LEECH
Chapter 16
“What, just you and me? Won’t that look a bit, you know?”
“A bit what, Kathy?” He purred her name this time, enjoying the effect he was having on her.
She shivered. “Well, I don’t know, a bit not right.”
Severus smiled. “I would not think it would look like anything, considering that no one will see us. Or would you prefer to hug a tree in daylight, in front of Albus, Hagrid, and possibly any students that might be here over the holiday period?”
‘Hagrid? Students?’ “Maybe now would be a good time, and it’s a while since I had any fresh air. Why aren’t there any windows in these rooms?”
“We are in the dungeons, well below ground level. In fact if you were to dig through that wall there, you would find yourself in the lake, rather the lake would find its way in here. This side of the dungeons sides directly onto it.”
“Dungeons, crikey. I thought they only existed in fairy tales, dungeons, right. I sometimes forget where I am.”
“Understandable after five weeks of being confined to your rooms. Only one brief excursion I believe.” He raised an eyebrow.
“Ah yeah, about that thing in your classroom, it just kind of happened. The elf, it was hurting itself, so I grabbed it, but then it passed out and I wrapped it up and you were the first person I thought of, and I, we, it sort of happened. I was there, and you was really mad, and I didn’t know how to explain it. I’m babbling again. Shut up Kathy.”
He chuckled, an amused glint in his eyes. “I confess to being rather startled at the time. It is not everyday that a young woman simply appears from nowhere to land practically at my feet. Albus did explain later what happened, don’t worry about it.”
“Easy for you to say, you didn’t walk into a cupboard.”
“He laughed again. “That was rather amusing I must admit. Especially when you marched out and attempted to repeat the process with my supply closet.”
“It’s not funny, don’t laugh at me.” She admonished, laughing as well. “I bet if that young girl hadn’t shown me the right door you’d have let me go in there.”
“Ah yes, Miss Granger was the one to assist you I believe. Always did stick her nose in where it wasn’t wanted.”
“Oh you. I’ll get my coat, give me a minute.”
“I need to get my cloak, I’ll meet you in my office.”
“Thank you by the way.” He said once they were wrapped up warmly.
At her questioning look he added. “For cleaning my office. I do not allow the elves in here, and it has been a while since it has had such a thorough going over. Even Cyclopes seemed happy.”
“Cyclopes?”
He pointed at the one eyed creature in a large jar that promptly winked at her.
“Oh, you mean Jack. I can’t believe you keep live things in jars. It’s a horrible hobby. Can’t you collect model trains or lead soldiers something?”
He smirked as he led her out of the office and into the corridor. ‘Jack? Did she just call Cyclopes, Jack?’
“Blimey, I’m sure there weren’t this many steps when I got here, what did you do, breed ’em?” She puffed as they neared the top of the dungeon steps.
“There have always been one hundred and two step leading up, and forty eight leading down. I often wish it were the other way round.”
“Your kidding me right, about the numbers?”
“Not at all. Count them on your way back.”
“This place is crazy.”
“No Kathy, it is magic.”
When they exited the castle Kathy paused to feel the cool night air on her face. “Oh that feels good. I’d forgotten what outside was like.”
Severus glanced sideways at her. She looked even more attractive in the moonlight, even with that hideous headscarf wrapped round her head and fastened under her chin.
He offered his arm and she hesitated.
“I might… I don’t want to hurt you, make you weak.”
“I wondered about that. The night you heard the mirror speak and I placed my hand over your mouth to stop you screaming. It was several days before I realised that I had no adverse effects from the encounter. Besides, I am well protected with several layers of clothing and you are wearing gloves.”
“Maybe some people aren’t affected by me, maybe there are others too, like you. It would be nice.” She added wistfully.
Severus didn’t respond, he didn’t know why he’d not been affected. Maybe some people were immune to Leechers. He’d have to remember to mention it to Albus.
They reached the edge of the forest and Severus indicated that she take hold of a tree.
Kathy started giggling as she removed her gloves. “I really do feel like a complete nit. What if nothing happens?”
“Try it and we’ll no for sure.” He was smiling, her laughter was becoming infectious. “Hug the tree.”
“I’m glad it’s dark, my face must be red as rhubarb.” She wrapped her arms around the tree and held onto it. “Nothings happening, except my hands are cold and it‘s scratching my cheek. Ooh” Wait a minute.”
“What? Tell me what you feel.”
“I dunno, it’s odd. You’ll think I’m mad.”
“Try me, now go on.”
“It’s like I’m… part of it, the tree I mean. Like I’m part of… everything here. The grass, the trees, all the trees, and the ground under my feet. I don’t know how else to say it, but I feel like I can… oh, hang on. Oh God, I can see it.”
“What? What can you see?” He asked anxiously.
“Anything, everything. Wherever the ground leads to, whatever the trees can see, I can see. There’s a tree in the forest somewhere and it has little moving things in it, like live wiggly sticks with arms and legs.”
“Bowtruckles. Go on.”
“And, oh Severus, I don’t like this. There are men, but they’re horses too, both at once, men’s heads and horses bums and they have, I don’t know what they are, pointy things and… another thing with string on it.”
“Centaurs, they carry bows and arrows.” He fought a chuckle at her description. Men’s heads and horses bums was not how he would describe a centaur.
Kathy let go of the tree and stared at him wildly. “Those things were real? Oh God. And what about horses with horns, I saw a picture of one once, a unicorn I think it was. Are they real? And something else, again like horses, but they were all skin and bones and black. Urgh.”
“Those were Thestrals, and yes, unicorns do inhabit the forest. This really is amazing. Did you see anything else?”
“So many different things, but it was all happening so fast, I don‘t want to do that again, I don‘t like it.”
“And how do you feel in yourself, any stronger?”
“No, I just can’t stop all these things from coming into my head. I really need a cup of tea now.”
He nodded and offered his arm.
“Wait a minute.” Kathy took his hand and removed his glove, then she took his hand and waited.
His eyes widened when a few moments later he was seeing the remnants of what she saw, even in the darkness he could see for miles over the tree tops, a herd of Hippogriffs at the far side of the forest, a small scurry of Nifflers digging at the base of a clump of trees. “Oh my, this is amazing. I would never have believed it had I not seen with my own two eyes.”
The images started to fade and Kathy released his hand reluctantly. His hand had felt nice around hers, warm and comforting. The things she saw didn’t seem half so unnerving while they were touching.
Severus felt a sudden disappointment at the loss of contact, and it wasn’t only because he could no longer see the beauty of nature from a totally new angle.
He led her back to the castle and Kathy counted the steps. “Mad.” She muttered at the bottom. “Forty eight exactly. Yet when you look back there’s twice as many.”
“Do you still want that tea, or would you prefer to join me for a brandy? I have a rather fine cognac in my study.”
“How about both. You provide the brandy and I’ll make the tea.”
“Your room or mine?” He asked, his voice suggestive.
Kathy was flustered. “Uh, mine, unless you want to go to yours, but mine has the kitchen. What do you think?”
He smiled inwardly. “Yours then, I will bring the brandy.”
Kathy scooted off to make the tea, removing her coat as she went and hoping her face returned to normal colour before he arrived.
