Chapter 15
“We need to step up finding the Horcruxes, Albus,” Severus told the aging Headmaster after taking a sip of his tea. They were meeting that morning to figure out what to do about the locket, an item they were convinced was a Horcrux. So, they were going to dispose of it then go on from there to figure out what they could learn from it. “Not sure what your plans are for this,” there he stopped and glared at the scheming old man before continuing, “but the time has come where we need to find them. We can’t count on Potter, Black, and Lupin. I know you are, but they are making no move your direction or making noise like they’ll help this go ‘round.”
With a heavy sigh, slumping in his chair, Albus gave a reluctant nod, smoothing down his beard. “You are right, of course. While we do need the three and I’ll keep pressing them, we need to plow forward to find what we can.”
Pleased, for once the old goat didn’t need prodded hard the right direction, Severus said, “And we need more than just the two of us to find them. I can’t go out and beat the bushes for the objects as it would draw attention, the kind we don’t want. You can’t do it alone either with all that’s going on. Which means we need help.” Then he waited.
Thumbs twiddling, Albus thought it over, not liking the prospect, but being realistic in that they couldn’t do this alone. After several minutes of silence, he gave a reluctant nod. “We need more bodies, yes. However, we need to stay circumspect about who we recruit. I don’t want the whole Order knowing about these objects.”
“A line I wholeheartedly concur with.” Severus nodded, wondering where the spanner would end up tossed into the mix. Albus never agreed this easily to anything. Which meant the old man was plotting something else, probably something he wouldn’t like.
“We—well, I think we need those from the Order we know can keep a secret. Alastor comes to mind as one. We need more, though,” Albus told him slowly as his mind worked over the issue.
Though he groaned at the thought of dealing with Moody, he knew the ex-Auror was one of the best for the job. “Who else do you have in mind?” Severus asked, looking more dour than normal.
“Off the top of my head, I can’t decide. Give me a couple of days to think it over,” Albus told him, leaning back, foot tapping a rapid tattoo on the floor as his mind worked over his options. “I’ll find a few, don’t worry. It’s just going to take me time to sort out who I think is best.”
“We need to worry about the Prophecy as well, Albus,” Severus pointed out. “It’s not going away.” While he knew part of it, he didn’t all. With how many times Albus mentioned it, he was certain it factored into so much.
“More we do need to concern ourselves with,” Albus nodded. This was the easier part, honestly. He thought he could deal with the Prophecy as long as he didn’t have to tell anyone his interpretation of it.
“There is so much here, Albus,” Severus admitted, leaning back, stretching his long legs out in front of him, then crossing them at the ankles. “And we’re getting nowhere with it. We really need to push for us to do something to stop the complete takeover.”
“Indeed,” Albus admitted, slumping slightly. “Give me a couple of days to come up with something to decide a course of action then we’ll start moving faster.”
“We can’t afford to waste too much time, Albus,” Severus grumbled. “Enough has gone by that it’s left us in real trouble.”
Though Albus nodded, he said nothing. Severus was right, of course; much needed done. While everything Severus mentioned was true, the problem of Harry and how to draw him back in was at the forefront of his mind. They couldn’t succeed in anything without Harry. And working with him was proving harder than he anticipated.
Pleased Albus seemed like he was listening, Severus then began to rattle off several other things he thought they needed to tend to as quickly as they could manage. While Albus might not follow through, he wanted it out there.
“Don’t forget we’re doing the inspections tonight,” Sirius told Remus and Harry as he plowed through his breakfast. “And it’ll be late, long after everything is closed, including the taverns. Since it’s the weekend, we won’t have to worry about anything pressing tomorrow, thankfully. We have more to do tomorrow night as well. Since this is our first one, not sure how long it’ll take or what we’ll have to look into.”
“Remus,” he started, looking at him, “I want you to take notes on what needs done.”
“I will,” Remus told him with a small smile.
With a chuckle, he then said, “Harry, you’re the technical expert. While you don’t know exactly what all of this might be, you know enough to guess when there’s a problem or when something won’t work. I want you to say something if you see anything like it or take over questioning.”
“Easily done,” Harry grinned, taking another fork full of food. “Won’t have a problem with it either. I’ve read through enough of the paperwork on what they need to do that I have at least a basic grasp of what they have to put in place. That will help.”
“Which is more than we know,” Sirius laughed, reaching over to give Harry a nudge. “While we know the basics, you’re better with this than we are.”
“Much better,” Remus chimed in, smile growing.
Harry shook his head, still grinning, then took a bite of his food. “Understood,” he said after swallowing it.
“Since we’ll finish very early in the morning, I thought we might go out into Muggle London. While attractions and such are closed at that hour, plenty of restaurants aren’t. We can get a bite to eat and relax before coming home.” Sirius suggested.
“That sounds nice. Yes, we should,” Remus told him with a determined nod. “I’m sure there are other things we can find to do, though it won’t be like during the day.”
“There are plenty of movie theaters that are open all night,” Harry tossed out there, looking between the two. “As they aren’t crowded, we can catch one.”
“We haven’t been to one of those in a while,” Sirius grinned. “Yeah, we’ll find a good one and enjoy ourselves.”
“I do like the idea of less Muggles around,” Remus tossed in there. “While the three of us are good at acting like Muggles, I like the idea of going when there aren’t so many around.”
“Later today we’ll go out and pick up a Muggle paper to see what’s playing,” Sirius said, liking the idea.
“Anything else we have to do today?” Harry asked, looking around the table at the mail. Nothing for him, but there was plenty else dealing with the business.
“Just going through this, nothing more,” Sirius told him. “We can tend to that while you go back to work on the two floors. Once we have it sorted, we’ll do a second round in Regulus’ room and see if we can find anything he might have hid.” They did a quick look the day before and found nothing.
“We’ll start getting rid of the furniture as well, checking all of it before we do,” Remus said, sending his empty plate to the sink. “If we can’t find anything, I say we sort through your old room, Sirius. Might seem odd, but he may have left something in there, maybe for you to find. As you want it all boxed up and stored, we can sort as we work.”
“Good plan and we’ll go with it,” Sirius agreed with a nod as he polished off the last of his brekky. After a bracing sip of tea, he then added, heavy sigh to his voice, “If there is nothing in either room, we might have to do some exploring to see if he might have hidden it somewhere else, like for Mother or something. I don’t know.”
“Do you want me to just store the furniture or get rid of it?” Harry asked as he ate.
Brow furrowed, Sirius thought it over then said, “Store what’s in good shape. We can refinish it, some of the pieces anyway, because they’ll look good when we do. The rest just vanish. As you know, carpets, wall treatments, curtains, whatever like that goes. While I think we have all the pests gone, those are magnets for them. Best to get rid of them and start over.”
“Understood,” Harry said, already thinking of all he had to do. After all, he wanted to make it as nice as possible for their company. Besides, it would make the place more ‘theirs’ and get rid of the foulness that was here. “The elves are tackling getting rid of the oppressive atmosphere and working on the windows so we can open them. There is still a darkish taint to so much here. Not sure what they’re doing, they told me some kind of cleaning, but it’s working. The windows...they’re putting some spells on them so we don’t get the foul air and noise.”
“That’s fine,” Sirius told him.
“It’ll be nice to open the windows and let in fresh air like we did in California,” Remus told him. While it wouldn’t be the same, as California was different, he did like the idea.
Then he changed topics and asked, “Did you manage to find a way to explain to Hermione to knock it off?”
“Oh yes,” Harry told him with a slightly evil grin. “Was right blunt there. Doubt she’ll be happy with me over it. In fact, with how I worded it, she might send a Howler, so prepare for that.” Before either of them could say anything, he added, “I wasn’t mean about it, just putting my foot down. I doubt, with what I know of her, she’s going to like someone telling her to knock it off.”
“Her problem if she doesn’t,” Sirius shrugged.
“We’ll handle it as it comes,” Remus added, smiling just a little. “Hopefully she’ll handle it like an adult and adjust accordingly.”
“She won’t,” Harry snorted, rolling his eyes. “I’ll take it from there, though. I mean what I told her; this won’t go on if she wants to reconnect.”
“Stick to your wands there,” Sirius told him. Then he began covering some areas dealing with the business. While they didn’t have as much to do today as normal, they had some. He wanted them all on the same page with it so it went smoothly.
Eyes narrowed, face flushed, Hermione ground her teeth as she read through Harry’s letter. What she expected was an apology of some sort for all the worry they went through since he vanished. She didn’t expect him to give her a bollocking over her ‘attitude’ and ‘demanding’ answers. In fact, no one had ever said some of this to her before. They understood her blunt personality and went with it, like Ron. This—oh he would not get away with this!
After she finished reading it once, she went back and reread it to ensure she would remember everything he said as she would respond to it point by point.
Once the second reading was done, she put it down, trembling slightly, temper trying to get the better of her. The Harry she knew would never have said any of this! He would have given it up. Well, if she had anything to do with it, he would give it up, it would just take her some time.
When she put the letter aside, she was still trembling. Taking a sip of her tea to calm herself, she then let out a shaky sigh. Her mind was all over trying to figure out just how to respond in the best way to get him to cave then give her the answers she wanted. She thought that she would need to not only take a look over the letters he had written to her, but to Ron as well. Once she had a feeling for what she was dealing with, she would go from there.
Arms folded over her chest, she glared at the letter and let out an aggravated huff. Oh this—she wasn’t sure what to do, but planned to let Harry have it. She also planned to make it clear this ‘new’ Harry was someone she didn’t like.
Finishing off her tea, she shoved the letter aside. She wouldn’t answer it tonight as she needed time to not only calm down, but think. However, it was coming and she doubted there was anything she could do which would make it sound nice.
While Sirius and Remus took a nap after they worked on Regulus’ room, Harry planted himself in one of the comfortable chairs he had put in one of the rooms and watched the elves as they worked. As he did, he talked with Marissa. Since she was in school, they were doing it by text. Because of that, he wasn’t getting into too many serious topics. Mostly he talked about the redecorating, something she couldn’t wait to see. He did mention Hermione, though.
After she changed class and started her study hall, he explained the situation with Hermione to her, including what he said in the letter. As expected, Marissa huffed plenty, giving him advice on what he should do, though she told him she thought he went about it the best way. He replied that he didn’t plan to let this go on like it had in the past and would stand his ground. She agreed, something which shored up his choice. Then he grinned when she vowed to give Hermione a lesson in true friendship when she came over. That was his Marissa!
Not delving completely into that topic, they pressed on to more minor areas. He knew she only had this hour to talk then she had to go into a class she needed to pay attention to. Unlike most Witches and Wizards in the US, Marissa and his other friends didn’t go to Ilvermorny. Instead, they went to a very exclusive private school for their kind in California. Like most, his friends were welcome at the famous school, but the one they attended offered more subjects their parents wanted them to take. As plenty of those going to the private school were the children of high powered and, sometimes, famous people, this school offered more in the lines of protection for them. Not to mention it wasn’t a boarding school, something all of them liked.
When her study period was over, Harry gave a soft sigh, but said goodbye, making sure to send her the document with stuff he wanted her to pick up for him. It wasn’t anything huge, stuff like movies, some food he couldn’t here, and the like, but it was normal. Then he signed off. Putting his phone in his lap, he looked out the window, smiling a tad. Though he hadn’t felt bad when he began texting her, he felt better now. She always had that effect on him and had since they met. It was just something between them. They often joked that if they had been straight, they would have been soulmates or some such romantic codswallop. As it was, she was always there for him and he for her. It worked for them and they went with it.
A heavy sigh escaping him, he smiled then looked around the room he was in. He had plenty to do so the floors were ready when their guests arrived. Since Sirius and Remus were letting him tend to this, he would get on it so he was sure it was not only done, but looked great.
Harry stood and stretched with a groan. Then he went to check on the elves’ work.
As the clock in his office struck midnight, Albus let out a weary sigh then his chin dropped down to his chest, eyes going shut. He was tired, plenty tired. The night had been spent pouring through books, notes, and anything else he had on the Horcruxes. While he now had a few more leads, he certainly didn’t have enough to find them, just hints.
With a shake of his shaggy head, he straightened up then thanked the elf who popped in with some strong sweet tea he hadn’t asked for, but needed. After a healthy sip, he let out a contented sigh. While not fully energized yet, this would help him become so.
Over the years, he had worked here and there on the Horcrux issue, but always felt he had time to finish before he would need to. Other matters drew his attention as they were urgent, so he neglected the hunt for what could end the war. That was a huge mistake. Now they were at the juncture where they needed them and he didn’t have any idea where they were. It was his fault. He now had to scramble to figure it out, what he was doing.
Downing the tea and pouring more, he then leaned back, summoning the Pensieve so he could look at the memories he collected once he finished drinking. They would hold some clues, but not everything they needed. One—he thought it would relate to the locket, which meant they could exclude that part. The others weren’t as easy.
As he looked at his desk, his mind naturally drifted to Harry. While he needed him, that was the one area he had time with. The Horcruxes came first, then he could work on getting Harry into the fight. He thought he could try a little now, slowly drawing him in, then when it came time for the fight, Harry would be ready. In the mean time, he would work on the Horcruxes. None of this could end without those. They could tend to them, of course, as he now knew how to destroy one, and would. Then Harry would step in to not only get rid of the one in his scar, but end the fight once and for all.
Taking a biscuit when they appeared on his desk, he began to eat, eyes scanning the mass of papers all over. There was much to go through yet without figuring in the memories. Those he would look through first then go from there.
Finishing the biscuit, he dusted off this hands and beard then grabbed the first memory. It was time to get to work.
