Chapter 16
After settling in a chair by the table in the kitchen, ignoring the elves that were twittering happily, Tom relaxed, a smug smirk on his face. Though there were wary looks from Harry and Sirius, he didn't wipe the smirk off his face. However, he did take a cup of tea and a sweet roll from an elf.
“What's going on?” Sirius asked warily. Tom usually left them to their own devices most of the time as he was generally busy with whatever plotting he was up to. The look on his face was enough to tell him the man was up to something.“Just this,” Tom told him casually, passing the report he just received from one of his contacts in the Ministry. It wasn't complete, of course, just the basics letting him know Wormtail was in custody with Rufus and Madam Bones, both, tending to the matter. Though they were keeping it secret for now, he planned to make sure the papers got wind of it before the day was out. Doing so would turn up the pressure plenty. As Sirius read over what was there, with Harry peering at the paper as well, he grinned. Right, this was plenty good. Not so much that it would help the situation they were in, it just meant he would finally be cleared and the world would know it. When he finished, he passed it to the grinning Harry then asked, “Right—how fast will they clear me, do you know? And will it be public?”“I'm going to move it along as fast as I can,” Tom told him, taking the paper back from Harry when it was passed to him. “And it'll be public, even before you end up cleared. It's something I'm going to ensure. Give it a couple days to see what's going on where. Fudge won't like another black eye with the pounding he's taking about some other matters. Just give it time. Remember, you're on the precipice.”“Which is better than I've been for years,” Sirius stated. Though he didn't want to admit it to the arse, he was plenty happy with this development. From what little had been said on the topic, he knew the arse was the one behind the whole project. While he was sure there was another motive behind it, one that benefited Tom, he would deal accordingly. “Anything I need to do or do I just wait it out?”“Just wait,” Tom told him after a sip of his tea. “I'll handle whatever else comes up or if it looks like the gears are being gummed up. I have my ways of taking it on.” The latter was delivered with a smug tone he couldn't help.Sirius nodded at what was said then added, starting to dig into his brekky, “If I need to do anything, let me know.”“Of course,” Tom nodded. Then he added, “I doubt you will.” Finishing his tea, he stood and said, “If you need anything, send an elf.” Then he swept out.“Arse,” Sirius said without any venom. He then gave Harry a nudge and said, “Well, in the scheme of what's going on, this isn't going to help much, but I'll be free.”“Free is all that matters, Sirius,” Harry told him with a slight smile, eating a little here and there. “It takes some pressure off you worrying.”“True,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “Because we have plenty to worry about without factoring my wanted status in.” The last part was added with a sigh. However, rather than think about this mess, he added, “If I'm cleared, it makes me your legal guardian. I trump Tom in that area. It can help in the long run, with plenty.”“Yup,” Harry agreed, eating some bacon. After polishing off the last of the food on his plate, Sirius shoved it aside and sipped his tea. He then gave Harry a nudge and grinned, “The day those papers appear saying I'm cleared, we're having a celebratory dinner. A huge one. I want something to rival the feasts at Hogwarts.”“It's the least we can do,” Harry said, smiling again. “Maybe something else to celebrate. I don't know what though.”“Me either, honestly, since we can't leave,” Sirius admitted with a sigh.Rather than dwell on the still horrific situation they were in, he changed topics. “Since the rain has ended, I say we go outside this morning and wander around so we can see what's where. Maybe, if there's somewhere with enough room, we can fly a little.”“Sounds good,” Harry nodded. He wasn't all that enthused about the idea, but it beat staying cooped up in the house. “Maybe we can grab Nagini to help. She's bound to know what's where.”“Good plan,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “She's sure to know a place big enough to fly a bit.”“You have your broom then?” Harry asked. Sirius had one, from what he said, but it was the same broom he had when he was an Auror, so it was far slower than his.“I do,” Sirius grinned, then nudged him. “It might be slow, Harry, but I have plenty of experience you don't, so I'll give you a run for your money!”“You might, but I'm up for the challenge,” Harry shot back with a bit of a grin. “We'll have fun either way. And you'll have to show me some of the stunts you talked about the last couple years. Those I've not seen or tried.”“I can,” Sirius nodded. “There are plenty I can show you. We'll have some fun with it, I promise.” This was good. At least he had Harry interested in something. He was sure his godson would tire out fairly quickly, but it was far better than just laying around thinking about how bad the situation they were in was. Any little bit would help.
Albus settled back in his chair with a tired groan after taking the mass of papers Remus handed over. From the look of what was here, those taking on the research had found plenty of what Tom wanted. It was fairly detailed as well, with footnotes and notations. Everything Tom could need. It was his hope Sirius would get a gander as well. Plenty here could help him.
After tossing the papers on his desk, he gave a pleased nod then began to twiddle his thumbs. “Is this all you found?” He asked the tired looking Remus.“Everything,” Remus assured him. After stretching with a groan, he then slumped. “We went through not only the books you gave us, but everything else we could get our hands on. As we've run out of resources, unless you know of somewhere else to look, this is about all there is on the topic.”“I've passed along everything I could find where it's even mentioned,” Albus told him, sighing. “It should give Severus what he needs. Let's just hope Sirius can get his hands on it. What's in there can only give him an advantage I'm sure he desperately needs at this point.”“We can hope because I don't think any of us want to chance trying to send it to him in some way,” Remus said with a sad shake of his head. “Even a fraction of what's in those papers can give him something to work with.”“There isn't any way I know of to get it to him,” Albus admitted, looking sad. “Let's see what comes of it.”When Remus nodded, he leaned forward, hands clasped on the desk and said, “There is something else I learned this morning that might assist. How much? I don't know, but it can only help.” When Remus looked at him, he imparted the little bit he heard about Peter being in custody. When he finished, seeing Remus looking hopeful, he said, “I don't know all the facts yet, keep that in mind. However, Sirius being cleared can only help his precarious situation.”“It can,” Remus agreed with a nod, looking pleased. Then, though, a serious look passed over his face and he added, quietly, “This—it must be a plot, Albus. There isn't any chance Peter would just end up 'caught'. He hid too well and, from what we've learned, knows too much for him to just end up in the hands of the Ministry.”“I think so as well,” Albus agreed. “However, Sirius being cleared will help. I'm sure it's a plot on Tom's end for some means, probably to do what he can to protect himself. I don't know. Let's see what comes out from Peter. It may give us a better idea of what Tom has in mind. It's almost a certainty it'll leak out soon as he's in custody, then we may learn details.”“True,” Remus agreed with a little smile. “Any chance at poking around to see what's going on? I know you have contacts aplenty in the Ministry.”“At this point, no,” Albus told him with a sad shake of his head. “Amelia is still on the warpath when it comes to me. I don't want to chance riling her. While I'm sure Cornelius is feeding her hunt, I don't want to draw attention if I don't have to. If, in a few days, we don't hear anything, I'll see what I can find.” This was a bit of a delayed fallout from the whole incident with Draco because of various areas that came up with the hunt for Harry. He wasn't at all pleased with it, but would deal accordingly. All he had to do was wait it out.“She's still looking into you?” Remus asked, concerned, brow furrowed.“Oh yes,” Albus told him with a heavy sigh. “Give it time and her focus will shift. I'm not overly concerned. Let her poke. She won't come up with anything that will cause me too many issues.”“With her, Albus, you never know,” Remus told him softly, shaking his head. “If Fudge is egging her on, she might find plenty we don't want out and will cause problems for many of us. You know her, Albus, and what's she's like. With how badly the search for Harry is going, she's probably plenty agitated and looking to find someone to take out her frustrations on.”“Another true assessment,” Albus admitted. “Never fear, I'll weather the storm. She has plenty on her plate at the moment. I'm certain something will draw her attention away.”“We can hope,” Remus sighed. As he looked at the aging headmaster, he asked, quietly, “Even if we can find Harry and Sirius, I don't see it helping much, Albus. I mean, we can pass information and help all we can, but, in the end, we can't get them away.”“This is true,” Albus nodded. “Information, though, can be passed. It can help us.” What he didn't add was if it took the sacrifice of Harry and Sirius to end the war, they would have to go that route. After all, the greater good came into play in situations such as this. It was distasteful, he would admit it, and he would look down every avenue he could to make it so they didn't have to ponder that step, but he wasn't sure there was one.“Until we know there isn't anything we can do and have to leave Sirius to use his wits, we'll keep going then,” Remus told him with a nod.Since he knew Albus had plenty to tend to with the school, he began asking about any information on other areas they might need to know. The more information all of them had, the better off they would end up in the long run. After all, they could look into plenty Albus couldn't.
After reading through the document which just came from the DMLE, Cornelius pulled out his hanky and wiped down his sweaty face with a trembling hand. This was—well, he was thankful Black didn't go to prison on his watch. If he was the one who had put him there, it would end up plenty bad. As it was, the government itself wouldn't look good over sticking an innocent man in prison without a trial. And if Black chose to sue over it, it would end up even worse.
While this troublesome issue wouldn't directly affect him, though there would end up some splatter from it, it just added to the myriad of other problems he had. And it wasn't welcome. He didn't realize that helping Lucius would cause so many problems, but it was. Well, he expected some from within the Ministry, of course, but nothing he couldn't handle. The issue was, apparently, some of his other big donors weren't at all happy with him helping do what he could for Draco. Three of them had been in the day before. They had managed to get their hands on an internal memo he sent to the prosecutor's office where he demanded they reduce the charges to the point no jail time was involved. To say they were upset was a massive understatement. In the end, they made it clear if he didn't back away from Lucius, they were backing away from him and taking their money with them. No, he didn't like this, not at all.Now he was in a quandary. Lucius brought plenty of money to his coffers and always had. The other three, though, gave him more than Lucius did, by a long shot. In fact, it would be a crippling blow to his campaigns if he lost them. Nothing Lucius could give would make up for their loss. Normally, this fact would make him back away from Lucius, but the wealthy Wizard was also always there to give advice when he wanted it, as well as quick to pass information and other bits he desperately needed at times. He had no one close who could give him what Lucius did. And he wasn't sure he could be effective without what Lucius brought to the table. Which left him wondering what in Merlin's name to do about the situation.Cornelius gave a tired groan then leaned back in his chair, eyes shut. If all of the above wasn't bad enough, there was another cryptic statement tossed out during the meeting which he didn't know what to do about. One of the things said was, though it hadn't been a direct threat, that the public would be most interested to learn how he was trying to mitigate what Draco had done. They also pointed out he was spending more time and effort trying to help Draco than he was looking for Harry Potter, the real victim in what happened. So far, no one knew where the boy was while Draco was caught red handed in the crime. They then speculated how some papers would love to run a story such as that. No, not good. Not good at all. With a shake of his head, he pondered what was said and knew it wasn't an idle threat. The man who leveled it would, indeed, go to the press and poke them. And, with the information this man had, the press would take it and run so fast he wouldn't know what hit him when they were done. If the information on this case wasn't bad enough, he knew the three also had plenty more 'dirt' on him which wouldn't look good to the public and paint a large target on him. So, it came down to did he want to keep his job or help Lucius.Without opening his eyes, Cornelius shook his head. The choice was an easy one, after all. Lucius—well, Draco had committed the crime he was arrested for. From all he could get on the mess, this wasn't a case of clues, but an eyewitness, a teacher no less, had caught him. They found evidence Draco had brewed the 'bomb' and everything else. No, it was a very simple prosecution with all the evidence prosecutors could want to convict. And there was a reason this 'bomb' carried the penalties it did. Harry Potter still missing was proving why. Yes, Lucius needed to go. He would end up a heavy albatross if he didn't, because Cornelius was sure helping Draco would end up coming back to bite him in the future. He finally opened his eyes and looked at his desk then gave a weary sigh. Yes, the decision was made. Of course, he wouldn't say anything to Lucius about not helping until it came to the point he had to, but he would and planned to make it clear to his other donors. Lucius—well, he would deal with the fallout there when the time came. As it was, Lucius had his own problems to deal with and wouldn't look too closely at him for the time being. When it came to the point he would, Cornelius would deal accordingly. Finally sitting up, Cornelius began to run through in his mind what he had to do. He needed to not only send out a letter to the donors that visited him assuring them he was cutting Lucius loose, but send out memos to withdraw the previous ones he had written trying to help Draco. It wouldn't do to have those floating around still, especially if the press got wind of it. Then he needed to look into the Peter Pettigrew situation and see what was going on. It was something he needed to stay on top of so when the press did get a hold of the story, as they were sure to, he knew what happening. He also needed to draw up pardon papers for Sirius Black. Oh, he wouldn't sign them until he knew exactly what was going on, but they would be ready. As it would take time to find the right template for those papers, he needed someone on it. Percy would be perfect as he would keep it to himself. Finally moving in what he felt was the right direction, he was ready to go. Lots to tend to and he would be busy for some time.
Of all the bits he'd tried with Harry to get him to come around, this was the one working the best. While Tom didn't have a full Quidditch pitch on the property, he had an area that was used for the magical version of croquet. As it was cleaned out and huge, they were using the sky above it to smack some balls around. And it was working great. Harry seemed like he was actually enjoying himself smacking the balls or just flying. For a time, he was showing his godson various tricks on the broom, something he seemed to love, mucking about with them and soaring around. While his broom wasn't nearly as fast as Harry's, something which put him at a serious disadvantage with some parts, it didn't matter. He was having a great time as well. There was nothing like getting out and flying to take your mind off your troubles.
As he chased a ball Harry smacked, he was wondering about seeing if he could buy new brooms for both of them. Not only would they be on an even footing when it came to flying, it was something they would both like. Harry appeared to like mucking around just as much as he did. If they both had something with the same speed and maneuverability, they would enjoy it more. Besides, it would give them both something to take their mind off how bad this was. He would have to say something to Tom about getting it because they couldn't go out or owl order anything. Of course, he would pay for it and would make that clear. After about an hour in the air, both of them landed to have something to drink and a snack. When Harry sat down beside him then began to sip his butterbeer, Sirius pulled him close, slipping an arm around him. As he sipped his own drink, he said, “I vote, on the days it doesn't rain that is, we come out here and smack balls around. It'll do both of us good to muck about and have some fun. What do you think?”“As long as it's not raining or cold,” Harry told him, leaning heavily against his godfather. “I had enough of flying in the bad weather with practices and games at school.”“Yeah, did my time with that at school as well,” Sirius chuckled. “No thanks. On days like today it'll be fun, though. We'll both enjoy it.”“We will,” Harry agreed. Then nudging Sirius, he said, “You're showing me some more of those stunts. They're fun.”“I can,” Sirius grinned. “I know a ton more than what I showed you. Between me and your dad, we knew most of them and made up a few of our own. So, we'll keep busy with them.”“Maybe we can set up some kind of hoops to smack the balls through?” Harry asked, looking around.“I'll get with the elves to see what they can manage. It might not be the standard hoops, but I'm sure they can come up with something similar we can use,” Sirius told him, looking around at all the space. He thought they could manage something to make mucking around more fun. He then nudged Harry and added, “We can try the croquet court, though. It's a fun game.”“Never played it,” Harry admitted with a shrug. “The Muggle version either.”“It's great,” Sirius grinned. “We'll have fun. The balls tend to move around on their own and do wonky bits. It's something we'll have a great time with and you don't need more than two players, though more is fun as well.”“Maybe it's something I'd like to try then,” Harry admitted with a nod. “I don't know much about the Magical version of games, just what I've encountered at school and such.”“I'll have to introduce you to a few,” Sirius told him, planning to do so. It would give them some bits to use to entertain themselves and keep both their minds off how bad this was. Any kind of distraction could only help both of them.“So, how do you play croquet anyway?” Harry asked, curious. He wasn't sure if it was a complicated game or not and wanted to know going in. All he knew was the bit about smacking balls through hoops, nothing more.“It's not complicated, I promise,” Sirius assured him then began to talk him through the most basic premise of the game and how to play it. As he did, he summoned one of the elves to set up the court. They might not play a full game, but could have some fun until it grew dark. Good!
