Over the next three days Severus was amazed to find that he could go nearly everywhere he wanted, including outside. He enjoyed sitting in the sunlight reading, he had gone swimming (though Hermione yelled at him when Luna told her that he was indeed skinny-dipping) and he was allowed to go to the kitchens whenever he wanted to get his favorite foods. He pushed his limits as far as he could to find where he wasn’t allowed to go, the attic was off limits, Hermione’s office, the other death eaters bedrooms, Luna’s bed when he was in there and his bed for Luna when she visited him. The magic leading to the front gates got him all turned around and he always ended up back in front of the manor again. In fact anytime he got too close to the gates he would be turned around and sent back to the manor. Even with all these spells and rules in place he never felt trapped or even like he was in a hospital it was almost like he was living in a private home and merely surrounded by a bunch of people he otherwise wouldn’t normally invite over.
He was only slightly surprised to find that Luna Lovegood was a highly intelligent young woman who had really loved her daughter. Luna told him numerous times that her baby was perfectly healthy, that she was the perfect baby and only had a little cough and cold and then…she was gone. He was sympathetic because he could only imagine what it would be like to lose something you loved so much…maybe it wasn’t only imagining when he considered how much he had loved Lily. But his love for her seemed to be getting a little further away from him. He still loved her, missed her and wished that she had given him the time of day but it was in the past. Now, he felt that maybe he should work hard to get out of the hospital and try to date…he had a pretty good idea who he wanted to date too. He raised his eyes when a person in a cloak walked by him heading towards Hermione’s office, he was about to stop the person when Bridget walked by and spoke to him. She walked to Hermione’s door and opened it.
“Miss Granger” She said “You have a visitor here and are you busy tonight at five because Mr. Potter and Mr. Malfoy sent a note saying that they are going in to the muggle world for dinner if you wanted to come with them”
“Thank you let him in” Hermione said “And I do have plans” Hermione smiled “Severus and I are having a picnic, right Sev?” She called out to him where he was lurking in the hallway, she was sad to say that since taking over the hospital a month ago she had been too busy to really visit with him or talk with him.
“S-s-sure” He answered.
“I will have Mr. Snape ready for four then” Bridget said “Is that okay?”
“Yes, sounds perfect” Hermione answered and watched as she closed the door “Okay, what can I do for you today…”
“Hermione” Ron said pulling his hood down to reveal his thin, worried face “Please, don’t scream, I won’t hurt you!”
“Ronald” She said “You can’t be here!”
“Here” He threw his wand on to the desk between them and he held up his hands “You have my wand my hands are right here” He waved them from near his head “Just hear me out, please”
“What is there to hear?” She asked “You aided in the attempted murder of asylum patients!”
“I didn’t!” He said desperately “Please…I didn’t do it, Astoria and Ginny brought it up to me but I couldn’t do that!” He looked down “I am many things Hermione and you could name all of them but please, think back over the years you’ve known me and tell me if murderer is even one of them?”
“Ronald” She put the wands in her pockets and looked at her hands for a moment “Ginny told us that it was you and Astoria working with her, she told us that under Veritaserum”
“Veritaserum” He repeated shaking his head “She has been building an immunity to that for years, she was so different after her first year which was only to be expected but she was studying harder and longer, stealing stuff from other people, using them and practicing potions in an abandoned classroom in the dungeons or in the basement at home” He looked at her “I thought that it was innocent and by the time I realized that it wasn’t, well…it was too late”
“I don’t know” She said “I’d have to…”
“Research it” He said quickly “I will hide until then”
“But” She started.
“Please” He said “Give me my wand and allow me to hide, write to me when you know something” He held his hand out for a wand and looked at her pleadingly. She sighed and against her better judgement she handed it back to him, if he had wanted to hurt her he could have many times already. He outweighed her, had his wand at first and the ability to spring a surprise attack on her and he did nothing, even allowed her to take his wand.
“Okay” She said “I will look in to it”

Hermione sat on a blanket with Severus outside by the very lake he tried to skinny-dip in. He was watching her, his keen black eyes taking in every sigh, the way her eyes would look around before looking at her hands again. She was distracted, not that it really bothered him, he wasn’t the sort to become jealous because she wasn’t paying attention to him at all times. But he worried that she was taking on too much and thought that maybe he should tell Draco the next time he came to visit his father.
“Lucius twitched this morning” Severus said extremely slowly. He found that if he spoke very slowly then he could do it without stuttering “When I called to him he even reached out to me but has yet to wake up”
“I was hoping he would be awake by now” Hermione sighed.
“I thought he w-would be” Severus said “I m-must have t-taken more a-antidote than h-him”
“It’s okay” She smiled and leaned over to him kissing his cheek and surprising him in to looking at her “I’m just happy that you are all safe”
“What is w-wrong?” He asked “I can t-tell something is off” Hermione looked at him and then launched in to the whole story about Ron’s visit and couldn’t stop herself from questioning about the possibility of it being true before falling in to silence again.
“It is possible to build up an immunity” He said thinking about each word before saying it “It would t-take y-years-s”
“She would have had the time” Hermione said “What happened with Voldemort in the Chamber of Secrets would have made her suspicious and with no one figuring anything out would have made her realize that to get answers they would need Veritaserum, so she would make sure that they would never get answers from her”
“It’s i-intelligent” He said “I also t-think I’ve f-figured out M-Miss Lovegoods-s c-case”
“What is it?” She asked eagerly.
“Her d-daughter was s-sick with a r-respiratory sickness” He answered “B-breathing p-problems”
“Yeah” Hermione led “I always had that when I was a baby”
“But did y-your p-parents lay you d-down in a d-dusty c-closet on your s-stomach?” He asked and she shook her head “Have you ever heard of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome?”
“No one can really prove that!” Hermione said.
“They have proven that a b-baby is a-at higher r-risk of SIDS” He informed “I-If t-that the b-baby was already s-sick could m-mean something”
“It’s better than thinking my friend is a murderer” Hermione said slowly.
“A-and” He pointed out “SIDS is n-nearly unheard-of in t-the W-Wizarding W-World, as f-families g-generally have house-elves to take c-care of the b-babies at a-all t-times”
“I have to look in to it” Hermione said “How are you doing?”
“G-Good” He smiled.
“You are speaking more” She offered “And I really do love hearing your voice” She blushed and he smiled.
“Thank you” He said slowly “What a-are you going t-to do about R-Ronald Weasley?”
“I don’t know” She answered “Part of me says turn him in and the other part points out that he could have hurt me many times in our meeting and never even tried”
“With fear” He said “Of s-sounding like a d-damned Hufflepuff, I have to s-say that you know h-him b-better than most and that maybe you sh-should r-really think about the man you know b-before acting r-rashly”
“Your right” She smiled “As usual, you’re right”
