Chapter 15
After tossing Sirius the bag his mum sent along, Bill took a seat at the table in Grimmauld Place with a soft groan. “Mum said for me to tell you if you even mention paying her for that she'll land enough stinging hexes on your arse that you won't be able to sit for a month,” Bill told him with a chuckle, grinning a tad.
“Understood,” Sirius nodded, grinning himself. After pushing the bag of Molly's homemade beef jerky aside, he waited for Fred and George to take a seat then asked, looking between the three, “Is everyone fine?” After a glance at the new scars on the twin's faces and seeing the two fingers missing on Bill's left hand, he amended, “As well as can be expected, anyway. Ron went to St. Mungos, from what I heard. So did you three.”“We're good,” Bill assured him. “Nothing they can do much about, honestly, and nothing overly serious.” Holding up his hand with the missing fingers, he said, “They're gone for good. Cursed off. Ron lost a chunk of his shoulder, but it was just the fleshy part and a bit of muscle. He'll be fine.” Nodding to Fred and George, he added, “They just have some curse scars. Hermione had her hair jinxed off, which produced some hysterics, but it'll grow back. She's using a wig right now and Snape gave her a potion to help it grow faster. In a month, she'll have enough back she won't have to wear the wig. All in all, we came out pretty good. Dad has some minor cuts, scrapes and spell burns. Mum had to reverse a jinx that was making her puke flowers. Albus lost part of his beard. The rest is just minor.”“We were lucky,” Fred added softly.
“Very lucky,” George nodded.
cooked meal.”
“I'll say something to her and dad when we get home, but I doubt she will have any problem doing so,” Bill told him honestly. “She's well aware what he did and how he saved plenty. A home cooked meal is quite a minor price to pay for how many he helped.”“My thoughts,” Sirius nodded. “Going to talk to him today. Already set up the meeting to cover what I know and pick up on anything else he might have heard. Not sure there as the town is in shambles. His place is fine, so you never know.”“We wanted to know if you'd put in a good word for us so he takes us on as clients,” Fred started.“Severus says he can get his hands on some harder to find bits, what we need.” George continued on.“Nothing illegal, mind you, just tough to find,” Fred assured him.“And we'll pay whatever,” George nodded. “Some of our suppliers aren't the best.”“Very unreliable as well,” Fred groused, shaking his head.“Let me see what I can do,” Sirius told the two, hearing Remus chuckle, grinning a tad himself as he knew whatever they obtained would be used for their joke shop.“Anything else we need to know?” Remus asked, looking between the three. As Fred and George agreed to help, he wanted to check in.“Nothing so far. We've been a tad occupied with everything going on to do too much,” Bill sighed.“We have part and are going through it to see what we can find,” Fred assured him.“Give us time,” George added with as groan. “It's taking a bit. Nothing is standing out so far, though.”“Our thought was to go through everything and see if we can spot anything you lot missed before pressing on,” Fred told them. “It'll take us a bit.”“In your own time,” Sirius told them. He knew the two were busy and this would take its place behind their obligations. “Just let us know if you do find anything.”“We're going to try,” George assured him with a nod.“If it's there or we see anything, we'll let you know,” Fred agreed.“Anything we need to know after this mess?” Bill asked, looking around.“Just to expect it to grow worse,” Remus sighed, looking downtrodden. “Severus was over and he said You-Know-Who is hopping mad this didn't work like he wanted. He's trying to figure out who leaked it. From what Severus said, Lucius isn't being looked at, but some of the lower level Death Eaters who have loose lips are. Hank is safe as he thinks it was just general whatever in bars since they like to brag. He's trying to figure out which one.”“Aberforth easily took the 'rap' for passing it,” Sirius added. “His name is listed in the DMLE as an informant anyway. Everyone and their bleeding aunt know what the Hog's Head is like and how some run their mouths. With Hank supposedly not around, he won't be looked at, thankfully.”“Good,” Bill said with a pleased nod. “We need what he can give us, especially when it's this big.”“We agree,” Remus told him. “Kingsley did as well, hence the reason he made sure no one knew he talked to Hank and his name isn't listed anywhere. He took great pains to ensure no one saw them talking. Spells prevent people from knowing who that reward went to as well.”With a chuckle, Sirius added, “With as big of a payout as he received for this, I'm going to bet he'll do a bit more. Kingsley made sure to tell him even information which leads to bringing down Death Eaters or plots they can prevent will garner him money. As Hank is all about money, I'm sure it'll lead to a bit more we can use.”“Hey, if it works, it works,” Fred chuckled.“And gets us what we need, we'll be happy,” George agreed with a nod.“My thought as well,” Sirius told them. “Kingsley agreed. From what we know of Hank's clients, I'm sure he can pass us plenty to help. I agreed to pass information directly to Kingsley if it's big enough so Hank will give it up and garner the reward. I'm sure it'll loosen up plenty.”“Any little bit helps,” Bill admitted, though happy they finally had something which was working. Then he began asking about any new information on the hunt for Harry to make sure there wasn't any. If they were all kept up to speed, they'd be more effective.
“Are you certain about bringing Hank here, Sirius?” Remus asked after everyone cleared out. While he knew the answer, he wanted to hear Sirius' reasoning behind it.
“Absolutely,” Sirius nodded after a sip of his drink. “Look, he wants no part of the Order, period, especially Albus. He's made that as clear as he can. And he's given his reasons. Bringing him through the wards won't be an issue. Honestly, it’s not like he’s going to turn up randomly. I'll just make sure everyone clears out before I bring him in so he doesn't feel bombarded.”“My thought is it will also show trust which can help,” he then added. “You met him. While he's intimidating, he's not bad. Far better to deal with than like Ron and Hermione. We won't get into some others. He's not like Dung in he'll use the foray to steal whatever. It'll just be a nice dinner where we can talk. I would offer to take it to his place, but not sure how it would end up going over. This is the better way to go about it.”“One of the other bits I was considering was letting him get used to you. If he can't get in contact with me for whatever reason, you would be the next best thing,” Sirius explained. “I'd have you pop in while we're eating so he doesn't feel overwhelmed, but let him know you're fine.”After pondering Sirius' reasons, Remus gave a slow nod. “I think I understand now. Yes, this might work. Add on if it's that urgent, he can pop over without being seen. His shop is nice and protected, from what I saw, but it's still in a high traffic area. We all know we can get in here without being seen. Yes, this is a good idea, Sirius.”“I thought so,” Sirius told him. “Look, Hank's odd, I admit it, but I like him. I also think showing some trust might help matters. We all know the more someone trusts you and the more you loosen up then trust them, the more help you get. Honestly? My instincts are telling me to trust him, that he won't screw us over. He loves his money, won't tell you otherwise, but he's made it just as clear he wants no part of the other side, and won't help them. That's not a bluff, from what I've seen either. I know how he talks about Lucius. With what he did to Bella and the others then his reasons why, I think we can trust him.”“More points well taken,” Remus admitted after pondering it. “Yes, this might be the way to go. Just let us know the night you have him over so we can ensure we’re not besieged the way it is some nights. We'll set up an alternate way to deal if something big happens.”“Will do,” Sirius said with a smile. This was good. He liked the idea anyway, for plenty of reasons, though the ones he gave were valid. Now he just had to wait and see what Hank said.
Hank chuckled as Yama flapped over and landed on the arm of the chair Sirius sat in, almost before his arse was fully in the seat. “What do you have?” He asked, entirely amused since he assumed it was something his companion would love for him to act this way.
“Just what I promised him while he was helping yesterday,” Sirius grinned, pulling out a six pack of the finest beer he could get his hands on and the jerky Molly made. Tossing the yammering bird a couple slices, he then popped the top on one of the bottles of beer and conjured a glass before sitting it down for the bird to drink. “Had Molly make some jerky up for him as a reward.” He then tossed Hank one of the beers. “Best I could get my hands on.”After a look at the label of the dark German beer, Hank gave a nod at it, smirking a bit. He then cracked it open and took a swallow. “Oh, this is good,” he admitted, downing more.“Yeah, it is,” Sirius admitted, tossing Yama another piece of jerky before putting the bag on the desk and pushing it over to Hank. “She made him up a ton of it, so he'll be happy for a while.”“He will,” Hank said, tucking it in the desk drawer to take home with him. “Anything I need to know?” He then asked, getting down to business. As Sirius set up the meeting, he assumed there was from the fallout of the battle.“A few bits,” he said then launched into them. When he finished, he said, “You are protected the best we can manage. Aberforth will tell people it was him who gave it up. With him being Albus' brother, people should know not to say too much around him, but they do. Other than that, we've taken great pains to ensure no one knows you talked. Our spy says You-Know-Who is irate, but he doesn't think it was Lucius, but someone else, the sort who run their mouths. From what we know, everyone thinks you left. You're good and protected.”“Perfect,” Hank agreed, relieved. While he would do it again, he didn't want it known he was the one who talked. “I do have a question about this mess,” he then pressed on. When Sirius nodded, he asked, “Any idea why he wanted the castle? I understand it would be easier to take as it's summer, but it doesn't make much sense to try when none of the students are there.”“We think it was just a show of power,” Sirius grumbled, shaking his head. Relaxing in his chair, he petted Yama, who stayed right where he was, having settled down and was cleaning his feathers. “He knew if he had the school, it would cause chaos, for plenty. We also think he might want something in the school for information of some sort as Albus spends most of the year there. Not sure.”“Makes sense,” Hank admitted after pondering it. “I'm sure causing chaos factored in, what with all he pulled here in town. Plenty are still repairing and rebuilding after it.”“It was a show of power there,” Sirius told him with a firm nod. “He knew what he was doing and what it would cause. Not to mention the panic which would ensue. While he didn't show his snake face during the battle, everyone knew he was behind it. We also think it's just a step to keep everyone on their toes and to remind them he's around without having to make a huge move, like taking the Ministry.”“I can see that as well,” Hank admitted, relaxing as he sipped his beer.Sirius then pressed on, “I have a couple of people who are asking if you'd take them on as clients. Rest assured, I know them personally and what they want is legit,” he said then told him a bit about Fred and George. When he finished, he added, “They want a better supplier for what they need and someone who can get their hands on some hard to get ingredients.”“They're the ones who run the joke shop in the Alley?” Hank asked, sliding back and looking for the standard letter he had for new clients which gave the basic rules and how to contact him to set up the first appointment. These were the sort of clients he didn't mind taking on as they were good business without causing problems the way some others did.“That's them,” Sirius nodded. “Good blokes. Jokers, of course, and close, but won't cause you problems. One of your other clients mentioned what you can get for him and they want in.After finding the letter, he passed it over to Sirius and said, “I'll take them on. You're a good enough reference. Give that to them and tell them to follow the instructions. If they can't do something so simple, they won't get a response.”“Will do,” Sirius told him, sliding the letter into his pocket to pass along to them later. “I'm sure they'll give you a ton of business because of what they need.”“Good,” Hank nodded with a bit of a smirk. “The more the better with that sort of area. I'll go over what they need when they set up their first appointment. Nothing to worry about.”“They won't be a problem, you have my word,” Sirius assured him once more. Then he added, grinning just a little, “They're a right riot if you ask me. Drive their mum spare, but good blokes. A big success as well.”Then, sliding back to business, he asked, “You heard anything?” He didn't assume so, what with the day before and all, but you never knew.“No, not dealt with any from that end of the pissing contest.” Hank told him honestly, leaning back again and sipping the delicious beer. “Not surprising. All I've seen today is the legitimate clients who just want hard to get areas, nothing dodgy. I'm sure I'll hear some after the mess yesterday.”“Didn't think so, but wanted to check in to make sure,” Sirius told him honestly. Then he pressed on to the next bit. “I wanted to invite you to dinner at my place as thanks for the help you gave us.” Stopping, he then waited to see what Hank had to say.It took all of Hank's self control not to let the shock he felt show on his face at the invitation. This was something that hadn't ever happened to him before. He wasn't the sort of person people invited to dinner as too many were wary of him and the general distrust of those he associated with was always there. And he wasn't sure how to react, just sitting there in stunned silence.Sirius quickly added, so Hank didn't end up wary, “Nothing off, my word. A friend will fix the dinner as she's the best cook in the world, and we'll be left alone. The only one who might come around is Remus. You met him and know he's good. Just my way of thanking you for what you did. While you have an elf, it's not the same as a good home cooked meal by someone who knows what they're doing. Thought Sunday might be good as you said that's the day you can wiggle.” Then he waited, not sure what the response might be.“Yeah, I can manage,” Hank finally said, still stunned. It was just so odd he wasn't sure what to do. Though wary, since he knew Sirius' home was Order headquarters, he couldn't resist. “Just so you realize Yama comes with.”“That's fine,” Sirius said with a grin, petting the bird which hadn't left the arm of the chair since he sat down. “I'll set it up and owl you the time. Nothing wonky, my word. We'll eat and shoot the shit like we've been doing. And I'll give you a tour of the house. Should interest you as it's unusual.”“Sounds good,” Hank nodded, the tiniest of smiles forming on his face. He liked this idea, though it was odd for him and something he hadn't done before.Sirius then looked at Yama and chuckled, “No eating Hedwig, though! She's a good bird and we need her.”“Your owl I take it?” Hank asked with a chuckle. The more he thought about this, the more he liked it and wanted to attend.“Well, mine and Remus'. We share. Since he stays there most of the time, it didn't make sense to own two owls,” Sirius explained with a shrug. “She's good, very calm.” Then he went on to describe the snowy owl to him.“He won't bother her, my word,” Hank assured him. “He's rather good with owls, actually, as long as they don't try to attack, deliver anything dangerous or cop an attitude with him.”“She won't, trust me,” Sirius assured him with a smile, still petting Yama, actually liking the fact the bird was letting him and seemed as though he was enjoying it. “The only person she really doesn't like of those who are always around is Dung.”“She has good taste then,” Hank snorted, smirking once more.“Yeah, my thoughts,” Sirius laughed. “He has his uses, but is generally the sort you can't trust.”“Wouldn't trust Dung as far as I could throw him, especially if there are any kind of bits laying around worth money. You'd find them in his pocket before he left.” Hank chuckled. “He has his uses, I agree as I use him for various bits, but you need to stay wary when dealing with him and know what you're working with.”“Tend to agree,” Sirius grinned. He then began to talk about some of the more memorable instances of Dung and some of what he had done. Since the hour he booked was almost up, he wasn't going to get into anything heavy. However, he was more pleased than he cared to admit that Hank accepted the invitation. While he wanted to do this to thank him, just as he said, it was more than that. He wanted to get to know Hank better and could talk more intimately about certain bits at home since he didn't have to worry about them being overheard. It was better this way because they didn't have to worry about anyone seeing them together either. Perfect as far as he was concerned.
After Sirius left, Hank just stared at the door he exited out of, smiling a little. When Yama came over and perched on his chair, he reached into the drawer and grabbed some of the jerky Sirius brought then tossed it to his companion. “It was nice he brought you something,” he observed.
Yama quickly devoured the jerky then clicked his beak repeatedly, hissing.“Yeah, he's a good one,” Hank observed, still looking at the door. Then, quietly, he admitted, “I like the idea of going to dinner at his place. Not something we've done before and no one has ever offered. Closest we've come is someone taking us out somewhere. This'll be new.” Then he smiled again and added, “Makes one feel rather special, honestly.”Still staring at the door, he smiled bigger. Yeah, he'd enjoy this, a lot. While he wanted a fuck buddy and to have some fun, he found he just plain liked being around Sirius. Maybe this was destined to end up more than just some fun in the sack. If it did? Well, he wouldn't complain in the least.Only problem was he wasn't sure how to deal with such a relationship as he never had one. It wasn't something he'd ever pondered or hoped for, honestly. He wasn't the sort people wanted those kind with, well, most. There had been some birds who had, the sort attracted to the bad boys. They weren't his type anyway and he tended to avoid them. Others didn't try with him. With a shake of his head, he pulled his eyes away from the door then focused back on his desk. There was plenty to do despite the fact it was a slow day for customers because of the mess yesterday. While he didn't like that the money wasn't as good as on normal days, it did give him a chance to deal with some bits and organize. Those things were always needed. If he tackled it now, he wouldn't have to take time away from other bits to take it on. So, he was going to take advantage and get to it.“Right,” he told Yama, “we have work to do. Going to need your help with part of this and putting bits where they belong. I think we should work on the cabinet as well. More expansion charms are needed. And I think we need to duplicate it so we have more room. If we start now, we can finish in an hour or so. Then we'll go somewhere for something to eat. Not sure after that, but we'll find something.”After ruffling his feathers and letting out a hiss, Yama hopped onto his usual spot on the desk, looking around, wings outstretched a bit. This was normal, so he knew what was coming. Between the two of them they would finish fast enough.Hank started the sorting, opening the cabinet to send the basics there. Once everything was off and out of his desk, he would tackle the cabinet. As he worked, his mind kept drifting to Sirius. When it did, he would smile. Yeah, he liked Sirius, a lot. More than he cared to admit, and in ways he didn't anticipate. Now he would wait to see where it led and Sirius' leanings. He just hoped the man felt the same way he did.
