Chapter 16
At about noon, Rufus heard a sharp knock on his door. Assuming it had to do with the myriad issues going on, he told them to come in then leaned back, waiting to see what this pertained to. His brow furrowed when he saw the two he assigned to the Potter issues. From the way he set this up, he knew they were only working on the special assignment while supposedly being assigned an area dealing with You-Know-Who.
He waited for them to take a seat then asked, “Is there an issue?” Since they turned up so quickly after getting the assignment, he thought they might have encountered something.
“Yes,” Witt told him, leaning back and sipping at the coffee he had.
“We went over to the Dursleys this morning,” Knupper nodded. Before Rufus could ask, he explained, “Like normal, we made sure we weren’t seen and dealt with them the standard way. The problem comes in with what we found out.”
“This isn’t good, Rufus,” Witt then added, shaking his head. “While we didn’t talk to their boy since he’s at school, we learned plenty.” He then gave his boss a rundown of everything they learned.
When his partner finished, seeing Rufus look plenty troubled, Knupper added, “We don’t know what you want to do about this, Rufus. Something—well, you understand. Even if the lad turns back up, he can’t go back there. While they didn’t say much about Dumbledore, they said enough for both of us to think he’s more involved than anyone knows.”
Fingers tapping on the arm of his chair, Rufus looked at the two, not sure what to say. He sure as hell didn’t like anything he heard either. After thinking it over, he said, not straightening up, brow still drawn down, “How about this—let me take this part to Amelia. She has ways of sorting whatever we don’t without it looking suspicious. You two go back to investigating. If she wants something done, I’ll pass it along.”
“We can do that,” Witt nodded, seeing his partner doing the same. Then he said, looking intent. “We want to talk to the squib. If she’s there at Dumbledore’s behest, she has to know plenty. More than the family does. If we can’t, Amelia might want to talk to her. From what we all know, the boy has run away once before. This might be a case of he’s done it again, as suggested and it will firm it up.”
Rufus nodded as he jotted that suggestion down. “I’ll take it up with Amelia. Let me see what she says on the topic. In this case, you’re right; Amelia is the one to handle it. Once we finish here, I’ll go speak with her on the matter. If I need you involved, I’ll tell you. Until then, write up everything you learned and follow other leads. When it comes to this, if there is one of our kind you think has information, tell me and we’ll see what we can do.”
“There might be a couple,” Knupper said, glancing at Witt. “The Weasleys are involved, more than just as Potter’s friend there. How? Got me.”
“More Amelia needs to take on,” Rufus nodded as he jotted down notes. When he finished, he asked, looking between the two, “Do you have another lead you can take on?”
“Several,” Witt assured him. “They are in Little Whinging, Muggles there. Those we’ll tend to over the next few days so we don’t turn up too much and draw suspicion.”
“Good plan,” Rufus agreed.
“We’re going to end up needing information from some of our kind, Rufus,” Knupper said with a heavy sigh and shake of his head. “And drawing Amelia in for some of them is a bad idea. I think if we go about it as we’re hunting for Potter, we can manage. In the end, we can Obliviate them so they don’t remember.”
“We were thinking about finding someone not real happy with Albus, though in his Order, might be a good place to start. It just comes down to us not knowing who to go to there,” Witt added. “If you have a clue, let us know.”
“Off the top of my head, I would say Aberforth,” Rufus told him distractedly as he thought over what they wanted. “He’s in the Order, but can’t stand his brother. From my understanding, he’s only in the Order because it’s the right thing to do. We all know he won’t talk if you go to him about something we need. You just have to stay circumspect about it.”
After a glance at his partner and seeing him nod, Witt said, “We’ll go talk to him today. That’s something we can manage easily. Both of us have talked to him as a source before, so it won’t end up sounding odd to him.”
“Do that,” Rufus told them, looking between the two. “I’ll talk with Amelia after hours tonight so nothing slips out.” He then began to ask about details of what they learned, more troubled by what he heard than before.
After checking on Harry and Eddie, Sirius once more joined Severus in one of the parlors they were working in on the ground floor. Seeing Severus look at him, eyebrow up, he waved his hand and assured him, “No problems there. They’re working away. From what I saw, they actually seem like they’re working well together. Eddie is being quite thorough and making Harry discuss it with him rather than just having him reading whatever.”
“Good,” Severus nodded, pleased. He then went back to work arranging what they brought down from the ballroom. Since the elves already had the carpet down and wall treatments up, it wasn’t bad to work with. The cleaning had taken most of the morning, but they expected that.
Joining Severus and pulling his wand, Sirius told him, “This is going to work out well, honestly. Better than us covering theory. Plus it’ll give Harry someone else to talk to. The Blue Lady will as well. It can only help him as we both know he’s dealing with plenty. More than he will tell us.”
“Indeed,” Severus agreed. “We all have our issues, but Harry has the most chance of dealing with them better and not letting them affect him so much in the future. As we well know, they are now, plenty.”
“True,” Sirius told him with a blurry sigh as he worked. “Let’s see what they can do. As old as the ghosts are, nothing he says is going to shock them, especially since they know part of the background. They also have experience we don’t and can probably nudge him the right way with just common sense.”
“Again, I agree,” Severus nodded. Then he changed topics and told Sirius, “The Librarian says she thinks she’s on the trail of a spell we can use to remove the Dark Mark. It’s a bond of some kind, something we all know, it’s just down to finding the right one. From what she told me earlier, the spell she’s looking into can be used to break plenty of bonds. Though I’m hopeful, I’m not going to count on it. The Dark Lord knows too much magic for him to have used a simple spell.”
“If it was a simple one, we would have found it,” Sirius groused. “I won’t get my hopes up with this one, not that I would mind if it did work.”
“I feel the same way,” Severus sighed, shaking his head.
“They come up with anything on the Horcrux yet?” Sirius then asked. They both agreed the Horcrux came before the Dark Mark because of all it could cause.
“They are working on it,” Severus grumbled, lowering his wand and taking a step back to check what was where. He wanted this to come out a certain way, so he planned to ensure everything was just so. “From what she showed me, they found more information on it than we’ve seen, something which can help us. However, nothing on removal.”
With a blurry sigh, Sirius shook his head. “Wonderful,” he mumbled. “We’ll find something, might just take time.”
“As long as we stay hidden and safe, it won’t be a big bother,” Severus told him. “We have the effects blocked. I doubt the Dark Lord can get through. If Harry can keep blocking it and the Dark Lord doesn’t look into ways around it or find another way to use that connection we’ll be fine. All we have to do is stay vigilant.”
“Among other things,” Sirius told him, shaking his head sadly. Seeing Severus look at him, about to ask, Sirius explained, “While we’re good and hidden, I’m sure it won’t be long before some figure out Harry wasn’t taken. They may even figure out he left on his own. While I hope you and I don’t end up involved in that, especially me, and they think you’re in the hands of the evil arse, I don’t think anyone is going to think he took Harry if his body doesn’t show up soon.”
“Very true,” Severus said slowly after he thought it over. “We didn’t have much time to put the plan together or seriously ponder consequences. However, even if those in power do figure out Harry left on his own, there is little they can do. He’s of legal age to do so. If it comes out you’re involved, from someone other than Albus, that would end up riskier as they might think you’re harming him or something. Then they would pick up what they’re doing. With the protections on the house, we should be fine. We just need to stay alert.”
“It’s Albus I’m worried about, Severus,” Sirius told him, taking a seat on the settee which was cleaned off and waiting for them to place it. “We know what he’s like. If he does figure it out, we have big problems. He’ll stop at nothing to find Harry. While the house is protected, we never know what he can manage. Including trying to draw Harry back if he can’t find him.”
“I know,” Severus sighed heavily, plopping into a chair and crossing his long legs. Sending for an elf to bring them a drink, he added, “I wouldn’t put it past him to put Harry’s friends in danger of some kind to draw him out if he figures out he left of his own accord. Either them or his loathsome family. He might not like them, but he would do plenty to protect them as I’m sure Albus knows. After all, he spent plenty of times emphasizing that relationship and making sure Harry knew how important it was.”
“And he did that for more than those wards,” Sirius snarled after taking the tea the elf brought him. “It’s just part of the conditioning Albus has done with Harry.”
“You’ll get no argument from me on the topic,” Severus told him, a sour look on his face. “As long as we stay hidden, we’ll be fine. Though they might pick up the hunt for you at some point, I wouldn’t worry. We have enough in place to protect ourselves.”
“While I agree with Harry when it came to us getting out fast, I wish we had more time for you to deal with Wormtail like we discussed.” Sirius sighed, leaning back, head dropping backwards, eyes going shut. “We need him in custody. Despite what Albus said, he wasn’t even trying to find the rat.”
“More I won’t argue about and agree with,” Severus nodded. “I put some in place with him, including implanting suggestions that will lead to him getting caught, it comes down to we just have to wait to see if it works. I’m not sure even if we had more time it would have done any good. While I wanted more time as well, I think the time had come we needed to get out. Harry has good instincts on some areas, better than we do, and he didn’t pull that out just to be with us. We could have managed again, just like we did last year. Something nudged him.”
Sirius thought that over, brow furrowing, then he gave a slow nod. “You’re right,” he said. “I’m sure the relationship factored in and he thinks that’s what drove it, but there is probably more.” With a sigh, he added, “It’s neither here nor there now. We’re out. Now it comes down to staying safe. Between all of us, we can manage that one.”
“Very true,” Severus agreed with a smirk. “Quite well, actually.” Then he looked around and said, “Let’s finish this and take a break. By the time we’re done, Harry should be done as well. Then we can press on.” Downing the last of his tea, he vanished the cup back to the kitchen then stood with a soft groan.
While Severus and Harry were upstairs grabbing something from the ballroom to use, Sirius was flopped on a newly recovered settee in the room they were working on, just relaxing. This would end up the second room they finished that day and he was tired. Sipping at his butterbeer, he let out a contented sigh. If they kept up at this pace, they’d have the downstairs done by early next week then could press on. While there was still much to do, they could all see the end.
With a soft groan, he propped his feet up on a hassock in front of him and slouched down, smiling. He felt plenty comfortable like this and wanted to remain there for a while. He just sat there until he heard a noise behind him. Not uptight as this was a safe place, he looked over his shoulder. There floated a ghost he hadn’t seen before. This was a man of rough appearance with wild black hair, a scraggly beard, and dressed in an older outfit which appeared vaguely like fashions you saw in old pictures from Russia.
Sirius straightened up and said, “Hello.” He wasn’t sure what else to say, assuming the ghost would introduce himself.
“You are Sirius,” the Mad Monk said, floating in. He then bowed deeply and added, “Dey call me da Mad Monk.” He then did a short version of the traditional Hopak dance, hanging upside down, before grinning almost manically.
With a laugh, Sirius applauded. “That’s great!” Having heard the nickname Mad Monk before from history, he asked, “You’re Rasputin then?”
“I prefer da name da Mad Monk, but, da, dat vas me,” the ghost told him, floating over and acting like he was seated on the arm of the settee.
“Good by me,” Sirius nodded. Thinking over the legends he heard about Rasputin, he then chuckled, saying, “Figured you were magical to survive all those assassination attempts.”
“Da,” the Monk nodded. “After da last few, I figured I needed to leave before dey succeeded. Sinze I had family in Europe, I vent there then came to da UK, vere I died eventually.”
“Good thing you did since they were really out for you,” Sirius laughed.
“Da,” the Monk told him with a manic grin. “Did it all as a joke while I helped so many, but it vent bad.”
“Good joke,” Sirius grinned. Then he began to ask about some of what he heard, wanting to hear the real story since he now knew the person was Magical.
More than happy to relay his pranks and adventures, the Mad Monk began explaining some of it, grinning as he remembered old fun times.
As he cast the spell again, Harry chuckled. As expected, his stag shot out the end of his wand and its mouth moved, but no sound came out. At least he got the mouth moving this time! They were trying to teach him how to make your Patronus talk. Like most spells, it was taking him more than a few times to get it right.
“You’re close,” Sirius told him, giving his shoulder a pat. Then he cast his, making sure Harry watched closely and to do it verbally.
Severus nodded as he watched the two then did it as well. However, something odd happened. The three Patroni seemed to stop then look at each other. After that, they merged, becoming the biggest tiger he had ever seen. Eyes widening, he watched it act like it was roaring then sat down, looking at the three of them.
“What the hell?” Sirius asked, stunned, not believing his eyes.
“How did we manage that?” Harry asked, brow furrowed.
“I don’t know,” Severus said honestly, looking at the tiger which glowed brilliantly with more detail than any Patronus he had ever seen before. Glancing at his hand and the wand there, the one they found in the secret room, he asked, “Are you two using the wands we found instead of your other ones?”
When the two confirmed they were, he nodded. “I think, maybe, it might be the reason for this, though I’m not sure. Because they’re triplets, it may mean they are identical and can do more. Not sure though.”
“Why a tiger, though?” Sirius asked, eyeing the cat. “None of us have a feline Patronus.”
“Not sure,” Severus sighed, watching as the cat laid down, curled up, tail batting softly. “They’re symbolic, so it must mean something.” However, he leaned back, wondering how long the Patronus would stay. Most didn’t hang about for long, dealing with a matter then vanishing. This one also seemed to act differently. It had him curious.
Harry just watched the cat, stunned, not sure what to think. “No matter the reason for it, the tiger is rather brilliant,” he finally said, grinning.
“Very true,” Severus agreed with a smirk, but his mind just kept focusing on the why. Since it wasn’t something drastic or needed figured out, he canceled the spell then told Harry, “Give it another try.” While he wanted Harry to work on the spell, he was also curious about what would happen if it combined again.
With a nod, Harry cast the spell then grinned when there were sounds this time, just not words. “I’m getting closer!” He laughed, canceling it.
“You are,” Sirius told him, ruffling his hair. “A few more times and you should have it.” He then urged him to do it again.
With a nod and determined look on his face, Harry did it again, wanting to get this down tonight so they could work on other things.
Eyes sliding open, Harry smiled as he listened to Sirius and Severus’ heavy breathing. A glance at the clock on the bedside table told him it was about one in the morning, so the other two were sound asleep. He just had a dream that woke him, nothing horrible.
As he lay there, he heard the wind picking up outside, rattling things around, but that was all, besides the noises of the two breathing. The first couple nights here it was actually hard to sleep since it was so quiet. He was used to plenty of noise around when he slept, so it was odd. Now he loved it. With a smile, he let his eyes drift shut then snuggled up closer to Severus, feeling Sirius’ hand grip his in his sleep. This felt perfect and he loved it.
Listening to the two as he lay there, he couldn’t help but feel good. This—it was what he wanted for so long. He had people with him who loved him for just who he was. He hadn’t had that before, other than friends. This was different than things with Ron and Hermione. He didn’t feel like the third wheel and these two didn’t get on his nerves like his friends did. And they were closer than like the Weasleys. Yeah, it felt good after having no one for so long.
He then wiggled around slightly, ensuring he didn’t wake Severus, and found the most comfortable spot, getting the blankets just right. This was perfect as far as he was concerned. Though there were already slight issues about not being able to go anywhere, he was dealing, adoring this enough it didn’t bother him as much as it normally would. They found plenty to do around the house and outside so far as he was sure the other two felt the same way, especially Severus.
When Severus mumbled and shifted slightly in his sleep, Harry waited for him to settle down then pressed closer. He noticed that Severus seemed to not sleep well, having plenty of nightmares. The curling up on each side of him seemed to help. Though he and Sirius didn’t always know they had shifted around this way, they usually ended up like this. That was fine as well. They all got the contact they wanted and it helped Severus.
As the wind whistled around the eves, rattling the glass in the panes, he gave a contented sigh then focused on the other two’s breathing. It wasn’t long before he drifted off again. However, as he did, he frowned at the nightmare that seemed to start almost immediately.
A concerned look on her face, Red floated into the main parlor where the others were gathered. When she came in, she asked Eddie, “Is there a problem?” She assumed there was from the grave look on his face and his want for this meeting.
“Yes,” Eddie nodded, looking concerned. After a glance around, he said, “The house picked up on someone trying to track our boys. It said it thinks it was Harry the person was looking for, though it can’t be sure.”
“The wards stopped it, did they not?” The Blue Lady asked, concerned, smooth brow furrowed slightly.
“Of course,” Eddie nodded. “However, I think this means we have to watch out more carefully. I checked the wards and spells again and they are as strong as we can get them, but we want to make sure our boys are safe.”
“We can start taking turns on a sort of a patrol at night to check around the property,” The Librarian suggested, glancing around.
“That won’t be needed,” Eddie said with a wave of his hand. “However, I do want us keeping track. If the alarm we hear goes off, check then have an elf make a note on a board I’ll have them set up. If it continues, I’ll bring the topic up to our boys. If not and it’s just this one time, we won’t worry about it.”
After hearing affirmations, he then answered questions the best he could. As he did, he felt trepidation. It had been a very long time since they had to worry about someone tracking those who lived here, so he was concerned about it. With all their boys were hiding from, it increased the worry. They would manage, but he felt they needed to stay alert for anything odd.
