Chapter Sixteen: Runes
Harry and Oliver had lunch while Tommy napped, and then Oliver came back to Grimmauld Place for some time playing with the boy. When he and Tommy had made two pretend potions together, and Tommy had become interesting in a social gathering that his stuffed toys were to attend on the blanket Harry put out in the parlor, the two men researched the rune and the ways that it could be used to inhibit various spells and curses.
"It says that it is often put onto cauldrons, the ones used for dangerous potions, to inhibit the volatile aspects of the ingredients. It isn't used for spell work very often, because of the need to implant it into the subject before the casting. It takes a month to reach full potency." Harry read, but his eyes showed confusion and disbelief. "A month of inactivity, so that it isn't depleted by other spells and incantations."
"So, if Tommy has one, it took a month of him sitting still for it to be effective? I can't imagine him doing that willingly." Oliver suggested.
"I can't imagine Draco doing it, either. It's like they're two different people, Ollie. Don't forget that Draco was who he cast this curse, or whatever, on. Tommy is the result of it, not the victim."
"Sorry, he just doesn't look, or act, like the little git from school." Oliver smirked, and added. "And I should know. I had to be him for a year before I could change him into a more adult, mature and responsible person. Not that he wasn't deeper than we ever thought. It's just that he seems to be someone even deeper now, just growing up this way."
"Yeah, tell me about it. That's why I said it. He's not Draco, even though he clearly used to be. He's Tommy, and if we can't figure this out, he'll always be Tommy, exactly as he is right now. If we can decipher this whole rune business, at least he can become Tommy the grown-up, someday. I don't think anyone would want him to stay like this forever."
"And, if he grows up, he can find out about who he was, deal with it all, and take back his life. I know, what you mean. I feel guilty living his life, even though I've gotten to enjoy it, but I wouldn't take it from him, if I can help him."
"Yeah, and it's kinda fun playing with a baby, no matter how big he is, but I don't want to do it forever, either. And, if I have to, I will, but I want to give him something more. I think he lost much more than we did thanks to that mad man."
"More than we did? You lost your childhood, your parents, your adolescence and for a few seconds, your life. How could he have lost more?"
"He lost his life, too. But, he has to live with the loss. He has to keep on living without any of his life as a Malfoy, as a student, as an adolescent, and now as an adult. He doesn't have anything that I do. I have my memory, my friends and my future. In this state, he doesn't have that."
"Now I feel like a real troll. Sorry, Harry. I get it. I have bad memories, but I have good ones, too. I'd hate to have lost them, just to get rid of the horrible stuff."
Harry smiled and nodded, returned to his book knowing that Oliver would begin to heal a bit more, now that he had some new prospective. He thought about his own as he turned the page to search for a counter rune for the "berc-lagir-rzan".
Oliver left at dark, promising to come back and visit when his time as Draco Malfoy was over again, and Harry said he would owl if he found anything useful. Oliver had taken the drawing, as well as several others that Tommy had provided, so that Lucius and Narcissa could help their research. He leaned in and gave the green-eyed wizard a peck on the lips, just before he apparated away.
"Ollie will come back?" Tommy said from behind him, his gaze following the path down to the street where Wood had just disappeared.
"Yeah, he will. He has work to do, and he'll come when he's done. How about you make me some pepper-up potion? I'm feeling very tired today." Harry suggested, leading Tommy back to his little potions table.
An hour, and three pretend potions later, Tommy pronounced him in need of a nap, so Harry took his healer to Tommy's room and they laid on the bed together. Tommy fell asleep first, and Harry would have gotten up and done some more research, but he was pressed to the bed by the curly haired boy who was draped over his chest and sucking sleepily on his thumb, while drool leaked out of the corner of his mouth onto Harry's t-shirt. Harry dozed off and woke two hours later when Kreacher patted his cheek and handed him a letter.
Dr. Rheingold was connected with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and was often contacted when anything of importance was discovered in regards to his patients. He wrote to Harry when the location of the house where Voldemort had stayed before the Battle of Hogwarts was found and invited him to come with him to investigate it. Harry called George to stay with Tommy, as he had done on a previous occasion, and he hurried off to meet with the doctor.
The house, or the remains of a house, was a total loss and the aurors who were clearing the wreckage were careful to keep the two visitors from going to areas that had not been secured. Harry was impatient to find evidence that Tommy had been kept here, and the doctor was just as curious to see if this was where Draco had undergone the transformation that had changed him.
Finally, the door was uncovered and the walls braced enough to enter, and the two men moved forward, directly behind the wizards who entered. In the hallway of the entrance, three bodies were left to decay and Harry felt his intestines knot up. He averted his eyes, hoping that anything that would help would be found by the doctor, who was not as squeamish as he was.
"Harry, look here." Dr. Rheingold said and the Chosen One turned to see him examining one of the bodies. It was ghastly, but it was a shining piece of metal that Harry noticed had caught the doctor's eye. A silver hand lay on the ground.
"That's Wormtail! Peter Pettigrew!" Harry cried and the aurors turned around.
"How do you know?" the taller one, Lawrence McGinty asked.
"Voldemort gave him that, after he sacrificed his to give the Dark Lord a body. It's the only one I've ever seen. I didn't know he was dead."
"No one has been looking for him, since he was supposed to have died nearly twenty years ago. I guess this means we'll have to perform the spells with a magistrate here. If that's Pettigrew, it will need to be used to exonerate Sirius Black." the other, Greenwich, complained. Harry narrowed his eyes and the man looked away. "But, that's a good thing. If he was innocent, he deserves as much." the man said with a guilty tone.
"Then, we should continue." Rheingold said and he moved away and gestured them forward. They checked the few in-tact rooms, searching for any sign of the presence of Tom Riddle, or Tommy, in their depths. In the next to the last, they found a large crib-like structure and a trunk full of oversized baby clothes. Harry held up a blue blanket and sighed as the doctor moved toward the larger bed on the other side of the room. When the doctor looked back, he stared for a second. "That's a "berc-lagir-rzan". If that is here . . ."
"Tommy remembered this blanket. He drew it. I was going to show you on his next visit. These were his clothes and toys, if you can call them that. This was his home, I guess."
"Then, this is where he was Born, and there should be evidence of how it was done. I'll seal it off, so that those men do not disturb the residue. It will be interesting to see what we find." Rheingold sent off two spells in rapid succession and Harry felt himself washed with a bath of magic. Dr. Rheingold was a powerful man, and if he were to turn dark, Harry hoped someone else would be prophesied to fight him.
When he drew himself out of introspection, he saw the doctor waving his wand in every direction and repeating two phrases, "Revelio Intente and Illusious Replay" The visions that shot up from the furniture and the walls, from bits of cloth and other inanimate objects, played out a montage of scenes that showed Harry just what life would have been like in this room.
Major themes of this marathon of visions were of Voldemort availing himself of various captives and then abusing them further when he was sated. He murdered many people in view of Tommy's crib and raped or sodomized the rest, but this wasn't what Harry wanted to know.
The views of Tommy, being cared for by the Dark Lord, taught some minor dark spell or treated like a treasured child, were frustrating in view of the other events he was seeing, but in the middle of these was a scene that snagged his eyes and dragged him across the room.
A large bubble hanging from the ceiling was undulating and glowing, while beneath it Voldemort pleasured himself, and it burst open to drop a naked and wet Tommy onto the Dark Lord's lap. He was completely bald, and looked more like Voldemort than he did Draco, and the Dark Lord climaxed onto his thigh before catching him and holding him close. Then, when Tom Marvolo Riddle, had wrapped the blanket Harry gripped in his hands around his newly born son, Harry saw the thing he had most wanted to find.
On the back of Tommy's head, where his hair now grew in thick black curls, was a tattoo of a rune that matched the one that he and Oliver had searched for, for days.
"Harry?" Doctor Rheingold said as he was mesmerized by the vision. He turned to see what the man wanted, and there viewed the last thing he wanted to find. Against the wall, rising from a strip of black cloth that looked a lot like Draco Malfoy's favorite silk shirt, was a scene of torture, where a blond boy of seventeen was locked into a protracted cruciatus curse until his voice gave out and he passed out on the bed. Voldemort proceeded to use a cutting charm to slice away a chunk of the boy's hair, including some of his scalp, and put it into a silver jewelry box. He smiled and turned away, which gave Harry a chill, and put the box on a dresser before casting a spell that levitated the boy's body and created a cocoon around it, lifting up and attaching to the ceiling. When Harry could draw his eyes back to Voldemort he noticed him caressing his bulging stomach and that was when Harry could no longer contain his nausea.
AN: just a short teaser chappie. I'll add more later.
