Chapter 16
Remus had been so intent on going through what Gringotts had just sent him about the house they were in the middle of buying that he didn't hear the kitchen door open. It wasn't until Little Paws put a paw on his leg and gave a soft bark that he realized that he wasn't alone. Jumping slightly, startled, he looked down at the small dog and smiled. Chuckling, he reached out and rubbed his head, saying, “You scared me.” Picking Harry up, he held him close, stroking his back as he kissed him on top of the head. Seeing the small dog look up at him, tail wagging, he shook his head then added, tone one of amusement, “I wasn't paying attention, I know. My fault.” Settling Harry into a comfortable place on his lap, he asked, though knew he wouldn't get an answer, “I take it Sirius will be down shortly?” Hearing a soft bark and taking that as a yes, he pressed on, “Good. I need his help, and yours, with some of this.”
Putting his front paws on the table, Harry stood then looked at the papers scattered all over, nose twitching, as he tried to figure out what this was and what kind of help Remus needed.
Picking up a couple pictures of the front room from the new home they were buying, Remus showed them to the small dog. “They want to know the color schemes we want. Of course, we could tend to that ourselves when we move in, but, as they are taking care of all the modifications we want, this is something they're doing at no extra charge. I thought it best they take it on. So, we just need to come up with something. The same with other rooms. All three of us are going to be living there, so I thought it best we decide together what we want.” Pointing to the one that had brown tones, he said, “I thought this one. It's rather neutral in color.”
Eying the picture, Harry got a disgruntled look on his face then glanced up at Remus.
Eyebrows going up, Remus smiled then asked, “You don't like that one?” It was then he waited. Even in this form, Harry had issues with 'voicing' an opinion on anything. He could play, muck about, whatever, but when asked for an opinion, something he could either nod or shake his head to, he had issues. Now he wanted to see what would happen. There had been progress with the bond and Harry since Sirius had come up with the one way to work with it. It hadn't been much, but it was there, something that had all of them hopeful that they could get this moving quicker. This might be a good time to see how much progress was being made. It would be easier to do it as Little Paws than normal, so if Harry could manage, it meant they were going about it the right way.
Eyes drifting back to the picture that Remus had held out, Harry gazed at it while that war inside him went on. After a minute or so, he shook his head. No, he didn't like that color. With that he felt relief as he was able to actually 'voice' a real opinion, something he hadn't been able to do since the night Dumbledore came over.
Grinning, Remus petted him, pleased with this. He then asked, “Which one do you like?” Grabbing several others, including ones that he had already discounted as just not fitting their personalities, like the pinks and more floral colors, he waited to see what Harry would do. Whatever Harry picked was what they would do just because it came down to Harry had finally been able to make a choice in something. As Harry wasn't the sort to pick something outlandish, it would go fine.
Gazing at the pictures there, something that showed the same scene though they were in different colors, Harry's eyes kept drifting back to the one he liked the best. What it came down to, though, was actually pointing it out because that was him voicing an opinion. Even though he had done it once, doing it again didn't make it any easier. Feeling that war still going on, he shut his eyes and let out a sigh. As he did, though, a paw that was shaking slightly lifted. Opening his eyes once more, he pawed at the soft grey colored scheme. That was the one he wanted. There was something soothing about the light grey tones that he liked. With that, though, there was immense relief, like a weight had been lifted off him. It felt good to actually make a choice again!
Sitting the picture aside that Harry picked, Remus put the others down then picked Harry up, holding his close. Petting him, he kissed him on top of the head then said, smiling as he did, “We'll go with that color. Good choice. It's one I was looking at anyway.” With that, he was pleased as hell and planned to tell Sirius what Harry had managed. If Harry could make a choice in this form, he probably could in his other as well. Perfect. That showed real, true progress.
Still holding Harry close with one arm, he picked up the picture Harry had chosen and looked at it again. Quietly, he said, “I do like this, honestly. Maybe we can do shades of it through the whole house. As it's neutral enough in color, we could do whatever trim we wanted with it, well, save a few. Let's see what Sirius thinks about that idea.”
Looking back at the picture, Harry gave a soft bark, tail wagging. He felt good now that he could actually make a choice about something.
Setting the picture aside then pushing the rest into a pile with one hand, Remus held Harry close. Looking down at him, he smiled, “If we get the color schemes out of the way this morning, we can start going through the furniture catalogs and decide what we want with that. The faster we pick it out, the sooner they can get done.” Of course, it went without saying that the quicker it went, the faster they could move from this place. He then glanced up as the door opened, smiling as Sirius came in.
Taking a seat by the two, waiting for Harry to settle down perched on both their legs, Sirius asked, taking a drink from an elf, “What are we doing?” Glancing around at what was scattered there, he then snorted, figuring it out partially, and grinned, saying, “Decorating shite?”
“Yes, Sirius.” Remus chuckled. After going through the bit about the goblins, he said, “Harry picked out a very nice color scheme. I think it can work for the whole house.” Shoving the picture over to him, he added, “We just want your opinion. If you can deal with it, I'll send it off to the goblins then we can press on.”
Looking at the grey colored room in the picture, Sirius then glanced down at Little Paws, who was gazing up at him, before looking at Remus, then asked, “Harry picked this one?”
“He did,” Remus affirmed with a nod and smile. “He didn't like the brown one I chose.”
“We'll go with that one,” Sirius told him, grinning hugely. Oh, hell yes that was good! They were moving the right way and that they needed. It just meant pushing it a bit further, something he could easily do.
“Good,” Remus told him, making a note on the sheet that came with the pictures that would tell the goblins what they wanted. As long as the rooms were done the right color, they could easily add any trim they wanted to match the furnishings they would pick out. Sending that bit off, he vanished the pictures that came with it, then picked up the catalogs for the furniture. Looking between the two, he said, “The furniture I do need your help with. Not so much the colors, though I would like some idea what you want, but what we want to take with us. After that, to decide what you like best.”
Groaning, though grinning as he did, Sirius told him, “I'm not good at this shite, Remus. You know that. Its best you take it on. The picking out anyway. You have decent tastes for that.”
“You have to live there too, Sirius,” Remus pointed out, chuckling. “Which means I want to make sure I get something you like as well. And I do need you telling me what you want to keep and what can stay when we move. I assume that most of it stays, but there may end up bits you want to take with us.”
“Yeah, alright, that I get,” Sirius sighed, scratching his chin. Looking down at Little Paws, who was gazing up at him, Sirius thought it over. “You have everything from my and Regulus' rooms packed up and stored?”
“One of the first things I did,” Remus confirmed with a nod.
“Good,” Sirius said, tone distracted. “Our bed I want to keep, though you can find a different frame to match whatever. If you want. It's big enough and plenty comfortable. The rest? Honestly? Unless you want to keep it, leave it here. The original furnishings, if there are any left, stay. I want no part of those. The paintings all stay. When it comes to picking it out, as long as it's comfortable, I'm good with it.”
Making some notes of what Sirius said, Remus nodded. “I do like our bed. I say that, despite the fact that some of them were things I bought while you two were gone, it stays. Let's start anew and do this how we want.”
“Good way to think about it,” Sirius nodded, petting Little Paws.
Tossing a catalog at Sirius, Remus told him, “Glance through that. If you see anything you like, mark it. That way I can come up with a scheme of some kind for various rooms.” Opening another in front of him and laying it on the table, he then picked up Little Paws. Placing the Animagus in his lap, he looked down at him and smiled, saying, “You and I will go through this one. Anything you like, put your paw on it.” Hearing a soft bark and the dog sitting up on his haunches, paws on the table, looking intently at the catalog, tail wagging, Remus was pleased. It actually appeared that Harry was at ease and wanted to do this.
While going through his own catalog, Sirius kept glancing over at Harry, grinning as he did. This was most assuredly a step in the right direction and was telling him what he found was working. Perfect. Now he had to work with him in his 'normal' form and they should have things back on track soon.
Holding Harry tightly to him, rubbing his back as his godson rested his head on his shoulder, Sirius was smiling. This had been great! Though Harry stayed as Little Paws the whole time, he had picked out plenty of furniture and either agreed or disagreed with several questions asked. At first, he could see that it had been hard for Harry to do that, but as it went on it seemed to get easier for him. At the end, he had done it quickly and decisively. Which told him that what they were doing was working. Perfect. Just perfect!
“This is good, Harry,” he told him, giving him a squeeze as he did. “It's what we want from you. You're allowed to voice any opinion you have on anything. I don't care what it is. You also can say and do what you want. That's what we want from you, Harry. We want our Harry back just how he was. And you're getting there. I adore what you helped pick out and we're getting all of it. Remus loves it as well. You did a great job.”
Eyes shut as his head rested on Sirius' shoulder, Harry actually smiled for the first time since Dumbledore came over. Quietly, he said, “Thanks.”
Grinning bigger at that, Sirius kissed him on top of the head, he then said, “This is getting better. Much better. Good! Are you feeling a bit better about it and not as stressed?”
Though the bond was there and pulling, making it a struggle to get it out, Harry said, very softly, voice uneven, “Yes, some.” Once that was out, it was a huge relief.
Still grinning, Sirius nodded, “Good! This is great, Harry! We're getting there. It's just going to take us a bit more time. Nothing more than that.”
Nodding, Harry said nothing, but felt better as it was getting easier on him. That pull, the one Dumbledore fully activated, but had been there since they came back, wasn't nearly as bad as what it had been. That was a huge relief for him. He hated the other way, but was helpless to change it.
“We'll manage, Harry,” Sirius told him, unable to stop grinning. “It means I have the right way to go about this. That's what we needed. Now we press on with it.” Gently, he asked, hoping to get an answer that was a real opinion, “It doesn't bother you, does it? It does unnerve me a bit, but if we can keep it going in this direction, I'll manage.”
Though it was a struggle, as this was something more personal, Harry was able to say, voice soft and uneven, “It doesn't.” That was all. Again, though, it felt wonderful to manage it get it out!
“We're going to keep going then,” Sirius nodded, kissing Harry on top of the head again. Thinking it over, he hoped to manage one more thing today. No, he didn't want to overly stress Harry, but he hoped to make an advance in this area too. Gently, he asked, “What is one thing you want to do right now? It can be something small. I want to hear what you would like at the moment.” Stopping, he waited to see if Harry could manage this one or if it would stress him out again. He hoped it wouldn't and Harry could get it out, even if took some work to do it. If Harry managed this, the next time would be easier.
Shivering, feeling the anxiety rising as the bond and spells warred once more, Harry opened his mouth then closed it again. Shaking harder, brow furrowed, he tried to get it out. Shutting his eyes, he clutched Sirius tightly, knuckles turning white then managed to stammer out, voice uneven and soft, “Take a bath.” Once he said it he slumped, still shaking, but felt better. He got it out! No, he didn't think he would manage, but he did. And it felt wonderful. Better than anything he had done up to this point.
“We can do that,” Sirius told him, grinning from ear to ear. “Nice warm water with some bubbles added and we'll feel great. It'll be nice and relaxing for all of us.” Calling an elf, he sent the creature to get Remus then nudged Harry to stand. Once he did, he stood himself then slipped an arm around Harry's shoulders and guided him towards the bathroom. “We'll have some fun and just enjoy the water. It should relax us both.” Giving Harry a squeeze, he told him, lowering his voice, “You can ask for whatever you want. Remember that.” This—it was absolutely wonderful. Their Harry was on his way back to them. That would just take time, nothing more. And they had all of that they needed.
“What is it you wanted to discuss with me, Narcissa?” Severus asked, taking a seat in the big comfortable chair he kept in his library. Looking at the elegant woman seated across from him, he waited, hoping that it would give him a clue about what in Merlin's name was going on that had her unnerved. The last time she visited, Bella had been with her. This time, though, she was alone. That might mean he could get something out of her.
“It's about Draco,” Narcissa sighed, wringing the lace hankie she brought between her fingers. Shaking her head, she told him, “I was wondering if you could talk with him again and try to get him to see sense. I do understand he wants to help the cause, but the way he's going about it might make plenty of situations worse.”
“There is nothing I can do with him, Narcissa,” Severus told her with a dry snort. “I've talked to him numerous times since he started acting in this manner and he's not listening. I am certain that any more conversations will end up a futile effort as well.” Stopping there, he waited to see if she would impart any information they could use.
“He seems to listen to you, Severus. More than anyone else. I've tried to get him to stop his nonsense, but he doesn't.” Narcissa admitted with a shake of her head.
“Get Lucius involved,” Severus told her with a shrug. “I've worked with him for the past year and he's not going to listen to me. Any more attempts are just a waste of my breath.”
“Lucius—well, Draco is trying to help him as in disfavor as he is. I'm sure you understand that.” She imparted quietly, looking at the floor.
Snorting, Severus said, “Unless you know of something that will work that I haven't tried, I'm not bothering with a lost cause. I don't understand the concern, honestly. If there is a reason you want this beyond the obvious, maybe if I know I can help.” All he hoped is that wouldn't come across like he was fishing for information. If it did, she would shut down and he wouldn't get anything they could use.
Looking at the floor, wringing the hankie harder, Narcissa let out a ragged sigh. Shaking her head, she admitted, “There is more this can affect than just the situation with the Dark Lord.”
Figuring that this was the issue, Severus said nothing, waiting, eyebrow arched.
Head dropping back, Narcissa shut her eyes, not sure what to do. She needed help, all there was to it. Her son had no idea what he might invoke if he kept up with this. Shaking her head, not lifting it, she asked, softly, “Is Sirius truly bonded to that Lupin and Harry Potter?”
“Yes,” Severus told her honestly, stopping there. He wasn't sure where this was going, but he would give up the truth there and see where it led. Any bit of information he could get would be a huge help.
Shaking her head, Narcissa lifted it and looked at him, worry creasing her brow. “Severus—Draco needs to stop. He doesn't know what he'll bring down on all of us if he doesn't.”
“And there is nothing I know of to stop him,” Severus told her honestly. Shaking his head, he added, “You and Lucius have coddled him to the point that he's now throwing a tantrum that I have no means to stop.” Lowering his voice, tone snide, he added, “And it's only a matter of time before what he's doing is noticed by someone else.”
“I'm not worried about that end,” Narcissa admitted honestly. “It's the other that bothers me.”
“What do you want me to do, Narcissa? Imperious him to make him act appropriately?” Severus snorted. “If it's not the Dark Lord you're worried about, I have no idea what it might be, so I can't help.”
Looking at the floor, not sure what to do, Narcissa let out a ragged sigh, trembling slightly, then admitted, “I'm worried that the threats Draco is making will get back to Sirius. If they do, he can cause many problems for us.”
“Black, from what I understand, hasn't gone out since returning. I don't understand how you think he's a threat. With Draco’s age, Black isn't likely to go after him,” Severus told her, sneer in his voice. He thought, maybe, if he refused to help, she would give up something.
Now actually wringing her hands, Narcissa stared at the floor then said, softly, “You're from a Pureblood family, Severus. You may not have been raised that way, but you know enough. In marriage contracts there are clauses about behavior and such when it comes to the major family lines. The Black line is no different.” That's where she stopped, not sure what to say or if she should say anything at all.
“What does that have to do with anything?” Severus inquired, tone icy. That would be expected of him, of course, so she wouldn't take it badly. He hoped it would be enough to give him some hints as to what in Merlin's good name was going on so they could use it.
Fearful look on her face, not sure what to do, Narcissa looked at him imploringly. “Severus—if Harry Potter is truly bonded with Sirius and what Draco is saying gets back to him, we have problems. Big problems. It'll affect not only us when it comes to the Dark Lord, but can invoke something in my marriage contract with Lucius that Sirius can use against us. And I'll bet that if what Draco is saying gets back to him, he'll do it. I know that he couldn't when he was on the run, but he might now. We don't need that, Severus. It'll cause all manner of problems we have no way of reversing.”
“What kind of 'problems'?” Severus asked, tone one of someone intrigued, eyebrow up. This was it. She would give it up, hopefully.
“Draco is considered an heir of the House of Black, as I'm sure you know,” Narcissa told him, voice slightly shaky. Seeing him nod, she pressed on, “What he's doing is threatening the bondmate of the head of the House of Black. In doing that, Sirius, if mad enough, can not only disinherit both Draco and myself, but nullify the marriage contract. Despite how long Lucius and I have been married, there are clauses in there that allow him to do that. If he takes that step, Draco will be considered illegitimate by all Pureblood lines out there. As Abraxas' will clearly stated, Lucius has to have a legitimate heir to inherit the whole of the Malfoy fortune. It doesn't matter if this happens when Draco is almost considered an adult. If Sirius does that, it will magically enforce that will and Lucius will lose control of most of the Malfoy fortune until he produces a legitimate Pureblood heir. And Sirius—he might not be one to care about the Pureblood ways or what's in so much, but if he's angry enough, he may invoke that. All he has to do is say it and it starts the process. I'm sure he has a solicitor. If he starts them to taking that on, we lose almost everything. Once we lose almost everything, the Dark Lord loses most of his funding. I don't think I need to explain what that might cause.”
And that was just what they needed! Oh, if they could manage to get Black to invoke that clause, or threaten to, they could hit the Dark Lord where it would do plenty of damage. A visit to Albus was in the offing, that's for sure. Scrubbing a hand over his face, trying to look concerned, he shook his head then asked, “Does he know? Draco that is?”
“No,” Narcissa admitted, eyes locked on the floor. “I keep hoping I don't have to tell him and can get him to back off another way before Sirius gets wind of this. I doubt he would take it well.”
“You need to tell him,” Severus told her firmly, tone as hard as he could get it. “Now. You and Lucius, both, need to tell him just what he can cause by this foolish behavior. Once you do that, tell me and I'll see what I can do to impart just what Black is like when it comes to so much and how protective of Potter he is. Your son does not want to tangle with Black or Lupin. They would have no problem hurting him to get him to back off. And they are ones that he wouldn't win with. Potter alone is a match for your son, Narcissa. He needs to know this. I get that all he is doing is spouting nonsense right now because he's angry, but it can come back to bite him in a big way.”
Shaking her head, letting out a ragged sigh, she told him, tone resigned, “I'll see what I can do. Once we talk to him, I'll have you speak with him as well, if that's alright.”
“He needs the information, all of it, for anything I have to say to work, Narcissa,” Severus told her with a hard stare. “It's time for your son to face reality. That has to come fast. If you don't, chances are that this is going to end in disaster.”
“I know,” Narcissa admitted softly, eyes still locked on the floor. “It's not something I want to have to tell him, Severus.”
“Would you rather him set off your cousin?” Severus asked in a sneering tone. “Which is worse to deal with? We know what Black is like and how vicious he can get.”
“No, I wouldn't,” she admitted, lifting her eyes to look at him. “I'll tell him. Once I do, I'll have you talk to him again. Is there any way to get Albus to back off what he did and reverse the sanctions at school?”
“No,” Severus told her with a rigid shake of his head. “There is nothing I can do there. What he did, despite all I tried, made it to where he gave Albus everything he needed to take that step.” Oh this—it was a goldmine! They needed it, badly. And he fully and completely planned to fill Albus in as quickly as he could.
“Let me get with Lucius and we'll fill him in. Once we do that, I'll have you over to see what you can manage,” Narcissa told him with a sad shake of her head. “We need this to stop fast, Severus. If he doesn't, I truly fear what can come of it.”
“Understood and I'll do my best,” Severus told her with a firm nod, though happy with the information he got. Oh yes, this may be just what they needed. Now if Albus could manage to get Black to do threaten this, they would get all kinds of help!
