CH 16 I have ships?
“No one is trying to trick you Kreatcher, and you are correct, Regulus did not have a child, but Sirius did.” Albus told the elf.
“NOOO.” Screamed the elf, scaring the life out of Lou, she grabbed hold of Severus as the elf screamed and shouted, much as Mrs Black did the first time she’d met her.
“STOP IT.“ She yelled. Lou crackled with energy, small sparks firing in all directions as she looked horrified at Kreatcher.
Severus winced in pain at her reaction, but she was gripping too tightly for him to push her away from him.
Immediately, Kreatcher stopped his tirade and stared at her, shocked. He’d been forced to obey her.
“What on earths wrong with you? You’re like the lady in the picture, she screamed the same things you did. Well she doesn’t do it now, we get on alright, me and her. Why did you carry on like that?” She asked, the crackling aura gone as she unconsciously controlled her temper, Severus breathing a sigh of relief.
“You is truly a Black, but you is that blood traitors daughter. I is not serving a blood traitor.” he told her. He stood with his arms folded, a scowl on his face and his nose in the air.
“Who said I want you? You’re a mean little bugger and I don’t like you. I’m gonna tell Mrs Black about you.” She slapped her hand across her mouth and looked at Severus, suddenly realising that she’d swore in front of him.
Severus remained impassive. He heard her curse quite clearly, but said nothing for the moment. Kreatcher was enough to make anyone swear.
“Sorry Professor, it just sort of slipped out.”
“I know, do not let it happen again. Now, what do you wish to do with …” He waved his hand in the general direction of Kreatcher, who actualy looked afraid.
“What you is saying to the mistress Black? Kreatcher is her loyal servant for many years. She is not talking to the likes of you.”
“On the contrary Kreatcher, she holds the young lady in high regard.”
Everyone turned to see who spoke.
“Phineas, I take it you are here to meet your thrice great granddaughter?” Albus greeted the man in the portrait.
His what?” Lou asked.
“Your grandfather, three times great, Phineas Nigellus Black.” Albus told Lou. “Phineas, your granddaughter, Louhi Melaina Nilsen-Black, Sirius’ daughter.”
“Walburga has spoken to me of you, she tells me you hold many secrets, but that others hold you back, prevent you from conversing with her. Is this true?”
“Err …” She looked to Severus and chewed her lip nervously, not wanting to lie, but not wanting to get him in trouble either. “I don’t have any secrets.”
Severus spoke to Phineas, saving her from further discomfort. “It is true, we have discouraged contact between them. Louhi is ignorant of the troubles in our world, for now it is better that she remains so.”
“What gives you the right to make such a decision? You are not her family, you are nothing to her.”
“He has every right Phineas, he is her protector, they share a life bond. Also he is correct when he tells you she is not ready to hear everything about our world, she has troubles enough as it is.”
“Headmaster.” Severus said, rising from his chair. “I think it best that we leave now. Some things are best explained …sans attendance.”
“Certainly Severus. I shall explain to Phineas when you have gone.”
Lou was looking at everyone in turn, wondering what was going on, knowing they were keeping something from her but having no idea what. “What about him?” She pointed at Kreatcher, who stood sulking in a corner, but eyeing her curiously.
“Kreatcher is coming home to the house of Black. He is serving the young miss now, Kreatcher helps the young miss to clean the house of dirty mudbloods, traitors and scum.”
“No.” Lou wailed. “I don’t want you to. I mean, you have to stay here.” “Doesn’t he?” She turned to Albus.
“If you so desire, it would be preferable, but he will only obey you now, so you must tell him to stay.”
“Me? Why me? I don’t want hi …oh, alright. Kreatcher, will you stay here please. The headmaster will tell you what to do. I don’t know what to do with you and I have Moon. I’m sorry.”
“You is saying sorry to Kreatcher, but you is leaving me here with traitors. Kreatcher wishes to come home, to serve the young miss.”
“Kreatcher I don’t know anything about traitors and bloodmuds, and until I do, you’ll have to stay, for now at least. I have to come to school here though, maybe we could see each other then, but not if your nasty like at first.”
The Headmaster sent the elf back to the kitchens and Severus led Lou from the office, leaving Albus to tell Phineas what they knew about her.
“What’s a bloodmud?” She asked Severus when they reached the main hall.”
“Mudblood, and it is not a term I wish to hear you use. Mudblood is a derogatory term for a witch or wizard born of muggle parentage. Should you hear of anyone using this term, you inform myself, or another member of staff at the first opportunity. Is that understood?”
“Yeah, but isn’t that tattle tailing? I’m not a tattle tail, if I hear something I don’t like, I’ll deal with it myself.”
“And how do you intend to do that?”
“I’ll tell them to shut up.”
“And if they do not?”
“I’ll punch em.”
“I think not. You will only get yourself in trouble if you do that. Believe me, you do not wish to earn yourself detentions, nor the loss of house points, your housemates will not appreciate it if you do. You are not here to fight Lou, you are here to learn, nothing more. If I hear that you have misbehaved while at this school, I shall undertake to punish you myself, in addition to any punishment doled out by any other member of staff. You have been warned. Now, do you want this flying lesson or not.”
“Yes please. Are you angry at me again?”
“No, I just want you to think about your actions in future, before you do something we all may regret. If you are uncertain of what to do, ask either myself, or Remus while at the house, while at Hogwarts, you may ask a member of staff. Are we clear on that point?”
“Yeah. Verba non acta.” (Words, not actions)
“Correct. Incidentally, you did very well up there. You controlled your magic quite well.”
“You think so? I didn’t even realise I’d stopped it at first, it just sort of happened. Does that mean I get to lose this?” She touched the collar at her throat.
“No. You only have control of a small percentage of your magic at the moment and you are still learning to contain that. Were the collar removed now, it would be disastrous.”
“It’s gonna take forever isn’t it?”
“Not if you do as instructed. Now, let us go fly.”
“Severus?”
He raised a questioning eyebrow at her.
“Why did you put the cuff on outside, I wouldn’t have run away.”
“It did it for your own protection. Had you lost control you might have flown out of Hogwarts grounds, I would have had a devil of a job to catch you if you had. That reminds me, I shall have to remove it so you can step outside. You can enter a building with it on, but you cannot leave.”
He slipped the cuff off and Lou waited, expecting him to replace it with the proximity chain like he usually did.
“Well come on, what are you waiting for?”
“Aren’t you gonna put the chain on?”
“Would you prefer that I did?”
“No.” She said, smiling and hurrying to catch him up. “Does this mean you trust me now?”
“It means that you cannot go too far while you are wearing the cuff, I will know where you are regardless.”
“Oh.” Her face dropped.
“Trust is a hard thing to earn Lou, but you are trying I believe.”
“I am, I wont run away, I promise.”
“Good. Mount your broom, lets see what the problem was first time around.” He removed the brooms from his pocket and enlarged them. “Can you not bend that leg any further?”
“No, it’s too stiff and tight. It hurts like mad if I try.”
Therein lies your problem of balance. You need to compensate somehow for the inability to use you right leg properly, I shall speak to Madam Hootch when term begins, she is our resident flying instructor.”
“What year will I be in?”
“Fifth year.”
“That means they start here at eleven.”
“It does.”
“I wont know any more then the first years when I start. Everybody’s gonna think I’m thick.”
“Put the broom aside and sit down.” He told her, sitting on the grass beside her. Lou, you told me that your teachers rebuked you because you did not apply yourself as they wished, why was that?”
“Because it was too easy and I got bored. I wanted to do something harder.”
“You taught yourself Latin?”
“Yeah, it wasn’t easy, but I liked doing it.”
“What about maths?”
“Oh that was just plain boring. It was too easy and I had numbers swimming in my head. When I told the teacher she’d got some equations wrong on the board, she sent me to stand in the corridor, said I didn’t know what I was talking about. When I got let in later though, she’d altered them to my answers.”
“I think Lou that you are very intelligent, that you have been overlooked when it comes to learning. You should not have too much difficulty catching up. I shall speak to the Headmaster about it. Meanwhile, we are wasting good flying time, come on.”
Getting to her feet, she looked at him. “You think I’m intelligent? Really?”
“Perhaps.” Severus answered, watching her from the corner of his eye.
Lou grinned from ear to ear, but said no more. They figured out that if she held her left leg as awkwardly as her right, she could balance and stay the right way up. Within the hour, she could fly, a little unsteadily, but she could do it. Her landings left something to be desired, mainly because she couldn’t hold her feet in the correct position and kept jarring her leg.
“Oh that smarts. You know what?”
“What?”
“You forgot to put the cuff on me.”
“I did not forget.”
Lou locked her eyes on his, astonished. Then she ran the couple of steps it took to reach him and hugged him tight. “Thank you. For trusting me, thank you.”
“Yes, well it was only a trial run.” He told her, trying to remove her from his person. “For Merlin’s sake, let go of me.”
“Sorry.” She told him, letting her hands fall to her sides. “I was just a bit …I dunno. Sorry.”
“Do not let it happen again. I think it best we go back now. I take it you also left your suave at home.”
“Yeah, I didn’t know where we were going.”
Lou was subdued. She’d never tried to hug anyone for a long time, she didn’t even think about what she was doing. Lou felt so happy that he’d trusted her, that she just did it, but to be pushed away and rejected like that, it hurt.
“Something is wrong, I can tell.” He remarked.
“No, everything’s fine.” She lied.
“Everything is not fine young lady. I thought you were going to be honest with me from now on.” He said as they made their way to the gates.
Lou studied the ground as she answered. “You’ll think I’m daft.”
“Let me be the judge of that.”
“When I hugged you, I didn’t mean to, it just kind of happened.”
“And that is a problem?”
“No. It was just that …when you …pushed me away, it hurt …sort of.”
“I see.” He rubbed the bridge of his nose with his fingers.
“It’s alright, I understand.” She said. Though she didn’t.
“Do you indeed? What exactly do you understand?”
“That you don’t want me to touch you. You still don‘t like me.”
“Lou, it is not that you should not touch others, and all children should experience hugs at some time in their life, but I am a grown wizard, and you are a child. We are out here alone, should someone chance to see us, it could be misconstrued. Personally, I am not a tactile person, it does not mean I dislike you. Do you understand what I am telling you?”
“Yes. At least I think so. No more hugs because people might think we’re …you know, but maybe you like me. Is that right? Or is it because I‘m not huggable?”
“Something like that. Though as far as being huggable is concerned, Lou, I am not your father, so I cannot give you that kind of contact, no matter how much you crave it. I am sorry.”
“I like you too, except when you’re mad at me, and I don‘t think of you in a dad way, at least I don‘t think I do. Friend would be good though. Can we do friends?”
“Only up to a point. I am more than twenty years your senior, you need friends your own age. When you begin your life at Hogwarts, you will have ample opportunity to make friends, at that time I shall be your teacher. As such, we cannot be friends.”
“That sucks. In don’t mix that well with my own age group, any age group really. You’re the first person I ever wanted to be friends with. If you wont be friends with me, no one else will.”
‘Gods how did I get myself into this?’ He wondered. “We can be …acquaintances. How does that sound?”
“Alright I suppose. It’s better then no one.”
They were outside the gates now, and once they were locked and warded, Severus took her by the arm and Apparated. He decided it would be best not to hold her too close from now on.
Lou noticed the grip on her arm instead of the usual hold he took on her and she felt a bit let down. She decided it was best to let it go, at least she had an acquaintance. She giggled at the thought.
“What is so funny?” Severus asked, as they walked down Grimauld Place.
“The thought of being someone’s acquaintance. It just seems funny. Posh.” She added, sticking her nose in the air and putting on an airy walk in front of him. Much to his amusement. “Grimauld Place, so that’s where we live.” Lou had stopped to read the sign on the first house.
‘Damn.’ He thought. He’d never notice the sign before. “It is, but you tell no one. You are never to repeat this address to another living soul.”
“Why not?”
“I shall explain it to you later, just promise that you will not reveal it to anyone.” He hissed, taking her arm and speeding up their approach to number twelve. He’d hoped not to have to tell her anything yet, now he would have to reveal things to her before either of them were ready.
“Okay, but your hurting me.” She complained as she stumbled along.
He relaxed his grip. “It was not my intention.” Once they were safely indoors, he replaced the cuff, much to Lou’s annoyance, and led her into the drawing room. From there he accio’d her wand. “Hold it in your right hand and repeat after me.”
Lou held her wand, wondering what was going on.
“I swear an oath to never reveal the whereabouts’ of this dwelling to another soul. Anything I see or hear in this dwelling, stays in this dwelling.”
Lou repeated his words and a burst of magic came from her wand, swirled around her and vanished. “What was that? Why did I have to do it?”
“That was a wizards oath, it cannot be broken. Should you attempt to do so, the consequences would be disastrous for you.”
“Oh great, thanks a lot. Why?”
“As I told you, later.”
“It’s later now.”
“Go use the murlap, I shall put the kettle on.”
By the time she came down stairs, her leg felt a lot better and Severus had made a pot of tea. “Thanks for today, I really enjoyed flying.”
“You are most welcome, now come and have some tea.”
Once she was settled, Lou turned to him again. “What was all that about with Kricha?”
“His name is Kreatcher, he is the one last piece of evidence required to prove your right to claim your inheritance.”
“My what? I haven’t …I don’t …err.”
“You are the last direct descendant of the Black family. Your father left a will, leaving everything to his godson. He knew nothing of your existence, otherwise I believe he would have left you most, if not everything, following his demise. Unfortunately, the current recipient of your father’s will, expected to come into this inheritance on his seventeenth birthday. At the moment he is under the impression that he owns this house and the fortunes that go with it. He will have to be told otherwise, and soon.”
“That sounds a bit awkward.”
“It is. There is another problem also. At the moment, this house is headquarters to a secret society called the Order of the Phoenix, and at this moment it is working to overthrow an evil warlord.”
“Warlord? It sounds like something from a film or a book. Who’s the warlord?”
“It does not matter right now. What does matter however, is that we are now left with nowhere to meet, should you claim this house and not allow us to meet here any longer.”
“Is that why you made me take that vow, so you could tell me about the warlord and your secret society?”
“It is, I would also like you to consider letting us continue to use this place as we have been doing. I know it is a lot for you to take in right now, you will need time to think things through. If you have any questions, now would be a good time to ask them.”
“Who’s this warlord, and what’s he done?”
“The Dark Lord, aka Voldemort, aka Tom Riddle, also known as He-who-must-not-be-named.” Severus went on to explain as simply as he could, what Voldemort was trying to do, what he’d so far done, and what the Order hoped to do. He told her as much as she needed to know and no more.
“He sounds like Hitler, maybe even worse. Yeah you can keep having your meetings here. I’d be lost in a place this big on my own, I wouldn’t know what to do with it. Anyway, I can’t afford to keep it up.”
“There are no additional expenses attached to owning a wizarding home. It belongs to you and that is it. There are no bills to pay as such, since there is no electric or gas. Nor will telephones work here. You will have money, I believe the headmaster is making the arrangements for you to have access to all of the Black family vaults.”
“Vaults? I have vaults?”
“Of course, where else would you keep your Galleons?”
“I’ve got ships? Bloo …what am I gonna do with ships?” She asked stunned.
Severus could not help laughing and it was a couple of minutes before he could speak. “Ships, you do not have ships.” He chuckled. “Our currency is different to that of muggles. They have pounds, we have Galleons.” He leaned over to retrieve some change from his pocket. “These are Galleons, knutts and sickles.” He told her, laying the coins on the table. He explained the different coins and there value, and told her she probably had quite a lot of them in the vaults at Gringott’s.
“Gringott’s?”
“The wizarding bank. It is the safest place in wizarding Britain, after Hogwarts that is.”
“I’ll have my own money. Hey, I can pay you back now.” She told him excitedly.
“I am insulted. I gave those things as a gift, I do not expect, nor desire to be paid.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m not used to this receiving thing.”
“Something else you will need to become used to.”
“What about this other person, my dad’s godson? I don’t want him to think he’s getting pushed out, he’ll feel awful and so will I.”
“I doubt that. He hates this place and decided to leave it in the hands of the Order as soon as he discovered the contents of the will. He already has a small fortune of his own. It will not be any great loss to him.”
“My dad must have liked him a lot though, to leave him all this, won’t he be sad?”
“I have no idea. You can ask him yourself in a couple of days, he and the Weasley clan are arriving on Saturday, expecting to run riot throughout the house.”
“The Weasley clan? Is that something to do with Mrs Weasley, and the battery man?”
“It is, plus Potter and Granger are with them most of the time.”
“Potter and Granger. Potter’s Harry right? He speaks Parceltongue like me?”
At his nod she continued. “So who’s Granger?”
