“I must say, your landing is much more graceful than Harry’s”
Hermione dusted herself off and looked at Malfoy.
“Oh, thank you.”
Draco held out his arm.
“Dinner is this way. I know how you feel about house elves so I offered to show you the way instead of having mother send an elf. Oh, and thank you for being semi-formal. Mother will appreciate the effort.”
“You’re welcome. When Harry told me you two were starting over I found every book on Wizard etiquette I could find.”
“And where would you find those books in the muggle world?”
“I’m staying with the Weasley’s, they had some.”
Draco showed Hermione to her seat and then sat down himself.
“Glad you could make it Hermione! What did you tell Molly to get away?” Harry asked as he took his seat.
“I told her I was going on a date with the wizard from the book store.” Hermione and Harry chuckled as the Malfoy’s looked confused.
“Ron has been getting angrier and angrier since the end of school. He was questioning my every move tonight and I’m afraid of what he will do once your interview comes out.”
“We will deal with that once it happens. The Malfoy’s are aware of everything, including Sirius.”
Hermione was slightly surprised at that. Harry was being very open with them.
“Are you being just as open with Harry as he clearly is with you?” She asked as several elves walked in to serve dinner.
“Yes, we have been very open. I told him of all my past sins from the last war and what role I truly played in it.” Lucius stated. He watched her frown before politely thanking the elf that served her.
“May I ask, what do you have against house elves?” Narcissa asked as the smiled down at her elf.
“The treatment they go through is deplorable! No real clothing to protect them, beaten, I saw what you did to Dobby. Plus, they work like slaves!” Hermione fought to keep her anger in check.
“Do they seem unhappy to you?” Narcissa asked.
“Do they look abused or mistreated? Dobby, poor dear, was misinformed and most of his injuries were self caused. Some feel they need to be punished if they see themselves as being disloyal to their family. Lucius was giving him what he wanted.”
“I cannot believe for even one second that any creature would do that to themselves.”
“Why not? Humans do.”
Hermione was stunned. Humans did? She sat and thought as they ate thinking over everything. Comparing what she was just told to human behavior. They were right. In some form or fashion humans are just like the elves when it comes to their emotions. The only difference was humans beat themselves up mentally and emotionally where the elves did it physically.
“And she gets it.” Draco chuckled.
The group finished their dinner talking about light hearted subjects.
“When is your interview coming out?” Hermione asked as dessert was served.
Harry couldn’t help but chuckle.
“In the morning. I signed off on it today.”
“You know this is going to push Ron way over the edge and possibly make an enemy out of Dumbledore, right?”
“I expect it too. This will weed out who are in his pocket, who is on my side, and who is on Voldemort’s. I know I may lose several friends, but I hope to gain some as well.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, if I’m correct, many of the kids whose parents support Voldemort, don’t want to follow in their parent’s footsteps. There are some who do, but most I feel are like Draco and only doing so to survive.”
“That’s a good place to start. Offer protection from those who wish to use them. Draco could back your story and provide a barrier for the more skeptical.”
The three teens launched themselves into plans on how they could protect people. Harry mentioned they could use his properties as safe houses.
“That would be most acceptable. The wards would be keyed to only you and a master list linked to accepted persons’ magical signatures.” Lucius commented, interrupting the teens.
“If your manors are anything like this one, you could house several hundred people between Potter and Evans manor. Those who need protecting the most, young children and the parents of muggleborns, would have a place to go where they could see their children.”
Hermione was writing notes as fast as she could. Plans for how to house so many people, wards to be used, who would run them.
“If Molly comes to your side do you think she would run one of the manors? We should make one a family haven and the other should be more for those who are going to fight.” Hermione stated as she finished her notes.
“Evans manor should be for the families. It is unknown to almost everyone, I didn’t even mention it in my interview.” Harry replied, a smile forming.
The teens, with comments from Lord and Lady Malfoy, worked out plans for how the two manors should be laid out, how many elves they should employ, what tests they should use to ensure the safety of those living there, and so on. They didn’t even realize how late it was until Pig flew at them, a howler in his beak.
“Crap! I bet that is from Molly.” Hermione said, wincing as she opened it up.
“WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU! I SWEAR TO MERLIN HERMIONE IF YOU DON’T COME BACK RIGHT NOW WE ARE DONE! I’LL DO YOU LIKE I DID HARRY AND THIS FRIENDSHIP WILL BE OVER!”
With that the howler burst into flames.
“I knew it! He was using us and when we no long fit into his little box he turned on us!” Harry said, anger filling his voice.
He hugged Hermione as she tried to fight back the tears.
“Don’t worry. He will get his tomorrow when we go see them.” Harry said, a plan for how he would deal with the ginger idiot starting to form.
Sorry for the delay. My littlest is sick with bronchitis so I have to wait till he is asleep to write for the next couple of days. To answer the question about why some of the chapters stretch outside the boarders, I have no idea why they do that. I noticed it on other stories I read while on my iPhone, but not so much on my computer. If I knew how to fix it I would because that is really annoying.
