~~~December~~~
The month was freezing but Hermione was happy that have been home for as long as she had been. After spending so much time in the hot Amazonian Rain forest the first snowfall had been a real shock, everyone claims that you never fully forget winter or snow but that was all a lie. The snowflakes were more beautiful, the ice was far more freezing, the grounds were slipperier than she'd remembered and more than once already so early in the winter, Narcissa had to heal her backside and knees. Harry had been fixing up Grimmauld Place with Gabrielle, he wouldn't say it but Hermione and Draco were pretty sure that they were dating. With no parents around anymore and no one else that she wanted to stay with long term, Hermione had gone back to Malfoy Manor and the bedroom that she had previously loved. She was working in the library at the Ministry studying different magical places and spells that may have worked in or around Tir Na Nog.
“Hermione” Draco called her in to his private study that was just off of the library, a present that his father had gifted him with when he got his job at the Ministry “Can I talk with you?”
“Of course” She answered as she walked in and sat down in a chair near the fireplace and he sat down across from her watching her for a few minutes “What is it?”
“Mr. Norrington contacted me” He said “He asked how we were getting along and if I thought, from my personal experience, if we would be ready to move up in to a different field its' a new one and we would have to...” He trailed off when an owl flew in and dropped a letter on to her lap “Looks like you'll know soon enough” Hermione watched him as she carefully lifted the top of the envelope and pulled out the letter.
Dear Hermione,
I hope that you are enjoying your holiday out of the field, it has been nice seeing you on a daily basis at the ministry. I intend to let you have the holiday season with your friends and family but come January I will have a new mission that will call for a whole new field group.
We are putting together a new group with three men and three women. All married couples of course that don't want to have children right off the bat, I would like you to become a member of this group. I was told that it wouldn't be so out of the question for you and Draco to have a marriage of convenience for whatever reason or another. From what my source tells me Draco's family is pushing him to marry someone to make the name 'Malfoy' great again and you will eventually need some kind of help financially because, well let's be honest this department doesn't pay the best and you've already nearly run out of your hero-pension. Would it be such a bad idea? This position means an increase in pay, longer missions with more people and more fame to your names once these missions are done and over with. These will be the cases and discoveries that will be taught to future young witches and wizards, that will make sure that you're written about in the history books. I have everyone that I need other than you and Draco but I made it a rule that only married couples could join this team. I have people running out and going on speed-dating trips as we speak in hopes of getting your position, please Hermione think about this.
Think it over,
Norrington.
“Married?” Hermione repeated as if that was the only thing she'd noticed in the whole letter “Married?”
“Yeah” Draco said a little uncomfortably “Married” He offered a small laugh “Us...crazy, right?”
“What 'others' did he need?” She wondered aloud as she reread the letter.
“He needed a Potions Expert and a Dark Arts expert” Draco answered “He said he got that wrapped all in one. Then he needed a Magical Creatures Expert, Two seasoned searchers, Runes Expert and a witch/wizard who has at least 25% Magical Creature DNA in their blood”
“That would be you” Hermione guessed.
“No” Draco said with a small shake of his head “I only have 23% of the Veela DNA” He shrugged “I would be the Runes Expert”
“Then who...?” Hermione started then nodded a little to herself “Gabrielle”
“Exactly” He answered “She and Harry will be two of them I would think Luna Lovegood as the magical creatures expert but I don't know who the other person would be”
“I'm not sure” Hermione bit her lip and then looked at him “But we can't get married!”
“Why not?” He asked her, standing from his seat he walked around the room once before kneeling down in front of her watching as she instantly looked nervous “Hermione...”
“Stop it!” She said quickly as she looked around for an exit that she may be able to get to quickly.
“Hermione” He said again “Hermione...listen to me” He put his hands gently on her cheeks and lightly forced her to focus on his face again “I know I promised that I wouldn't say it but I can't lie anymore, I love you Hermione Granger. I have been in love with you since we were fourteen years old and I saw you walk in to the Great Hall with Viktor Krum and he looked so proud to have you on his arm” A tear rolled down her cheek and she shook her head, not wanting to hear what he had to say and yet wanting to at the same time “I felt such a strong envy that night I didn't even know what the feeling truly was until then. You were so beautiful, so smart and there was always a light that came from you, right from your very soul and if one was lucky enough they got to have that light shed upon them”
“Draco” She whispered but he shook his head to her.
“I know how Merope Gaunt must have felt” Draco said, causing her to close her mouth with a snap “Loving someone so much that you would do the craziest thing you could think of...she chose a love potion and I chose to ignore the way I had been raised for years and I would do it a million more times if I had to” He ran his thumb over her lips “Severus may have been insane but his love for Lily is admirable, as you've said before Love has made terrible things happen but its made amazing things happen too and if you want to see our marriage as one of convenience than go ahead but I see it as my being married to the woman I have loved for the better part of my life” He let go of her hand and reached in to his pocket and pulled out a ring box, he opened it and looked back at the woman he loved more than life itself “Will you marry me, Hermione?”
Luna sat on the couch in Severus's private sitting room twisting her fingers together. She wasn't usually so nervous but she knew that Severus didn't like surprises and what she needed to tell him was the second most unexpected (hopefully not unwanted) surprise of all. But Luna also knew that there was still a spark of life and adventure within him that lived and she knew that if he could get over his anger that they could have loads of fun together on the adventures that the ministry set before them. When his office door swung open her smile widened and then faltered a little when she saw how irritated he looked. She could put it on hold yet again but the ministry told her that everyone other than Hermione and Draco were already on board and they needed her answer as soon as possible or they would have to look for someone else.
“Those stupid little pieces of shits” He muttered “Little morons 'oh I didn't know that mixing dragon fire and unicorn saliva would cause an explosion' fucking idiots...of course it explodes!”
“Severus” Luna said, squeezing her hands together nervously “I got offered a job from the ministry”
“That's good” He answered distractedly “What is it?”
“Going on adventures” She said “Just like Harry and Hermione. However, they are making it a big group of married couples...”
“Are you getting married?” He asked, raising his eyes a little jealously.
“Actually” Luna said nervously “I'm already married...”
“Well, my dear” Severus said as he walked over to her, his eyes were locked on her and guarded but his entire being was flirty “Then you should probably stop joining me in my shower every night...don't you think?”
“Well...that's the thing...” Luna said “In Tir Na Nog...where my ancestors are from my soul has recognized yours as my forever partner or 'mate' if you want to get technical, just like Draco's has recognized Hermione's soul” He nodded “In Tir Na Nog and in the Fair Ones traditions...we are...” She looked around as if the word would be waiting for her somewhere around there “Married” She said faintly.
“Married” Severus repeated as he sat down on the top of his desk “Married” He said it again nodding his head a little looking rather impressed at something “I'm married” He offered a half-insane chuckled, Luna gave a small smile hopeful that he was taking it better than she could have hoped “Bloody fucking hell, Luna!”
“I...what...I...” She couldn't think of anything helpful to say and in her upset she could feel the threat of tears.
“I told you...I told you that I never wanted to be married!” He looked betrayed and Luna started to hyperventilate “I told you that after Lily, I couldn't...I just...couldn't ever see myself marrying anyone and you went behind my back and you never told me”
“I didn't do this to you” Luna whimpered, she had promised herself back in her third year that she would never cry in Hogwarts again no matter what happened “It's how the magical world works...”
“DON'T TALK TO ME LIKE I'M A CHILD!” He roared which caused her to jump back so quickly she fell out of the chair and smashed her elbow against the bookcase corner “I have been in this world years longer than you have!”
“I'm sorry” Luna whispered, she was dazed by the throbbing pain in her elbow and as she turned her head she saw blood oozing on to the ground from the cut she'd gotten from the bookcase “I shouldn't have told...you” She was feeling dizzy as she pushed herself to her feet and stumbled towards the door that led to the hallway, she was apparently losing a lot of blood.
“No, maybe you shouldn't have!” Severus growled at her as she tripped over her feet “You should stay gone for a while I don't want to see you for a while, okay?”
Luna was pretty sure she said yes as she stumbled out in to the hallway and pulled his office door shut. She used as much of her strength as she could ripping her sleeve above her elbow and looked at the huge gash and the river of blood that was flowing down her arm. She found it almost too difficult to lift her wand up and tap the skin with the tip as she leaned heavily on the wall, when she was able to do it nothing happened because she had no strength to pull on her magic. Luna focused all of her concentration on moving her feet to the bottom of the stairs leading to the main hallway. Each step was agony and seemed to take longer than intended but to any onlookers, not that there were any as everyone was in their dorms and offices as dinner was over, she was merely unsteady but moving at a reasonable pace. Her hearing was starting to get warped and her vision was clouded, she knew that she was never going to make it to the infirmary and she didn't want some first year to find her dead body. Luna moved herself in to an alcove hidden just inside of the front hall and sat down on the stone bench just inside. Closing her eyes.
Severus had just thrown his last book across the room and muttered about the unfairness of not having any say in what happened in his life. He leaned over and picked up his desk chair and then his eyes were dragged over to the puddle of bright red blood that covered the stone floor. There was a huge amount and he knew it wasn't from him and then in front of his eyes he saw Luna's terrified face when he'd yelled and how she'd fallen out of the chair. He remembered the look of pain that crossed her beautiful features and how she'd been leaning heavily on the wall as she walked out. If she was losing this much blood...Severus jumped to his feet and threw the door open, he looked down one side of the hallway and then down the other side but he saw nothing. As he was walking towards the stairs he saw a small puddle of blood then some drops leading up the stairs, however when he got to the landing he didn't see anymore. Thinking like Luna he could only assume that she was heading towards the infirmary so he took off at a jog down that hallway and right past the alcove that she was actually laying in. Severus burst through the doors leading in to the infirmary and Madame Pomphrey came bustling out of her office looking worried.
“What is it, Severus?” She asked, looking around as if she was searching for death eaters of something of that caliber “What's wrong?”
“Where's Luna Lovegood?” Severus asked, looking from bed to bed.
“I don't know” She shrugged “I assumed she was with you like she always is”
“No” He answered “We had a fight and I startled her and she fell and she's losing a lot of blood...too much blood”
“Oh Merlin” Madame Pomphrey said as she grabbed her wand “Check all the classrooms and the hallways, was she disoriented when she left your office?”
“Yes” He said “I think...I was in a rage and wasn't paying attention so...she was hanging on to the wall and sounded weak”
“That's not good” She muttered to herself “I'll send a Patronis to Minerva”
“This will all take too long” He snarled as he ran towards the Floo Network he ran in threw the powder down and snapped out 'Number 12 Grimmauld Place' before disappearing with the green flames.
Luna kept her eyes shut and just listened to the sound of the old lullaby her mother used to sing to her when she was little and laying down for a nap. She hadn't heard it in years, vaguely she thought she heard someone run by the alcove but she didn't have enough strength to call out to them. Luna opened her eyes, afraid that when she did she wouldn't be able to hear the beloved lullaby but it was so much better. She saw her mother sitting there on the floor singing the song she had always loved as a child. Pandora Lovegood's smile was just as bright as Luna remembered, her mothers eyes were so alike her daughters and they were sparkling with love. When Luna's eyes focused on her better her smile became nearly blinding and her hand came up and she stroked one long fingernail down Luna's small, upturned nose like she had when she was little.
“Mama” Luna whispered.
“Shh” Pandora spoke “My beautiful girl, look at you all grown up and your soul has recognized another...he is quite a man”
“Mama...I don't know what to do anymore” Luna whispered to her “Tell me what to do”
“Just love him” Her mother said with a watery smile “Your father was broken and difficult when I met him but with love and tenderness he came around and your man will as well”
“Will I get a chance to?” Luna whispered with a small sob and Pandora turned her head away with a sob of her own “Am I dying?”
“Yes” Her mother answered with a small nod “But I'm here for you and I won't leave you until your hand is in mine” Luna didn't say anything just laid her head back down and kept her eyes locked on her mothers stare just watching her and feeling the pulse in her arm become less and less.
