Ginny sank into the nearest open seat at Ron’s announcement. With a calm she didn’t feel, she asked, “Was anyone hurt?”
Ron shrugged and shook his head. “They won’t tell us anything. The only reason I know it was the Burrow is because I overheard Professor Malfoy and Professor Dumbledore.”
”They caught us eavesdropping and sent us down here,” Harry added.
Hermione sat next to Ginny. She asked, “How does everyone else know?”
”That would be my fault,” Draco answered with a blush. “We were trying to get through the hall and no one would get out of our way so I yelled that a student’s home had been attacked and that everyone needed to get to the Great Hall.”
Elkara put her hand on Draco’s arm and said, “That was probably a really good thing to do Draco. I don’t think the Burrow was the only place attacked.”
They were soon joined by Neville, Luna, Rachel, and Hannah. The ten students made their way toward the end of the table nearest the Head Table. They saw that all of the teachers, except McGonagall, Malfoy, and Dumbledore were in front of the table trying to calm the frightened students. A few minutes later, the missing three teachers entered through the teachers’ entrance. Dumbledore walked to the front of the table and asked for silence. The students were immediately quiet, many of them even sitting down and feigning calm.
”Thank you. Now, you’ve probably heard that there was an attack on a student’s home,” the Headmaster said. “Unfortunately, this is true. Even more unfortunate, it seems there were multiple attacks around the same time.”
There was an uproar from the students, many of them asking the same question, “Was it my house?”
Dumbledore called for silence again, and when he got it, he said, “I need for all of you to return to your common rooms. The students whose homes have been attacked will be collected from their common rooms.”
Hermione’s head was spinning. Multiple attacks? In one day? She wondered if one the homes was hers. She mindlessly followed Draco to the Head Table. She didn’t bother to see if the rest of their group was behind her.
”Headmaster?” Draco called when they reached the table.
Dumbledore looked down and smiled tiredly at the blond boy. “Yes, Mr. Malfoy?”
”Would it be okay if Pansy, Ginny, Harry, Ron, Neville, Luna, and Rachel came to the Head’s Common Room?” the Slytherin asked.
Dumbledore motioned for Professors Sprout and Flitwick to join him and the other two Heads of House. He asked, “Would it be permissible for these students to join Mr. Malfoy and Miss Granger in the Head’s Common Room?”
The Heads of House all gave their permission and the group left the Great Hall. They walked silently to the Head’s Common Room. They didn’t speak as they rearranged the furniture and littered the floor with cushions and blankets. They all knew it was bound to be a long night and none of them wanted to be alone. The silence continued as they arranged themselves on the floor and remained until there was a knock at the portrait hole. Hermione got up to see who was on the other side. She didn’t speak as she pushed the portrait further open to permit Dumbledore, Lucius, McGonagall, and Flitwick.
Dumbledore cleared his throat and addressed the other teachers, “Perhaps it would better if we separated them, to give them some privacy.”
Hermione said, “No, Headmaster. We’re here together because we trust each other, please just tell us.”
”Very well, Miss Granger,” Dumbledore sighed, the twinkle in his eye gone. He continued, “The homes that were attacked belong to the Weasley’s, the Granger’s, the Dursley’s, the Lovegood’s, and the Longbottom’s. Fortunately, no one was killed. Mr. Longbottom, your grandmother sustained mild injuries and should be out of St. Mungo’s by tomorrow morning. Miss Lovegood, your father is unharmed. Harry, your relatives were moved to a safe house this morning, as were yours Miss Granger. Mr. and Miss Weasley, your parents are fine and want you to remember the gift you brought Harry back from Egypt.”
Four minds turned to the Sneakoscope that was currently wrapped in a sock and stuck in the bottom of Harry’s trunk.
McGonagall and Dumbledore left a few minutes later, after making sure that all the students were okay. Lucius stayed behind under the pretense of wanting to spend some time with his son.
”Now that they’re gone, tell me, are you really okay?” Lucius asked as soon as the portrait closed.
It was Harry that answered for the group, “Yes, Professor, we’re fine. Thank you for your concern.”
They decided that they were all going to spend the night in the Head’s Dorms. Ron’s stomach grumbled loudly and they remembered that they hadn’t had dinner. Harry called Dobby and asked him to bring them some sandwiches and pumpkin juice.
”Professor, would you like to join us?” Harry asked when the food arrived.
”Yes, Harry, thank you,” Lucius answered, helping himself to a sandwich and settling himself in an arm chair.
Once the teens had eaten their fill, Lucius called Harry and Hermione over to him. When they reached his chair, he said softly, “Your relatives are under the Fidelius Charm, you will have to see Albus for their locations.”
Harry thanked Lucius for the information and made his way back over to the group. He settled himself between Hannah and Ginny, and was soon asleep with his head in his girlfriend’s lap. To her credit, Hannah didn’t miss a beat when Harry started snoring softly. She covered him with a blanket and kept right on talking to Pansy.
Lucius watched the rather odd group of students strewn about the room with immense pride and wonder. He had never imagined that he would students from all four houses willingly gathered in one room and getting along. Hermione squeezed his wrist and went to join her friends in the center of the room. Lucius smiled to himself as she ‘accidentally’ tripped over Draco, knocking him sideways into Pansy, who dramatically fell into Rachel. This caused a domino effect, and soon they were all on their sides, except Harry, who was still sleeping. Draco was soon on his feet and tackled Hermione, making sure she landed on a pile of cushions. Hermione launched one of the pillows at Draco’s head and missed. It nearly hit Lucius and he decided that it was time for him to leave. He wanted to talk to his son, but it could wait until morning.
Lucius stood, saying, “Good night, ladies and gentlemen. I hope you will be well rested for class tomorrow.”
His answer was a pillow to the face. He rolled his eyes in a very un-Malfoy like manner and said, “Thank you, Draco. I’ll expect you ten minutes early.”
He dodged three more pillows on his way out, one of which he suspected had been thrown by Hermione. Once in the corridor, Lucius shook his head at the antics of his favorite group of students. The portrait hole opened and Hermione darted out, kissed him on the cheek, and ran back in. Smiling to himself, Lucius headed to his chambers for some much needed rest.
I know I’m terrible about updating! This chapter didn’t turn out nearly as dramatic as I had hoped it would. Hopefully, Chapter 17 will be better, and I promise not to make you guys wait several months for it. As always R&R!
