Harry Potter was an unfit father. That he had a mental deficiency that resulted in constant outbursts of rage and long bouts of deep depression. This made him unable to even foster a child, despite his strong ties to the community and a strong family support system. A hard blow for a young man who had already lost so much.”Drizel was writing down notes as she listened attentively to the blonde lawyer. Harry wasn’t sure what Ginny was doing or what her face looked like, since her lawyer blocked his view. Wizarding court, in his opinion, was quite odd. Today was Lucius’ day to present their case; the next time would be time for Drizel to defend. He wasn’t sure if this process repeated with the more severe charges.“Your Honor, the Defense would like time to authenticate those affidavits,” Drizel spoke up.Lucius flashed her a grin over his shoulder.“Already done, Your Honor. The affidavits have been authenticated and signed by the Head Auror.”Drizel made an hmm sound and made a small note on her parchment. Harry felt she wasn’t surprised and he knew she shouldn’t have been. Lucius was good at what he did. He was thorough in his investigating and ready for every possibly scenario in and outside the courtroom. With that thought in mind, Harry turned his attention back to the front, to Malfoy and Judge Pesi.Exhibit B was a signed document from Ginerva Weasley, petitioning to the goblins at Gringotts that Harry was mentally unstable. It demanded that Harry’s fortune be transferred to his then-wife-at-the-time. This was evidence of conspiracy against more than one pureblood family. Harry was not only the only living heir for the Potter family, but also the Black family and Dumbledore family.Suddenly, both Harry and Ginny’s heads snapped up. Drizel looked momentarily startled herself. Even the judge raised an eyebrow in question.“I was unaware your client has familial ties to the Black’s and Dumbledore’s,” Judge Pesi commented.“That would be because Mr. Potter values his quiet, private life. His godfather, Sirius Black, left him everything when he passed away in the War. As for Dumbledore, the Headmaster has no family to pass his name on. Mr. Potter is the closest thing he has to a grandson and he has acknowledged that fact by naming Harry James Potter as his heir. He did this not too long after the end of the War.”Harry sat stunned. The Headmaster had never told him any of this. He was shocked Lucius hadn’t told him this. He wondered briefly if his older lover knew. Dumbledore trusted Severus with a lot. He knew he would be questioning the older wizard later.Lucius provided a lot of evidence that Ginny had committed extortion, given false testimony to the orphanages, and conspiracy against the pureblood families Harry represented. The witnesses included a goblin from Gringotts and one of the Heads of the orphanages. The representation from the orphanage actually gave testimony that she had wanted to give Harry a chance, but Ginny had forced her hand by threatening her. She threatened to buy out the orphanage, cast out the children, and level the orphanage to the ground.Once again, Harry found himself stunned. He couldn’t believe Ginny had gone to such lengths just so he couldn’t have a child. What had he done in a past life to be treated like a second-rate person? Like a snobby pureblood treated a muggle-born? Had she been unhappy the whole time they were married?Harry tried his best to keep from breaking down right then and there. It hurt. It burned. Somehow Lucius seemed to sense his rapidly decreasing control and asked for a recess. Harry wasn’t sure what happened or how he suddenly found himself sitting on a bench seat in a side room. Draco suddenly appeared in his line of sight and Harry latched onto him.Draco stepped closer to stand between his legs so he could wrap his arms more firmly around the blonde’s stomach. He rested his forehead against Draco and bit back a sniffle. Draco’s hands came up to comb through Harry’s hair. For once in all the time Harry had known him, Draco was quiet. The blonde simply let him lean on him and seek comfort from him.Draco slipped a hand down and unbuttoned the top part of Harry’s robe. Harry nuzzled against him as he felt his robe being pulled back from his shoulders. He groaned into the other’s robes as a hand rubbed at his tense shoulders. Slowly, his breathing came down to a manageable level and his magic stopped swirling about him.“Feel better?” Draco whispered.Rubbing his face against his lover’s body, Harry nodded his head. He reluctantly dropped his arms and leaned his head back. Draco’s hands slid up to cup his face while he smiled down at him. Harry gladly returned the smile.“Kiss me?” he asked, so soft Draco almost couldn’t hear him.Draco chuckled but brought his face down close to the brunette’s.“You never have to ask, Harry,” Draco whispered to him before closing the distance between them.Draco, despite Harry’s efforts, kept the kiss short and chaste. He knew the recess was only short and Harry needed to get back out there. Harry seemed to sense this and let his lover break the kiss. Draco stepped away to allow Harry to stand up. Harry stood still as Draco refastened his robe and straightened it out.“Better?” Draco asked.“Better,” Harry answered.Gripping the back of Harry’s neck, Draco leaned his forehead against his.“Don’t let her get to you. Leave it all outside the courtroom. You won’t be able to win this fight if you’re only in halfway,” Draco told him.Harry nodded. Draco was right. He needed to be strong during this fight. Because that’s what it was. Before he pulled away from the blonde, Draco told him to use a little bit of magic to expel some of his nervous energy. Draco shivered as he felt a tingle of magic wash over him. Looking down, he noticed his robes were clean and straightened.“Thank you,” Draco murmured.Harry only smiled in response. He heard a door open and glanced over where he saw Lucius standing. Taking his younger lover’s hand, Draco walked over to his father. He missed the slight startling look that flashed across his father’s face.“Call me if you need me,” Draco told his father. He gave Harry a small kiss on the cheek before departing. Lucius stared after his son before turning his gaze back to his client.“Is he aware you’ve cast an illusion on his hair?” Lucius asked.Harry’s grin told him all he needed to know. Lucius clapped him on the shoulder as he guided him back to the courtroom.“That’s very sneaky, Mr. Potter.” Smirk. “Smart lad.”/……/
Severus was sitting in his favored armchair reading his book when Harry arrived from the floo. He stumbled a bit, but managed to stay standing. Severus closed his book as he took in the full vision of his young lover. The young wizard’s robes were askew, his body shook from an invisible cold, and his eyes were drooping badly. He stumbled over to Severus and collapsed down onto his lap.
Severus moved his book off to the side while slipping an arm around Harry’s waist. Severus knew how tiring the courts could be. He had gone through one with Albus after the first war; then a second time after the Dark Lord’s final fall. He had Harry to thank for providing testimony that had led to the court’s final decision to release him of all charges as a Death Eater. Spy or not, the world didn’t forgive easily.“Tiring day, little lion?” Severus asked gently.Harry nodded against Severus’ chest.“I don’t know how Lucius does it,” Harry mumbled.Severus chuckled. “He manages to make it through a court day because he has a fine bottle of Scotch waiting for him when he gets home.”Harry let out a small dry chuckle. Severus shifted his hold on Harry to slip a hand under his butt to lift him up. Harry, in his exhausted state, didn’t so much as jump. It was a pity, too. Severus would have enjoyed getting a reaction out of his lover.“Where’s Draco?” Severus asked. The body in his arms suddenly tensed at the same time the floo flared up. Harry’s eyes snapped open when he heard a shout of, “Potter!” Severus blinked as he suddenly found his arms empty. He hadn’t even heard the *pop* with Harry’s abrupt escape. When he looked up and got a good, full look of his blonde lover, Severus realized the reason behind the hasty escape.Severus could see the spell-work about the blonde’s head, which did relieve him to know that the young male wasn’t really bald. He leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees and curved his hand over his mouth, mostly to hide his smile.“Where. Is. He?” asked a clearly irritated blonde.Severus had to consider his answer before he spoke. He moved his hand to under his chin, revealing a (thankfully) neutral smile.“He was here. I suspect he’s hidden himself somewhere in the house.” Pause. “Why didn’t you break the charm off, Dragon?”Draco threw his arms up. “I tried!” Pop.Severus raised an eyebrow before breaking out in chuckles. It seems he and Draco had both forgotten how magically powerful their little lion was.Or how sneaky he is. I wonder if he did that on purpose, Severus pondered.End of Chapter FifteenOrder in the Court
