Clearing the mind
Thea's legs ached and her chest burned as she ran. Ice-cold air grated down her throat as she sucked in great lungfuls of the crisp, winter air. The bare skin of her arms felt numb with cold, though her inside felt deliciously warm as her body heat rose.
Her feet pounded against the grounds of Hogwarts. She was running so fast, fast enough to push tho thoughts from her mind. Everything hurt; her legs, her feet, her lungs, her heart. All she could think of was going the distance, pushing herself that little bit farther.
Looking up briefly she saw how clear and pale the sky looked, how fresh and clean. Returning her gaze straight ahead Thea increased her speed, turning towards the trees on her right.
She felt her wand pulse in her pocket, as she grew closer to the Forbidden Forest. She did not slow her pace, even though a brief wave of terror ran through her body and her lungs screamed at her to stop for air.
Taking the nearest opening, Thea found herself on a pathway. She didn't care what had created it, only that it allowed her to move deeper into the woods. When the trees grew thicker and the light began to darken, the path turned into undergrowth, effectively ending.
Thea carried on, crashing through the undergrowth, not caring what heard her, or that her clothes and skin were being scratched and torn by the invasive plants and theirs thorns.
She did not pause or stop until a large tree came into view. Its trunk was a deep brown, twisting upwards, and it's branches started low; perfect for climbing.
Without pausing in her step, Thea jumped up to grab the lowest branch, her feet coming up to grip the trunk, her arms pulling her weight up. She carried on in this fashion until the branches grew so close and dense that she could just step up onto each like climbing a ladder.
Finally she was in the thick of the tree; it's very heart. Safe in a green womb of leaves and branches. Finding a familiar crook Thea settled back against the trunk, her face turned into the breeze. Her eyes were open yet unseeing as her mind began to tick over once more as oxygen flooded to her starved brain.
Already Thea had realised that each time she tested the potion she had been charged to make, she would have to ensure that there was a staff member nearby who could help the victim in time. But this entailed careful planning, as Thea couldn't risk suspicions arising as to her loyalty.
Taking a deep breath, holding it and then releasing it with a whoosh, Thea set her mind to the plan.
The only staff members capable of helping the victims would be Snape, Madame Pomfrey and Dumbledore. Dumbledore would have no reason to be in class or in the halls during the working day, and if he just happened to be passing when an accident happened that would look far too suspicious. Thea ruled him out.
Madame Pomfrey was a possibility. Although no one in the last year took classes with her unless they were studying magical medicine, she was called to every accident. The question is, could she be there in time?
Thea doubted this, but maybe if she was in the area for another reason. . . .
Thea noted her down as a possibility, before turning her mind to Snape. He was the most obvious option. Not only would he know exactly how to respond to the poison, but as his role as a staff member he would have to, and even the Death Eaters could see that. Therefore his involvement would be rational and reasonable.
Thea could argue that she had performed the task in the presence of Snape, as she knew that he was a fighter of the cause, therefore if anything went wrong he would protect and assist her.
Yes. Thea smiled. Snape was definitely the best option. The trick was making it look as if she had not intended for the experiment to occur in the presence of any staff members. She could argue why she had kept Snape near by, but in an ideal situation she wanted that to look like an accident.
If she could just plot a scenario. . . . .
Sighing, Thea closed her eyes and turned her face to the sky. The winter air cut into her skin and a numbness seeped through her body. She sat like that until the sun was high in the sky and beating down on her pale, drawn face.
