Chapter 14
While the Order wasn't as effective as it had been in the last war when it came to plenty of areas, it was in the one which mattered most; being able to assemble, en mass, and help when all hell broke loose. That was the case in Hogsmeade. Everyone, almost to the number, minus Snape who couldn't be seen with the Order or Ministry helping, was there and ready to help when the Death Eaters showed up. The Ministry was as well, with those in power taking the warning given for what it was, and the extra bodies would do plenty of good.
When the signal came the Death Eaters had shown up, Sirius and Remus were the first ones out of the Three Broomsticks, wands drawn, and ready to go. Rather than just jump right in, they went to Kingsley and let him assign them where he thought they would do the most good. It was their thought that if the Ministry forces had a plan in mind and a system in place, it was best to not muck with it. They were sent down a ways towards the other end of town where the street led to the station, thus the castle. Fine with them, it would give them time to prepare.Once they were in place, one of the Hitwizards, Shellnick, assigned them to help not only keep watch, but stay with a group of Aurors who would take on the heavy fighting because of their history at defense and how Sirius had been an Auror. As they waited, watching what looked like an all out battle going on with the Death Eaters not only destroying all they could in their path, but fighting it out with everyone along the way, Sirius clutched his wand, heart hammering. The fight was coming towards them and would make it there. They weren't the last line of defense since there were others behind them in various stages all the way to the castle gates, but they were there to stop them the best they could. He and Remus had no problem doing so. While they waited, he couldn't help but glance at the small shop he knew housed Hank's business. It pleased him greatly to see the windows all darkened and it shut up tight, probably with protection wards around it. Good. At least he left like he said he would. After thinking of Hank once more, planning to let him know how appreciated his heads up was, Sirius didn't have a chance to ponder anymore. The fight had reached them. Though the Death Eaters were still a ways off, the spells were hitting close by and it was time to go to work. Wand ready, he began firing spells of his own to help contain them and stop their progression. A quick glance at his oldest friend told him Remus was doing the same. Yeah, they were going to stop these bastards and take out as many as they could before this was over. He then asked James, silently of course, to watch out for them and focused on the task at hand. The evil arse had pulled out the biggest and most deadly of his followers for this, so he needed to stay alert. The time for playing was over.As he stuck close to Remus so the two of them could watch out for each other, he did his level best to not only help stop the arses in their tracks, but take out as many as he could. While they might get by them and head towards the next bunch waiting, they were going to lower the numbers all they could.
When the battle started, Hank watched from his chair, a passive look on his face, hands steepled and resting against his mouth. Eyes all over, he took in everything he could about the Death Eaters and their tactics. It was a case of he wanted to know should he ever have to tangle with them. The first thing he took in was the masks on most of them. As expected, they were designed to frighten.
Despite the masks, he could easily pick out Lucius for various reasons from the wand, what he could see of it, and the long blond hair sticking out from the hood. Since Lucius was one he dealt with on a regular basis, he focused on him to take in what he was doing to ensure he knew what to watch for if he ever had to defend himself against the man. When he let his eyes slide from Lucius, he tried to pick out others he knew were his clients. Those, too, he managed, for the most part anyway. After that, he went for trying to determine who was who from those he had heard about. Yes, this was complicated and they were ones he had to worry about if it ever came down to a fight, because this lot had no problem using the worst spells and curses out there. Already those fighting them were dropping at a good rate, either dead or badly injured.“This is no show,” he muttered to Yama as the group of Death Eaters made their way in his direction. “The town might not be their main focus, but they're going to take out as much as they can until they reach the castle. Not good.”When the bird hissed and clicked his beak several times, Hank nodded then told his companion, “They are ones to stay wary of, like so many in the States. They just don't give a shit what they do or if they're injured. Not good odds when you face those as they will pull out the absolute worst and blindside you.” Then he went back to focusing on the battle. When the battle drew close to the shop, Hank stood, Yama still on his shoulder, and stepped closer to the window to take a better look. Bodies from those on both sides were littering the wake of the mass of Death Eaters and they were still advancing. While some had fallen, either dead or wounded, they kept pressing on, still firing spells at anything that moved. Arms folded over his chest, Hank watched then his eyes drifted to those fighting them.As he watched, his eyes kept finding Sirius. Like he would expect, Sirius was in the thick of the battle, fighting it out with anyone close. Though it looked like he was cut up a bit by a few spells, he wasn't seriously injured. The tall man he had gone into the Three Broomsticks with was sticking close to him. Good. At least he had someone to help. However, as three people seemed to focus on the two, cutting them off from other help, Hank's brow furrowed. None of them had masks on and he was sure they were ones who were said to have escaped from Azkaban. His eyes kept drifting to the battle, but now Hank's main focus was on the three Death Eaters, Sirius and the tall man. He assumed the bloke was Remus, the friend Sirius talked about, but couldn't be sure. Eyes taking in the three after them, his brow furrowed. Though he couldn't place the faces of the men, people who looked like they were related in some way, he thought the name of the woman was Bellatrix, Sirius' cousin. “She's a right nasty piece of work, isn't she?” He observed, hearing Yama click his beak in agreement.Still watching, he stiffened up as another man joined them, one who didn't have a mask on either. This one he recognized; Fenrir Greyback. It seemed the werewolf was focused on Sirius' friend. As the four made sure to cut the two off from any help, though they probably wouldn’t get any anyway as everyone else was occupied with plenty, Hanks eyes narrowed. Though he vowed not to help either side, he couldn't just stand here and watch Sirius die. It was very apparent that was the goal, after torturing the two. No, it wasn't happening. He just had to go about this oddly so he wasn't drawn in or seen until the whole mess was over.A plan quickly forming, he stiffened up then said, “We're going to help Sirius. I need you to do what you do best and I'll slide in from the flanks. Between the two of us, we can blindside the arses and give Sirius a chance to take cover.”Unlike before, Yama didn't protest. Instead, he gave a determined hiss and waited to see what Hank had to say. After relaying what he had in mind, hearing Yama's agreement, he said, “Right. Go do what you do best and don't go for wounding. I'll slip in along the side. Between the two of us, they won't know what hit 'em.”Yama gave a loud hiss then his wings unfurled and he flew off towards the back of the store, changing as he did. After one more glance at what was going on, Hank then headed to his office to grab something he needed. He then planned to blindside some evil fools and take them down. Oh, he'd hide while he did it, but he knew the reward for Death Eaters. If he played this right, it would be a damned good payday and he could keep his name out of it. That he planned to do.
Sirius knew he and Remus were in trouble. When Bella, her husband and his brother cut them off, he figured this was bad news. Then Fenrir showed up to help. Very not good. While the two of them were holding their own, he realized if they didn't get help, they were dead. Of course, he sent off the signal everyone had to let the others know they were in trouble, but this was a full out battle, so the chances of getting help weren't good.
Remembering his training from so long ago, Sirius guided himself and Remus to a place where no one could sneak up on them then planned to give it all they had. If they were going to die, they were going to take as many as they could with them.As he was pulling out everything he knew and the nastiest spells he could think of to buy them time in case someone could get to them before they were done for, he was startled when an overly large crow came flapping over and landed on his shoulder. The bird was far heavier than it looked, something which made him wince when it landed. He was about to shoo the creature away as it was throwing off his balance when he remembered Yama changing shape the night of their last date. With a bit of a grin, he told Remus, “I think we have some help and more coming.” While he wasn't sure what all Yama could do, he figured he didn't show up for no reason.“Give them all you have, Yama,” he muttered, making sure he couldn't be overheard while he fired off spells. While he wasn't sure if Hank was around, he figured the man had sent the bird to help.“We need more than a bird, Sirius,” Remus told him, defending and shielding the best he could. He, too, realized this was probably their last stand unless someone could come help, so he was giving it all he could.“This isn't a normal bird,” Sirius told him, redoubling his efforts. He then muttered to Yama, “If you're going to do something, you need to start or we're all dead.” Eyes darting around, he tried to spot Hank, sure he was close by if Yama was here, but saw nothing.Yama gave a loud hiss then straddled Sirius' head, one foot on each of his shoulders. Focusing on one of the men without a mask, he let loose a chilling cry, something that tended to send shivers down human's spines, then opened his beak and cut loose, a lightning bolt emitting from it, striking the one man dead in the chest.Rabastan wasn't sure what the deal with the bird was, but would ignore the creature unless it made a move towards him. Wand pointed at Sirius, he aimed dead center for his chest and was about to let loose with the Killing Curse since Sirius was wide open when he was stuck with a bolt of lightning from the bird. In an instant, he felt like his whole body was on fire and could smell burning hair. Then he dropped. He was dead before he hit the ground.“Good one!” Sirius laughed, sending slicing hexes at Rodolphus as he looked at his brother.“That was rather a big help,” Remus chuckled, aiming all he had at Fenrir as he drew closer. Bella was an issue, casting spells at both of them, but Fenrir was closer, so he needed to tend to him fast. With as bad as the werewolf was, he wanted him out of the equation.“That sure as hell helped,” Sirius said with a nod, firing off spells as fast as he could. “Keep it up,” he then muttered to Yama. With another chilling cry, Yama stayed where he was, wings beating causing a distracting thunder sound. Focusing on the evil werewolf, he shifted to the shoulder of Sirius' non-dominant hand then opened his beak once more. Rather than lightning, this time sound waves undetectable by the human ear came out in a focused beam, the air rippling around them in circular waves. The beam struck Fenrir right in the chest and held him in place. Not sure what the bird was doing, though it stopped Fenrir dead in his tracks, Remus winced as every animal around, including some from as far away as the castle, began to howl at almost ear splitting levels. Though still firing away, his eyes widened as the air rippled from the bird to Fenrir, shimmering in circular waves which seemed to focus right dead center on Fenrir's chest. Within seconds, Fenrir appeared to almost melt, dropping into what looked like a pile of jelly on the ground, obviously dead. “Oh, that was good,” Remus chuckled. Two down. This meant they had a fighting chance of making it out alive, though Bella and Rodolphus weren't a cake walk.Sirius redoubled his efforts focusing on Bella while Remus took on Rodolphus. “I'm paying Molly to make you the best jerky you ever had when we get out of here,” he told Yama. “That and buying you the best, most expensive beer I can get my hands on.” And he planned to do something for Hank as well since he was damned sure he was the reason the bird was here. Now they could make it. It wouldn’t be easy, but they'd come out of this alive. And he planned to make sure the two knew they had been in a fight by the time they were done.
Invisibility Cloak on, the good one he won off a bloke in a poker game one night, and Disillusioned, Hank was able to slide up to the side of where Sirius was. Ducking behind the corner of a building close to the two trying to take them out, he readied his wand. Yama had taken out two of the quartet, so he just had to worry about the last of them. As he was good and hidden, he could manage.
When the man focused on Sirius, he leveled his wand at his back then grinned before casting a standard spell taught in lower years at school; a slicing charm used for Potions. Though this one was more powerful, it had the same effect; it sliced the man to ribbons, dropping pieces of him to the ground, obviously dead, before he knew what hit him. After her husband fell apart beside her, Bella was stunned. The spell hadn't been cast by either Sirius or Lupin. Though she kept most of her focus on the two in front of her, she gazed around quickly to see who might have cast the spell. She didn't see anyone. Since Sirius had fired a series of spells at her, she focused back on the two with an evil cackle, though boiling with rage, and kept glancing around. As she did, she began to back up. Though good, she was taking on two very good fighters and was now alone. She needed help to take them out. Since the main band of Death Eaters were advancing beyond where they were, she planned to grab a couple of the stragglers to help. She didn't manage.Hank paid close attention to what was going on. As the battle progressed beyond where they were, he knew he had his chance. Though Sirius and his friend, with Yama helping, could probably take the woman out, he wasn’t going to chance it. The two were probably exhausted by now and would need some help. With a bit of a grin, he leveled his wand at her then cast a tripping hex. When she stumbled, he sent a standard severing charm they were taught early on, taking her head off. When it dropped to the ground, her eyes open in astonishment, body crumbling, he stepped out and glanced around. The battle was beyond them now, other than some stragglers being taken on by others. Yeah, they were safe. Good. After ensuring they weren't in danger, he canceled the Disillusion spell once he made sure he was completely covered with the Invisibility Cloak. Seeing Sirius look in his direction, a stunned expression on his face, he lifted the cloak a little then winked at him, grinning, before dropping it back down. He would wait until everyone had moved on before removing it. Watching where he stepped, as there was plenty of nastiness all over the ground, he made his way towards Sirius and the yammering Yama. He'd keep an eye on the two for now. No, he wasn't going to help with the rest of the battle, but he'd stick with them as they obviously were winded and worn out. Then he'd go from there. Though he was going to make damned sure he received the reward for the four that he and Yama took out.
Sirius and Remus were both stunned when the two remaining Death Eaters died, not sure what happened. After a glance at each other, seeing the bewilderment there, they shook their heads.
When Yama began to do his normal hissing and clicking his beak, Sirius looked in the direction the bird seemed like he was gazing. Then he grinned when he saw Hank lower the hood on an Invisibility Cloak. Now he understood. Hank had set Yama to the task and was close by, like their own bizarre guardian of a sort. He rightly didn't give a damn since it saved them. Though he was curious as to the why behind it.Not only was Yama getting the best he could manage, Hank was being treated to a very good dinner with the best booze he could get his hands on, that's for damned sure.Nudging Remus, shaking a bit from the adrenaline rush, he said, “We had more than a bit of help, didn't we?”“And I'm grateful for every ounce of it,” Remus told him sincerely. He, too, was going to give the bird the best treat he could find. And, well, whoever else helped them. If the two hadn't stepped in, he was certain he and Sirius would be hugging James right about now.
About two hours later the battle was finally over. While there was plenty of damage, the Death Eaters hadn't taken the castle, what everyone was sure was the objective. There were casualties, of course, on both sides, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been if they hadn't received fair warning.
After the statements and general cleanup, Sirius and Remus were seated in Hank's office having a beer. Hank had talked to Kingsley about what happened for an official statement, but his name would be kept out of reports. Since rewards were awarded with a spell, he already had the money in his vaults for the four he and Yama took care of, something which made him happy. With a tired groan, Sirius leaned back in his chair and sipped his beer, finally starting to relax. There was still a ton to tend to and they would have a meeting later that night, but he needed to relax a bit since his nerves were on edge. After another sip, he looked at Hank, who was leaning back in his chair, feet on his desk, drinking his own bottle. He then asked the one question he had been thinking over since the battle started to calm. “Why didn't you leave?” He inquired, curious. Then he added, grinning, “Not that I'm complaining, mind you, as I'm sure you're the only reason the two of us are still here.“I wanted to observe so I knew what I was dealing with,” Hank told him honestly. “Had no intention of involving myself.”“We're mighty glad you changed your mind there,” Remus chuckled, smiling a tad. Though he wasn't sure what to make of Hank and was still very wary of the bird, he was relaxing. After all, Hank and Yama had probably saved his life, so he wasn't in danger.“It paid well,” Hank chuckled, smirking a tad.“That it did,” Sirius laughed, crossing his legs. Then he asked, sobering up again, “Why, though? I mean, you haven't taken sides in this.”Hank sighed then thought over how to word what he was going to say. Finally, he admitted, “I couldn't just stand there and watch you die. It was coming, from what I could tell. Had a way to go about it so I wasn't pulled in and took it.”“Glad you did because that was the last stand there if someone didn't come help.” Sirius admitted with a shake of his head. “And, with what we know now? No one was going to as they were tied up and fighting their own battles.”“Which means you owe me big,” Hank told him with a snort, smirking again.“And a price I will gladly pay,” Sirius told him honestly. Then he began asking what all Hank had seen for future reference and to help them.As he walked the two through all he saw while the battle raged, Hank realized he had chosen a side in the whole mess. It was startling to think he had, but it was true. He hadn't chosen either side of the war, though. The side he had chosen was Sirius. Not to join the cause or help with the war effort, just Sirius. The pull was there and he would stand by the man, protecting him while Sirius fought. Yeah, Hank had chosen a side for the first time in his life and he was quite happy with it.With an inner smile, sipping his beer, he answered their questions about what he saw, while his eyes kept being drawn to Sirius. This felt better than anything in his past, even the big payouts he received from some bits. While it was strange, not something he was used to, he would go with it and adore the feeling.
