I suppose I shall have ample opportunity to attempt to unravel your mysteries, Snape thought as he peered across the table at Orra.
As if she could hear him, Orra set her coffee mug down with a bang, catching his stare with one of her own. She sighed, blinked to break contact then rose to begin gathering the breakfast dishes.
“I will wash up,” Aideen offered excitedly. “You go retrieve that book!” Her eyes sparkled joyfully.
“I’ll help with the dishes,” Kellyn added.
“Oh, have it all planned out now, do you two?” Orra griped at her two lifelong friends.
“Just seizing the opportunity.” Aideen grinned at her, earning a small smile in return.
“Off to the dungeon, err, basement with you then,” Kellyn teased as well.
“May I accompany you?” Snape inquired.
“Certainly, if you must poke around in my rather depressing basement, do come along then.”
Orra sidled around the table to the heavy wooden door that led to her basement. She tugged it open and hit the light switch. Snape followed close behind her.
They descended the stone steps, worn smooth over time.
Snape stopped short at the bottom of the stairs. “What in the world?” he asked.
“Pretty sure this wasn’t always a rectory house,” Orra answered.
Snape stepped into the center of the room, spinning slowly to take in the many doorways leading down hallways and the ornate, hand carved knotwork adorning the walls. Orra stepped to one side to silently observe him.
“This is amazing,” he murmured. “Where do all the hallways lead?” he asked in awe.
“That one leads to the church.” Orra pointed to the one directly to her left. “Comes in handy when the weather turns foul and I have to sing Mass.”
“Indeed!”
“One leads out to where the stables once were.”
“What on earth did your mother do down here?” he sputtered.
“Mostly we used it for storage,” Orra replied very matter of factly. “Like this one, where I keep my mother’s things.” Orra disappeared into the hallway to the right of the stairs. Snape stood marveling at the circular room for a few seconds more before following her down the hall. “I think sometime, someone used this as a place to hide,” she continued explaining as Snape peered at the hallway lined with doors leading into small chambers. “Rather appropriate that Albus would send you here, then, eh?” she laughed a bit at her own realization.
“I venture that more than some one person hid here from the number of the rooms here,” Snape observed.
“True!” she huffed, pulling a sealed bin out of one of the rooms. She opened the bin, and hefted out a large leather bound book, its cover adorned with intricate knotwork. “Here.” She handed the heavy tome to Snape and resealed the bin, shoving it back into the room.
“Shall we take this back upstairs?” Snape probed his hostess as his fingers roamed over the leather cover, avarice alight in his eyes.
“Of course. Much too cool down here for me.” Orra shooed him back towards the stairs.
“This book is considerably older than your mother could possibly be,” Snape observed aloud.
“Well certainly it is. The book has been in my family for countless generations. I have no real idea how old it really is.”
“I am forced to admit that your friend is correct – the historical value alone makes this tome priceless.”
“This tome, as you call it, puts me in the very dangerous position of being called out as a witch. Not something I am much willing to face in this day and age.”
“Surely you do not think the kind people of your parish would burn you for such an accusation?”
Behind his back, Orra stopped dead, paling considerably. She shivered, closing her eyes to fight off just such a memory.
“Yes, Severus, I do,” she whispered.
He stopped and turned to face her. “Not while I am here,” he promised gently, balancing the book on his hip, he reached out one hand to her. “Never.”
She reached for his hand back, squeezing it in affirmation. She nodded towards the stairs. “Up you go. I need to pretend to be a witch and go through that book.”
“I do not think you need to pretend.”
Orra laughed, a hint of bitterness in it. “I am starting to think that you may be right. At least now, I have a guardian. Most likely, you will come to regret making that offer.”
“I have many regrets, Orra. Offering to protect you cannot possibly become another.”
“Time will tell.” She pushed past him on the landing, taking the book and laying it out on the kitchen table. “You all need to make yourselves scarce. I have quite a bit of reading to catch up on here.”
“Call us when you’re ready to go over what we need to do,” Kellyn offered, ushering Aideen towards the back door of the cottage.
“Of course I will.” Orra answered, settling at the table with a fresh cup of coffee. Snape stayed in the doorway, finding it to be a safe place to observe after all. “Oh, Aideen?”
“Yes, Orrs?”
“When did you tell Bill that we would attempt to do this healing?”
“With the next full moon, of course,” Aideen answered, a puzzled look crossing her face. “When else would we try to undo the work of a werewolf?”
Orra dropped her head to the book, shaking it slightly in denial. “A werewolf? We are going to try to undo the work of a werewolf? Aideen! How could you?” Orra almost whined in protest.
“How could I not? I know you can do this. I know we can do this. I know that this is the right thing to do. Bill Weasley is one of the good guys. I just know it.” Aideen argued.
“Great. Did you happen to think that the werewolf won’t be so happy to let us undo his work?”
