Hermione looked at Draco, her heart sank. He nodded at her, as if he knew that he was going to die there. "We can’t leave them” Harry yelled. Hermione took a deep breath. She turned her broom around and her friends followed her. Harry grabbed Draco, but failed and the boys fell back, clasping the edge of the pile and dangling over the fire. But Harry and Ron tried again and this time, they succeeded. Hermione’s heart skipped a beat and she let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding. They flew though the exit and then everything went very quick .Harry destroyed the diadem and kicked it into the fire. The doors of the room shut and they disappeared. Harry collapsed on the floor, the visions of Voldemort hitting him like a punch in the face. Hermione raced over to him. He told her there about the snake, about where he would be. “We’ve got to go after him” Ron said. Hermione bit her lip and looked at the other boy. Draco Malfoy was lying on the floor, his body was burnt by the fire and he was in pain. “You go, I’m staying here and I’ll take care of him” she nodded her head towards Malfoy . “What? Hermione, just leave him!” Ron shrieked. “He’s hurt Ronald, look at him. He needs help.” She answered. “Someone else..” Ron started. “Who? Who is going to help him if not me?” Ron bit his lip, unable to give her any more reasons. “We’ll come find you after, okay?” Harry squeezed her hand and she nodded. Her friends turned and ran into the dark corridor. Hermione rushed to Draco’s side, falling on her knees beside him. “Draco?” she whispered his name as her hand cupped his cheek. His eyes stayed shut, knocked out. Hermione looked at the rest of his body. He had burns all over, his white shirt stained with blood. Hermione pulled the essence of Dittany out of her bag and took a deep breath. If Ron’s splinging repair had hurt, this would be tenfold. She unbuttoned his shirt to expose the burnt flesh underneath. She opened the bottle and drizzled the liquid over the wounds. Draco’s eyes flew open and he started writhing and screaming in agony. Hermione wasn’t strong enough to hold him down. She grabbed his face in her hands. “Malfoy!” she yelled. He didn’t respond and continued struggling against her grip. “Draco!” she yelled again. His eyes shot up at her. “It’s me, I have to do this? You understand, it’ll only hurt a second, please, just let me do this” she pleaded. He bit his lip an nodded slightly. Hermione let go of him and continued her work. Draco’s body was tense as he was fighting the urge to break free and struggle. A couple of minutes later it was over. The wounds had shut, leaving only red scars on his chest. The pain had subdued to a dull ache. Hermione sat back against the cold stone wall of the hallway. Her head tilted backwards. She sighed. Draco sat down next to her, moaning as he righted his body. “Thanks” he whispered. Hermione didn’t answer. She didn’t know what to say. She wondered how it was possible that no one had found them yet. The fighting outside was still going on. She felt Draco’s hand grab hers. It sent a jolt of electricity through her entire body and made her want to run away. She stood up and jerked her hand back. “I have to go help” she stated. “What? Go out there to fight? No” he almost yelled at her. “It’s not your call Malfoy” she answered and ran away from him. She was vaguely aware of footsteps behind her.
When she reached the courtyard it was chaos all over the place. There were giants, huge spiders, knights made of stone and of course witches and wizards. They were all fighting. Hermione started running through the rubble, she had to get through, had to reach Harry and Ron. She dodged a spell flying her way and ducked behind a big wall. She took a deep breath and peered over the side of the wall, sending red sparks from her wand. Just as she turned back, the wall was hit by a green spark. Sending pieces of it into the air. She closed her eyes and kept them shut while taking a deep breath. One more breath and she would lunge out of there and run for the bridge. She opened her eyes and darted from behind the wall. She didn’t get far though; a hand grabbed her arm and pulled her back behind the wall. She was slammed against the wall pretty hard and she heard her skull crack as her head hit the stone. She opened her eyes and saw Draco’s. His hands were next to her head against the wall and he was towering over her, keeping her in place. He was panting, like he had been running too. “Are you completely out of your mind?” he yelled. She didn’t answer but felt annoyed at the fact that he thought she had needed saving. “You could get killed” he continued. “So could Harry and Ron if I don’t help” she said calmly. “Well I don’t care about Potter or the weasel” he hissed. “But I do” she answered and ducked under his arms. She was fast, but he was faster and stronger. He yanked her back against the wall. “You can’t go out there” he said. “It’s not like I need your permission, Malfoy, I can decide for myself” she answered. “You’ll get yourself killed.” He answered. “Thank you for trusting in my abilities as a witch” she sarcastically replied. “It’s not that, but he’s out there Hermione, Voldemort and his entire army” Draco pleaded. “You came here with them, you are a part of their army, remember?” she commented, the anger and resent bleeding from her voice. “I’m not here for them” he said, biting his lip. She didn’t say anything. “I’m here for you” he finally said. “If only I could believe that” she smiled a little, it was a sad smile. He grabbed her face in his hands and pressed his lips on hers. Hermione closed her eyes instinctively, her body falling into familiar patterns. He broke off the kiss and looked at her. “It doesn’t matter what you believe, I know why I’m here” he answered. “And I won’t let you get yourself killed to save your boyfriend” he spat. She looked up at him, her eyes full of questions. “I know all about you and Ron, of course I know” she bit her lip. “I’m sorry” she didn’t even know why she was apologizing. “You don’t have to be sorry. I’m not good for you and if he makes you happy, then that is enough for me” Hermione could never have expected that he would tell her that. It made her feel sad. “I have to go to them” she whispered. He nodded. “I’m not letting you go alone” he answered and he grabbed her hand and pulled her with him.
Hermione didn’t let go of his and as Draco pulled her trough the battlefield. He was agile and swift. Lucky for them, the deatheaters didn’t seem to pay much attention to them, as they would surely raise their eyebrows when they saw them running hand in hand. They reached the stairs to the boathouse. “They’re down there” Hermione whispered. “He is down there to” Draco protested. “I’m not afraid” she answered and darted down the stairs. Draco let go of her hand. When she reached Harry and Ron, he was no longer with her. Harry and Ron were looking through the window of the boathouse and Hermione joined in. Just in time to see Nagini kill professor Snape. She had never liked the professor, but he didn’t deserve to die like that. She heard a loud crack as Voldemort disapparated. They opened the door and Harry rushed to Snape’s side. Hermione squatted next to him, pressing her fingers to the professors neck. He was crying and she knew it wouldn’t take long for him to go. “Please, take them” he moaned, gesturing to his tears. Harry looked at her and she grabbed a small vile from her purse and handed it to him. Harry caught the tears in the bottle. “Take them to the pensieve” Snape ordered them, Harry nodded. “Look at me” he whispered. Harry obeyed. “You have your mother’s eyes” he said softly. Hermione looked at the old professor’s face. In that moment she knew, she recognized the look on his face. He had loved Lily. Harry looked shocked.
