Wisdom and Lemon Drops
Of all the people I would expect to show up in my office uninvited, after curfew on a school night, Ronald Weasley would not be one of them. And to have brought a petrified, Blaise Zabini wrapped in a familiar Invisibility Cloak on top of it all was almost enough to leave me speechless.
Arthur and Molly have raised a fine young man in Ronald. His loyalty to his friends is unwavering. Harry and Draco both may owe their very lives to this remarkable young man and they don't even know it.
He has asked me to keep silent about his involvement and I will do so. He will tell Harry himself when he is ready.
You are probably wondering why I would allow a suspected Death Eater to come back to Hogwarts. Or perhaps, you are wondering if I even knew. I’ll tell you.
I was aware of young Zabini's allegiance to Voldemort. Mister Malfoy's warnings did not go unheeded. I did however hope that he could yet be saved.
I still believe he can be.
You see, when you have been taking care of children for as long as I have, you learn to trust your instincts when it comes to their character. I will admit, that I have on occasion, made mistakes, but I am not mistaken this time.
Young Mister Zabini can still be saved from the path he has set himself on. I have only ever been this sure about one other wizard who went dark.
I was right then, I am right now.
I see much of Severus in this distraught young man. He is trying so very hard to live up to familial obligations, even though they are not the things he would have chosen if given the opportunity to choose for himself.
Years ago, I gave Severus a chance to turn his life around, to take back the freedom he had signed away when his father brought him before Lord Voldemort. Tonight, I have given that same chance to Blaise Zabini.
He has lost much in joining Voldemort, that is true, but he can still go on to lead a happy, productive life.
He doesn't quite see it that way yet, but he will. He just needs to allow himself time.
Time to learn to live with what he has done, who he has hurt, and everything he has lost.
It is no surprise to me that what he grieves for most is lost relationship with Harry.
That Harry prefers the company of his own gender is something I have always known about the boy. That he would seek out those who were not in awe of his name nor his status does not surprise me either. Harry does not like his fame, to him it is a burden he carries that he would gladly shed.
When Harry began seeing young Mister Zabini, I warned him to be cautious, to think with his head as well as his heart. I knew of the betrothal to Miss Parkinson, and I knew that there was every chance that Harry would be hurt in the end. However, it is the experiences of life that shape us into who we are meant to be. To deprive Harry of this experience, however painful it may have been in the end, would have been to rob him of part of what he is yet to become.
How can we experience joy if we never know what it is to be sad? Light and dark, good and evil, right and wrong, love and hate, life is a system of balance.
What Harry shares now with young Mister Malfoy is much more appreciated because of what he experienced with Mister Zabini.
I am not saying that Mister Zabini was no more than a stepping stone on Harry's path. On the contrary, he has been a major factor in what makes Harry Potter the man he is today. Mister Zabini has, if you will, set the bar that all of Harry's present and future lovers will be measured against.
That is if he has any future lovers.
Somehow, I don't see young Malfoy letting him go anytime soon.
Draco Malfoy. He is an enigma.
In all my years, I have never seen such arrogance in a boy so young. Even Lucius, in his early years at Hogwarts, was no where near as formidable as his son. I remember at Draco's sorting, the Hat had not even been placed on his head before it shouted out Slytherin. I knew then and there that he would be one to watch.
And I have watched him.
I have watched as he and Harry fought tooth and nail over everything from Quidditch to family, to House politics.
I have watched him push himself to the limits in his academic career, getting top marks over every other boy in school.
I have watched him, out on his broomstick in the wind and the rain, training his hardest in hopes of beating Harry to the snitch.
I have watched him, as he watched Harry.
Sometimes, Harry watched Draco as well.
Polar opposites, I never thought they would find any common ground. I never imagined they would become friends, let alone lovers.
But, if there is one thing I should have learned in all my years, it is never to underestimate the charm of a Potter male.
James Potter had it. Lily Evans hated the boy from the very moment they met, yet somehow, once he took it upon himself to win her heart, he did just that.
James' father had it as well. The love of his life was in fact engaged to another man when he won her heart and swept her off her feet. Quite literally, in fact. He lifted her into his arms and apparated away. The next time they were seen, weeks later, they were already married.
I have known that Draco was smitten with Harry since he was fifteen years old. But, they being who they are, and Draco's father being who he is, I just assumed that Draco would ignore his own wants and pursue the life that was prearranged for him, as so many others have done.
It broke my heart to think of such talent being wasted on the likes of Tom Riddle.
Again, I had underestimated the Potter charm.
Draco Malfoy, thanks to Harry, will not join Voldemort. He will not become a pawn to that madman's machinations. I cannot express how delighted I was to find this out.
Draco's future troubled me greatly but I was at a loss as to what to do to help him. Harry however found a way to do what I could not. He has saved Draco's soul.
Harry is a remarkable young wizard. From the very moment I laid eyes on him when he was but an infant, I knew he would do great things. I was not wrong.
It is fated that he will save the world, this much is true. That he would go about doing so one wizard at a time however, is something of a shock, I must admit.
His parents would be very proud of the man he has become. I know that I am.
I couldn't be more proud of him if he were my own flesh and blood.
Which is why I will let him enjoy these last few weeks before the war begins in earnest. I fear he will have little joy for quite some time following Voldemort's death.
I do not, for a single moment, doubt that Harry will be victorious.
I am, however, afraid of what victory may cost him.
But enough of my rambling.
