The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 16
Severus took his wand and with a quick spell, the leg of her jeans split down the front. He could immediately see that her kneecap was shattered, a small shard of bone protruding through the skin. Hence the blood. No wonder the girl looked so pale. “You pick now to shatter your patella, when there is no medi-witch in attendance.” He groused. He conjured a stretcher and levitated the now screeching Lucy onto it. He called for a house elf to notify the Headmaster what happened, placed a sticking spell on Lucy so she would not fall and headed for the infirmary, the stretcher floating behind him.
Albus entered the hospital wing in time to see Lucy being placed on one of the beds. “What happened?”
“Lucy was in no fit state to speak, so Severus told him his version of events. “Silly girl was racing along the corridor and crashed straight into me. She injured her knee when she fell. Her kneecap is shattered and I most likely have several cracked ribs. Why on earth did Poppy choose now to go on holiday?” He grumbled as he unwarded the medicinal potions cabinet.
“Wasn’t racing. Ghost got me.” Lucy gasped between sobs. Oh it hurts.” She cried. “Make it stop hurting.”
Albus moved to stand beside the bed, looking down at the knee, then up to her face. “The pain will ease soon my dear. You are fortunate that Severus is so skilled with potions and healing spells. He’ll soon have you feeling better.” He took her hand and patted it, regretting his action when she gripped it tight enough to crack his knuckles.
Severus approached the bed with a trolley of vials and equipment. “Here, drink this, it will ease the pain.”
Lucy snatched the bottle from him and gulped it down, relief slowly spreading across her face. “Oh that’s better, thanks.” She let her head flop down on the pillows, her sobs settling to a hitch. “Now what? Is it gonna start hurting again?”
“It will give you some pain for a while, these things cannot be healed overnight. However, the kneecap will need to undergo repair, and to do that I need you to take this. I prefer to work sans screaming.”
Lucy gave Severus a fearful look. “Screaming? Oh God, just give me whatever it is that’ll put me out. Please.” She begged him desperately.
Severus handed her the vial of sleeping potion. If the headmaster had not been in attendance, he would have enjoyed taunting the girl a little about the procedure he would use. As it was, it appeared Albus was staying so he decided it was better to just get on with it.
Lucy drank the potion and it was mere seconds before the two wizards in front of her became hazy and she succumbed to blackness.
“I need to undress her Albus, it might be best if one of the female staff was in attendance.”
“The library is nearest, I’ll ask Irma to come.” Albus left the infirmary to locate the librarian, while Severus made sure he had everything he needed to repair the girls knee, along with clean dressings, a gown and a magical knee brace.
“Oh my the poor girl.” Madam Pince exclaimed. Following Albus onto the ward and making for the bed where Lucy slept.
While he was waiting, Severus used his wand to sourgify the blood from Lucy’s knee and the make-up from her face. He also cast a ‘finite incantatum’ to remove any glamour she might be using. He needed to keep a close watch on her skin colour, lips and fingertips, as well as monitoring her breathing while he worked on the injury. He was stunned when her face took on the appearance of a much younger person. She still looked like Lucy, but now she appeared her age, rather than a young woman in her early twenties.
Although he did the finite, he did not really expect there to be any change. Glamour’s usually had the tell tale sign of small shimmers when the person moved, but this one had not.
The Headmaster noticed the change in her appearance immediately and gave Severus a questioning look.
He in turn shrugged his shoulders. “I have no idea how she did it Albus, however my main concern now is to repair this knee. Irma, if you wouldn’t mind undressing her and placing this gown on her instead, then I can begin.”
Irma Pince pulled the privacy screen around the bed and used her wand to magically undress the girl and place the gown on her. “There you go, she’s decent again.”
“Thank you Irma, you may go now.” Albus told her. “I know how squeamish you tend to get.”
“You’re welcome. Let me know when she needs a change of gown won’t you.”
Once she was gone, Severus used his wand to open the skin over Lucy’s knee, then set about magically repairing the shattered bone. Had it been a break in any other bone he could have given her a dose of Skelegrow, as it was, the patella, along with certain small bones in the hands and feet, did not react well to Skelegrow and tended to repair the bones in a grossly misshapen way. Albus sat next to her, keeping check on her breathing and colour as Severus worked for a good hour on the small fragments of bone. When he was done he poured an antiseptic and healing potion into the wound, closed the lesion, dressed it and fastened the knee brace in position. A quick charm and the brace adhered itself into place, moulding to the shape of her leg. It would magically adjust as the swelling increased, then decreased as her knee healed over the next week or two.
“She is lucky it happened here, and not in the muggle world. She would have spent months undergoing treatment for such an injury.” Albus commented. “You have done extremely well Severus. You would have made an excellent healer.”
Severus gave him a wry look. “Yes, my bedside manner is impeccable. I have a potion brewing that I need to check on, it might be a good idea to let her grandmother know about this.” He waved his wand, sending the trolley and it’s contents away before picking up his robes and leaving the ward.
Lucy woke to dim light and a dull throbbing in her right leg. Her head was woozy and she hadn’t a clue where she was. “Hello.” She croaked. He throat was dry and she tried to sit up, she let out a hoarse yelp as the aching throb in her knee became a sharp, agonizing pain.
“I’m coming, just hang on a minute.” Vanessa Vector made her way to Lucy’s bed. “I dozed off, I’m so sorry. Are you in pain?”
“Mmm. Lots of pain.” Lucy ground out through clenched teeth.
Vanessa lit some torches and looked through the array of bottles on the bedside cabinet. “Here we are, pain potion.”
Lucy greedily downed the contents of the small bottle, sighing in relief when the pain receded back to a dull ache once more. “Please can I have a drink of water. Where am I?”
Vanessa helped Lucy sit up and handed her a glass of water. “You’re in the hospital wing at Hogwarts. It was a nasty mess you made of that knee aparently. It’s lucky that Severus was here, he did a marvellous job of repairing it.”
“It doesn’t feel very marvellous.” She said a bit resentfully, remembering how he blamed her for knocking into him. “Shouldn’t I be in a proper hospital?”
“Oh no, not for something as minor as this. Now drink this and we can both get some sleep. I have an early start tomorrow. It’s been a real joy teaching you Lucy.”
“Thanks. Have a nice holiday Vanessa.“ She gave the Professor a weak smile and swallowed the contents of the vial. Once again she was asleep in seconds.
When Lucy woke again her gran was sitting beside her bed.
“Gran.” She wailed, opening her arms so the old witch could hug her. “I got possessed by a ghost, then I fell and my knee hurts. I want to come home.” She sobbed.
“Oh for heavens sake. You were not possessed. The Bloody Baron merely drifted through you.”
Lucy stared over her grans shoulder into the eyes of one Severus Snape. “It did so try and possess me.” She argued petulantly.
“That’s enough Lucy.” Hetty told her. “Professor Snape is correct. The ghosts at Hogwarts do have a tendency to float through students given a chance. And you should be thanking young Severus here, for doing such a wonderful job of healing your knee. Not everyone could have done so.”
Lucy chewed her tongue for a minute then took a deep breath. “Thank you.” She said sullenly.
A warning look from her grandmother and she tried again. “Thank you young Severus for mending my knee.” She told him, putting on her sweetest smile.
Severus’ eyes were hard as diamonds when he looked back at her. He felt like hexing the cheeky young chit. “Miss Grindelwald, it was in my best interest to heal you as soon as possible. How else would you be expected to attend one to one tutoring with me. I am sooo looking forward to our lessons.”
Lucy’s cheeky grin disappeared and she had the good grace to lower her eyes and blush. “Sorry.” She said quietly.
“I beg your pardon? I didn’t quite catch that.” Severus told her, though in fact he’d heard her clearly.
“I said I’m sorry Professor, for being cheeky. I had no right, not after... well, after you did this.” She reiterated, pointing at her injured leg.
Madam Grindelwald, I will leave you to your visit. I will be in the staff room if you need me.”
“Thank you.” Hetty told him, smiling. As soon as he left she turned back to Lucy. “Dear, you really will have to try and get on with that young man, he is a good teacher and did not deserve your disrespect.”
“I know gran, but he just seems to get by back up somehow. He’s sarcastic as hell and I tried making friends with him when he came to the house that day, but he turned me down flat. I know he sorted my leg and everything, but does he have to be such a pig all the time?”
“Lucy Grindelwald, that is enough. You will show him respect from now on. He is your Professor, he is older than you and you will show him the proper deference. Do you understand me?”
“Yes gran.” Lucy pouted for a while.
“Now, I’m afraid you’re going to have to stay here for at least a week. You need to keep that leg immobile so the potions have a chance to work. It’s too risky apparating and the floo is out of the question. Professor Snape has kindly agreed to continue as your healer until such times as we can get you home. Until then I will come and visit you each day and see how you are getting on.”
