~The Yule Ball~
A/N: FINALLY—Done. If you don’t know what this chapter is about from the title alone, then I don’t know what to tell you. Also, this still takes place in the fourth book, the Goblet of Fire © J.K. Rowling.
"So, that was the fourth girl in two days Harry~. What kind of girl are you holdin out for?" Ron was looking at him from over a divination text book.
"Sorry?" Harry asked, who had been making up random info for his dream diary.
"I mean--You've been turning girls down left and right for the Yule Ball. Are you looking for something in particular?" Ron clarified, setting the book down now on the common room table.
"O-Oh. That..." It was true Harry had been saying no too many girls lately, but it was simply because he didn’t really fancy girls that much. They were pretty to look at, but it was much like looking at a vase to him. Not that he was going to tell Ron this, since he'd just say Harry hadn’t found ‘the one’ yet.
"Well... I like older... Girls I think." He said, thinking his tastes over for the first time.
"Really? Me too—Like Madame Rosmerta in Hogsmeade. What I would give if I could just get up the nerve to talk to her and not stutter all the time..." Ron said, making curvy shape in the air with his hands as he spoke. It made Harry glad that Hermione wasn’t there—Lest she hit them both for good measure.
"I-I suppose so..." He faltered, never really thinking about the bar woman like that. "Uhm, I also like them to have pale skin..."
The red head looked at him blankly. "We live in England, mate. Were all pale here."
"W-Well I guess that’s true... Okay well I want them to take the lead." He said, reddening, knowing this was very true.
Ron nodded. "I think that falls under the older woman thing, but I'll count it."
Was this some sort of interview or something? "I also like, when they’re protective of me."
Again Ron looked at him funnily "You sound like a girl, Harry.”
"Shut up—You asked!" He retorted hotly, holding back from taunting the other about Fleur.
"Alright, alright. What else?"
"Well... I don’t really mind hair colors. But I think I like dark best." Harry said, having fun leading his friend on about his taste in ‘girls’.
But the other Gryffindor looked thoughtful, "You know, this sounds really familiar. Are you talking about someone specific, Harry?"
This wiped the glee from the seeker's eyes. If Ron caught on to his game, they might fight again. "N-No not at all! H-Hey why don’t we get back to work, we still have a ton of homework left."
"Hrngh, why did you have to remind me...? Alright, but were definitely continuing this later."
They set to work again, Harry releasing a sigh of relief.
So, when the Yule Ball came around Harry went with Parvati—Or was it Padma? Either way, he went with ONE of the Patil sisters…Even though Ron and Hermione had tried to set him up Cho Chang.
"We went with what you said, Harry. Dark hair, pale, older everything." Hermione said when they told him the news.
"Unfortunately, she's already going out with Cedric Diggory." Ron complained—Though he didn’t hate Cedric like he had Tom he still didn’t like the older student. Something about him being ‘the enemy’. This event had led to Harry apologizing to Cedric profusely; explaining that he did not want to steal his girlfriend and that Ron and Hermione had acted alone. It didn’t make a difference to Harry very much who he went with, as long as he didn’t go alone so going with the Patil twin was perfect for him.
While waiting for the ball to begin, he had spotted Cedric and was again jealous and slightly pleased with how handsome he looked in his dress robes. Harry thought he himself looked nice in his own robes—Especially next to Ron, but felt like a child in a tuxedo after seeing the other champion.
They didn’t get a chance to really talk together at that moment, since the ball started at that moment. As he and ParvatiPadma (He still couldn’t remember which one and neither could Ron since they spoke to the twins seldom) danced, Harry again felt the strangest feeling of jealousy when he saw Cho and Cedric together. And then the inevitable confusion as to why he felt it. 'It's just because, I'm not with the person I want to dance with.' Said love sick Harry in his head. Then he wondered in Tom was any good at dancing—This led to him day dreaming again. Which led to whichever twin he was dancing with to hit his arm, because he kept stepping on her feet.
After the obligatory dance, Harry left the great hall to stand outside in the garden confused. It was cold outside, but it felt too hot to stay a moment longer inside when he felt so abandoned. Still, he laughed a little to himself, even when Tom had pretended to be nice he would have made sure that Harry memorized every step of that dance. He wondered if there would have been books stacked on his head to keep his back straight. For every laugh he felt even more lonely when he saw how Cedric had looked so happy being with the person he loved. So why was Harry not sure that even if he was with Tom, if he could smile like that?
He sat among the fairy lights on one of the frozen marble benches, staring up at the perfect night sky. Harry could hear the laughter and the music from inside even from here, and was wishing that he could have just stayed in his dorm tonight.
Cedric was pretty glad that they became quick friends, liking the other boy very much. As a friend, anyways. In the back of his mind he still considered him cute and so on at times but it was those times he'd remind himself that he has a girlfriend and the fact that it was just odd to choose to act on those ideas. Besides, he doubted that the boy even remotely thought of him in that way, especially with all of the girls that seemed to start clamoring to be asked to the Yule Ball. He didn't really bother Harry about it or asked who he was taking, just joked around a little and was glad that at least the other students were being nicer to him.
Of course, when he found out first from Cho that Harry had tried to ask her out and then later from Harry himself who explained that Hermione and Ron tried to set them up, he didn't really mind and said it was alright. Things like that didn't really bother him or he was just too oblivious to it. Either way, he liked his new friendship with the Gryffindor too much to get mad over something petty like his friends trying to set him up with his girlfriend or something. It was all good and fine, no harm done. But he still seemed to like to apologize about it regardless, as if it did bother the older boy some, which Cedric always waved the apologizes off and said, for the millionth time, that it was absolutely fine and he understood. He and Cho had actually been having a bit of difficulty recently but it was nothing too bad. Besides, if there weren't any arguments, then neither side was very passionate at all, were they?
When the Yule Ball came around Cho became a bit happier, at least to Cedric, and he was happy to have her on his arm when they went to start off the ball. Though, it was a bit weird that he was having second thoughts about it. Perhaps it was because of his and Cho's recent small fights that he didn't really feel as comfortable? Either way, he just smiled and took it all in stride, unfortunately having no chance to really talk to Harry before or during the ball much.
When Cho finally wanted a bit to chat with some of her friends, Cedric took this opportunity to say hi to a few of his. He couldn't find Harry and he wondered where he went, asking around before someone finally directed him to outside and he walked out to go look. And there the boy was, sitting on a cold marble bench beside a bunch of fairy lights. The blonde walked over before moving to join him and looked over to him with a small smile.
"Enjoying the ball?" He asked, trying to start up a conversation.
Harry jumped; he had not heard Cedric approaching as he had been lost in thought. How long had he been sitting out here? "Uh, well sort of." He said, trying to feel more positive. "I've just never been any good at big parties, not really my thing." This was partly true, every big party he had ever gone to was for and about his cousin Dudley and he had hated every one of those.
"What about you? Shouldn’t you be inside with Cho?" Harry asked, surprised to see that Cedric was alone on such a very ‘date like’ event. "Or are you hiding?" He added, teasing gently, glancing back to the doors over the older students shoulder.
The Hufflepuff laughed a little at the other boy's questioning. "Oh, no, I'm not hiding. Cho wanted to talk to her friends for a bit and I wanted to say hi to mine so we're taking a bit of a break. And I see, though, isn't it cold sitting out here? It does feel a bit nicer though to be out of that room packed with bodies though." He put, just answering his own question a bit.
Nodding, Harry did notice that is was surprisingly cold now that Cedric mentioned it. "Well, this outfit has a ton of layers to it so it's taken me a long while to get really cold." He muttered, aware that it had taken both him and Ron quite a while to figure out how the bloody robes went on properly. "You’re right though, it's much better out here than in there. I don’t think I've ever seen so many people stay over from Christmas break. It's a little odd." Actually, Harry felt a little annoyed about it. He really liked feeling like he actually just lived at Hogwarts full time—Having so many others around ruined the effect.
Nodding, Cedric glanced back over to Harry again. "Yeah, just don't stay too long out here and catch a cold or something. Not that I'm trying to sound like your mom but it'd suck having to do the challenges sick. And yeah, it is pretty crowded, isn't it? I usually stay behind too, because I'm a prefect and they still need a few of us around. It's nice to have a break from school though, even with so many people around. But hey, at least there are a few little parties to go to in each of the common rooms. I don't know about the other houses but Hufflepuff usually throws a party every once in a while. Mostly around celebrations but they also do random parties during Christmas break just because we can. In fact, we're having one tonight after the Yule Ball if you wanted to come back and stay for a bit, have a drink or two, and leave. Up to you though." He put. He didn't know about Harry but he liked to drink a little here and there. And it was nice for a champion to relax in between tasks, right?
He had been idly watching the snow accumulate on the buses around them as Cedric spoke to him. Yes, some prefects tended to stay over the break he remembered Percy ranting about ‘Keeping order even on break’ or some rubbish; he usually tuned Percy out once he started to talk. Being invited to a party however was something that made Harry a bit--Excited? Probably because it had happened so seldom, and not because it was Cedric inviting him.
It was then that the blonde heard footsteps and glanced over his shoulder, seeing Cho walking outside in her dress with the snow catching in her dark hair and... She looked a tad angry; probably more so at the sudden cold when she had to go outside in order to pull Cedric back in.
She walked over, bidding Harry a small 'hello', and then looked to the blonde a bit irritatingly. "You've been gone for a bit." She put, though it was obvious she wanted to say more. But she didn't, because Harry was in their company.
"You were talking with your friends though, weren't you? I wanted to come say hi to Harry since we hadn't gotten a chance to talk in a while." He put, confused. Why was she like this? Did one of her friends get her riled up suddenly or something? "Is something wrong?"
"No, of course not." She put a bit sarcastically. Her tone and everything would've probably been worse without a bystander there. "I'm just kind of surprised you left me there."
"Well, you were talking to your friends." He put, getting a tad irritated at having to repeat himself. What was up with this? "I wasn't going to take much longer and I would've been back to have another dance with you or talk. You're mad, I can tell. So what is it?"
"Well, never mind. I just don't really want to dance anymore. Someone accidentally spilled something on my dress and I tried looking for you but you were nowhere. It's embarrassing to walk around like this." She put, pointing to her dress.
Cedric leaned in but he couldn't see any mess. "I don't see a spill or anything, you look fine. I guess whatever they spilt on you matches the outfit. But I can take you up to your house so you can cha-"
At this, Cho got angrier. Apparently she didn't like that he said that and started to walk off. "Forget it." She huffed slightly, clearly really irritated and just walking off, holding her dress up some so it wouldn't drag in the snow.
The blonde sat there, so confused and irritated now at being interrupted or treated like that. "What was that about...Man she was angry." He put, looking over his shoulder. He was even offering to walk with her back to the Ravenclaw Tower. He was being nice, wasn't he? He knew he was oblivious but something was a bit up here. He then glanced back to Harry and apologized, forgetting he had been there for a few minutes.
"Sorry about that. Cho and I haven't been getting along too well a week or two before the Ball. I thought her mood lightened up in time for the ball but apparently it soured up real quick. I'm not sure what I'm really doing wrong but... Yeah." Ok, yeah, that drink and the party up at the Hufflepuff common room was looking really nice about now. It wasn't of any use to chase her down or to try and stop her from marching up to Ravenclaw Tower either. She'd probably only blow up on him more. It was best to let it rest for a night and try and apologize to her in the morning or something for whatever it was that he apparently did wrong.
When the door had swung open and closed, Harry felt a slight dread because it was Cho coming out. This was because he still felt very awkward about the whole asking out business, and that her presence meant she wanted Cedric to come back in. It was very awkward after they started to have a bit of an argument while he was there, and he wondered if their sitting so close because the bench was so small had anything to do with her irritation. 'That's stupid, she doesn’t even know about that. Stop feeling guilty.’ He thought, face red. Harry pretended to tie his shoes, straighten his socks, and generally do anything to make it seem like he was not listening.
After Cho had gone back inside he felt a bit bad that he had been there to see their problems. Harry was clueless about how girls worked, but he had winced a bit at the dress remark; messes and dresses never look good together for girls, even when they didn’t show.
"It's fine Cedric; you couldn’t help it… I was already setting here when you had a row. Uhm...I can’t really give you any advice about the fighting I mean, you did alright to me." Lecturing the older boy on how to talk to girls was not something Harry wanted to do and the only relationship he had ever had was with a another boy. "Uhm... About the party—I wouldn’t mind going. It's not like I have anything planned or anything...." He said softly, glad his face was already red from the cold and hid the blush. His idea of drinks was punch and butter beer, so he didn’t quite get the meaning of ‘drinks’ right now.
The older boy smiled a bit to Harry, trying to cheer up after his bit of confusion there with Cho. "Thanks, though apparently it doesn't seem like I'm doing too much right since she's still getting mad. I'll just check on her tomorrow and it'll probably be fine. Anyways, that frees me up. I'm pretty sure that some Hufflepuffs have already left the ball to go back to the party at the common room. It shouldn't be too crowded—There are probably a lot of people still dancing at the ball- but we can go now if you wanted to." He suggested, feeling a tad cold. Though, that was probably from the cold shoulder Cho just gave him after she marched off. Either way, it didn't mean he had to be mopey or sad all night long cause of it. He really hadn't gotten to talk to Harry at all recently and he was determined to spend at least a little time talking to him. So the party was a great idea to him.
"I don’t mind going now. It's got to be better than the two of us sitting out in the cold right?" Harry said smiling back—Just in time he had drawn his hand back from taking hold of Cedric's sleeve. Or was it his hand he had been reaching for? It confused him that he had tried to do something that he had only done with Tom.
He stood up quickly as if this had not happened. "W-Well let’s go before we freeze to death out here! The sooner the better!" Harry said overly enthusiastic; the cold must be freezing his brain.
Cedric caught the little motion but didn't think much of it, moving to stand up as he smiled back to him and nodded, leaving with Harry. He chatted with him, soon glad to be out of the cold; however, it was very warm indoors with all of the bodies moving about in the great hall. At least the temperature should be ok back in the Hufflepuff common room.
He led them on, making light conversation until they arrived, said the password, and allowed the other boy to head on in with him. The room definitely had quite a few people in it, however, nowhere NEAR the amount downstairs participating in the Yule Ball. There was still maneuvering space, plenty of drinks and food available on some tables, and people chatting or dancing and having fun. There were a few other students from other houses so no one really paid any mind that Harry entered. Especially seeing as how he entered with Cedric, which, all the Hufflepuffs liked him so they didn't really question his choice in friends whatsoever.
He headed on over to the tables, grabbing a drink for himself before turning to Harry with a smile. "Pick anything you want and have as much as you like, alright?" He said, trying to let the other boy get comfortable or settled in here with him.
The Hufflepuff common room was filled with a lot more plants and a more natural surrounding than the other houses, as if they were living all in a very large tree that had been carved out into exquisite rooms. The common room in particular opened up quite a bit, a nice fireplace built in just like all the other houses, but it definitely was much livelier in the area with all the plants and happy Hufflepuffs. Even their house ghost, the Fat Briar, was there chatting up some students and only wishing he could devour some of the things on the table that they had set out. Music was playing and everyone was generally in a good mood, occasionally some loud pops were heard as students made something akin to fireworks at the tips of their wands for a bit of entertainment. Cedric would've probably joined in with some of the Hufflepuffs dancing around, however, it wasn't like Harry would dance with him, now would he? Probably as a joke but... He was much more comfortable just sitting down, drinking, and joking around with Potter.
Harry had never been in the Hufflepuff common room so he was surprised by the amount of plant life here. It was a bit busy in here but it was much less formal and though full was much more relaxed feeling. Still he stuck pretty close to Cedric, feeling a little awkward because he wasn’t a Hufflepuff. The tables had some bottles that Harry had never seen before, and it appeared all the butter beer was gone. Tentatively he plucked one of the bottles off of the table that was closest, unaware that it was actually alcohol, and several snacks. He had never quite gotten over being starved by the Dursley’s so he always made sure to take plenty of foods when he could. "Uh, okay! I think this enough." Harry said, loaded down with food and still oblivious to what the bottle was.
Cedric, thinking Harry knew what he was drinking, didn't really question him on it. Pretty much all of the drinks on the table were alcoholic in some way or form so it was hard to actually grab something that was non-alcoholic. He grabbed a snack for himself as well, taking a few bites and drinking the firewhiskey he had grabbed, pretty content. Well, if he had gone back with Cho, she would've probably just griped at him and shut the door on him. It was much more fun to hang out here with Harry and he was relieved with the less stress at the moment anyways. He joked about a little mess-up he had with the first task, nearly having his ass roasted by the dragon, and just making jokes.
Soon enough, through the night, he went through 3 firewhiskeys and he was already feeling quite tipsy, finding things more amusing and leaning slightly here and there. He had definitely moved closer to Harry or grabbed his leg a few times gently to steady himself. He was tempted to ask the boy to dance but then chuckled at his own thoughts. Wow, if he drank any more he'd probably be out of it.
"You having a good time 'ere, Harry?" He put, trying to keep his words straight. Some more people through the night had come in so the room was getting a bit more crowded but the atmosphere was the same as before—Relaxing and fun.
When they had sat down together and Harry had tried his first sip of the drink; he didn’t like it much. It tasted odd, but he wasn’t about to say that after Cedric had been kind enough to invite him up. Still, he had to drink something to get the food down and cool off from the heat in the room. He got used to it and soon had finished the entire bottle. Harry had never been drunk, and had no idea that the bottle was filled with booze so he was clueless. It was difficult to think... In complete sentences. Everything was kind of hazy; he was having fun though with Cedric. Harry didn’t mind him being so close, or grabbing his leg. Why should he everything was okay?
"Ah...yeah course I am...oh. Is kinda crowded now huh...? Is it crowded to you...?" He asked, slightly swaying on the spot, face red.
The blonde chuckled to Harry, moving a hand to grab him on the shoulder and to try and steady him. "Yeah kind of. Hold on you keep swa-There ya go." He put, trying to straighten him up while standing up himself. He was swaying a little to the side though so it looked like Harry was normal from this point.
"We... Uh we can go to a less crowded spot or somethin'." He put, glancing around as more people came in. Yeah, it was getting crowded. He was not only feeling warm from the booze but also from all the bodies now coming in the room and partying.
He grabbed another drink as well as Harry's hand, pulling him towards...Wait where should he go? "Do you wanna go back outside or somthin'?" He asked Harry, feeling a tad tired but nothing too bad. It was just from the alcohol, after all. "We can go wherever." He then chuckled, apparently finding what he just said kinda funny as well as how red Harry's face was getting from the heat of everything combined.
Cedric kept touching him which kept making him all the redder and less sure footed. "Oh… Th-thanks..." He hiccupped half way through his gratitude.
"Uhm... Uhm..." Harry thought it was hard to think right now. "Is all... Cold outside isn’t it? I don... Care but uhm. You decide... It's too hard to decide..." He swayed forward again, this time grabbing Cedric’s arm for balance as they stood. "Y'know you’re REALLY tall. How come I can’t get tall? Is not like I don wanna...." He rambled drunkenly up at the older boy.
Cedric spent a few moments trying to think of where they could go before he chuckled at the boy's rambling. "I run inta things all the time, it isn't all that grand. I'd pick ya up if I weren't afraid of fallin' down stairs or somthin'." He put, moving to leave the Hufflepuff common room now and holding Harry's hand so he wouldn't get lost or fall over or something like that.
He couldn't think of many places to go so he just walked up to the fourth floor, stopping along that hallway towards the prefect baths and sat down in front of the windows. The view was nice and he always liked it. Besides, if someone came then they could just slip behind the curtains beside each window and hide quickly. "Alriight. 'Ere's good I 'pose. If somen' comes then just hide under the uh... Drapes." He put, pointing to them before taking a drink of the firewhiskey and offering it to Harry.
It was a good thing Cedric held his hand because Harry kept getting distracted, almost killing himself on the stairs. When they finally reached their destination, Harry sat directly beside the prefect, something he would not have done if he weren’t so drunk. "Okay... That’s a good idea..." He said, staring at the curtains that had been pointed out to him. He had to take the bottle with both hands so he wouldn’t drop it; the liquid inside burned his mouth and throat making his eye's water a tiny bit. He had dribbled a small amount down his chin and he wiped at it sloppily. "Mngh... This stuff... This stuff is really hot." Harry mumbled handing the bottle back to Cedric; flush still high in his cheeks.
The older boy's eyes caught onto Harry as he drank and he watched a little fall from his lips, his eyes staying a bit longer than they would've ever had he been sober, and he took the bottle back. "Ahh, it should be cold uh-" He put, taking another drink and enjoying the burn in his throat. His eyes moved back onto the other boy however, looking at him.
"Hey, uh." He started, trying to think of the words he was going to say. "I think... I think I might break up with, uh, Cho." He put. Sure, he had quite a lot of friends he could talk to but at the moment he only felt like talking to Harry about this. Harry was the only one, aside from any girls that Cho has told, that knew of the difficulties he was having with her. "Or do ya think I should try... I mean... I dunno..." He felt a little dizzy and put a hand on Harry's leg, as if trying to steady himself even though he was sitting on the ground ok already.
What Cedric had said had startled him a little, not expecting it. Despite the small worry he had over his friend’s dilemma... Drunken Harry felt a little surge of joy. He didn’t know why, since it didn’t really affect him but it was there none the less.
"Yeah..? You… Did say you been fight'n alot. I dunno, if you want to. I mean if you’re not happy er nothin...." He said slowly, trying to use the correct words. "Better to do it before you… Before you get into a big one... Fight I mean...." Harry felt very hot even though the hallway was quite cool. The instant the hand touched his leg he whimpered a little, turning his face away. Why was he... Feeling like this?
Cedric listened as much as he could to what Harry had to say before nodding. "Yeah... I keep thinkin' she's gonna dump me but sheer never does. I, uh, thought it was just gonna all pass over but... I lied earlier when I said only a week or two. It's off an' on. Those two weeks we've beenuh fightin' a whole lot. She blows up over anythin'. I just dunno. I don't think she likes me anymore so muchas she does like keepin' me around cause I'mma champion or somthin'-..." He glanced to Harry and stared at him a bit longer than he would've normally done again. And with the alcohol guiding him, it wasn't hard to let anything he was thinking just slip right out instead of pushing it to the back of his mind.
"Yer face is red." He put, also pointing this out by moving his hand from Harry's leg up to his face to cup a cheek. Yup, his cheeks were pretty warm alright. It felt kinda good on his hands.
"W-Well... What're you staying for then...? If you been fightn so much there aint no reason... To..." Harry said, facing away. He felt really dizzy now. It was a relief to feel the hand move from his leg to his cheek, but not by much.
"I... I know it is..." He mumbled, leaning into the hand a little. It wasn’t cold like Tom's hands had been but were warm and soft; it was a nice change. Thinking of him made him rethink what he said to Cedric a little, "But I know... If you really like someone it's kinda hard... To leave." That was the understatement of the year for their relationship. "Hm... This is nice..." Harry said softly leaning more into the hand, holding it in place with his own smaller one.
The Hufflepuff didn't pull his hand away at all, just holding Harry's face a bit as he blinked to him again, considering something.
"Have... Have you eva been in any relationships, Harry? I neverrr hear you talk 'bout it or see ya with anyon'. E'cept for, uh, Patil I think? I dunno." He couldn't find the exact right words to say at all and he definitely wasn't really concentrating on the scenery so much anymore. Harry's hand was almost like a girl's because of how much smaller he was and... He had to hold back from accidentally letting that thought slip, not wanting the boy mad at him for thinking of him being more girly than more like a man.
This made the lovesick Harry come to a little bit; yes indeed he had been. Was still in? He didn’t know anymore.
"I-I’m not goin out with her, it's just for the ball..." He said to clear up the easy part of the question. It took a bit longer to find the words for the other part; other than Ron no one really knew how far he had gone.
"W… Well... I was... In my second year. But, we don’t... We don’t....I havent seen him----I mean! I havent seen them in a while." Harry rushed past his slip up; true it wasn’t that big of a deal in the wizarding world but he still didn’t want to let it go that he had no interest in girls.
Cedric was pretty surprised with the answer, sobering up a little but not enough. "Wait, him? Not that I have a problem wit' it, I just didn't think you liked guys too..." He put, considering and still holding his hand against the other boy's face. "Why havn't you seen 'im...If you don't mind me askin', sorry..." He put, knowing his curiosity was getting the better of him over this. It was Harry's fourth year so... "...Wow, two years?" He put, surprised that the boy was still dwelling over it. He must've really liked or loved this person... He honestly didn't know himself if he would dwell that long over Cho if they broke up soon which he was thinking about doing.
The idea that Cedric liked boys too made a little jolt go up his spine; it was unexpected. "Y-Yeah, it was a he." He mumbled softly, fidgeting nervously.
"Uhm... Well we had a big fight... I guess. He was a lot different from who I thought he was. After the fight he left and I haven’t seen him since. He hasn’t tried to talk to me, or find me... Or anythin... Really." This was a very general way of saying 'Oh he was actually Voldemort, and when I found out he raped me and tried to murder me and my best friend.' Because even drunk Harry knew better than that.
"Two years, I know." Harry said back to the older boy "It... It probably wouldn ha' worked out anyways, he was a lot older tha me. And we were pretty differen even then. But, even then I really liked bein with im... Even though he was a really bad person. Which made me feel worse." It felt nice to vent his feelings for once even if he was withholding a ton of the details.
In all honesty, Cedric was feeling for the other boy, his smile turning into a bit of a frown now. "Wow. Sounds bad. I 'spose if he's gonna hurt you or anythin' then it's better off him being gone... Sorry 'bout that." He put, unsure of whether or not he should've asked for that much information and not really asking for more now in case it made Harry feel even more worse than he already was. He was curious as to who this person was... An older student or something? Or outside of Hogwarts? He wasn't sure.
"I 'spose it's better it broke up rather tha' an abusive spot you got yourself into." He put, unsure if his words were making sense because the alcohol still had an effect on him. But he was trying to cheer him up, moving the hand away from Harry's cheek and onto his back to rub it a little.
Truthfully, he didn't like boys. Well, at least, he only figured he ever liked girls. But Harry was making him question himself which, at this state of intoxication, it was getting hard to try and separate those thoughts of how Harry should just be a friend or how cute and etc he was. He didn't want things to be uncomfortable. And with Harry it just made Cedric all the more confused. Which, around the time he started hanging out with Harry more, the more Cho started to get mad with him...? Maybe they were related... Ah, oh well. It didn't matter right at this moment.
"Y-Yeah I think so..." Harry didn’t say that he found out only afterwards that, even when Tom was kind to him he made his friends lives hell just for sport. He knew it was stupid to still feel the way he did, though he wished sometimes that he had stayed ignorant so he wouldn’t have to deal with the common sense he had now. Really, he didn’t like being abused; he just wanted it be like it had been when he was 12. He hadn’t had to worry about IF Tom was going to hurt him, IF he was just as bad as him, or IF he was now... Maybe feeling something for someone else. It had just been about making each other happy, he had thought.
The hand moving to his back was a comfort, and he sighed with relief. Harry really did like being with Cedric; he was kind, warm and as far as he knew NOT a dark wizard in disguise.
He leaned closer resting his head on Cedric's shoulder now, smiling again. "S'alright, I've been a little better about him lately..." Well in fits and starts anyways. "Sooooo, you'd tell me if you were a dark wizard if you were one wouldn you, Cedric?" Harry teased, knowing that the older boy would have no idea where this came from.
The blonde didn't mind Harry leaning on his shoulder at all, trying to comfort him, and he was confused with the sudden question that popped out of nowhere. Had he not have been as intoxicated as he was, he probably would've caught the correlation between the two subjects but instead he just laughed some. "No wayyy, I'm no dark wizard." He thought it was funny though before he calmed down his laughter a bit and stared out of the window into Hogsmeade with its lights turning off here and there as the night passed on into darkness outside.
He was pretty comfortable where they were together and the talking had gotten his thoughts about Cho off of his chest... Plus he was sure that the other boy felt relieved after being able to talk to someone else about that person who was so mean to him two years ago. He doubted that Harry had told many people at all about that either. It was great that they could be this close in their friendship.
His eyes moved away from the window however, and onto the younger boy who was leaning onto him. He just looked so.... He couldn't put his word on it, his mind a little fuzzy from the alcohol. Thoughts kept flowing in though, his curiosity peeking its head as he began to wonder just how much he and this other older boy had done, where that older boy was now, why he didn't come after him, and so on. It was confusing but he was trying to keep all that from being questions he accidentally said aloud.
And while he was staring he noticed that his eyes had panned down to lock onto Harry's lips. This made him feel embarrassed but he couldn't pull his eyes away really. Why was he thinking...?
"Hmm, thas exactly wha a real dark wizard would say. So I can tell at all." Harry laughed lightening up again. It wasn’t exactly hard to do with so much alcohol in his system. Actually when he had asked Tom if he really was who Harry thought he was, he had remained silent at first. But he didn’t care right now, he wanted to have fun with Cedric and not worry about what had occurred two years ago.
He followed the older boys gaze to the village below; it looked like a toy from here. Was the abandoned house he dreamed about over the summer down there?' Stop it. I'm not worried about where Tom is.' He thought, annoyed at himself.
After the long silence between them, Harry looked back at Cedric who was busy looking at him. "A-Ah... Is something wrong.....?" He asked curiously; well at least Cedric didn’t look at him like he was something to eat like Tom. Even at their best 12 year old Harry had caught this, but had thought it was adoration instead.
Cedric got a bit embarrassed at being caught by Harry but he couldn't really look away either. "Oh.... Nothing. I just uh." He put before he became silent, confused as to what to say or do. Was it weird that...
"Is it weird that uh..." He started, not being able to separate the thought in his head from falling from his lips. "That I... Nevermin'." He put, looking off and trying to contemplate something through his drunken haze. With Harry being so close to him and probably still staring at him, it made it even harder to think. He looked back again. Dammit.
"Ok... Uh... I know this is gonna be weird, espec' since I'm tech' still datin' Cho even thou' I wanna break it off with her but... Uh... Could I..." Dammit. Dammit dammit dammit. This was so weird for him and he couldn't form the right words of 'kiss you'. And he didn't really want to lose his friendship with Harry either, even though the other boy might not remember this if he was this tipsy as well.
He stared up at Cedric, completely lost on what he wanted; he might have been able to if he wasn’t drunk. It was fun to watch Cedric seem so awkward and all he was doing was looking at him. Harry didn’t know where he was trying to go with this, but he got a strange notion in his head. It felt like when, in his dream he started to call Tom's name even though it would get him into trouble (So far he had gotten away with it though). He had been very aroused then, and now he was very drunk so he wasn’t thinking straight at all. With an innocent smile he leaned up slightly a lightly kissed Cedric with a small ‘Smack’. It was more for a reaction rather than anything else and he laughed after pulling away. "Can you think clearer now?" Harry asked still unaware as to what Cedric had wanted.
The older boy was definitely caught off guard by the sudden kiss from Harry. It was what he had been thinking he wanted and even as Harry pulled away he couldn't help but stare back down at those laughing and smiling lips, wanting more. "U-Uh..." He stammered just a bit, trying to gather up his thoughts and himself again after getting suddenly distracted like that.
"Yeah... Actually..." He began to move closer then, a hand moving up to turn Harry's head just gently towards him, and he kissed him. This time, it wasn't just a little 'smack' of a kiss but something more deep. It was still an innocent one, though a tad off because they were both pretty liquored up, and when he pulled away he breathed quietly while looking towards the smaller boy. Licking his own lips, he wanted more. But he knew it was wrong. Harry probably didn't even want this.
"... S-Sorry..." He managed to get out, really wanting to continue but not doing so in case it freaked Potter out.
Harry had blinked rapidly after he was kissed again, not expecting it. Quickly though, his body reacted to what it had been demanding for several months since the dreams stopped. He relaxed and closed his eyes; if he hadn’t been so drunk he probably would have hit Cedric. But he was lonely and Cedric had been nice to him. This confused him more because all he (Harry) knew about love had been with someone who would have quickly had him derobbed by now. But even though Harry had not resisted, the older boy had pulled away. It was confusing; wasn’t he supposed to start telling him to stop?
He cocked his head to the side after pulling apart, not sure what came next in a situation like this. "You don have to apologize... It—It wasn’t a bad thing..." He said, blushing under the drunken flush. Again, had Harry been sober he would have not allowed anyone but Tom to kiss him, but he wanted to have more of this. He liked being able to easily give his feelings to another without fear of repercussion—Drunk at least.
Cedric was glad he wasn't hit or anything and that Harry seemed to even kiss him back some. It was all awkward and he'd probably apologize and tell him to forget about it later. But he definitely wanted at least a little bit more of kissing those lips before they probably parted for the night... He could blame it on the alcohol... After the other champion said that 'it wasn't a bad thing' he leaned forward to take those lips again in a nice kiss. It was innocent and not too deep at all, not wanting to push the other boy into anything or get too wound up in it, and after a few minutes he pulled away to pant for a bit of air, very softly nipping Harry's upper lip as he pulled away. Even if he was a bit drunk, he was still a good kisser. At least, that's what Cho always said about him.
He wished for more but he caught movement in the corner of his eye and froze up. There wasn't enough time to get behind the curtains or to even try and save Harry. He tried to push the younger boy to a curtain to hide him but it was already too late and Professor Moody had walked up, his wooden leg now echoing on the floor and in Cedric's ears as he yelled at both of them. He of course spotted the alcohol bottle that Cedric had brought and sat on the floor and it sobered the blonde up a lot to be grabbed by collar of his shirt, along with Harry, and pulled onto his feet.
"P-Professor Moody!" He put, his hands moving up to the hand on his collar.
"Save it! I can smell the alcohol on yer breath! Both of you! I don't have enough time to deal with right at this moment, but you will go and report what you have just been caught doing to each of your head of houses tonight and then head onto bed or else I'll make sure I punish you both myself!" He put, apparently angry. He sat them on the ground and even kicked Cedric in the leg with his wooden leg, trying to get them to hurry it up and leave as he went to pick up the firewhiskey to toss it away.
Cedric couldn't argue with a teacher and looked to Harry very apologetically, saddened that they couldn't continue more as well, and bid him a small goodbye when they had to part ways towards their own common rooms to go see about finding their heads of houses. Of course, the head of Hufflepuff was extremely mad when Cedric told her what he had done, being honest and not wanting to get in trouble with Moody for lying, and told her about how he and Potter were just sitting there and he himself was drinking. He luckily kept his prefect status, though he nearly had it suspended for a bit for the alcohol bit and wandering around the school at the wrong hours… Plus he wasn't allowed to go to the next Hogsmeade trip coming up soon. He was forced some homework back (Since all the champions had no homework while they did their tasks) to work on and wasn't pleased with all the heavy essays he had to work on for the day when he hadn't been really focused on the classes too much since he had no work. He only hoped that Harry didn't get punished that much... And also that maybe Harry didn't quite remember them kissing or at least didn't disown him as a friend over it or something. That'd just suck.
The kiss had been just what the lonely part of Harry had asked for, gentle but tempting. Usually when he and Tom kissed, his mouth was so dominated he lost all train of thought and it was for this reason that he (Harry) had little idea what to do other than to open his mouth. With Cedric, he got to give a little, as well as take when he would try something he was gently guided along—Rather than worked over. When they finally pulled away, Harry was extremely pleased with himself and with Cedric. Drunken Harry was not thinking much past what made him feel good, emotionally and physically so at the moment he had no guilt.
But just when he was about to gush his feelings he saw a look of horror cross Cedric's face and he was shoved behind one of the heavy curtains. Then he heard the heavy wooden leg on the stone floor. "Oh crap..." Drunken Harry said, who took these things lightly as he was yanked up by the gnarled man as well. Cedric might have sobered up, but Harry was still dancing with the pink elephants. Vaguely, he knew that he was in deep... Deep trouble but he just waved goodbye to Cedric as they parted ways as if nothing had happened. He had the sense to leave a note for his morning self which was hard to decipher. Harry himself had only a few memories of the night before—And a splitting headache.
Still, he had to tell McGonagall what he did know and that was enough to put the fear of God into him. He had the longest amount of detentions he could remember AND enough lines to make his wrist sound like it was a cement grinder by the time he was done. All he could remember was that he and Cedric had gotten drunk and been out of bounds... And maybe Harry had kissed him once. The guilt that followed him was unbearable.
Riddle paced as he heard the news that reached him from a little birdy within the Hogwarts walls that Harry, the boy he now drew a target on, had been caught drunk and kissing some other boy. Apparently one of the other Champions in the Triwizard Tournament that was coming up.
Naturally, he was livid. He didn't really think he needed to justify his anger all that much either, though Peter kept begging to know why he was being beaten. He didn't tell him. He went to bed quite angry that night, determined to get more anger out on that dream Harry of his.
And, in the dream, he definitely did that. He hurt the other boy a lot, yelling at him never to go near anyone else like that again and that he was his and only his. No one else's. He threatened he'd kill Cedric before his eyes and he even became maddeningly delighted and suggesting that Harry could try and kill him with his own hands if he seemed to enjoy the other boy so much. Jealousy was something that did not set well with Riddle. Harry was marked to be his and only his. He never shared. If he couldn't have him then no one could.
And it was this that slowly seeped into his very being even after the dream had passed and morning had come. He was still angry; though he hid it more even though Peter flinched every time he walked by now. Harry hadn't gotten the message that he was Tom's only and he needed to fix that.
A/N: Peter should know well by now that there doesn’t have to be a reason for the beating. Lol, sorry, that part makes me giggle every time.
