Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 16: Welcome to Married Life
On Christmas morning, Severus woke, enraptured by the beauty of his angel. She was sleeping very peacefully, and had a slight smile on her face. "I still think the fates made a horrible mistake— giving me the love of someone as wonderful as you." He reached over her and placed a kiss to her forehead. He felt better this Christmas than he ever had, and realized it had something to do with the fact he would never spend Christmas alone again.
He quietly dressed, pulling on his flannel pajama pants, and wrapping his terry-cloth robe tightly around him. He wanted to surprise Hermione this morning. He tiptoed over to the closet and pulled out the red velvet, fur lined robe he had bought her for Christmas. The slippers were charmed with a warming spell, as was the robe. He hung it on the bed, and then softly exited the room.
Severus was walking down the staircase when he glanced out the window. The snow was falling madly and it appeared it had been doing so for quite some time. The ground was a white blanket, and there were icicles glistening in the trees. It truly was a perfect Christmas.
He went into the kitchen, and began preparing a little bit of breakfast for his wife— his wife. Severus truly never thought he would be able to list husband to his short list of attributes. And in a few months, father would be on that list as well. He smiled at the thought.
Once inside the kitchen, he turned on the wireless and listened to the music playing. While pouring himself a cup of hot tea, he reminisced about the prior evening and how magical it had all been. He doubted there had ever been a more beautiful wedding in all of London, and he knew there had never been a more beautiful bride in all the world. He ran his thumb over his wedding band, and smiled once more. If any students would have seen him, they would have been terrified. Professor Severus Snape doesn't smile. But husband and soon to be father Severus does smile. And quite eloquently, it would seem.
He started making her breakfast; eggs, toast, and some juice when a long forgotten Christmas Carol came on the Wireless. It reminded him of his childhood spent with his Grandfather and Grandmother Snape. They loved Severus very much, and at times it seemed as if they loved him more than his own parents did. He always sang carols with his Nana, and it had been quite some time since he had something to sing about. He arranged the food on her plate, and started humming the song. It was O' Holy Night, one of his favorites.
Before he knew it, he was singing the soft melody aloud, in fact, so loud that his new wife heard him when she was coming down the stairs. "Well, that solves where you're at," she said to herself, and followed the enchanting voice into the kitchen. She had no idea he could sing, nor any idea his voice was so beautiful.
She had woke, alone, and found the beautiful robe he'd left for her. She'd put it on and decided to find her husband. She didn't want to spend even one minute without him. She was pleasantly surprised to see him acting so, well, normal. There were no barriers up, no facades, only pure Severus. It was one of the few times she'd ever seen him so relaxed, so at peace. He placed one final sprig of mint onto her plate and turned towards the door. However, she was standing in the way smiling at him.
"Happy Christmas, Love." She walked over to him, and kissed him tenderly.
"Hermione, you've ruined my surprise." She glanced at the plate in his arms, and felt a bit guilty for not staying in bed.
"I'm sorry Severus. I thought that you were in the sitting room. I can go back to bed and act surprised." He looked at her lovingly, and realized it didn't matter where they ate.
"Nonsense. Come sit with me." He led the way to the sitting room, and the pile of presents that awaited them. "Well, I had no idea I was so popular." She scowled at him.
"Severus, quit beating yourself up. It is Christmas and I want to hear nothing about how disliked you are." He shrugged in response. They sat down and began eating the feast of food Severus had prepared. "My Gods! How much food do you think I can eat?"
"I was hoping you'd share a piece of toast or two." They ate in silence and listened to the wireless softly coming from the kitchen. It was now playing I'll Be For For Christmas, and Hermione realized that she'd never be going to her home for Christmas. She choked back her sobs, but Severus saw right through her.
"Is something wrong dear? Is the breakfast cold? The tea too strong?" He reached for her hand and pulled her closer to him.
"This song just made me realize that I'll never be going home for Christmas." Hermione really never talked about her parents, but Severus knew she missed them. The letter they'd sent her announcing their decision not to attend her wedding left her distraught for a few days. It really upset her, but she wouldn't dare let anyone know. Well, no one but Severus. She couldn't hide anything from him.
"Hermione, you are home. This is your home."
"Severus, do you want to know what I did last Christmas, and the Christmas before?" She didn't wait for his response. "The year before last, I sat home and drank away my sorrows with more than my fair share of wine. And last year, I had dinner at the Burrow, then I apparated home only to find no one there. They were on holiday. Without me. I had no idea where they were. It wasn't until I phoned my cousin Sheila that I found out they were in Australia visiting an aunt of mine." Her tears were flowing freely down her face now, and Severus was at a loss for words. He wanted her Christmas to be perfect, and it seemed that would take a miracle. One he knew not even Albus could perform.
"Would you like to go and see them? They can only shut the door in our face." She shook her head vehemently, so Severus let it rest. He had previously purchased tickets for the Nutcracker Ballet that was playing at the Coliseum, and thought since they would already be in London, they might drop by for quick visit. But, she assured him she didn't want to go.
"Come on. There's something we need to do, but first we must dress. And warmly of course." Severus' mention of clothes made her remember the new robe he had bought for her.
"Severus, I've lost my manners. Thank you for the robe. It's exquisite."
"Well, I saw it and I realized I had to buy it for you."
"You have excellent taste."
"No, you do." He leaned over to press a kiss to her lips, but an owl at the window disturbed them. "Who's present haven't we received?" She shrugged her answer, so he let the owl in. Only, there were three owls, and there was a rather large package tied to each of the owls. It was addressed to Severus and there was no indication of who the sender was.
"Open it Severus."
He tore the brown paper away, and revealed a stunning portrait of Hermione in her wedding gown. Neither one knew who had taken the picture, but they both knew who had painted it"—Lily. She was a rather talented artist, as Severus had learned while still at school. Lily could capture the beauty in even the most evil thing. Her heart allowed her that.
"I know where this will go. Follow me." He led her down a long corridor, and she couldn't recall ever being in this particular part of the house before.
"Where are we Severus?"
"We're entering the portrait room. Come on in here. All the members of my immediate family have some sort of portrait on the walls here."
He led her into a large, octagonal room, and he was right. The walls were adorned with many portraits. One wall was entirely dedicated to Severus. She saw one of him with his mother, one with his mother and father. He was around seven or so with his sister, but the one when he was three captured her heart. He was so innocent, so young and so full of life. His round cheeks were tinted with the slightest blush. The blue suit he had on, and the little white bear in his arms made him look so lovable.
He noticed she fancied it, and commented on the portrait. "I was only a baby then. Didn't even know what horrors my future held." He ran a finger along the outside of the frame, and his younger self barely noticed him. "Here, let's hang it here."
He pulled down a portrait of his mother from above the mantle. "You'll look perfect here." Hermione his her large smile at the thought of Prisca's face when she saw that her portrait had been removed.
"Won't your mother be offended?"
"Hermione, she's no longer the lady of the house. You are. You're my wife, not her." He pulled her over to him and wrapped his arms around her belly. The baby growing inside her gave him a new idea of what to use against the Dementor's if he should ever meet one. He now had many more pleasant thoughts to remember when casting his patronus.
"Now, we must dress. I have something planned for you." He led her back up to their rooms, where he helped her shower and dress. "We're going out," he said as he pulled his charcoal jumper over his head. "I've got plans." She laced up her boots, and pulled on her cloak.
"Ready?" Severus handed her the muffler she'd bought, and led her downstairs. They traveled into London, and did a bit of window shopping before heading to the Coliseum. Hermione couldn't believe her eyes when they arrived. "I know how much you love the Ballet, and so I thought you'd enjoy it."
They quickly found their seats, and enjoyed the nearly three hour show. Severus had seen it once before, but still enjoyed the orchestra most of all. Hermione rested her head on his shoulder as she watched, and Severus held her tightly. They received a few stares and whispers but it didn't matter to him. What did these people know about their relationship? Who were they to judge?
Once the show was finished, and they returned home, Severus helped her change into more comfortable clothes, and led her to the parlor. He wanted to share one dance with her before bed. The wireless, now moved into the parlor, was playing a very romantic classical piece.
Taking her arms in his, they glided over the floor, totally enraptured by being with one another.
When the new year came, Severus sprung some surprising, but yet welcomed news on her. They were sitting in the library, each reading one of their new novels. Severus had been wanting to tell her for some time, but couldn't. However, as they were expected back at Hogwarts the following evening, he supposed the time had run out. "I'm really not sure how you'll take this, but I've decided not to go back to Hogwarts. Remus and Harry have agreed to split my classes until Albus can find a suitable replacement." He placed his marker in the book, and set it aside.
"You're sure about this? You've really thought it through?" She mirrored his motions, placing the book on top of his. She looked into his eyes, watching his facial expressions. When he returned her gaze, she had all the explanation she needed.
"Hermione, I've hid behind those castle walls for so long. I'm ready for a change. I'm ready to show the world to you and to our child. From now on, I want to be with you. I don't want you to be in our chambers at Hogwarts, waiting patiently for me to return from teaching. And despite my obvious fondness for my students, I no longer desire to teach." She nearly choked at his scathing remark, and let the comfortable realisation rest.
"Well, it will be nice spending each day with you here, instead of in front of hundreds of students, and those nosy professors." He reached over and grasped her hand into his. "However, I must get my things, from my old chambers, as well as what I still have at home."
"We can ask Albus to have the elves pack up your things, however I must retrieve mine. You should understand that we've no need to worry about money, I've saved nearly all my salary for the past twenty years. I've longed for the day that I could retire and work on my research. I need to live Hermione, and quit only existing. I can do that with you, here away from Hogwarts." She nodded at him, and they realized it was settled. Neither one truly wanted to go back, not now that they had found love and someone to share their lives with.
"Well, I guess that's that. However, I'd like to get my things from my parents' home. They're my belongings, and I've left them there for too long. Shall we go tomorrow?" He knew there was another reason behind her wanting to go home, but he didn't pry.
"Of course. We'll leave tomorrow after lunch."
