Chapter 16

Severus' POV

I didn't know what to make of the look Alex' father gave us. At least he hadn't been looking at me as if I was vermin, it was an improvement compared to her mother's behaviour earlier that week. As soon as he ordered us out of the hospital wing, I had fully expected Black to bolt. Instead he turned to me 'care to find out if this door has an privacy spell on it?' he asked. I rolled my eyes at him, something I'd picked up from Alex 'of course it does'. He looked surprised that I knew. 'If it wouldn't everyone would be able to find out about the condition of any given student who's in here.' He was quiet for a moment, considering that. 'Too bad, I wanted to have a word with Mr Zabini, now we won't know when he leaves.' Thad piqued my curiosity, why on earth would he want to have a word with Alex' father? 'I wanted to ask his permission to take Lex to the Malfoy engagement ball as my date.' I held back a smile when he said that. Regulus had told me earlier that Alex was going with him. Maybe Black hadn't heard of that yet. He was waiting for any kind of reaction from me. 'I thought you were going to confront him with your research?' I asked.

'I would, but my theory has been proven correct by Lex herself' he said. He looked pensive for a split second, I was sure Black couldn't concentrate for longer than that. 'Do you think she meant to show us anyway?' he asked. I shook my head 'are you insane?' I said 'She knows that anyone who finds out can turn her into the ministry, and she'd be stripped of her magic en put back into muggle society.' I had read those were the consequences for people who were discovered to possess this kind of magic. That's why they were so rare, the ministry didn't allow them to exist, they were considered dangerous. 'You think she doesn't trust us enough to tell us? Black interrupted my line of thought.

'I'm sure her father has taught her never to trust anyone with her secret'

'Then why did she use it?' he wanted to know.

'She wanted to protect me, but she couldn't get to her feet to do so. She helped in the only way that seemed possible to her.' He nodded in agreement. 'She'd rather be exposed than have you hurt you mean?' he said. I didn't know how to answer that, I never knew where I stood with Alex. I was sure she was way out of my league, yet here I was, longing for a girl who would never be mine. 'I don't know' I answered Black truthfully.

He sat down on the ground next to the door, and put his head against the wall. I couldn't stop pacing, I kept on thinking about Alex exposing herself to protect me. I hoped she knew that I would never turn her in. Despite his many faults, I couldn't see Black doing so either, it was clear that, even tough I didn't like it, he cared a lot about Alex as well.

'Hello, I'm talking to you' Black's voice interrupted my thoughts again, his tone suggested that he'd asked me something and I failed to reply.

'What, sorry I was lost in thought' I told him. 'I asked if you also feel that current when we touch her?' I nodded, and sat down beside him. 'Yes, it felt like electricity ran trough my hand, and arm when we both touched her. It’s been getting stronger, the more she’d healed. I've never felt it before when I touched her.'

'Yeah, me neither'

We sat quietly for a moment, waiting for Mr Zabini to come trough the doors, so we could go back in.
Again it was Black who broke the silence. Either he loved the sound of his own voice, or he couldn't stand silence. I thought it was probably the first.
'Say Snape, I wanted to apologise for cursing you the other day' I felt my jaw fall open, what was this, Black apologising to me? That was new!
'I'm very sorry, I shouldn't have done it, you didn't provoke me, or harmed me, so I have no excuse for my behaviour.' I held up my hand to stop him, and with my other hand I fingered my wand. I was sure his cronies were out here waiting to curse me.
'It's fine' I told him.

'Will you please tell her I apologised?' he asked me.
So that was it? Alex had told him he had to apologise to me?
'She said she'd forgive me if I did, so I held up my end of the bargain.
'I'll be sure to tell her' I said, ‘if you let me take her to the Halloween dance' this might just turn out in my favour.
He considered that for a moment. It was the best deal he was going to get out of me, seen as I wouldn’t be invited to the Malfoy engagement, he'd have a free reign there. I could almost see him working that out. 'Deal' he said, and we shook hands.
The door opened, and Mr Zabini emerged. 'Good luck' I added quietly to Black as I made my way back inside to Alex.

AN: Short one again, but the next few chapters will be more interesting I promise.
I'll be very busy the next few weeks, so I hope you enjoy reading this, for I'm not sure when I can update.
