Chapter 16
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi. Thanks, woman, you're the best!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will be deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Sitting in the kitchen with Harry, Sirius held him close. Though he seemed mostly calm, Snape and Remus thought it best to give them some time alone so the young man could destress. That's what they were working on.
Straddling the bench, Sirius had Harry facing him, one arm wrapped around the young man and the other hand stroking his head. Feeling Harry hold onto him, he just continued to do that. Quietly, he asked, “Do you want Elliot, Harry?” So far, the stuffed dragon was still in his godson's pocket. He assumed that Harry hadn't wanted Snape and Remus to see him holding the stuffed animal the way he did when he was stressed or upset.Leaning against Sirius, eyes shut, Harry nodded. He really did. Despite how strange it would seem to so many, holding Elliot calmed him down in ways he couldn't explain. He just didn't want anyone to see him cuddling onto him was all.“It's safe to take him out and hold him. Snape and Remus won't come back in until we give the all clear,” Sirius told him gently, continuing to stroke his head.Nodding again, Harry still clutched onto Sirius with one arm, but fished in his pocket and pulled Elliot out. Tapping the dragon on the nose so he grew back to his normal size, he sighed contentedly when the stuffed animal scrambled up his chest and began to cling to him, its head nuzzling under his chin. Wrapping his free arm around the dragon, his eyes slid shut. That felt good. He was feeling better than he had been, honestly. Between Lucius holding him right after and Sirius now, he was definitely feeling more relaxed, but this still made things more manageable when it came to what he was dealing with.Continuing to stroke his godson's head, Sirius gave him a kiss on the temple. Softly, he said, “You did the right thing, Harry. It wasn't easy, I know that, but I'm proud of you for doing it. We can now work from here with what's been done. That will get us all what we want, especially you.” Feeling Harry nod, Sirius pressed on, “Though it might make you uncomfortable, can the three of us in the house watch the memory of what went on? That way we know what we're working with when it comes to Albus.”Thinking that over, Harry asked, clutching Elliot close, “Those memories—will you be able see those if I didn't watch them?”“No,” Sirius told him firmly with a shake of his head. “We won't see or hear anything from those if you didn't observe them.” Lowering his voice, he said, “And, honestly? If you did see those, I couldn't watch anyway. I doubt Snape or Remus would be able to either. That's more than we could handle.”Thinking it over as he heard and felt the reassuring beat of Sirius' heart, Harry thought he could handle them viewing that mess. After all, it wouldn't be worse than what happened the other night. Nodding slowly, he said, sighing, “Alright, I'll let you.” Thinking it over quickly, he then added, “When you're done, there's something that I want you to watch alone, just you, no one else. You'll understand why when you see it.”Though curious about that, wondering what it could be, Sirius told him, “That's fine. I will. Is it something that happened in court?”
“No, after we were done,” Harry told him, shifting around slightly, pressing tighter to his godfather. Now even more curious, Sirius nodded, but didn't question any further. Instead, he said, “Just to make it clear here; the only reason we want to see them is so we know what we're doing when it comes to dealing with Albus. As we weren't there, he could spin it however he wants. This way he can't. We plan on telling him the truth; that you let us see the memory. That should derail whatever screwed up scheme he has.” Feeling Harry nod, he then asked, “Did you get copies of the paperwork?”“It's in my pocket,” Harry told him softly.“Good. We're going to need that too. I'm not sure when the shite is going to hit the fan here, but it will and I'm sure it's going to involve a meeting of some kind. He has to be fumbling right about now,” Sirius said, running his fingers through Harry's hair.“It is and it's tonight,” Harry told him, relaxing more.Looking down at his godson, bewildered, he asked, “How do you know that?”Snickering a little, a small grin on his face, Harry told him, “When you see that other memory you'll understand.”
Now more curious than ever, Sirius said, “Alright.” Thinking it over, he then said, tone distracted, “If there is a meeting tonight, we need to prepare, that's for damned sure. Snape, Remus and I will have to get together and work out how to do this.” Sighing, trying to think, he mumbled, “I wonder if he or Arthur can mention what they saw outside of court. I don't know about that. We might have to get hold of Lucius to see if he does. There are odd spells on courtrooms when it comes to dealing with minors.” Looking down at Harry, he said, “We'll stay this way for a while then get to it. If there is a meeting tonight, we're going to have to figure out what to do as we have no clue how to go about this.”Saying nothing, Harry nodded again, liking how it felt. He would feel fine soon and be able to handle it. For now, he just wanted this to continue.Sitting there, holding tightly to Harry, who was eating, Sirius was watching the memory play out in the viewing Pensieve. Though he didn't like most of what he was hearing, thankfully he wasn't blindsided by the majority of it. The upside, though, was seeing the expression on some faces as they were slapped, hard, with reality, not to mention watching Albus being Silencio'd and stuck to his chair. Snickering, a huge grin on his face at Albus' expression during the part where Harry told the court just how he felt about the man, he gave his godson a squeeze and said, “That was just perfect, Harry.”
“It's the truth,” Harry told him with a shrug after swallowing his mouthful of food.“Which makes it even better,” Snape said with a huge smirk. “Even Albus can't argue with that. You fought that potion with everything you had, it's readily apparent, and couldn't negate the effects the way some can. I don't think he's going to be able to delude himself for long that's what you meant.”“He's going to try though,” Remus sighed, shaking his head, though pleased with how Harry's solicitor managed to pull this off.Snorting, Sirius said, “Let him. Just let him try to spin it with us. We have the source and he tells us that it's the truth.”“Exactly,” Snape said pointedly.Observing the memory of the bit in the cemetery during Voldemort's resurrection, Sirius rubbed his eyes and gave Harry a squeeze. Just watching that was hard. He didn't even want to imagine how hard it was to live through for Harry. However, he said, “I am going to love to hear how Fudge spins this part. Albus will be happy with it, no doubt there, but I'm not going to count on this getting out anywhere.”“Madam Bones was there. She's going to ensure that information gets into the right hands,” Remus said pointedly. “Fudge doesn't play with her, we all know that. She's going to get Rufus involved from there. It might not come out right away, but it will. Someone, somewhere, is going to leak this. Not to mention it's going to send Peter scurrying for cover. This will only help a lot of matters.”“They will try to cover it up for a while, but if this gets into the right hands, they won't be able to for long. Then all hell will break loose,” Snape told them, liking what he was seeing.Watching the last part play out, including that the memories went to Madam Bones, Sirius then stopped the memory and gave it back to Harry. “That was perfect. Just perfect! And it gives us everything we need to work with Albus.” Sirius said, giving Harry a squeeze. Looking at his godson, he said, “We need those copies. Not sure how we're going to do this, but we will. You've given us everything we need to spin Albus in circles, then kick him in the direction we need him to go.”Pulling the papers out of his pocket, Harry tossed them on the table then looked at Sirius, waiting. When Snape picked up the papers and began to look through them, Sirius said, “Alright, what is it you want me to see?”Pulling the memory of the time alone with Lucius, Harry just grinned a little.Seeing that look, Sirius, too, grinned then said, “This should be good. Alright, give me a few.” Pulling the Pensieve closer, he plunged his face into to watch.“Harry, if you don't mind—what's in that memory?” Remus asked gently. “I assume it happened after the session.“Just—something with Lucius,” Harry told him, smiling a little.Smiling a little himself, Remus nodded, not asking any more.Tossing the papers on the table when he was done looking at them, Severus said, “We now have everything we need to get what we want here. The question is how to do it. That I'm not sure about.” Looking at the young man seated across from them, he said, “Let Lupin and I work with this for a while and see what we can come up with. You look like you could use a rest, Harry.”“I'm tired,” Harry admitted, rubbing his eyes. “I didn't sleep well last night, what with this crap coming.”“Understandable,” Severus nodded. “When Black gets done there, why don't you two retire to get some rest. We'll see what we can come up with here then get with the two of you and work with it.”Harry was about to say something when Sirius pulled his face out of the Pensieve. Seeing the grin there, he chuckled, grinning a little himself. Leaning against his godfather, he put the memory back when it was given to him.Kissing Harry on the head, he then whispered, “That was good. See? I told you he would be there for you.” Looking up, he said, “There will be a meeting tonight, probably here. Lucius overheard Albus telling Arthur. So, we need to work with this, fast.”Running Black through what he just said to Harry, Snape then added, “I would suggest that, if you can, you get in contact with Lucius. He saw the whole thing from a different perspective. Not to mention he's good at coming up with plans that can help. He may have something that can aid us.”“Damned good idea!” Sirius said firmly. “I will. If nothing else, he can pass it to me and we can go from there.” Looking at his godson, he asked, “Is there anything else you think we should know about that could help?”Thinking it over, Harry quickly gave a rundown of the conversation with Mr. Weasley on the way home. Shrugging, he said, “I'm not sure if that'll help or not.”“It might,” Remus told him, looking pleased. “Arthur is a good man. If he said he wants a chance, he'll do it. It may work well for us if he plans to put you first. At the very least, it may take that option out of Albus' hands.”Remembering the tone of the Weasley patriarch's voice and the look on his face when they came in from court, Severus agreed. “Let's see what he has to say. He got a hard slap of reality. That might put him in line with us, slightly, and he may not want to play along with whatever Albus wants.”“Alright, you two see what you can come up with for a plan and let me and Harry get some rest. If you need anything, just come up,” Sirius said. Standing when he saw the two nod, he patted Harry on the back then ushered him upstairs so they could both get some rest. Harry would probably sleep as he had a restless night, but he would just lie down and try to think. Between all of them, they would come up with something and get what they wanted.
Watching Amos pacing in front of her desk, snarling and shouting, Amelia just leaned back in her chair and clasped her hands in front of her, waiting. By this point in her career, she was used to dealing with solicitors so she knew that the great ones, people like Amos, had a flair for the dramatic and theatrics when it came to issues with their clients. They knew just what they were doing and it came into play. Though part of this was a show, she was sure the man was furious, rightfully so. Now she just had to wait for him to finish his diatribe for them to get to the heart of the matter and move on from there.
When he finally calmed down slightly, though still red in the face and right furious, she asked, quietly, “What is it you want, Amos? Tell me and we'll work from there.”Though calm in court, something that was required, that didn't mean that Amos had liked dealing with the reality of what happened to his client or hearing, and seeing, it the way he did. That always put things in a perspective you couldn't prepare for. Stopping, facing the desk, he glanced to Amelia then to Rufus, who was standing against the wall, leaning against a filing cabinet. Huffing, trying to calm his tone, he said, “Plenty. There is plenty here that I want to try to set this mess to rights and get justice for my client.”“Completely understandable,” Amelia told him softly with a nod. “Let's hear what they are then work from there. Rufus and I are going to probably have some things we need to ask you as well.”Pulling out the folder of paperwork Harry had signed, Amos finally seated himself then began to go through the parchments. Distractedly, as he sorted, he said, “Let's start with measures for my client to protect himself then go from there.” Pulling out the relevant forms, he started handing them over. “The first one is a variance to allow my client to do magic outside of school. With what was proven in court today, it's readily apparent that Mr. Potter needs to protect himself. That needs to involve the use of magic without having to worry about another trumped up charge like what we dealt with today. I don't trust that such a debacle won't take place again as there is something decidedly dung smelling about what happened. We won't even delve into other parts other than to say the name Vernon Dursley.” Stopping, he looked at Amelia and waited.Looking over the standard form for that, Amelia grabbed her quill and signed it without even asking questions. This was a very clear case of a young man that was on his own with so much and needed to protect himself. Notarizing it, she made the standard amount of copies and pushed one back to Amos. “Done. It's now valid. The Trace should be gone in an hour. What else do you want, Amos?”Producing the next form, he pushed it to her and said, “I'm filing for supervised emancipation. I want a hearing set up as fast as we can get one. I don't care what Albus Dumbledore spouts about Blood Wards, family or whatever else. My client is not going back to that—place. No! I have two people willing to take on the supervisory position and my client has plenty of places to stay that are safe. With the money left to him by his parents, he also has no issue taking care of the normal matters adults tend to. He cannot go back to that home, that's all there is to it. The sexual abuse stopped, but what we all saw tells us that it's still an abusive environment. If Vernon Dursley learns what was just presented in court, there may be retribution yet again. No, he needs to be removed. As Mr. Potter has made it clear there are very few people he trusts, and with his name being so well known, I don't want to take the chance of putting him in a position where he may end up used by various parties.” Stopping, he waited for the reaction.Looking at the form, seeing the names of the two mentioned, Amelia rubbed the one eye not containing the monocle then sighed. “I agree; he can't go back there. I also agree that this may be the way to go, what with some of what we saw. Your client also has ample means to take care of himself. My issue here is the two people mentioned. One is a werewolf and the other is a former Death Eater. This is going to raise all kinds of suspicions when it comes out, Amos. Are you sure about these men?”“I am completely sure,” Amos told her firmly, nodding. “Mr. Lupin was a friend of Mr. Potter's parents from the time they were in school. They trusted him around my client when he was an infant. That should be more than enough. Right now, Mr. Lupin is staying full-time in the house Mr. Potter is residing in. My client trusts him. I've also come to an arrangement for the nights before, of and after the full moon for Professor Snape to come in. It won't be an issue. As for Severus Snape; the word former is applied to Death Eater.”“You heard my client in court, Madam Bones. He said Severus Snape is one of the few people in that school he trusts. I've seen them together. He does. Severus Snape is a teacher in a school full of children. Though his reputation is one that warrants raised eyebrows, my client is very comfortable with him. If there were problems with Severus Snape and he was that untrustworthy, the Board of Governors would have thrown him out years ago. They haven't. His past is that; the past.” Amos said firmly, looking at her.Taking that in, Madam Bones looked at the document, shaking her head. Hearing Rufus clear his throat, she asked, looking in his direction, “Yes?”“There were others James had listed in his will to take care of his son if the worst happened. Why not one of those?” Rufus asked. Having overseen James when he worked as an Auror, he was aware of some areas when it became apparent the danger the two Potters were in.Leaning back, crossing his legs, Amos said, “And that is another problem entirely.” Seeing the confused looks shot in his direction, he explained, “I can't find James and Lily Potter's wills. I can find they were filed and everything legal was done, but nowhere can I find the wills themselves or learn if they were properly enacted. It's as though they vanished off the face of the earth the night the two died. If I had the list that they made of who my client would have gone to, I may be able to work with it. I don't have that. Of course, I'm trying to find where the dratted things went to, but that's taking time and I keep end up being run in circles while I'm looking.” Lowering his voice, he said, “This is fishy, that's for certain. Both Mr. Lupin and Professor Snape made it clear that Lily would not have sent her son to her sister. Mr. Lupin told me that Petunia Dursley was never mentioned as someone that could take my client. Professor Snape grew up close to the two sisters. He said, clearly, that Mrs. Potter knew what her sister was like and was unlikely to subject her son to that. Which tells me that something is amiss here as well. I'll keep looking, but I'm not sure when, or if, I can find the wills. This is the best I have to work with and it's something all parties involved have agreed to.”Making a note on some parchment, Amelia said, distracted, “I'll have a couple members of the DMLE see what they can find on the topic of the wills. At this juncture, with all that's gone on, I'm not sure your client would accept some of them. So, let's do this; I'll set up a hearing next week to adjudicate this matter. If I hear from Mr. Potter's own mouth that he trusts both of them enough and get their assurances, under oath, that they will oversee the young man to the best of their ability with no agenda, I'll sign it. Will that work for you, Amos?”“It does,” Amos told her with a nod, smiling grimly. “Set up the time and date then we'll be there.”“I'll send an official notice tomorrow,” Amelia told him, leaning back once more. Motioning for him to go on, she waited to see what was next.
Early in the afternoon, after taking a nap, Harry was sitting up in bed, leaning back against Sirius, as they talked to Lucius with the mirror. The man had contacted Sirius while he was still dozing about what had gone on so Sirius was going to take the opportunity to pick his brain on what they should do about the situation and get an idea of what they might be able to use.
Sipping one of the sodas from his stash of snacks, Harry was relaxed, more than he had been all day. For the first time, Lucius was actually seeing him dressed in one of the sets of pajamas with the feet. In reality, it didn't bother him as much as he thought it would. He supposed that had to do with the fact that he, himself, was more comfortable with the whole scenario now. Not to mention the fact that Lucius was the one that bought them for him. Listening in, he was following what was said, but not adding much as the two were trying to work with the Dumbledore part, something he wouldn't be involved with. When the two had switched to suggestions on how to work with what was presented, Harry looked up, brow furrowed, when there was a knock at the door. Glancing over his shoulder at Sirius, he waited to see what his godfather was going to do.Casting the spell to identify who it was, assuming it was Snape and/or Remus, he determined it was both then looked at Harry, saying, “It's the two of them, which means they probably need to talk to us.” Glancing at Lucius in the mirror, he added, “And it might be a good idea for them to sit in on this. Between all of us, we might get a better feel for what to do tonight.”Tensing up, looking down at his pajamas and Elliot, Harry's eyes widened, not sure what to say.Giving Harry a squeeze, Sirius said, tone soothing, “Nothing to worry about. They aren't going to say a word to you about anything, trust me.”“Besides, the pajamas are ones you can find in normal shops,” Lucius added, smirking. “They are actually quite popular with adults as they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Nothing odd, I assure you, Harry.” Shaking his head, he added, “I bought Draco a pair as well. Though they don't have the same designs on them yours do.”Sighing, rubbing his eyes, Harry nodded. He would work with this. After all, it would take too much time to get him changed and it might be something important.Giving Harry's stomach a reassuring rub where he had his hand resting, Sirius reiterated, “Nothing to worry about.” Casting the spell to open the door, he leaned back and waited.Walking in, the two quickly conjured chairs and seated themselves, saying hi to Lucius.Looking at them, Sirius mouthed 'not a word' then, after seeing them nod, asked, “Something up?”“Well, a couple things, actually.” Holding up two letters, Remus then added, “These just came for Harry. One is the Hogwarts letter and the other from his solicitor. We thought that might be important and help us with what we're going to do tonight.”“We also got the 'official' word that there is a meeting tonight, here, at seven,” Snape added, leaning back and crossing his legs. “Albus imparted it was of vital importance, which means he's in some kind of knots over what happened.” Glancing at the mirror, he nodded to Lucius and added, “Which means we probably need to figure something out, quickly, so we can get all the gremlins out of the plan.”Taking the letters from Remus, Harry opened his Hogwarts one first and scowled when he pulled out the Prefect badge. Shaking his head, tossing the letter on the bed, he asked, holding up the badge, “How do I reject this?”Looking at what the young man was holding, Severus snorted then said, tone laced with sarcasm, “I don't see this as a coincidence. Hold your wand on it and say reject. It'll then go to the next on the list.”Doing that, Harry was pleased when the badge then vanished. Shaking his head, knowing that badge was just a way for the old goat to curry favor with him, he looked at the letter from his solicitor. Opening it, he held the folded parchments in one hand while reading the cover letter. Grinning, he began to chuckle, nodding.Looking over Harry's shoulder, though not reading what was in the letter, Sirius asked, “What's that?”Finishing the letter, he began to open the parchments and looked through them. Skimming the first one, he handed it over his shoulder to Sirius and said, “That's my variance for doing magic outside of school. It's official.” Looking at the next one, he then glanced around and said, “This one is the official filing for the supervised emancipation. They are setting up a hearing for next week.” Handing that back to Sirius, he pressed on, reading. When he finished, he held up the others, “Those are for not only a civil suit against anyone that took money from my vaults without permission, but to prosecute them, the DMLE formal investigation into the failure to report the abuse, an investigation by the DMLE into where my parents wills are and to prosecute my family for what was done.” Stopping, he held up the final one and added, tone almost gleeful, “This is the official presentation to Madam Bones to have me homeschooled, though it's not officially filed and won't be until after the emancipation hearing.”Laughing, Sirius shook his head as he read through what was handed to him. “Oh, Harry, I love your solicitor! We can keep hold of these, right? Albus is going to have kneazles when he sees this shite!” Passing them to Snape, who was smirking hugely, he looked at Lucius who appeared to be smug. “This is great!”“Yeah, you can keep hold of them.” Harry chuckled, sipping his soda, still grinning.“Amos is wonderful,” Lucius conceded, smirking bigger. “He handed you everything you'll ever need. Oh, to see the look on Albus' face when he gets a gander at these! And they are official no less. Absolutely perfect.”Reading over Severus' shoulder, smiling, Remus said, looking at Harry, “We'll be there when the hearing is set up, don't worry about that.”Snorting, pleased with what he was reading, Severus nodded, adding, “We will, Mr. Potter. If your solicitor managed to get as far as to set up a hearing, you'll get what you want out of it. It's just a formality.” Handing the papers over to Lupin when he was done, Severus relaxed, crossing his arms over his chest. Looking around, he said, “I think the whole operation just got infinitely easier on all of us. Those official documents are going to drive Albus into a right panic and guide him where we want him.”Handing the letter that came with the documents over to Sirius, Harry chuckled. For the first time that day, he was very happy with what had gone on.Reading what was in it, liking that Carthwaight had worded it in a way that didn't show that the man might know they were going to use it for something, Sirius said, “Oh, this is just what we need. He is taking after everyone and making it clear he's going to go through legal channels to do it. He's also detailing just what he said to Madam Bones about all of it, including where it involves me. The wills—he's still looking, making it clear he thinks there is something wrong with the situation there and that Madam Bones, herself, assigned the DMLE to look for them.” Looking up, he said, “I'd bet my magic Albus had something to do with that and doesn't think anyone would think to go hunting.” Looking down, he snorted, grinning again, “And he's mentioning civil suits against Albus and Pomfrey for failure to report. The Board of Governors is mentioned as well as they oversee such matters. That will send everyone scrambling as the DMLE has those memories.”“Utterly perfect,” Lucius said looking entirely pleased. Leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees, Lucius said, “From what I see here, the major thing you need to do is ensure that you keep to your assigned roles and act like you normally would in such situations. Though there is an agenda, you need to act like there isn't one. I would suggest, Severus, that you be the one to bring up the homeschooling as a solution. You are one that I don't think Albus realizes is so close to Harry. That means he would see you as objective since he fails to realize you are not in line with what he wants.”Listening intently, feeling much better about what they were about to do, everyone began to work through a plan on just how to lead the old man to water and get him to dive in head first.
