Hermione polished off her ham sandwich with surprising speed, given that a mere few months ago she'd been a vegetarian. Well, she mused, smiling, a lot of things had changed with her pregnancy. She no longer liked carrots, for one thing. For another, she'd gotten married to a man whose mother was trying to kill her even from beyond the grave. Lots of changes.
The smile faded from her face as she recalled the look on Severus' face as he had ran off--"To find Yenorra."
What was that? Why did he need to see her all of a sudden? Sure, she had been cruel, she admitted that, but it didn't seem like he was running to an old girlfriend for comfort. If anything, it seemed as if he had suddenly remembered something that made him truly afraid for the other woman.
What, she wondered suddenly, had they been doing upstairs while his mother was foretelling her death? And she was very interested to know why on earth Yenorra's clothes were barely coming along for the ride as the woman had run after her husband. Her husband!
Find your own, you witch, she thought darkly, he's mine. If you try to take him, I'll take you!
I could, too, she thought. She's skin and bones, and not a very attractive skin and bones, at that. I could break her easily. I wouldn't even needwandwand.
Then why, a nasty little voice asked her, are you so worried t wht what happened before? And why are you going crazy, thinking about why your husband needed to find her so badly, instead of bloody DOING SOMETHING?
Bugger off, she thought insistently back. I don't need to listen to you. He's my husband and I'll do what I bloody want to!
"Besides," she said aloud, "doing something would require getting up."
"Not necessarily," squeaked a voice from behind her, causing her to upset the tray on her lap. She tried her best to turn furiously about, but managed only to scoot slowly around to face Zeggy.
"What do you mean?" she snapped, trying to regain her composure. She would never have normally snapped, especially at a poor defenseless little house-elf who had no choice but to serve its masters however cruel they might be, but she had become so emotional over the past few months that she seemed to have no control whatsoever over her responses. That was probably why she had said those things to Severus, she realized.
Zeggy stepped nervously forward, and she felt a slight twinge of pity (which was overlaid very heavily by an overwhelming impatience). The elf said, "We could help you upstairs, miss, if that is what you is wanting! Zeggy used to do it for the mistress, when she was in your condition!"
Hermione seized the chance. "Great! Hme tme to where my husband is!"
Only after she was safely in the hallway directly outside her husband's room (she supposed Zeggy had wanted her to be able to make an entrance) did she realize that if Zeggy had served a pregnant Mrs. Snape, he must have seen her husband grow up. Finally, someone she could talk to who had known Severus as a child, and who hadn't been his mortal enemy!
But for the moment, she had more pressing concerns. Pushing the heavy door open (that must have been rubbish to open at three years old, she thought), she got her first glimpse of her husband's bedroom.
However, she wasn't given much time to soak in the furniture or decorations, as her eyes were immediately drawn to the woman cowering on the bed, crying, and the man looming over her, shouting.
"Tell me! What did she do to my wife? I know you know! Don't try and get out of it by crying, I know that one! What did she---Hermione!"
Severus turned, surprised, at the sound of the door closing. Yenorra even stopped sobbing for a moment to look up. Severus walked quickly over to Hermione and took her arm in his hand. "Hermione," he said in a voicvoice, "I think you had better wait in the hall. This woman," he spat the word out, "and I have some business to attend to." He shot a glare at the woman in question, who promptly resumed her sobbing.
Hermione looked from her husband to the other woman, and announced, "I think I'd rather stay, thanks very much." She disentangled herself from her husband's grasp, and settled herself in the only chair in the room, sighing as the weight was removed from her very sore feet.
Severus, though, wasn't giving in. He pressed on, "Hermione, this will only take a moment. I would prefer it if you didn't hear---"
"I have no doubt you would," Hermione interjected, "but I would really rather hear this, as it undoubtedly concerns me. What did who do to me, anyway?"
Severus was torn by wanting to protect her by sparing her knowledge, and wanting to protect her by giving her knowledge. It was a lost cause from the start. Denying Hermione knowledge was like denying a plant the sunshine. Quickly, he attempted to fill her in.
"I think Mother put a curse on you, so that you'll die in childbirth. This creature" he turned on Yenorra, "knows what she did, but she won't tell me!"
Hermione was puzzled. "She didnave ave time to put a curse on me. I think she might have been about to, but you walked in. But, Severus, I have a question." She gestured to Yenorra. "Who the bloody hell is she?"
Snape looked slightly confused at the abrupt change of subject. "Yenorra Lestrange," he told her, sounding as if she should have been paying better attention to the potion that she was supposed to be brewing.
She made an impatient gesture, pressing on with all the justifiable irrationality of a pregnant woman. "I mean," she said, feeling herself on the edge of completely unreasonable tears, "who is she to you? And why the hell was she running around after you without half her clothes on?"
Snape looked at her for a moment, and then started to laugh. As Hermione and Yenorra stared at him, the former in confusion and the latter in indignation, he laughed harder and harder. Finally, he regained enough composure to gasp out, "That's what's worrying you? Not the curse, not the flying knives, not the deathtrap house, not the death you just witnessed, but the idea of ME and YENORRA?!" Not heeding the dirty looks he was receiving from both women now, he laughed even harder than before, sinking onto his bed (a safe distance from Yenorra).
If Hermione had been in possession of her wand at that moment, only a fool would have laid odds against her hexing her husband. She was wondering how much effort it would take to get up and attempt to take his wand away from him, but decided it was too much.
Yenorra, who was looking more and more petulant by the minute, said as cuttingly as she could, "Well, Sevvie, you didn't use to think it was such a hilarious idea. Say, the first two years after graduation?"
That shut him up more quickly than Hermione imagined Petrificus Totalus would have. Severus shot Yenorra a glare that would have stripped varnish off a coffee table, as Hermione asked, "What are you talking about?"
Yenorra stood, exhibiting a change in moods that put pregnant women to shame, suddenly smiling sinisterly down at Hermione. "Didn't he tell you that? We were an item. We were even engaged! But I broke it off when he went to work for that Mudblood-lover Dumbledore. We all have to be open to change, though " she trailed off thoughtfully, eyeing the dark man giving her a much darker look. "Well, Sevvie, I thought you might have told her about us! It's very strange that you never even told her who was your first. It was me!" she cried, facing Hermione again. "I had him first, and you'll never be able to have that! Everything you've got is just what I've left behind! How can you even hope to compete with me?"
"Because now I have something you want desperately," Hermione said quietly. She rose with some difficulty from her chair, and took a place beside her husband, who also rose. She faced Yenorra, and said, with purest conviction of a beloved wife, "I have something you'll never have, and it doesn't even matter. It doesn't matter that you had him first, you hear me? Because I have him now, and I'll have him last." She turned and gave Severus a kiss, which he accepted gratefully. It wasn't that he minded being fought over per se, but he wasn't breeding stock, for heaven's sake!
He was very pleased, furthermore, when Hermione deepened the kiss, sliding her arms inside his robes. Giving Yenorra a jealous show, he thought, but he was wrong.
Triumphant, Hermione yanked her husband's wand out of his inside pockets, shoved Severus back onto the bed, and advanced on Yenorra. "Now," she said, very deliberately, "you will tell me everything you know."
