Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Warning: The end of the chapter contains a little spoiler from the half-blood prince, although I'm sure that by now everyone already knows what happened there.
The last paragraph's dedicated to Lukas who inspired me on many things for and around this fanfiction, and who will - hopefully - still like this story and release Hermione out of his cupboard one day. Thx so much. :)
And no, the poem's not stolen from some unknown poet - it's completely mine (and a bit pathetic, I know, but it was fitting for the situation). ;)

Chapter 16
Our hopes in our hands,
our hearts on the cold floor
"Molly? You asked me to…"
"Oh dearie, I’m so glad you’ve come here. How are you?"
"Quite well. Listen, Molly, I…"
"Hermione and Draco are already out in the garden. Did you hear about their wedding rumors?"
"No, but could you please…"
Hang on, they were planning to get married? Well, we would have maybe found out someday – after all, Lucius was still Draco’s father. Judging by Molly’s almost annoying cheerfulness, it was impossible to talk to her for a minute while being listened to as well. Finally, she seemed to at least notice that something was bothering me.
"Honey, are you alright? You look so… nervous."
"Do you remember what you said in the invitation, Molly?"
A knowing smile appeared on her face.
"You mean the boyfriend thing, do you? Well, did you bring him? Where’s the lucky guy?"
"Molly, please don’t be mad or anything…", I tried to prepare her for the moment that got more and more inevitable.
"How could I be, sweetie? Arthur!", Mr. Weasley showed up in the kitchen next to his wife and looked expectantly, "Remember this day, Arthur, because it will be the one when we met Vivienne’s boyfriend for the first time. Oh, I’m so excited!"
As for myself… well, I would have rather wanted to donate all my organs instead of standing next to Molly Weasley, her arm around my shoulder in a motherly gesture, without the slightest clue that all her bright expectations would be gone in a matter of seconds. Arthur gave me a reassuring smile and I sighed in defeat.
"Alright… Molly, Arthur, here he is."
At those words, Lucius entered the house as the incarnation of arrogance himself. I could have slapped him for being such an aristocratic asshole in a situation like this. A loud crash from Molly’s direction snapped me out of my anger, but as usual, it was Arthur who saved the situation. Or at least what was left to save of it at that point.
"Lucius", he offered his hand after an awkward moment of hesitation while Molly stood there, surrounded by pieces of the glass she had just dropped, staring at Lucius as if he were the personified Day of Judgment.
"Arthur, Molly", Lucius nodded at them, finally shaking Mr. Weasley’s hand.
"You are… oh my goodness", Molly brought out after a while and fell down on a chair behind her.
"I am, yes."
Somehow it had the appearance that Lucius found everything quite amusing. His smirk died, however, as Harry stormed into the kitchen, followed by Ron and the rest of the Weasley siblings. He must have seen Lucius in front of the house before since the expression on his face turned from uncertain disbelief into disappointed calmness.
"So it’s true", Harry suddenly stated in contempt, "and I hoped it was just a rumor you’re here."
"You didn’t invite him, mother, did you? He must have sneaked in somehow", the weak suggestion that came from Ron wasn’t actually much help to any of us.
"Harry, dear, I know you might not be comfortable with this", Molly started with a forced smile, "but I can assure you I’m as surprised as you all are."
"Then why’s he here?", the twins demanded to know, obviously already considering to make Lucius a new future customer of their fun inventions and other craziness.
"You remember what I said about Vivienne, children? I told her to bring her boyfriend along, and… well… here he is."
"You’re mad, Mom!"
"How dare you, Vivienne?"
"Did you already hear about out latest invention, the twister hat, Mr. Malfoy? Cheap offer at the moment… buy four, take five…"
Finally Arthur Weasley stepped forward to end the upcoming roar between his children and Harry by clapping twice.
"I don’t want that kind of argument in my house. Vivienne is our guest, and since Molly requested to get to know her boyfriend, Lucius will be our guest as well. I expect all of you to treat him well. George, Fred, no selling tonight! I don’t want our guests blown up in pieces. Ron, don’t talk to your mother like that! Now, go outside and have fun."
I knew that very moment that the Weasleys would learn to accept the fact of Lucius and me being together somehow, but judging by the look on Harry’s face who had stayed in the kitchen, there was no doubt that I had just lost a friendship.
"I already thought it couldn’t get any worse after that with Hermione and Draco. But now… do you know who he is, Vivienne? He’s a Death Eater. He’s notorious for changing his mistresses like others change their socks…"
"Speaking of socks, Mr. Potter", the gentle tone of Lucius’ voice surprised me, "Did you free any house elves lately? Or have you already run out of socks?"
He shouldn’t have mentioned the occasion with Dobby because Harry only snorted in disgust at his words.
"To further enlighten you, Mr. Potter… I haven’t been a Death Eater for quite some time. And I have to remind you that most secrets of Voldemort would have never made it into the Ministry of Magic without my help."
"You still are a Malfoy."
"I’m proud to be one."
"I suppose you’re proud about your latest conquest, then. She is the youngest of your mistresses so far, if the rumors are true…"
In a matter of seconds, the snake head of Lucius’ cane came up to press against Harry’s throat, carefully, but with a firm message.
"You are talking about my girlfriend, Mr. Potter, not one of my former mistresses. Therefore, I expect you to treat her with the same respect you show when you talk to your friends. I don’t ask for your permission to love the woman who loves me back the same way. Unfortunately, your parents never quite got the chance to teach you some manners… and I would hate to believe you need to learn some from me. Is that clear?"
Instead of waiting for Harry’s reply (and the boy was so speechless that it was highly improbable he’d be able to bring out anything except a breath), he lowered his cane again and grabbed the side of my neck to press a fierce kiss against my lips. Looking utterly defeated, Harry went outside with an angry scowl on his face.
"Well", Molly released a happy smile, "could have been worse, eh?"
"We could have dropped dead, yes", I replied, releasing a breath of relief, and Lucius laughed softly, pulling me against his side, planting a gentle kiss on my temple.
"What a lovely couple", we heard Molly Weasley whisper to her husband. And maybe we really were.
As soon as Lucius went off to talk to his son for a moment, Snape appeared next to me, a serious, almost solemn expression on his face. His right hand dove into his clothes to reappear with a small red bottle. Somehow the look of the liquid inside it made me feel uncomfortable and I didn’t even want to guess which kind of potion this probably was.
"Take this. I fear Lucius does still have many enemies out there, and I don’t want you to have no way out should the worst happen", he mumbled while pushing the bottle into my hand. For a moment I felt too surprised and scared to reply with anything meaningful. But Snape simply forced a smile upon his lips at my silence.
"I know", he said, his voice dark and unhappy, "Today it might seem far away… when the day comes, however, you’ll never remember…"
"… how the years in between went by so fast, yes", I finished for him although I didn’t want to interrupt him, "I wished I could thank you for it, Professor, but I’m afraid it’d be a lie if I actually did."
The typical Snape smirk returned to his face.
"Maybe you will thank me one day in the future, Ms. Crossdale. I would like to hope that day to never occur, though", he nodded his head, "My kindest regards to Lucius. That is if you find him between all those other imbeciles, of course."
Lucius would never find out about this or the small bottle, we both thought in unison at that moment, no words necessary to confirm it. With a searching look on his face, Snape hinted a formal bow.
"If you’ll excuse me now… I better keep an eye on our headmaster and the amount of alcohol around him. I’ll see you around."
When he was gone, I stuffed the small bottle into my bag that innocently hung next to the kitchen. As much as I thanked Snape for his thoughtfulness deep down inside, I was sure to never use it, let alone ever look at it a second time. Somehow it slipped from my mind and fell into complete oblivion the moment I stepped back into the garden. Only years later, I would find it again for the last time and actually be relieved by the mere sight of it.
On my way out into the garden, someone grabbed me and pulled me into a dark corner next to some window of the house. I was more than just angry when I noticed that it was Draco who had a rather firm grip on my arm that was starting to hurt.
"It’s you, isn’t it?", he asked in nervous excitement.
"I have no idea what you’re talking about, but I’d highly appreciate it if you let go of me."
"Oh, I’m sorry", he murmured while releasing my arm. The excitement in his eyes and the astonishment that clearly lay beneath it didn’t disappear, though.
"Draco, would you care to explain what you mean?"
"Do you think I’m a complete idiot?"
"At the moment… let me think: yes!"
"Voldemort being defeated, only rumors existing about his end", Draco gave a sarcastic laugh, "Harry can’t remember anything, Sirius doesn’t want to talk, you’ve been somehow involved in this, and now… look at you. You may be able to fool others, but I know you better than the rest of them."
"I still don’t…"
Draco leaned forward and dropped his voice until it was nothing but a hoarse, yet meaningful whisper, like a copy of his father’s.
"You have been that last Sephor, Vivienne."
There was an awkward moment of terror on my behalf, still I managed to keep my body under control.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about, Draco", I replied in a sharp tone, causing him to recoil from me with a frown, "but I’ve never been such a thing. And now, if you don’t mind, I would like to not be bothered with your silly ideas anymore."
He would never hear the truth from me, not if I lived a thousand years to be reminded of my past again and again. No one would. Some wounds are too deep to ever share them, no matter how much Lucius believed he was helping me by knowing all of them.
Back inside where I thought I could be alone with my thoughts, two strong arms found their way around me, pulling me backwards to a warm body, and a powerful voice dropped to a whisper as it spoke into my ear.
In the shadows we wait,
our hopes in our hands, our hearts on the cold floor.
The ceiling is bright with stars, yet sinister with despair.
If this is the end, where will we wake up tomorrow?
If this is the beginning, where will we turn after the dawn?
Let us pretend we’ve never lived, my love… let us pretend
we are nothing but silent pictures on the wall.
Let us pretend there’s only us, no world, no pain,
no endless thoughts of what could have been.
We will be invisible to all of them.
And even death won’t be able to find us in the end.
"Don’t say such things, Lucius", I frowned at his words, pushing him away, but he simply laughed.
"Why not? It’s not from me… some pathetic wizard poet wrote it during my school time. He’s supposed to be working in the muggle world by now."
"Then why did you say it?"
"I thought you might like it."
"Really? Since when do I like depressive poems like that one?"
With an angry sigh I turned away from him to go out into the garden, but his voice was faster.
"Since when do you think I don’t notice your lies?"
"What? I’ve never…"
"Oh yes, you did. You even do right now."
Lucius didn’t seem to be amused or satisfied in the least as he crossed the distance between us in two quick steps. Assuring himself that no one was watching us, he pushed me backwards into the darkness of one of the rooms, closing the door behind us, but illuminating us with a weak magical light. He seemed furious, his eyes burning with suppressed rage, his facial expression tensed and arrogant.
"Listen, Vivienne", the silvery snake head of his cane came up to lift my chin and I winced as the cold metal pressed against my skin, "I may not be used to women lying to me, but I know for sure that I shouldn’t be used to experiencing it with you. Did you truly think I wouldn’t notice? To fake a climax in bed… I would laugh if it hadn’t been you."
"Lucius, it was just this once and not because you…"
"We are not discussing my sexual skills now for we both know them quite well, Vivienne. Do not mistake this for a scratch in my male pride. But you may have noticed that lying has become a habit of yours since that evening."
"Even if… you are not listening anyway."
"Says who?"
"I do, Lucius. There’s so much I’d like to tell you, but I’m never sure if you want to hear, let alone listen to it anyway."
"Then talk to me, for fuck’s sake!", his voice raised in desperate rage.
"Alright!", I almost screamed back at him, reminding myself in the last second that there were people outside, "I was bothered before because Draco pretended he’d known that I was the last Sephor. Apparently, Snape did an extra lesson in Defense against the Dark Arts on the topic of magical creatures."
"Did you tell him?"
"Tell Draco what? The truth? No, Lucius. And I don’t want to you catch you doing so, either. It’s my past and no one will ever find out. There are already enough people who know it."
"Don’t you ever feel like desperately wanting to tell someone?"
"Like you feel when it comes to your own past?"
I had hit quite a nerve with that as Lucius brought his cane on the floor with an audible thud.
"My past has nothing to do with this!", he hissed at me.
"So much for lying, then… seems like I learned only from the best", I mocked, but paid the next second since Lucius was at the edge of keeping back his rage by now.
"One simple word, Vivienne, and we can end this. All you need to do is say it."
"I know."
Utterly surprised he raised an eyebrow at my reply.
"And?"
"I can’t… even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t be able to."
He released a deep sigh, but didn’t say anything.
"Lucius?"
"Yes?"
"We don’t have much time left, right?"
"No one can know that."
"But you do."
Finally, he tore his gaze away from the walls of the room and looked at me. His eyes were full of the kind of pain that came with a certainness most people never get during their lifetime.
"Yes. It’s not just a feeling… this time it’s definite. And there won’t be any different paths leading away from it. That’s why I need to know, Vivienne. My shining presence in this world is over and one day soon you will have nothing but a shadow of it. We may not be able to fight destiny, but we are free to choose which way we approach it. When the day has come, you will have to decide if you see the shadow of what has been once or the one of what could have been, then."
Time to think it over wasn’t necessary anymore.
"I’ll see the shadow of what has been once, Lucius. There will be much that could have been, I’m sure, but it’s not important. We are given some more time with each other… maybe that’s the only thing that should count."
"Maybe", he added cryptically, only this time the smile was real.
We were interrupted by the crowd’s voices that performed the countdown for the new year outside in the garden. Lucius flashed me a burning gaze while the fireworks went off, illuminating the dark room we were in with colorful lightning.
"There’s only one way to properly celebrate the new year", he mentioned casually, stepping towards me and starting to undo my top.
"And that would be, Mr. Malfoy?"
"Kiss me", his voice drowned in growing desire.
My lips met his as our hands found each other’s body to caress what they had been knowing for a long time by now, yet every exploration seemed like a completely new path.
"We can’t, Lucius", I brought out when his mouth released me for a second, "What if someone finds us?"
I had never seen him casting both the silence and locking spell so fast before returning to his task.
"There’s nothing wrong about two beautiful people being in love", he mumbled against my skin.
"There is when they use their hosts’ rooms to make out, though."
Lucius pressed me against the nearest wall, lifting my skirt and smirking as he noticed the lack of underwear beneath it.
"You didn’t just expect this, did you?"
I pulled a face at his amused expression.
"Wearing no underwear doesn’t mean I wanted to have sex with you here. Maybe I just forgot to put some on."
"Of course. Please feel free to stop me from ravishing you since you never intended to have sex during the party", he replied in fake politeness.
"Don’t stop, Lucius", I ground my hips against his, forcing a moan from both of us. While one hand lifted my legs around his waist, he used the other to open his pants. Judging from the state of arousal, Lucius must have been in serious pain, but in an admirable moment of self-control, he simply leaned forward to suckle on the flesh of my collarbone.
"Don’t tease", my protest died on my lips as he retreated and suddenly was inside me, pushing me so harshly against the wall that I felt the skin on my back scraping. It was better to not wince at it, though, because I knew that this was his very own way to remind me that I had been lying to him earlier. Lucius had a creepy imagination of justice, yet at times I hated to admit that he was right.
"I really love you", I managed to say between desperately meeting his thrusts, and he smiled, plunging my mouth with his to let his tongue mimic the movements of his hips.
"Don’t talk", he whispered against my lips before a hot wave of release washed through me, so I had to grab his shoulders and back for support. Lucius moaned at the feeling of our bodies being pressed closely against each other, but soon afterwards he gave in to his own climax. Our foreheads touched in a loving gesture, the only noise in the room around us was our quick breaths and his soft chuckle when he realized that I found myself unable to use my legs. Instead of a comment about it, he pulled me against his chest, stroking my scraped back, my hair, whispering confirmations of his emotions for me in my ear until I almost fell asleep in his arms.
Snape’s voice from the other side of the door calling Harry an idiot since he had spilt his champagne caused both of us to jump. Even with the silence and the locking spell still being cast on the door, it was wiser to reappear on the party before someone like Snape (or worse, Dumbledore, who had been slightly inebriated already before midnight) got the fantastic idea to actually search for us. Without changing a single word, Lucius and I dressed again and put a cleaning charm on our bodies before we headed for the door. Only then, he turned around to face me.
"I really love you as well, Vivienne", he quietly said, but released a small laugh as I threw my arms around him to hug him tightly, "Let’s go home and forget that we’ve ever been here. We are done with it."
Done with the world, he meant, but he didn’t speak it out loud for we both knew it was the only truth. We were done with what anyone had expected us to do. From now on, however, we would turn our back on the world that had never let us be a true part of it. And so, I even managed a relieved smile.
"You mean let’s go home for another round of breathtaking sex."
"I thought that was obvious anyway…", he arrogantly grinned at me.
As we left around two in the morning, Dumbledore and Snape were still standing in front of the table that served never ending drinks by magic. And in all honesty, it looked as if those two weren’t likely to leave soon, let alone if the headmaster of Hogwarts even still knew who he was. Judging by the funny sounds he released now and then (mainly lines from old drinking songs), however, he couldn’t care less about anything but alcohol anyway.
"So, Severus", Dumbledore carefully picked a glass of champagne after assuring himself that it was the fullest one on the table, "Any plans for the next year?"
"Besides not being counted among those teachers of Defense against the Dark Arts who died or left after their first year teaching there’s nothing coming to my mind."
"No adventures?"
Snape showed an amused smile.
"Well, actually, no."
After taking a sip from his champagne, Dumbledore leaned forward and lowered his voice.
"We could pretend that I was killed by you, and the year after next I will show up again and we will be over the moon that we fooled them once more. What do you say, Severus?"
"I say you better not get a second glass of champagne, headmaster."
