A bit more on Rose in this chapter (don't hate me!)...and let's not forget the old Mrs Malfoy.
More Lucius/Hermione in the next chapter (once I finish writing it).
Narcissa had been watching Ronald Weasley and his two children for the past few days. She had seen that he would not be able to help her, the emotional wreck that he was, capable of nothing more than self-pity and regret. The Potters had taken him under their wing and she had given up any thought of recruiting him for this mission when she heard the youngest Potter child, Lily, ask him, "Do you still love Aunt Hermione?" and his response a sentimental, "Love's a strange thing Lily. Try not to grow up too fast!"
No. He would not be able to help her in seeking revenge against the Mudblood and her foolish husband.
She still could not believe he had cheated on her with Hermione Granger. That was insult on top of injury. She had hoped Draco would take her side but, after being her initial shoulder to cry on, he had urged her to give, "Father and Granger a chance".
She had left his house then and was currently staying in a dingy hotel room on top of the Wizards and Witches Bar. It was unsavoury but she got privacy and no one seemed to recognise her. Either way, it was her abode until she managed to get her husband back.
She had looked at Hugo, the youngest Weasley boy but he was as placid and calm as his father, not seeming to hold a grudge against his mother for the injustice she had done to him…and Narcissa of course! That could not be forgotten!
Narcissa Black would NOT be defeated by a Muggle-born witch with unfortunate magical talent.
It was on a walk to Hogsmeade for some provisions that she saw the young girl, clutching an envelope and making her way back to Hogwarts. Rose Weasley.
Now, she looked angry. Narcissa noted her features, set in a firm line as she practically stomped her way across the snow-covered path.
"Possibly", Narcissa had muttered to herself, allowing a thin smile to cross her face for the first time since being evicted from the Manor, "She might be the perfect weapon". She would do her research. This golden opportunity would not go to waste!
Narcissa Black would become Narcissa Malfoy again- whatever the costs!
Rose Weasley had put a large amount of effort into not thinking about her parents. Especially her mum…and her current marital status.
She couldn't think of her as Hermione Malfoy. She was HER mum and she had been the last one to be told! Rose had owled Hugo as soon as she had gotten back to Hogwarts, having read the entire story from her mother's point of view.
She was less than pleased with Hugo's response- a tentative note, entreating she give their mum a chance.
"She's happy Rose. Really happy", he had written, his childish scrawl filling the page, "Almost like Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny. He makes her happy. Why would you want to take that away from her?"
Rose hadn't bothered with a reply, her silence letting her brother know she did not agree with his view. "What would he know about happiness?" she muttered to herself now, as she sat in the library, working on a roll of parchment for Potions.
Why did she even bother? Only a Slytherin would be given a good mark in that class!
This called to mind thoughts of a particular Slytherin. The one who lived to make her miserable. Scorpius Malfoy.
Almost as soon as the thought crossed her mind, she heard his drawling voice behind her, "Weasley". This was his way of greeting her and it was agitating to realise she had gotten used to it.
"What do you want Malfoy?" she spat out, her already bad mood worsening. He came around and sat across the table from her. Even more surprising, he was alone.
Usually there were a large gang of fellow housemates with him, to egg him on while he picked on her.
"I don't recall asking you to sit", Rose said now, her voice cold. Scorpius just raised an eyebrow and smirked at her before saying, "It's a good thing Malfoys don't need permission".
She gave him a glare, remarkably similar to the ones her mother gave, and returned to her work. "So…", Scorpius started, ignoring her frustrated sigh. His father had told him to talk to her after updating him of his grandfather's marriage. Scorpius hadn't minded too much. It was his grandfather's life after all!
"I hear we're related now", he threw the words at Rose now. He could see her eyes were filled with tears that she was trying to beat back with sheer will. Scorpius had no idea how to deal with emotional situations so he fell back on what he did best. Arrogance.
"A pity really", he had barely said the words when he felt a fist connect with his nose, causing him to howl in pain.
"We are NOT related. Got that?" Rose hissed at him before looking down at her swollen knuckles.
Scorpius held his tongue. No use in provoking her further.
Rose stared at him for a second as he stared back, one hand still held to his nose to stop the blood flow. She took out her wand and reluctantly muttered a charm to stop the bleeding. "You should get that checked out at the hospital wing", she muttered turning to leave but stopped short as she felt Scorpius grab her hand.
She turned around with a glare. "Once not enough Malfoy?" she asked, her voice starting to shake. She just wanted to leave and cry in peace. Her whole world was falling apart!
"You need to get that treated too", he said, sparing her hand a glance.
"Why do you care?" tears were spilling down her face now and there was nothing she could do to stop them.
"I guess…I just…" Scorpius took a deep breath. Better to get it over and done with. "I know this must be hard for you. I mean…I'm not thrilled your part of the family either but it could be worse", he paused, waiting for the next punch but it never came.
Rose was staring at him again and her voice was back under control when she asked, "How?"
He gave her a small smile, "One of the Parkinsons might have wrangled their way into the family tree. At least you have brains". She chuckled. They had never had a proper conversation before, she realised as he fell into step beside her, walking towards the hospital wing.
"So what are you now? My step-nephew?" Rose teased him as they walked together. "Alright Weasley. Let's make a deal. We're like siblings okay? Just…not at school".
Rose nodded. It was a weird idea but at least her school life would have a semblance of normality. "Deal", she agreed.
"Will you forgive them?" he asked her, blushing as he realised it was probably personal but Rose smiled slightly. He was almost as relentless as Hugo with his curiosity. "Maybe…she'll always be my mum. If he makes her happy…I might be able to learn to live with that", she whispered the last part.
Scorpius gave her shoulder a friendly pat, surprising her. He really meant this sibling thing! "You'll learn. That's one of the few things you're good at", he added, smirking and running ahead before she could think of a retort.
Rose shook her head. Yes. Exactly like her brother…but he would always be a Malfoy.
