Chapter Fifteen - Without Your Love
Severus Snape woke up with a groan. Something was wrong. Very wrong. It took a few moments for his sleep fuzzed brain to work out what. Everything was red. EVERYTHING.
Granger and Harry had done it again - more tricks. This one, turning everything in the castle Gryffindor red was particularly annoying, he discovered, when he fell off his bed as he couldn't see the edge of it, then crashed into his bedside chair, as he couldn't see it.
Cursing violently under his breath, Severus pulled on what he hoped was a cloak, clutched hopefully for his wand, (and found it!) and felt for some shoes, then strode for the door. He slammed his nose into it, having reached it earlier than he had expected.
His cursing now NOT under his breath, he tore the door open and strode along the passage. All the paintings were red; their frames were red; the stone work was red; the hangings were red. It was thoroughly irritating.
'Finite incantatum!' He said strongly, but without much hope. The red became slightly less red. He growled.
He felt the wall, feeling where the corner was and turned into the new corridor. He saw a floating head and realised that the entire school was afflicted. 'Bloody hell!' he snarled.
Minerva McGonagall floated towards him. 'I tried ending the spell, Severus,' she said, without greeting him, 'and it made it a little paler.'
Snape nodded. 'As did I. How many times do we need to cast the damn spell to make it go altogether do you imagine?'
McGonagall shrugged, not that Severus could tell. 'No idea.' She raised her wand.
'OW!' Severus cried out, jabbed painfully in the stomach with an all-but-invisible wand.
'Sorry,' the witch said and re-cast the spell. Nothing happened.
Irritated, Severus tried as well. Nothing.
'Odd,' he commented.

Hermione grinned impishly at Harry in the only none-red place in Hogwarts: the Room of Requirement.
'How many times does 'Finite' need to be cast?' he asked, a little confused.
She sighed. Harry never seemed to understand her ideas, no matter how carefully she explained them! 'Well, it needs casting by everyone legitimately in the school - all the staff, all the students, all the House Elves, everyone.' She looked thoughtful. 'I wonder how long it'll take them to work that out.'
***
'Good, Zabini. Now you, Tinest.' Severus was grabbing students as they passed, and forcing each to cast the spell. So far the castle had turned a rather unpleasant cerise colour.
Since waking up, it had been forty-seven minutes, and the House Elves had not crossed his mind at all.

In the Forbidden Forest, Ron looked on in bemusement as the castle walls shifted from red through cerise and into pale pink. He shook his head, wondering how Hermione had managed it. He also wondered where they were hiding, as he had gone back to their camp site, but there was no sight of them, and clearly they hadn't been there for some time.
He wondered aimlessly in the forest, hoping against hope that he would spot some sign of them. He was afraid that they were hiding in the castle, which would be impossible for him to get into unless he went to Hogsmeade and used the passage in the shop. He really didn't relish the idea of walking back there as he'd had to apparate at Hogsmeade and walk up to the castle in the first place.
Walking around the wood gave him ample opportunity to mull over his likely reception. Harry would be fine - after all, Harry had been perfectly vile in fifth year and they'd remained friends - no, it was Hermione he was worried about. She'd hex him into tiny pieces, and, sadly, she had the ability and know-how to actually do just that.
Idly he kicked a log and then winced as it didn't move and instead he stubbed his toe. A sudden noise made him look up: students were streaming out of the castle, all the same shade of pink as the walls, and now they were casting spells at it from the outside, but it didn't seem to have any effect as far as Ron could make out.
He could just work out who the figure in pink with the straight black hair was: Snape, and Ron grinned to himself. It was probably the first (and last!) time that the austere Slytherin had worn anything so girly.
The crowds around the castle milled pointlessly for at least another thirty minutes. Ron was getting bored of watching them stand and point and sat down on a tree root to watch the developments.

'This is brilliant!' Ginny said as she pushed her way through the crowd, a number of the DA following in her wake. Neville was by her side, and he grinned broadly at the still discoloured building.
'Whilst Snape tries to sort this out, no one is checking where we are, so we can get into the forest and have a chat. Also,' she went on, nearly dancing with glee, 'he looks a total prat!'
Behind her the other children chuckled.
They reached the edge of the Forbidden Forest and, with a swift glance behind them, the DA plunged into the gloom.
'So,' Ginny began, once the group had settled on some logs and stones in a small clearing, 'we can't get in the Room of Requirement. I don't know why. Neville and I have tried a number of times, together and alone, but it just won't open. I'd be tempted to say someone is hiding there but it makes no sense.'
'Someone's doing these tricks,' one of the Ravenclaw's pointed out, 'so whoever it is could be hiding in the Room.'
'True,' Ginny conceded, 'but...'
'But why haven't they made themselves known to us?' Neville jumped in. 'Ginny and I have stood outside the Room and have made it clear we want to help, but still there is nothing. Maybe the school building itself is rebelling against You-Know-Who.'
There was a muttering at this.
'So,' Luna began dreamily, 'the school hates the Dark Lord? Perhaps it's got an infestation of Worzulletters.'
There was silence at this, as there often was silence after one of Luna's ideas.
'Erm, yeah...' Ginny said and hurried on, 'so, we don't have outside help, the Room is playing up, so what are we going to do to bring down Snape and the other Death Eaters?'
That stopped the children from looking so smug.
After a few moments' silence one said, 'What about ... What was that?'
They'd all heard it, snapping twigs. Instantly wands were drawn and pointed in the direction of the noise.
'Shh,' Ginny whispered and circled around the group to come at whatever it was from a different direction.
The rest of the DA waited nervously, edgy, silent.
'AHHH!'
They all ran in the direction of the scream. As he ran, Neville was vaguely aware that it hadn't sounded like Ginny. He grinned at the thought of her making some snooper scream like that.
He skidded to a halt, seeing her standing over a fallen person.
'Ron?!'
