MIRACLES
~~~ SUNDAY 12TH EVENING ~~~
No grand, if dusty car, this. They could hear the leaky exhaust of the motorbike as it rode up the gravel track. Its rider was in clerical black, but most of it appeared to be made of leather. There was a battered suitcase riding pillion, two bulging panniers and the rider also had an overlarge backpack.
The parish priest waited with the seers and the village elders in front of the church to see what kind of cleric they were going to have foisted upon them. Once the helmet was removed Harry thought of a dark bearded slightly smaller version of Hagrid. Even so, this cleric was over six feet high and broad of shoulder.
“I am Father Estéban, Reverend Father.” The leather apparition knelt and kissed Heironimo’s ring of office. “I come to plead forgiveness and serve penance for my disobedience to Holy Mother Church.”
Heironimo took the young man’s elbows and lifted him up: “Your penance is between you, your confessor and God. I will not have a brother cleric grovelling in the dirt in front of me. Now give me the kiss of peace, which is the proper way for us to greet each other.”
Wearing his new amulet; as well as being able to understand all that was said, Harry noticed tears in both priests’ eyes as they hugged. Harry was next, ensuring that Estéban did not grovel: “Stand up straight man; you are no longer in the seminary. Come and meet the other Hidalgos,” he whispered. Harry patted Estéban on the shoulder and the young priest winced.
The other Seers realised the purport of what happened. The next message came from Draco, as Estéban waved his shocked hand around in surprise. The Seers grabbed hands with their counterpart cleric letting him know silently that he had the capability of becoming an exorcist.
D:*I think we misjudged Monsignor Ricardo and forgot to read between the lines.*
H:*He’s been badly beaten.*
R:*Probably deliberately trying to force the Devil out of him. Some of those seminary brothers are extremely sadistic.*
G:*Do you mean he has the tingle?*
R:*Not sure what that is, Ginny; but I bet the Spirit has led him into conflict with the hierarchy.*
H:*The tingle is the recognition of magical powers, Ronnie. So … Let’s get all his surprises over in one go, shall we?*
F:*Do get on with it, my children. Take him inside and treat his back before he bleeds to death.*
R:*Who’s that sending?*
D:*Our birdie conscience called Fawkes,* was Draco’s laconic reply. *You’ve met him before, he’s the phoenix but he’s in the disguise of an old crow on that rooftop over there. I’m going with Imelda to collect the salves we made earlier. My little voice said we’d need them.*
By this time Estéban had shaken nearly every villagers’ hand and was visibly wilting. His brother cleric supported him into the house.
“Come into the kitchen, Estéban, immediately. We need to stop the bleeding.”
“How did you know, it’s not dripping is it.”
“You’re joining a very strange household, Estéban,” Astoria informed him: “We all know about your beating, not from the authorities, but because we have been subjected to a revelation. Draco and Imelda have gone to get the salves.”
“The scabs will have congealed into my clothing. That pack was there to stop them re-opening as I drove.”
“Okay, lie face down on the table and we’ll carefully peel off the layers until we see the scabs, then we’ll wait for the medics.”
Two layers came off before they could see and smell the extent of his injuries.
“I’m going to get Poppy,” said Ginevra: “Those wounds are festering.” She ran out onto the private back balcony to apparate; whilst the undressers revealed bloody buttocks and thighs as well as his back. Within quarter of an hour Poppy arrived and, at the same time Imelda returned with Draco.
Poppy looked at the mess that was Estéban’s back and then chose potions from the baskets the two mages held.
“You have a good stock, Imelda. That and some healing charms will have him right in no time. I suggest, brothers and sisters, that you leave Estéban in Imelda’s and my care.”
Five very pale people walked out of the kitchen. Heironimo went straight to the church to pray for his new found brother-in-Christ and the rest of the seers joined him.
~~~ DINNER ~~~
They did not feel like dinner when Luiz called them in, but went along dutifully to the dining room. Three people sat there waiting for them. Estéban rose, smiling all over his freshly washed face and combed whiskers.
“I think I’ve been the receiver of a miracle, care of these two lovely ladies.” He took off his freshly laundered shirt and turned around: “Look, it’s all gone, blood and scars together and it doesn’t even hurt.”
Harry looked a whole fresh pink skin and marvelled at Poppy’s skill.
“The wounds were only skin deep but had not been cleaned properly for days. We just caught them in time before any damaging infection took hold,” she explained.
“Whatever madam says, I still think it’s a miracle. And I owe her a life-debt.”
There was a sizzling sound as the debt was registered on Poppy’s person.
“Oh dear! Father Estéban, you don’t know what you have just promised. You and I are bound together by it.” Poppy sighed then she smiled at him: “Well Estéban, rest easy, I think I shall die of natural causes before all the life debts in front of yours are called in. Harry, you’d better explain.”
“Yes Poppy. We were going to anyway, as long as you think he’s strong enough.”
“He is that!” she replied forcibly.
Over dinner the Seers went into great detail about their parallel world. Not only did Estéban learn things new, but his fellow cleric gained a deeper understanding too. Even Imelda had questions. The elves were introduced and promptly went to unpack Estéban’s possessions; washing and repairing them at the same time. Then the Seers felt they should return to Godric’s hollow, promising that someone magical would look in on a weekly basis and earmarking weekends as most suitable. They also agreed that that someone would represent the Hidalgo in his pew each Sunday.
~~~ SATURDAY AFTERNOON 18TH SEPTEMBER – CHANTRY COTTAGE ~~~
A weekend later Grandmamma wandered in through the portal.
“I thought I’d better see where my new grandchildren live, now I am properly related to you all.”
Astoria showed her around; afterwards they sat on the patio drinking tea and eating Winky’s special fruit cake.
“Your cottage is not as big as I imagined it to be, Harry. However, the estate that surrounds it is much bigger than I envisaged. Your house is very well furnished, and the loving atmosphere makes up for any lack of space. I’m growing older and, with my husband gone, I rattle around in the Grunrasenhof like a very small pea on an enormous drum. Quite honestly, it’s too much for me to look after any longer. Because of my husband’s peculiar will the Grunrasenhof would have become Daphne’s but now will become Astoria’s when I die. I wonder if your joint estate could start looking after my house in the meantime. After all, my Hauptdiener has already integrated my elves into your team.”
The Seers had a silent commune and came up with a positive answer. Astoria was deputised to help with the cultural activities which the Duchess had hoped would be able to continue. The seers offering Grandmamma the use of various other Blake Estate properties, as she wished. In return, after a brief directors meeting, it was agreed that the palast should become part of the Blake Trust and Francis was to sort out the international legalities. They then went to attend Hermione’s 25th birthday dinner taking Grandmamma with them.
~~~ SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER ~~~
The following weekend the Seers slipped quietly away to the Tabernacle before visiting the Pueblo de Alfareros. They spent a secluded Saturday there, although to them it felt like six days. Having checked that the Dacha was clear of malcontents, they decontaminated it and set up temporary wards to exclude Lucius and his gang. Most of the time was spent enhancing the parseltongue lexicon that they had promised Charlie and Paulus. Ivanova’s computer work had the finished book looking very professional.
###
On hearing about the hacienda, George and Ronald promised that they would have another pair of cabinets ready and placed, with the pair they had already made, in the thaum-free cellar at Number Twelve, by the end of October. They also reminded the Seers about Blaise’s twenty-fifth birthday do, which was to take place in Venice at the Palazzo. Thus Blaise’s cousins from the Florence connection would also be able to attend.
~~~ WEEKEND OF 31ST OCTOBER ~~~
Saturday had started the half term, Draco and Harry had booked the Monday off work and arranged for Michael and Tracey to have the previous Friday – Thus each of the Eagles’ officers should have managed to have a long week end. Ginevra had had a match on the Saturday and was not required for practice until Wednesday, Draco and Harry had shown willing and acted as part of the Auror team protecting the match. Not that the magical spectators had been too unruly. A ‘Silencio Magna’ had stopped the chanting reaching any muggle ears. Astoria had presented the two duty-auror mages apologies to the Wizengamot and had also presented Dorothy as the new elfin seneschal.
###
After church on Sunday and the Parish Lunch three goblin friends were inducted into the Dumbledorian Fellowship, Ganymede, Probert and Selwyn. They would also be jumping the fire that evening which meant that their godfathers had to be there. Once the Society membership had been performed the Seers went to see Uncle Travis. He had been, with the help of Bookworm, investigating the problem of making simultaneous portals.
“No-one seems to have recorded it happening. My gut-feeling is that as long as it is on the same ley-line then it should be possible.”
“Well, that specification is fulfilled at least,” remarked Astoria, “Thank you, Uncle. It is a continuation from the Grunrasenhof through the Schwartzberg and via Chalet Cadmus. The one from the Dragon Sanctuary via Beauxbatons also meets the one from Hogwarts via Laggen Lodge there.”
“Glad to be of help, My Dear. Those conjunctions should only aid your portal meeting.”
Just to be sure, they went to see Ivanova and she confirmed their supposition.
###
They managed to have a couple of hour’s rest before the fire ceremony. Oatcakes shared, the Seers went to Number Twelve and packed the miniaturised cabinets into stasis boxes. Porting to Guéthary they left Astoria there. Three went as far as El Altogranja. Leaving Harry and Ginevra at that halfway point, Draco continued the apparition to the Hacienda. Firstly, with the two girls watching mentally, Harry made the portal to their Iberian base with Draco. Afterwards, Harry supervised Ginevra and Astoria making their first portal to Guéthary. Then they spent half an hour handing through some of the Dumbledorians.
Later that day, once the Seers had recovered, they discovered that most of the Dumbledorians had been to the Hacienda and introduced themselves to the clerics and elves.
###
Nigel Wolpert and Leanne came to see the Seers afterwards.
“Harry, we both speak fluent Spanish and Leanne’s family originally came from Spain. She’s even got some distant relations living in the village. We’d like to volunteer if you are searching for someone to look after the Hacienda.”
A:*I would recommend them.*
D:*So would I. Nigel mentioned that he would like to help the habitants make more of their land. I checked with Horrty and he said both of them have green fingers.*
“Fine … Nigel and Leanne … We’ll give you a trial year to see how you get on.”
“Thanks Harry, that’ll get our folks off our backs.”
So it was that the two Wolperts took up residence, and eleven months later the Seers attended the baptism, by Heironimo, of their first son – Carlos Iago Wolpert.
~~~ THURSDAY 11TH NOVEMBER ~~~
Being Astoria’s birthday, the family celebrated in the evening using the main dining room at Grimmauld place. She was teased slightly for being the youngest of the quartet.
~~~ FINAL NINE WEEKS OF 2004 ~~~
Fairly soon the humdrum of normalcy took over from the excitement of the train journey and Spanish revelations. Ginevra’s tummy was now beginning to show, and the Blake household slowly adjusted to her special moods. Nigel and Leanne took up residence in the Hacienda de Alfareros quickly making hits with the habitants. Heironimo delegated Estéban to be the liaison between mages and the Spanish holdings. The estate team used the portals extensively as they had to oversee the increasing number of properties. Narcissa and Grandmamma reaffirmed their friendship and were mines of information into which the management team delved extensively.
As well as Hacienda visits, Harry or another of the Seers spent many Saturday afternoons ensconced in a teaching room at the Dragon Sanctuary with Paulus, conducting the promised Parselmouth classes. Draco and Harry also managed to fit in their surfing activities at Guéthary and the Wizengamot meetings. Thus, their weekends were extremely full. However, working the shift system in the Auror Department quite often gave them spare time in the mid-week. Sometimes they were required to be on duty on Sunday mornings, but they managed to attend one of John’s or Heironimo’s weekday masses.
###
Hyatt and Fenton loved the quaint English Village, they also scored a hit with Mrs Amis, who had known she had American cousins, but had lost touch with them. Hyatt’s Dad and Mom came over for a brief visit; staying in the Farmers Arms and enjoying the ‘Old Fashioned Hospitality’ as they called it. They came ostensibly to thank Harry’s gang for rescuing the two boys.
Somehow, over a lavish dinner in the Farmers Arms celebrating Justin’s quarter-century, Harry and Draco by using personal anecdotes, managed to convince the father that press-ganging his son and his mate into the family business was the best way to lose them. The result was that Mrs Amis gained two industrious helpers and was able, at last, to take some time off. The boys took up the offer to have a flat at Chantry Cottage, loving the fact that nude bathing was almost de rigueur. They also made firm friends with the Stamps and regularly visited the Yates at the farm.
###
This December the extended magely family held their Christmas festivities at Grimmauld Place. Followed as usual with the New Year celebratory WWW fireworks.
Draco and Astoria had their special calendar when they kept trysts in the bedroom. After six months all that had happened was that they no longer burnt each other during intercourse. By that time Ginny was heavy with child and the Seer household began to plan for the birthing.
~~~ SATURDAY 15TH JANUARY 2005 ~~~
That Saturday evening, they were gathered quietly, recovering from the usual hectic and extended family Christmas. Harry had arrived back from the Sanctuary and a corpulent Ginevra took up her accustomed seat on the triple sofa with Astoria beside her. Harry and Draco sat entwined on the double couch on the other side of the chimney breast: a very domestic, if nonconformist scene. Grandmamma was reading and Narcissa had her embroidery out, contentedly listening to her family natter.
“I still think you should have a family name, for, despite the Malfoy predilection for stellar names, I was named after one of my great-uncles,” said Draco.
“Good pure-blood tradition, that!” put in Astoria.
“My second name is my mum’s and yours is your dad’s Harry. So, you can say that all wizarding families follow that pattern,” offered Ginevra.
“I had a look at Ronnie’s book,” offered Draco: “It said that the Hidalgo was Alpheus James Potter and was married to Dorinda Duindhu. They had a son called Carlos Iago, I suspect that that’s the one who is called Charlus in the tapestry. You know, the one that was caught by the Nazis and executed.
“Fine … What does that mean? James if it’s a boy and Lily if it’s a girl?”
“There’s an Uncle James in the Weasley clan somewhere, so that’d fulfil both sides, wouldn’t it?”
“A couple of James’s on our side too,” added Draco.
“I think I’d like to remember my Godfather too,” mused Harry.
“My husband’s second name was Sirius,” added Grandmamma, peering through her pince-nez.
Narcissa looked up from her hoop. “The Black/Blakes have many Sirius’s in their ancestry Harry; James Sirius would encompass all the families.”
“Okay James Sirius, if it’s a boy, that is. That okay with you Ginny?”
“I think the baby agrees with that,” said Ginevra feeling at her abdomen. “It’s kicking me, but gently.”
There was an interlude when everyone took their turn to place their hands on her tummy and feel the baby moving inside her womb.
“Okay … Boys’ names sorted. What if it’s a girl?” asked Draco.
“Lots of Lily’s in the Greengrass clan,” said Grandmamma, putting her book aside.
“A couple in the Weasleys too.”
“Um … That’s settled then. What about a second name?
There ensued a long discussion with lots of suggestions but no outright front runner.
“As you’ve named one after your Godfather Harry why not name one after her Godmother?”
That started another long discussion about suitable Godmothers and fathers. Most of the candidates were easy: Draco and Ronald to be the boy’s supporters and Astoria to be the girl’s.
“I know she’s slightly out of it sometimes, but Luna helped me a lot and in some quite unexpected ways. How about her as the girl’s second Godmother?”
“I like that idea Harry; Lilly Luna Potter sounds lovely.” Ginevra grinned at him.
“My second name is Luna, not that I use it a lot,” said Grandmamma, blushing.
“Um … That’s settled then … See what pops out and reserve the other names for another one.”
Ginevra looked all coy: “So, are you planning to have your naughty way with me again, Harry?”
Draco rolled about in mirth and Harry blushed bright scarlet. “N-n-no, I meant that … Oh dear … Whatever I say I’m in deep shit, aren’t I?”
“Good thing we’re a tolerant lot.” Astoria managed to say in between chuckles.
Names settled they then went on to discuss the arrangements for Astoria’s twenty-third birthday in three days’ time.
"Less than a month to go, and then I’ll no longer be they baby of the family,” she quipped, because they were ragging her about being wet-behind-the-ears.
~~~ MONDAY 24TH JANUARY ~~~
Late in January came the fateful day; Ginevra was adamant that she wanted to birth at home. Harry was worried in case the green magic caused complications. In the end Poppy came over and supervised whilst Lavender and Ernie did the practicalities. There were no complications; except that Harry could feel every little birthing pain through the link; however, it was not quite as severe for Draco and Astoria. All four of the seers were worn out by the time Harry greeted his new son and promptly fainted.
In the weeks following Ginevra took things slowly, Draco clucked like a hen, Harry could do nothing else but smile and Astoria fussed around everyone. Somehow James became four people’s son with a host of non-related uncles and Aunts all living close by. Andromeda, Narcissa, Petunia and the new Great-grandmamma all went broody and squabbled gently over who should baby-sit. The Prophet had a field day twice, once about the birth and then about James’s baptism in Saint Godric’s church two Sundays later.
To combat the baby blues when Ginevra’s mood swings became unpredictable Draco consulted Severus’s Apothecaries and made up a potion containing St John’s Wort; one of the many medicinal plants growing around the parish. What also helped her was the support from the other three seers and the grandparents. Both Harry and Draco took their parental duties very seriously.
~~~ TUESDAY 1ST MARCH ~~~
Ronald had forgotten that it was his 25th birthday but Hermione had not. A great number of the Dumbledorians had been marshalled in the Milkwood Barn. Under some pretext Harry was deputed to bring the birthday boy along supposedly to practice a new charm. As it was dark everybody kept silence until Ron lit his wand to see what they were doing. He jumped when everybody yelled “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RON.” The assembly then had one of those parties where truth or dare really came into their own. Ending up, with everyone running nakedly through the Milkwood and back to the cottage before swimming in the pool.
###
For the seers there was another celebration. Ginevra had now regained her vitality and to celebrate they took a day off on one of the boats at the chalet. Astoria had insisted that she and Ginevra need a change of view and, with a particular gleam in her eye, had told the two husbands to accompany them. Draco was a bit peeved about being ordered around, but as he had no potions on the go, he could find no plausible excuse.
Only when he stripped to do some sunbathing in their sheltered cove, did he realise why Astoria had been so insistent. Four beings pushed out of the water and landed sitting on the quayside. Gravelbanks and Meltwater he recognised with a twitch of libidinous anticipation. The other two appeared to have female forms.
Ginevra and Astoria nakedly exited the boathouse and, squealing in excitement jumped into the water.
“Well? What are you waiting for, Draco?” Meltwater asked.
“Mmm … some gillyweed?”
“Got it right here.”
Just then there was a big splash, because a nude Harry had dived off the railings of the patio, two storeys above. Draco may not have been enthusiastic about coming to the chalet – He was definitely enthusiastic now.
Later, Nubbins junior came out with a tray and eight glasses. He did leer slightly; but pretended he had not noticed the spent pricks and used vaginas on the lolling magicals. Draco was quite surprised that the Lymnads relished the odd glass of white wine. Not that he was rude enough to say anything out loud. However, his mates did hear his astonished remarks within their minds.
~~~ SUNDAY 27th MARCH ~~~
As was customary, the Easter festival was marked with some ceremonial at St. Godric’s and included the first communions of the newly confirmed mages. The church seemed to have become the focus for all the magical believers. Not only the thaumic villagers attended, but others apparated over, as well.
Headmistress McGonagall had had many of the students working on a pageant, which they presented on Easter Monday. As usual, Dan had managed to have the square traffic free for the day, [much easier since the village was now isolated], so that all the residents and many of the visiting mages could enjoy themselves. The evening finished with the usual WWW Fireworks and many of the Dumbledorians retired to Chantry Cottage’s Patio afterwards.
Neville and Hannah were regular visitors at Chantry Cottage. They were sitting in the inner circle; who were relaxing after James had finally gone to sleep in the nursery, which was where the single guest room used to be.
“This is your seventh year as village seer, isn’t it, Harry?” asked Neville.
“Um … Yes … I suppose it is. Why do you ask?”
Draco hugged his lover and grinned at him, winking at Neville. Ronald, Ginevra and Astoria began to laugh openly. Harry looked slightly annoyed at being the unwitting butt of one of his friend’s jokes.
“I imagine it’s one of those magical tradition things, Harry; one that we supposedly muggle-borns know nothing about,” put in Hermione, giving her husband a scathing look.
“You have a special duty to perform for your community this year on Beltane eve.” Hannah looked mystical: “And every seventh year thereafter.”
As Seamus and Dean had now joined the group; Dean hammered out a dance rhythm using a table as a drum and Seamus hissed; pretending to shake a sistrum.
Harry went bright red. “It’s green man stuff again isn’t it?” he sighed.
“And how!” Draco put out his tongue; panting lascivious dog style.
“Stop it, Draco; you’re starting to get me worked up.”
“Practising already? It’s only a few days off.” Ronald remarked.
“Um … So, I have to get naked and dance, I presume; like we do to rescue flattened fields and diseased crops.”
“This time all the seven farms will need blessing with seed.” Neville became serious. “The Celtic Knot seems efficacious for Godric’s Hollow, so we’ll base the dance on that. Only we won’t sit down at the end. Okay.”
“I can do that one in my sleep,” replied Harry: “I’ve forgotten how many times we’ve danced it.”
“Ah yes, Lover, but this has a few extras.” Draco smirked suggestively. “Not that you’ll have to worry about them, Neville and I carry out the additional moves; you just give the farmers the seed.”
“Do I give it in any special way?”
“No, just do it naturally.”
Harry got the feeling that some information was missing from this conversation. Try as he might, his mage-born friends could not, or would not enlighten him. Even the Seer’s common mind avoided replying to his probes. Later, it became obvious that Hermione knew, because she kept on giving him mysterious smiles. Either Ronald had told her or, more likely, she had raided the library; something that Harry intended to do but never really managed.
~~~ SATURDAY 2ND APRIL ~~~
Having attended George’s twenty-seventh riotous do on the first; Harry forgot all about the foregoing conversation because he had been put in charge of Teddy’s 7th Birthday Party. It was chaotic because all the schoolchildren from the church school had been invited to attend. Luckily it did not rain, so Horrty’s team organised a hide and seek game in Milk Woods. Winky came up trumps with a birthday cake.
Grandmamma and Narcissa retired to the upstairs nursery, partly to ensure that the little darlings did not disturb baby James, and partly to escape the infantile chaos.
