Chapter 16 – A Surprising Development
Hermione was currently engaged in an exercise of extreme futility. The mystery of what her happiest memory could be was driving her crazy. She couldn't find it in her own mind since Sev... Professor Snape... had taken it from her. She was therefore attempting to sort through her memories in chronological order searching for a gap. This was both simplified and complicated by the fact that she had a nearly photographic memory.
She could recall nearly every significant moment of her life from the the age of 6 onward. However, this also meant that she had a lot more memories to search through than most people would. It was now lunch time and she had only made it to the summer when she had spent a month at her grandmother's in Rome when she was 8 years old. Those had been happy times to be certain but they really didn't seem to be good enough for the happiest memory of her life.
She was so lost in her wanderings through the past that she nearly collided with Ron and Harry who were coming up the marble staircase as she was headed down. Ron glared at her coldly and kept walking with Harry at his side. Had it been her imagination or had Harry looked a little embarrassed? He had avoided her eyes altogether and his face had been awfully red.
Shrugging it off she continued walking. Suddenly her eyes widened as a thought occurred to her.
“Of course!” she shouted, causing some third years to look up at her as though she had lost her mind. She blushed and passed by quickly. 'It must have been when Harry defeated Voldemort.' She was certain that the vanquishing of the most evil wizard in history at the hands of her best friend would be considered very happy.
Finally having figured out what she would have to deal with in her lesson tonight she trotted off to Transfiguration with a clear mind.

The dungeons were just as gloomy as always. The fire in the grate behind Professor Snape's desk, while keeping the owner of said desk nice and toasty, did little to lend any heat to the rest of the classroom. Her professor was sitting at his desk with his head bent low over a stack of papers that, from the look of red ink she could see, must belong to some first year Hufflepuffs.
“Enter.” He responded to her knock without lifting his head. She walked across the room and sat in her regular seat. She watched him scratch something that looked suspiciously like a “D” across the paper in front of him before looking up at her.
“Ah, Miss Granger...” he began meeting her eyes; and for a moment she could have sworn she saw enjoyment in them, as though he had found failing that student entertaining. “Are you ready for your lesson?”
She nodded and he got up and took her memory from inside the pocket of his robes and poured it into the pensieve that was sitting on the corner of his desk. “After you.” He said motioning toward the shimmering liquid. She leaned down and touched her face to the substance and felt her feet leave the floor.

Hermione found herself in the great hall at breakfast time. She looked around confused. This wasn't right... it should have been night time. She glanced around and found herself sitting with Ron, Harry, Ginny and Neville. She wracked her brain in an attempt to discover what about this moment had made her so happy. She glanced up at the staff table and saw Headmistress McGonagall stand up and call for silence. Her heart plummeted. She suddenly remembered exactly why they were here.
She looked around desperately for an escape and caught Professor Snape's eye. He too was looking around as though trying to determine what was coming but she knew he was not going to figure it out. Not at least until McGonagall finished talking. She had come to the end of telling them all about the candlelight vigil that would be held Thursday night in the grounds for the victims of the final battle. She glanced at her memory self and saw the tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Finally,” McGonagall added as though on a sidenote, “I have found the answer to our staffing problem and I am proud to say that Potion's classes will recommence on Monday morning.”
There was a buzzing around the room at this news as everyone asked the same question quietly. Finally Hermione had done what was expected of her and raised her hand. The Headmistress nodded at her.
“Please Headmistress,” She had asked feebly, “Who will be teaching Potions?”
The doors to the great hall had burst open dramatically and in had walked what was taken by most of the students to be a very solid ghost. The whole room fell silent and stared at Severus Snape as he stood in the doorway glaring around at everyone in his customary manner.
The tension finally broke and from all around her Hermione heard the sound of students from all four houses standing on their tables and cheering and clapping.
She hadn't been the only one to move. Harry had risen and taken a few steps toward the man who had saved his life too many times to count; but it had been Hermione who had run. Hermione who had rushed from her seat to throw her arms around the man who had seemly risen from the grave. It had been Hermione who had sobbed her joy and relief into his chest.
The fact that everyone in the great hall could see took a while to sink in but to her Professor's credit he didn't shove her away from him and humiliate her mercilessly. He cleared his throat rather quietly and spoke in a gentle teasing voice that she had never heard issue from him.
“This is not going to get you extra credit Miss Granger.”

I know that there is absolutely nothing that I could ever say to make up for my three year absence from writing on this story. So I won't bother trying. Suffice it to say that I missed you all horribly and I will do my best to stay on task this time.
Please review even if just to tell me what a big jerk I am for staying away so long.
