Rescuing.
In Wiltshire, Lucius spent much of his time in a daze, thinking very deeply about his encounters with Hermione. But upon learning he was back, Tallot came to look for him the afternoon after he returned.
Tallot, who had always carried a carefree expression on his face was wearing a solemn look today. He headed directly to Lucius’s bedchamber, where he was dressing after bathing. He knew that the other man was here, and acted as usual.
Lucius arranged a game of chess, but there wasn't a single piece. He had been holding one in his hand for some time without placing it down. Upon a closer look, he didn't seem to be thinking of the game, he seemed more like his mind had left him.
Lucius woke from his stupor upon seeing him and and motioned him to sit. Tallot went to the most comfortable looking chair and cut to the chase: “The golden apple of the Kintree clan can bring back the flesh and bones of a dead mortal this year reportedly; of course this is not true but others have been spreading this as if were fact. Have you heard of this?”
Lucius absentmindedly replied, “I have, why?”
Tallot furrowed his brow. “I heard Hermione Granger feels responsible for the death of that Weasley girl. I heard this all from Maggie Knight, who just so happens to be a close friend of that squib Arabella Figg. I thought it odd that Mrs. Figg would know this, and even stranger that this nonsense was the fruit was happening. I went to visit her, and apparently she can’t hold her alcohol. After only a few bottles, she told me even the things I didn't ask. It has to do with you.”
Lucius stared at the empty board and murmured, ‘It’s normal for Hermione’s business to be connected to me.’ He then indicated for Tallot to go on.
He hesitated before continuing. “According to Figg, something unbelievable happened. Nearly two decades ago, she met Hermione. She found her in great distress because she was tossed through time.’ He paused, ‘I thought that this was utterly unbelievable, but then I thought about it, it is too strange of a lie to make up.’ Tallot paused, ‘I know that you once discovered that your memories were altered by Narcissa, and that was why you two are in conflict. You still are investigating this crime because the spell is complicated, and you can only remember things if people connected to the memory tell you.’ He paused, ‘It seems that Hermione and you have a very big connection.’
Tallot poured tea, took a sip, and went on. “I heard you saved her life once when she was young. Thereafter, she could not forget you. But for some reason, you never paid any attention to her. Narcissa told her you two were engaged, and so she used an Unspeakable to finally manage to sleep her way to the present. But things were different, and Hermione never told Figg how things were different from that original timeline she came from.’
Lucius was stunned, frozen, suffering multiple shocks as Tallot told him all of this.
‘She tried to get near you again, hoping she could move your heart. But afterward, you intended to marry Madeline...” At this point, he glanced to Lucius who was enduring emotional shocks and hesitatingly continued, “I don’t know what happened, but she apparently decided to finally give up. I asked if had to do with your age difference, but Figgy tearfully said that Hermione believes that no matter what, it’s impossible for you to love her. But you didn't care at all, didn't go to look for her, thus she was heartbroken”
Then he added, “I mulled over these things and could guess you were not aware of any of them. Your relationship always seemed to be one of conflict; I know you pretty well and even I thought that maybe she was just someone you were toying with. If that’s what I think, then she must…’ He trailed off.
Lucius held his head in his hands. Unused to seeing him appear so weak, he looked at him in surprise and asked, “What's wrong?”
Lucius sounded extremely tired. “You're right. She must still hate me. I'm thinking about what to do.”
Tallot hated to bear more bad news, “….listening to the rumors that have been drifting out of the Whitewood, I learned that Hermione was devastated to find out that the item she labored to get was given to Madeline. No matter how I look at it, she must think you love her..... You should go see her, I'm afraid something will go wrong.”
The hand that was rubbing his temple stopped as he gazed up in puzzlement: “Hermione looked unwell?’
Tallot shrugged, ‘I only heard rumors.”
He hadn't finished when they heard noises outside. They had only gotten on their feet when the bedroom's door was pushed down in a loud crash. Charles Martel was standing at the entrance, mad with rage. “How despicable! Hermione is trapped inside the serpent formation with her life on the line and you two are still sitting here playing chess and drinking tea?!’
Tallot momentarily didn't understand what was happening and froze from the shock of being berated. Lucius understood immediately, but he ignored Martel’s condemnation, furrowed his brow, and quietly asked, “What happened to her?”
“You dare ask me what happened to her? Even though I like Madeline, I still don't like how you gave her what was originally Hermione’s. It's not that you didn't know Hermione needed the fruit. Because you gave it to Madeline, she had no other way but to sneak to the Blood Spring and steal it before it was picked. How can her magic withstand the four pythons protecting the fruit? She's now trapped inside the serpent formation with her life on the line. I, the prince, and even Her Majesty the Queen don't know what to do...”
In the middle of his speech, a gust of wind suddenly whirled past him. He turned to ask Tallot, “Where did Ice Face go?”
His facial expression gloomy. “Rescuing.” Then he added, “I knew something was going to happen.”
Meanwhile…
The four pillars had collapsed. There was no traces of the clear blue stream. The only thing remained unscathed in the vicinity of the pillars was the tree. The sun had risen high outside, but within the force field, it was still pitch black. The four pythons awaited in the four corners in guard, their towering eyes as red as burning lanterns. They were safeguarding a force field foggy with dense blue smoke. Within it was a young woman floating in the air with her eyes closed. Her long brown hair floated about her. It was uncertain whether she was in a coma or fast asleep.
Outside the crumbled pillars, fierce gale hissed in bouts. Lucius was temporarily frozen as he collectedly looked at Hermione being trapped inside the force field. Despite her pale face, her chest was still heaving. How fortunate. He sighed in relief, his expression unchanged. In reality, he knew she was very beautiful, but because she always seemed to be upset, or serious, people's attention was often drawn to her personality, and if not, her reputation. At this time when she lay still inside the force field, her elegant features were more pronounced.
He had seen his share of beautiful women. Hermione wasn't necessarily the most beautiful, but fate was funny that way. All the beauties, no matter how alluring, were never able to leave an impression on him. Only her, whether her smile, whether her frown, whether her embarrassment, even when she made a face at him, he remembered it all.
Each image was crystal clear in his mind. Tallot said she was someone he knew in the past. It was good if she was. But if she wasn't, it made no difference to him. He only knew that he loved her, and past, present, future whatever timelines said in the past, he loved only her.
He lowered his gaze, his eyes pausing on the Queen and her prostrated subjects. He coldly spoke, “What exactly is that force field?”
The prince, who was Hermione’s friend, was extremely worried over her imprisonment finally clasped his hands together in response: “It’s not a force field that is trapping her. It's Aranya’s Dream.”
When the word 'Aranya' left the prince’s mouth everyone trembled visibly.
The prince retold the tale, and it goes as follow. In ancient lore, Aranya was an unrivaled beauty. She died a grievous death and never did reincarnate nor did she cross over to heaven. Her soul turned into a dream maze and drifted in the Whispering Whitewood. Anyone who fell into her dream would fall into Aranya's sentiments while she was still alive. Those who weren't strong enough would never be able to escape. They'd stay instead in an eternal sleep until their life force was completely drained by the dream and they themselves turned into mere smoke.
When Hermione got lost inside the serpent formation, she must've entered the Aranya Dream at the same time it drifted by. Aranya was nurtured by the four pythons in these pillars since she was young. They must have thought she was Aranya and thus determinedly fought to protect her by keeping outsiders from intruding.
Besides the lost person coming out himself, there was a safer way to solve Aranya's Dream: the person closest to him could enter the dream to bring him back. But in the current situation, one must first pass the serpent formation in order to enter the dream and bring her out. It wasn't difficult to battle the four pythons, but Aranya's Dream was merelya shifting image. It only manifested into concrete reality when someone entered inside. This reality took form in a pale blue force field. The dream's rendered world was unusually fragile. Fighting ground was inevitably turbulent. If the dream was inadvertently broken, Hermione could end up gravely injured or even dead. They also considered the option of sending someone with high power to fight the beasts while keeping the dream intact to bring the princess out. But Aranya's Dream was sensitive to strong individuals. Anyone who entered this dream could not use offensive magic. Otherwise, the dream could break.
But how could anyone challenge these pythons? The scenario at hand was indeed a dilemma; no one knew what to do. From last night’s discovery of her imprisonment until now, no one dared to act rashly all for this reason. Hermione’s prospects seemed more grim than good.
Lucius made his decusion. He softly said, “This is the only way.” Lucius entered the python’s nest without even thinking of the consequences.
Two people dared trespass the pythons' territory within two days making the serpents livid with fury. Their hisses were like demonic wails. Blade- sharp lightning bolts directed at Donghua. Without his magic to protect him, Lucius’s body was instantly slashed. The seeping blood.
To avoid agitating the pythons and disturbing the dream in which she was sleeping, Lucius maintained an appropriately slow pace. Inside the formation, things were unstable and inconsistent with reality. It began to rain, and soon he was soaked, the water drenching him and causing his blood to drain into the ground.
Meanwhile, Herminone wanted to leave this place, but each time she roused from her trance, she felt her consciousness drifting farther away in lethargy. Her eyes were blurry, her limbs immobile. Moreover, each time she opened her eyes, waiting for her were but the silent darkness and throbbing pain.
But this time appeared to be slightly different. Thunder and rain grew more audible, as if they were striking by her ears. Someone's hand was touching her head - it felt cold - and moved down to her cheek, then it tucked away the stray hair behind her ears. Hermioine lifted her eyes and saw a silver-maned man in black looking down at her.
At this time, in this place, if she was awake she'd be greatly surprised to see Lucius. But her mind was clouded right now. When was it, where was it, she hadn't a clue. Was she a young Hermione or a grown Hermione, she had no idea either. But she seemed to know this person. Wasn't he Lucius?
Then hazily, she recognized he was someone she had really liked. How wonderful it was that he came to look for her! Yet she asked him a question contrary to her feelings: “What are you doing here?” Lucius looked at her with his placid eyes but he did not answer. Her sight gradually cleared and she saw that his entire body was drenched.
“You must be cold?” she uttered in surprise.
Again, he did not reply her. He only looked at her silently then pulled her into his arms. At length he asked, “Are you very frightened?”
Hermione was momentarily confused; her limbs felt awkward, and she was unsure of where to place them. He asked whether she was frightened.
Yes, she was very frightened. She nodded honestly. He smoothed back her disarray hair and comforted her in a low voice, “Don't be afraid. I'm here now.”
Tears unexpectedly gushed out. Her mind was a blank, but she could feel pain surging in her heart. Her limbs seemed to have been able to move, she ventured her hand to touch his back and choked back her tears: “I thought I should wait for you. I was actually sure you wouldn't come, but then you did. You don't know how happy I am.” She heard him whispered back, “I came for you.”
She hazily perceived that he was being very gentle today, how wonderful, so different from the usual Lucius. But how was the usual Lucius like, in this moment she couldn't remember either. Her mind weighed heavily as her awareness started to cloud. She caught his last words and said, “You're here, but I know you'll leave again. I remember I always seem to watch your back. But I'm very sleepy today, I...”
She sensed herself mumbling on, but her head was drowning further and further into confusion and fogginess. The embrace around her tightened, and before she slumped deeper into her sleep, she faintly heard one last thing from him. he whispered to her, “I won't leave this time. Sleep, When you wake, we'll be home.”
Appeased, she once again slipped back into unawareness. By her ears remained the obscure sounds of striking thunder and hissing serpents, but her mind was calm, so utterly calm without fear nor fright. All pain dissolved away when she was in Lucius’s arms.
