  • Chapter 14

Snape removed Hermione’s leg from around his waist and pulled himself up to his feet taking Hermione’s hand and bringing her with him. She stood trembling unable to meet the Headmasters eyes as Snape gently placed a hand on her shoulder, hoping it would reassure her. He glared at the Headmaster as he spoke.

“I am far to old to invent any petty excuses over what you have most inconveniently interrupted Albus. Therefore, I will tender my resignation to you tomorrow and leave the castle immediately after." Snape said with dignity while Dumbledore eyed him cautiously. “I will show you to the door now Albus and begin to pack my belongings…”

“NO!” shouted Hermione who was finally brought from her shock as he began to move away from her. She clutched his arm and proudly raised her chin to the Headmaster.

“If Severus leaves then so do I.” she said determinedly. Snape turned to look at her and brought his hands to cradle her face.

“Hermione love,” he started softly, “I am not leaving you. I knew what the consequences would be if we ever were found out. You need to stay here and finish your schooling. When you have done so, I promise you, I will be there for you, should you decide that you do still want to continue with me by your side.”

“Severus,” Hermione countered, “I have spent too long waiting for you to have you ripped out of my life now all for the sake of a few months. I am of legal age and as such I am capable of making my own independent decisions about my life. I choose to follow you tomorrow. I would follow you to the end of my life, if need be.” She said looking deep within his eyes from which she noticed a single tear fall and roll down his cheek. Snape pulled her into a tight embrace as she began to cry herself. Their tender moment was rudely interrupted by a chuckle from Dumbledore.

“How dare you” Snape hissed harshly at the man whom he had always consideredbe abe a father.

“Calm down, Severus.” Dumbledore started. “Severus, I have known you since you were a child, and have always considered you to be the son I never had. I watched you struggle with yourself as you grew and comforted you when you came to me and confessed the mistakes you had made. I offered you forgiveness when you needed it and looked on proudly and fearfully as you fulfilled the promise you made for me all those years ago. It tore my heart out every time you went to meet Voldemort and returned on the brink of death to provide the Order of the Phoenix with the vital information it needed to keep the students of this school, and the world at large, safe from the greatest danger it had ever known. So many times I wished that I could take your place to shield you from the atrocities you were forced to endure. I watched on with a heavy heart, as you continued with your classes, despite the turmoil in your private life, wishing that there were something I could do for you to bring some happiness into your life. I have never in my life felt as helpless as I did as I watched over you everyday for over 30 years not being able to do anything to ease the pain I knew you were in. I now believe I have the opportunity to cle mye my own conscience.” Dumbledore finished wi tre tremor in his voice as his own eyes began to water.

“What exactly are you saying Albus?” inquired Snape, narrowing his eyes.

“I am going to ask you a question Severus, and for the first time in our friendship I want a blunt, honest answer. Do you understand?” Snape nodded his reply.

“Severus, what exactly do you feel for Miss Granger?”

‘Don’t do it Sev, Don’t bloody do it Sev. Don’t Goddamn bloody do it Sev…”

“I love her Albus.” Snape said without a trace of doubt. ‘That’s it! I give up! I’m out of here. See you in another lifetime Sev. (Door Slams).”

Hermione gasped at his confession and turned to search his eyes for any sign of regret or reservation. There was neither. She smiled brightly back at him

“And Hermione” Dumbledore said, “ What do you feel for Severus?” She looked deep within Snape’s eyes.

‘It’s now or never ‘Mione- all or nothing.’,/i>

“I love him Headmaster. More than my own life.” Snape let out a breath but never the less looked at her in shock. It caused her to continue. “This is not the way I had planned on telling you, especially so soon. My feelings, however, are real and have been for some time now. I want to be with you. I want to make myself happy by making you happy. I want to give you what you have denied yourself for years because you thought you were unworthy to experience anything but pain, suffering and isolation. You deserve so much more than anyone else in our world to be loved and find peace and I would be honored if you let me share it with you.”

Snape let out an anguished sob before embracing Hermione like a man who was about to die, except the words she had spoken had made him feel alive for the first time in his life. After a long moment Snape finally composed himself. He turned to Dumbledore ready to tell him to go shove something unpleasant up one very tight orifice when he noticed an all too familiar and equally irritating twinkle in the old man’s eyes.

“Severus...” Dumbledore started “If you hand in your resignation tomorrow, I am sorry, I will not accept it. I see no coercion here on your part and I believe the feelings you have declared for each other to be true. It would oolioolish and cruel of me to reprimand you for finding something that I had dreamed for years that you would experience one day in your life. Miss Granger you are without a doubt the most brilliant and beautiful witch I believe I have ever met and nothing would make me happier to see you with my son. Please love him with everything you have my dear, and please don’t break his heart. I would be truly grateful and indebted to you if you would grant this request me. me.” Dumbledore finished.

Hermione was unable to suppress the joy she had felt hearing these words and rushed into Dumbledore’s arms, kissing him on the cheek and thanking him in a whisper. He hugged her back enthusiastically before pulling away.

“Now.” Dumbledore started “How is the research coming along?”

“In all honesty Headmaster, not so good.” Hermione answered. “The medicinal potions have failed as did the urinalysis we completed earlier today.” She smirked at Snape’s snort when she said this.

“We have run through every possible scenario through our heads Albus but the limitations of the wizarding way of doing things has been reached. Hermione’s friend Artemis sent us the Muggle urinalysis test which we completed only after we had exhausted all magical processes. I don’t believe that we will ever find the problem. The Muggle urinalysis was our last lead –“

“Actually Severus,” Hermione interrupted “there are more Muggle tests that we could experiment with if we hadn’t lost all our specialists at St Mungo’s”. ‘If only there was someone we could find to help us.’ Hermione mused whilst chewing on her bottom lip.

“What are you talking about Miss Granger” Dumbledore queried.

“Blood tests Sir. That is another common way that Muggles diagnose illness. There are a series of blood tests that can be done to assess liver function. They include testing serum bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspertate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase and serum proteins. I haven’t even bothered asking Madam Pomfrey for her assistance because this kind of testing needs to be done by someone who knows blood well. I highly doubt there is anyone now who does, and we can’t exactly run to the Muggle world to get a specialist there to do it.” Hermione said dejectedly.

“Actually Miss Granger,” Dumbledore intervened, “I believe that Severus is acquainted with someone that knows blood very well and who I am sure could be persuaded to aid us in this cause.” He finished smirking in Snape’s general direction.

“Just who are you talking abou…” Snape started before the light bulb went off in his head. “No Albus, absolutely not.” He said sharply.

    “Surely after 21 years Severus…”

“I said no old man. That is the end of this discussion.”

“I’m sorry but could someone please fill me in as to what you are both going on about. Severus if you know someone who can help us it is imperative that we at least try to approach them. We have an obligation to all those in our community…”

“I said no and I mean it. Before you ask, no, I don’t want to talk about it either.” Snape said sulkily.

“Severus I would hate to see you start your relationship with Miss Granger on anything less than an honest grounding. For this reason I believe I will take it upon myself to share with her why exactly you are determined to hinder the search for a cure.” Dumbledore said with a playful tone in his voice.

“What are you talking about Headmaster? What does this have to do with my relationship with Severus?”

“Nothing Hermione, it has nothing to do with us.” Snape spat.

“Don’t take that bloody tone with me Snape. I swear if someone doesn’t tell me what is going on I’ll hex both of you into next week – nothing personal Headmaster.” Hermione threatened.

“None taken my dear.” Dumbledore chuckled. “Severus I do believe that you should be the one to break the news seeing as you’re the one opposed to the idea.”

“Damn you for forcing my hand in this Albus.” Snape hissed. Dumbledore laughed outright at his reaction. Snape sent him his best classroom scowl before turning to Hermione taking her hand and telling her his story.

“When I was 16 my parents, as was the custom of the time, signed a coct bct binding me to an arranged marriage. The person that they had chosen had only just been born so at the time I didn’t give it much thought. Like every 16 year old though, I wanted to date and I had grand illusions of marrying someone out of love. That is when I met Lilliana. I thought I was in love with her. In hindsight though, coupled with the wisdom that age grants you, I realize that my feelings for her were born out of teenage rebellion and being the rebellious son I was I married her when I was 18 just to spite my parents.” Hermione gasped but he continued. “It only lasted about 2 years, it was really a sham of a marriage from the beginning. When I left Voldemort, I left Lilliana too. I wanted to make a completely new start for myself, and she was more than relieved when I asked her for an annulment. There hadn’t been any love been us, almost since the time we were married.” Snape finished.

“Okay,” said Hermione cautiously “I don’t understand how this may help with our research though.”

Snape sighed and turned to Dumbledore. “I really hate you for this, you know that don’t you old man.” He said. Dumbledore just smiled and waved him off.

“Stop stalling Snape and tell me.” Hermione said getting frustrated with his dancing.

“Fine, but if you laugh at me I swear…”

“Just open your mouth and say it.”

“Sheisavampire.” Snape muttered almost to himself.

“Pardon me?” said Hermione trying hard to fight her rising giggles.

“Lilliana, was, is a vampire.” He finished while staring at something suddenly incredibly interesting on the floor.

She tried, oh Gods how she tried not to laugh, but in the end all the classroom rumors she remembered about him actually being a vampire and the suitably embarrassingly shade of red he was turning was too much for her. The laugh started as a snort she tried to cover, but it wouldn’t go away. She started to snicker, moved on to a closed mouth giggle, then an open mouth laugh before a raging cackle filled the dungeons. Hermione fell to her knees with tears in her eyes and the Headmaster stated chuckling right along side her. She laughed so hard she started hiccupping and grabbed her side as a painful stitch invaded her abdomen.

Snape just glared at her until she was finished, but to his dismay it wasn’t anytime soon. “I’m sorry, Severus.” Hermione said in between gasping for air and stifling her amusement as best she could. “It is just the color you turned and thinking about all those times I’ve heard students call you an over grown bat and speculate that you are a vampire because you never leave the dungeons, I just, I just…” It was no good, she cracked up again. After what seemed like hours to Snape he finally found his voice.

“Have you quite finished Miss Granger.” he sneered at her.

“Don’t you 'Miss Granger' me Snape.” she said rising to her feet.

“Don’t call me 'Snape' then.” He said crossing his arms. Hermione answered by poking her tongue out at him.

“Children when you are quite finished.” said Dumbledore who had been watching on in amusement.

“I am finished n sai said Hermione “So, when do we go and meet the ex-Mrs Snape then Severus?” The laughter was threatening to come back; Snape sensed it and kissed her roughly before she had a chance to break down again. One wae was certain that she wouldn’t lose it, he pulled away.

“If you insist that we do this…”

    “I do.”

“Then I suggest that we leave tomorrow. I will apparate us there, no wait, I’m too bloody exhausted, we’ll portkey it. Albus could you create one for us?”

“Of course my boy. I believe that I will leave both of your own devices and speak to you tomorrow now. Let me just say again how pleased I am about the two of you finding each other. I also leave it to your discretion as to whether you choose to go public at this point. That having being said, Hermione I am sure your head of house would begin to be suspicious if you take much longer to return to your rooms. It is long after curfew and I for one am exhausted from tonight’s… entertainment. Good night, Miss Granger, Severus.” and with that Dumbledore left with a twinkle still in his eye.

“Bloody hell I thought he would never leave.” Hermione sighed after the door closed.

“I know -meddlesome old fool.” Snape said as he pulled Hermione to him in a relieved embrace. “He is right though, it is very late and we are goto hto have a big day tomorrow”.

“Hmmm.” Came Hermione’s reply. “I need a long hot bath before I go to bed. I also want to owl Artemis tonight, so I am afraid that I am going to have to leave you love.”

“Hermione...” Snape started as he drew her chin up with a gentle finger so she was looking him in the eye. “I didn’t mean for everything to come out in the open like that so soon, but I hope you know that I meant every word I said. I love you and only you and I am not ashamed by the fact that I confessed it in the manner I did.”

“I know love. And the same goes for me.” Hermione leant up and kissed him gently as she answered. “ I really do need to go though. I’ve got to send that owl off tonight." She said as she pulled away and headed for the door.

    “Hermione I…” Snape started.

“Yes?” She turned back wearily to him.

“Nothing love.” He kissed her as he guided her out the door. “I will see you at breakfast” He said smiling.

She smiled back. “Good night Severus.”

“Sweet dreams Sweet.” Snape said as he closed the door for the night. 'What a bloody day' he thought as he stripped off and collapsed beneath the black satin sheets of his bed. He fell to sleep with a smile on his face.
