Chapter 16
Looking over the letter Bill composed to the goblins, Lucius made a couple changes in it, but nodded in approval. Gathering the documentation they had on the bond, he attached it then said, “We'll get this to Albus. He can take it to the head goblin then go from there. You have enough documentation that they can work out something for a leave of absence. It falls under contractual clauses for unforeseeable circumstances. It shouldn't be a huge hardship. Let's see what he can manage.”
“If it comes down to it, I'll take what vacation time I have.” Bill told him as he ate.It was lunch time, so they were gathered in the kitchen after spending the morning working on other bits with this mess. Snape and the twins were at the shop. So far, that seemed like it was going fine as they hadn't heard anything to the contrary. The plan there was for once they were done for the day, the three were heading to Spinners End with some of the elves to gather the rest of Severus' belongings. Until the expansion was complete, they would be stored, but he wanted them, understandably.“What else do we have on the agenda, do we know?” Remus asked, looking around. “Some of it we've got sorted. I'll start getting the Wolfsbane tonight. Albus found the muzzle and booties we needed. He's going to take on making sure they will hold up to the magic and are strong enough. That's a huge worry off our shoulders.”“It is,” Sirius nodded. “With the wards in place, you should be fine to stay on your floor.” Sighing, pushing his plate away, he said, “We have another Healers appointment in under a week. That we need to worry about getting out for. Like last time, it's after hours, so no one will see us there. Just expect for it to take time. None of this will be easy to work with and has to be done just so.”“We'll make a notation of that and deal accordingly,” Lucius nodded, making a note on a parchment he had by him.“Next week I'm going back to work. Before then, we're going to need to come up with a glamour of some kind for Draco. Maybe charm something so as long as he has it on that it'll stay up.” Charlie told all of them looking around.Though he had Lucius make a note of that, Remus glanced towards Sirius and said, “I think that's in your area, Sirius. You were the one that was the best with Charms. If I remember right, you did something similar at one point while an Auror.”“I did and I'm sure it'll be easy enough to recreate. We'll work on that today. I should have something for you in time,” Sirius assured Charlie, already trying to remember just what he had done and how he had gone about it.“Bill, since you lot don't have much to do today, we were wondering if you could take a look at the wards and see what you can find. Of course, this relates to why your mother can't get in. As you're the one better with them because of your experience as a curse breaker, we thought it best you take it on as you can probably detect more than any of the rest of us can. Albus is looking over the readings he has, but you might find something he can't,” Lucius told him, looking his way.“I'll see what I can find,” Bill nodded. That was a curiosity, of course, so he wanted answers. He also thought if he did find anything that it might be related to the lingering spells on those that were involved in the mess that happened. Not that he cared if his mum couldn't get in and out, in fact he'd prefer she stayed away, but he was wondering about what was going on himself.“We'll see what we can find on that before the day's out,” Sirius assured him.“The elves are going to go floor to floor today to start on the expansions,” Remus said, looking around. “They're going to work from the top down, from what they told us. The warding is all in place and as strong as they can get it, which is good. We've also got the contingency plans written up and will send those along to everyone so you know which area you're tending to. If you see anything at all that needs tweaked or can be made to work better, let us know.” Pressing on, he talked about a few other minor bits, nothing too big, to make sure they were all on the same page.
“I have a question for you, Draco,” Charlie started. The two of them were in the room they shared, relaxing. From what he could see, Draco was making a list of personal belongings he wanted brought over from the Manor. As they would have more room once the floor was expanded, that was fine. He was also having the elves go grab everything of his and giving up his apartment today. It had finally hit him that there was no reversing this, so there was no point in paying for something that he wasn't ever going to get to use again. After all, he was transferring to the dragon reserve in Wales, so he would have had to find a new place anyway.
“What's that?” Draco asked, looking up from the ever growing list. The two of them were getting along better, thus having a longer tether, so he was doing what he could to keep that going despite the tension that was still there.“It's about when you stepped in front of me while the nightmare with mum was going on,” Charlie said, looking at him. Seeing Draco nod then motion him to go on, he asked, “What prompted that? Do you know? Was it just an impulse or something else?”Folding his arms over his chest, Draco thought it over, brow furrowed. After several moments, he told Charlie honestly, “I don't know. I really don't. It was just something that happened. While it was really chaotic by then, what with everything that was going on, that wasn't it either.”“Was there a pull or something to take that step, do you know? I'm asking because I'm trying to determine if it was something from the bond or if it was you with no prompting,” Charlie explained.Shaking his head slowly, Draco admitted, “I really don't know, just that it happened.”“Can you walk me through what went on with you? I know what we wrote down yesterday for everyone, but I was wondering if there was more.”It was something Draco could do, so he nodded. Slowly, he walked him through what he was thinking up until they went downstairs. There wasn't much, as it was so chaotic and he had focused on the situation itself, but there was some. Sighing when he got to the part about stepping in front of Charlie, he shook his head. “I don't know where it came from, honestly. All I remember is that I was getting angry. What I do remember is the bondmark heating up, a lot. It was so hot that it hurt, like it was going to catch fire or something, then I stepped in front of you. My thought might have been, though I'm not sure, was that she would focus elsewhere because she just wasn't going to get anywhere with me like she was the rest of you. Nothing she was pulling would work with me and I'm a bit like Potter in that I'm not one of her kids that has to play that stupid game with her. Also like him, I wouldn't put up with it to make nice.”Nodding at that, taking it in, Charlie told him, “True. I'm sure she wouldn't have tangled with you much as you wouldn't have a problem telling her to get stuffed. Or your parents would probably have stepped in if she did start.”“While I wasn't thinking about that, it's true,” Draco admitted, a bit stunned because he realized that for the first time he wasn't thinking about invoking his parents in a mess. Doing such a thing was normal for him, but it wasn't there. Brow furrowed, he looked at Charlie and admitted, “I really didn't. The thought to do what I normally would wasn't even there or on the tip of my tongue.”Staring at Draco, thinking it over, Charlie grabbed a quill and parchment then made a note of that. “I'm wondering if it wasn't the heating up of the bondmark that overrode plenty. It might have been triggering something that wasn't there before. When we finish talking, I'll send this off to Remus and your dad. Anything that can help us figure out this mess will be a huge help.”Nodding vigorously, Draco understood the idea, so he would pass over anything he knew. It just wasn't much. As Charlie wrote, he asked, trying to keep the normal tone out of his voice, hoping he didn't cause an argument, “That bit—how normal was it for you when you were home? I mean, it was really bad.”Snorting as he jotted it all down, Charlie said, “It's normal enough. Most times the four of us were ignored other than mum telling us to do something or other. We're used to it by now.”“It's not right!” Draco huffed. He couldn't imagine growing up in a house where such bits went on regularly. While he often bemoaned the fact, to himself anyway, that his parents weren't the affectionate sort the way some he saw were, he could easily take that over what he saw the other day.“It's all we knew, Draco,” Charlie shrugged. “Nothing was going to change it. No one was going to step in because of the front put on by so many. Everyone thought mum and dad were the greatest parents in the world, ignoring mum's louder traits about so much. As we grew up with it, we didn't realize, until we went to school that is, that most families weren't that way. After we figured it out, we just focused on helping each other to make sure we stayed out of the worst and her way. Well, that and getting the hell out as fast as we could.”Shaking his head, Draco wasn't sure what to say about it. He couldn't fathom having to deal with that growing up and beyond. Then came another thought. “The bit with her accusing Bill of molesting Potter—Look, Potter and I don't get along. It's obvious to all, but even I know he isn't about to let someone touch him that way. Why would she accuse her own son of molesting him? I can't see where it makes any form of sense.”“Because it's easier to accuse him of molesting Harry and cementing that thought in her mind than to admit that Ginny wasn't ever going to get what she wanted,” Charlie snorted, shaking his head. “And I'm sure by now that she actually believes it. Nothing anyone, anywhere, is going to do will convince her otherwise at this point of the 'fun'.”Seeing Draco look stunned and about to say something, figuring what the next question was, he explained, since he knew that spell to not poke was active, “Bill didn't. Nothing sexual happened before Harry hit the legal age of consent. When they met and decided they liked each other, the two wrote letters mostly. Those were sent through Fred and George as Harry was in school with them. When he wasn't in school and Bill did manage to go see him, I usually went with him. Even if I didn't, when he was at that horrid house in Little Whinging, there was no chance for them to do a damned thing unless it was on a picnic table in a public play park. Neither of them were likely to take a chance like that. If it wasn't there, he was either at the Burrow or here in the last couple of years. I don't think I need to explain the problems with either of those places when it comes to having time alone to do something sexual. Whenever they did finally take that step, it wasn't until after Harry turned sixteen. There's no chance Bill would have done anything before then. Even now, I'm not sure when they did as they had to be highly cautious of people not finding out.”Shaking his head slowly, Draco told him, “I don't get this, at all. I mean—it's not her choice who Potter is with. If he's good enough for your sister, you would think she would be happy he was with Bill. After all, that would still make him family.”“Because Ginny wanted Harry from the time she laid eyes on him and mum promised her that's who she could have,” Charlie groaned. Before Draco could say it, he added, “You don't have to tell me how screwed up that is, all right? We all know. None of us see it as 'right' either. It's just mum. She tried sucking Harry in from the time he and Ron met. What she never understood was that Harry wasn't interested and that Bill was who he wanted to be with. The fact that it was a man wouldn't have factored in, just that Harry didn't want Ginny. She never saw Harry as someone that had a choice in the matter or that he might never see her that way. Her thoughts are always that people will do it her way. Harry was the same in that as she considered him 'her child' despite the fact that he wasn't. From what we know from letters Harry sent and some of what he told us, she pulled the same stunts with him she has with so many; pushing him that way. All she did was go about it a different way, with her acting all sweet and like she was his mother, looking out for what was best for him. We made sure he knew to stay wary for those stunts so he didn't end up in the middle of something he had no way out of.”“That is really screwed up,” Draco breathed, eyes wide. “I mean I know plenty from families that were Death Eaters and that were being forced in that direction, but they wouldn't have pulled these stunts.”“You don't have to tell me how screwed up it is,” Charlie snorted, slouching in his chair, arms folded over his chest. “We know.” Then he added, very quietly, “We think she had someone helping and encouraging her.”Looking confused as he didn't know who it could be, Draco thought it over. Then it hit him. “Dumbledore?” He asked, figuring Charlie would get it.“We think so,” Charlie sighed, head going back. “At least in some way. Albus let mum and dad get away with plenty when it came to Harry that he would never have allowed with his real godfather. That tells me something is wonky. We just don't know what it might be when it comes to that direction or the why behind it.”Head coming back up, Charlie looked at his bondmate and said, “Look, you and Harry don't get along. We all know that. What you don't realize is how many directions Harry's been pulled all these years. So much of what happened was encouraged, even if it was passively. Then there is what that old man let go on when it came to Harry and his so-called family. Anyone else he would have stopped it long ago. He let it go on with the excuse of those wards. Draco, you've had a very good life. Your parents might not be perfect, but they are far better than what Harry and those of us in this house went through. Harry is not some pampered prince, trust me. He wasn't treated any better than me and my brothers were. In fact, he was treated worse in plenty of ways. And no one, anywhere, can convince me that Albus didn't know how bad it was. He knew, plenty, and let it go on. We just don't know why.”“I'm not sure what I thought when it came to him,” Draco told him, thinking over so much. He did remember the poke the first year about Potter's family not wanting him home for the hols, but he wasn't sure if that was the case. Part of him always thought Potter, despite how his clothes were, was pampered. Maybe he chalked the clothes up to some deranged Muggle fashion trend or something.“Trust me, whatever you thought was wrong,” Charlie sighed. “The four of us saw plenty that no one ever knew about, except, maybe, Albus.” To placate Draco, he added, “I'm also sure that plenty of what Harry thought about you was as well. It went both ways. Just—leave him be on some topics and don't bring them up. He's having a hard enough time as it is. The arthritis is not something nice to deal with. He's been wrestling with that since last year and kept it hidden from everyone but the four of us. There were other bits as well.”Shaking his head slowly, Draco honestly didn't know what to say to some of it and had more questions, but wasn't sure if he should ask either. Maybe this was a case of he needed to leave it alone and let it come out in another way. Changing topics, slightly, he asked, “Bill said that he doubts your mum is going to leave this. Is that true?”“Oh, mum is not going to let it go, trust me on that,” Charlie told him with a dry snort and a roll of his eyes. “She's just going to stew, get angrier then blow again. It's coming. Especially since we all stood up to her. That means she wants us put back in our place.”“Bloody hell,” Draco breathed, shaking his head. “You would think she would have learned her lesson with all Potter had to say. I mean—well, it was all put out there for everyone to see. He made a rather spectacular showing of it, in fact.”“That he did,” Charlie said with a nod, grinning for the first time since they started on the topic. “Harry was as fed up as we were with the whole mess. The only difference is he's the sort to say something whereas we were more likely to just try to make it go as smoothly as possible and stay out of the way. He's also the kind, as you know, to jump in and defend those he cares about. I'm sure that's what drove most of it. Especially with what was said about Bill and how mum treated Sirius. He's quite protective of those two.” Sobering up, he sighed, “And what he said, though it’s the truth and we all adored it, won't help. In fact, I'm sure it's just fueling mum's anger over it. All that will do is make what's coming worse.”Snorting, Draco grinned, “Let Potter have at it again. That will teach her. Because I don't think she realizes what happened was poetic justice.”“What do you mean?” Charlie asked, confused by that, a bewildered expression on his face. He knew what happened, of course, but wasn't connecting what Draco had to say on it.“Think about it,” Draco told him. Seeing it not connecting, he pressed on, “Ginny was told not to touch him. When she tried, her hands vanished. That should drive the point home that he doesn't want her touching him. Ron called him a pouf. When he did and Potter shouted at him, he turned into a poofy Puffskein then was told to stop being a bigot over it. He, literally, became what he called Potter. Granger did her normal know-it-all, trying to force her view of the world on him. Potter told her to shut up then she got silenced when she kept going. The fact that someone didn't want to hear her view of the situation made it to where she couldn't give it for once. Your mum was told to get out until she could act like a real mother. Now she can't get back in. She wasn't acting like a real mother. Rather poetic if you ask me because what happened was directly correlated to what they did.”Eyes widening, Charlie grinned then grabbed the parchment and started scribbling madly. “Damn, Draco! That was genius in putting it together. I don't think anyone thought of it that way! And I'm damned sure it can help because I bet the spells still being there relate to what Harry said.”Looking smug at the compliment, Draco leaned back and crossed his ankles. Quietly, he added, as Charlie scribbled madly, “I bet the elves not being able to pop out and the wall not vanishing like it should have was related as well. Potter made it clear he was fed up and had plenty to say. He was furious about what happened with your mum. That swirling whatever from the three of them was probably driven by their magic, from what we know, and the anger there. Everyone said they thought it was. I'm sure the magic from that—whatever it was might have prevented anyone from actually stepping in and stopping it. Potter didn't want it stopped then fought even your brother and Black from hauling him away. Not sure how, but it seems to fit.”Stopping writing in mid-word, Charlie looked at Draco then grinned again, starting to nod vigorously. “I bet your right there, too! Let me pass it along and see what your dad and Remus can sort. Not sure what they can find out, but I'd bet my dragon-hide boots you're right.”Smug expression growing, Draco nodded. As Charlie scribbled madly, he asked, “You have dragon-hide boots?” That he was curious about as he hadn't seen the man in anything but his normal clothes.“Several pairs,” Charlie snorted with a grin. “Not only do they protect your feet with what we do, but when a dragon we helped take care of dies, it's standard for us to get a piece of their hide to make boots with. It's an old tradition for those that work with them. Something like one of those old wives tales. It says that some of their magic passes to the ones that help care for them. So, we do it that way.” Looking up, he smiled a tad and said, “When my stuff gets here, you can try on a pair. You do need something to protect yourself anyway, just to be safe. I think our feet are about the same size. So, you can wear them when I go to work. We'll have to get you some of the fireproof gear anyway as that's standard for anyone that's around them. Trust me, they are dangerous and not nice.”Liking that idea, though they were used, Draco nodded. “I can try. What kind of gear am I going to have to get? I mean—not sure there as I've not been around them.”“We can get you the balaclava like I have to cover your head. Then one of the trenches that covers you to your ankles. It's dragon-hide as well. That you'd like as they look good. You won't need the rest we have. I'll need to teach you some stunning spells beyond what they go over in school before we go. Those you have to know. We'll take care of it for the most part, of course, but you knowing them is wise.”“What are dragons like? I mean, I know they are dangerous, but that's about all,” Draco asked, curious. He'd read a few books about them over his time, but he wasn't sure how much in them was fact or lore.“They are fascinating, trust me,” Charlie smiled. “Their personalities are worse than mum's, though.” Then he began talking about his favorite topic as he scribbled out what he was writing.
