CH 17 Down to the supermarket
“Hermione Granger, the school know-it-all. She, Potter and the youngest male Weasley are close friends. The youngest Weasley, Ginny, she is nearer your age, only a year older, you will probably get on well with her.”
“She might not like me.”
“You will not know unless you try.”
“I suppose. I don’t usually bother making friends; I never stay in one place long enough. Are Harry and Her …mione foster kids?”
“No, more like honorary adoptees. However Granger does have her own family. Muggle parents.”
“So she’s a muggle born, is that right?”
“It is.”
“What’s Harry then?”
“His parents were witch and wizard, his mother was muggle born.”
“What am I again? What are you?”
“You are pureblood, I am half blood.”
“Does it actualy make any difference?”
“To some no, to others yes.”
“That’s prejudice, I don’t like it. I take as I find.”
“That is the best way to be. Do not let others influence you from that Lou.”
“I won’t, I’ve put up with enough of it myself to know what it feels like. You know those blokes that tried to do you in?”
“Do me in?”
“Yeah, the ones at Spinners End.”
“What about them?”
“Do they work for Voldemort?”
“They are followers of his, yes. They are known as Deatheaters.”
“Eww. Creepy bunch of idiots, I’m glad you’re not one. Those masks they wore were hideous.”
Severus said nothing, unwilling to reveal his past or present role with the Dark Lord yet.
“Can I make tea? What do you fancy?”
“Can you cook? Other than fry ups that is.”
“Of course I can cook. I wouldn’t have survived otherwise. I’ll look in the pantry, see what we’ve got.” Lou disappeared into the pantry.
Severus thought about what they discussed at Hogwarts earlier. About her time in care. He was curious about the things she’d hidden from him.
“There’s not much in here, we need to shop tomorrow.” She told him as she came out carrying a large potato, a carrot and onion, half a turnip and a small lump of beef. It was somewhat dry but hadn’t turned yet. “Looks like stew and dumplings then. There’s some flour and suet in there, a few dried pulses. We won’t starve.”
“I am not eating leftover meat and vegetables.” He told her haughtily.
“Please yourself, I’m making some for me.”
Half an hour later his stomach rumbled noisily at the aroma coming from the pot on the stove. He couldn’t deny it smelled delicious. The dumplings she was adding smelled nice too, even though she hadn’t cooked them yet.
“What you gonna have then?”
“Since I am unable to go out and leave you on your own, I shall force myself to partake of whatever you are having.” He said in the same haughty manner, unwilling to admit he wanted some of the stew.
Lou grinned while her back was turned. They were taught to cook at an early age where she came from; Lou could make a meal from next to nothing. It was one of only two things she’d ever been praised on both at school and in care or foster homes.
An hour later, he was forced to admit that her cooking was indeed, very good. He soaked up the leftover gravy with some rather dry bread she found in the bread bin and felt content when he finished.
“That was delicious, where did you learn to cook?”
“We had to learn at the care homes, the rest I just picked up over time. I had to get by on what I had most of the time. Mrs Smythe, she taught me a lot too. She did a lot of fancy cooking when they had dinner parties. She used to let me help make things. She always gave me some before I went to bed, so I didn‘t miss out while they had their parties.”
“How are you with eggs? I love soufflé, but it is impossible for the elf’s to make a decent one. I do not suppose …”
“Yeah.” She laughed. I can do soufflés. Cheese one‘s, bread one‘s, fruit or chocolate. Omelettes too, I can do them.”
“Then from now on, the kitchen is your domain, I bow to your superior skills when it comes to cooking.”
“I should tell you to get lost.”
He raised an eyebrow at her.
“But I wont. You’ve looked after me enough, least I can do is the cooking, anyway, I enjoy it. “I’ll do a soufflé tomorrow night when we’ve shopped.” She couldn’t remember when her last period had been, and she was more than relieved it hadn’t happened when he was seeing to her leg, but she had nothing at the moment. No tampons, no towels, and she had no intention of being caught unawares if she could help it.
“The elf will do the shopping.”
“Aw, but I need to go. Go on, there’s got to be a supermarket round here somewhere. I’ve still got my money, we can use that.”
“I shall think about it, now what is for pudding?”
She gave him a huff and plonked and apple on the table in front of him. No shopping, no pudding.” She said, her arms folded defiantly.
“Is that so?” He gave her a fierce glare and she buckled immediately.
He wasn’t angry, but he did want a pudding and he was not going to be blackmailed by her, or fobbed off with an apple. The glare was only to see her reaction and he smiled inwardly when she gave in.
Lou snatched the apple back, made a batter mix and served up apple fritters.
“Mmm, these are better then the stew.” He told her round a mouthful. “I shall never survive Hogwarts food after this.” He knew she would make someone a fine wife some day. The thought rankled him and he put it aside. “Molly definitely has competition, and I never thought I would ever say that. Though if you tell her I said so, I shall deny it.”
Lou pinked up at the complement. She liked that she’d done something good for him. “Fancy a game of chess, when you’ve washed up.” She laughed as she ran from the kitchen. “It’s only fair, I did all the cooking.” She called back over her shoulder. Lou made sure to hold her robes up this time, so she didn’t trip up the steps.
He scowled for a moment, then waved his wand, setting the dishes to wash themselves. “Huh. Witches work.” He grumbled, heading for the drawing room.
Lou sat waiting in front of the chessboard. “That was quick, didn’t you do the dishes?”
“They are cleaning as we speak.”
“That’s cheating.”
“No, that is magic, I shall take black.” He told her, turning the board around so the black pieces were in front of him.
“Why do you always get black?“
“Because I like black. Your move.”
For the next two hours they played. Severus won the first game easily, then Lou beat him and he decided he’d had enough for one night.
He studied her as she packed the chess pieces away, then he went to the kitchen, returning moments later with a hot chocolate for Lou and a coffee for himself. “Lou.”
“What?”
“I would like to perform Legillimen’s on you again.”
“What’s that?”
“I used it after you resisted the veritaserum.”
“No. It made me feel ill and I don‘t like it. What’s it for?”
“It will enable me to see certain things in your mind, specific things. If you open your mind to me willingly, there will be no ill effects.” He told her.
“What do you want to do that for?” She sipped her chocolate.
“Because I believe you hid certain things from me, when you told me about your childhood.”
“If I did, it’s because they’re private. Your not looking in my head.”
“Why not? What do you hide that is so terrible?”
“I don’t, I …I just don’t want you to look.”
“When you saw Mr …Smythe was it?”
She nodded.
“When he abused his wife and you saw him, I asked you if he did indeed hurt you, as threatened. You did not reply.”
“Because it’s in the past, I don’t live with them any more and I just want to forget it all. I’m not talking about it any more. I’m going to bed, I‘ll see you in the morning.” She told him and left the room.
‘That went well Severus.’ He thought. Nevertheless, he intended to find out sooner or later.
The following morning he informed her they would both be moving to different bedrooms.
“Why?”
“You shall be using the master bedroom, I shall take the one next door. The Weasley’s arrive tomorrow, at present you are in the girls’ room and I, unfortunately, have Percival’s room. The elf should have them prepared by now, your things will be moved within the next hour. Breakfast?”
“Yeah, who’s cooking?”
“You are. You said you make a good omelette.”
“I know, but you’re washing up after.”
“Done. Hurry up, I am famished.”
Lou made the promised omelettes, adding onion, tomato and anything else she found hiding in the pantry. They were both full by the time they finished.
“Are you ready to see your bedroom?”
“Okay, where is it?”
“On the third floor, away from the noise of everyone.”
“This place should have a lift installed, how many floors are there?”
“Seven I believe, including the attic rooms and the cellar.”
“Seven, it definitely needs a lift. How many bedrooms has it got?”
“I have no idea. Rooms tend to appear at random.”
‘Crazy.’ She thought as they reached the second floor. “I don’t want to have to come up here more than once a day, it goes on forever.”
“You will get used to it. Depending on which house you are sorted into, you may have many more stairs to climb at Hogwarts.”
“Have any of the houses not got stairs?”
“Only my own, Slytherin.”
“I hope I get in that one then.”
“Stairs are not a reason to be chosen for a particular house, besides, you do not choose, the sorting hat does that.” He really hoped she was not sorted for Slytherin. Her peers could make life very difficult for her. Many were the children of Deatheaters and he did not want her mingling with them.
“The what?” She laughed as they finally reached the third floor.
“The sorting hat. You will see when the time comes. This is your room I believe.” He opened a large door and Lou stepped in.
“Crikey, couldn’t you have found a bigger one?”
The room they entered was a large sitting room, off that was a spacious bedroom, bathroom and large walk in closet. In addition, a separate dressing room and cupboards bigger than some bedrooms she’d used in the past.
“It’s too big Severus, I’ll rattle in here. It’s not a room, it’s a hotel suite. What’s yours like?”
Moving down the corridor, he opened another door. These rooms were similar to hers, but much smaller.
“Yours are better, cosier.”
“Once again, you will get used to them. Do you have your wand on you?”
“Yep. You said to carry it all the time.”
“Good, there is a room on the fifth floor that is ideal for you to begin to learn how to cast spells. In other words, a schoolroom.”
“What?” She wailed. “More stairs, and lessons too?”
“Correct. We shall begin today. I purposely did not reset your collar last night so you would have time to adjust to the flow of magic assigned to you. Have you felt anything as yet?”
“I don’t think so, but I woke up on the ceiling this morning, when I realised where I was I fell off, what am I supposed to feel?”
“Nothing, that means you have adjusted. Did you really wake up on the ceiling? Fifth floor now, we shall begin with a few simple charms.”
“Yeah I did and do we have to?”
“Unless you would prefer to be completely behind your peers when you begin school. Also, if you work now, we may go shopping this afternoon.”
“You just said the magic word.”
“I have not recited any incantations as yet.” He remarked, puzzled.
“Yeah you did, you said shopping.”
Severus hid a smile as they entered the old schoolroom. “Sit down at one of the desks and have your wand at the ready.”
For three hours, he schooled her in the theory of magic, taught her a few simple charms and taught her the basics of potion making. He was pleased, but not surprised at her ability when it came to potions. Her skills in the kitchen certainly helped her when it came to preparing ingredients, she chopped and sliced with the skill and speed of an experienced chef and Severus was more than impressed.
“You have done well, considering you have never attempted anything like this before. Lunch I think, then we can find a shop. Moon was rather disappointed at not being able to do so herself. If we purchase what we require for this evening, she can see to the rest.”
“They let elves in supermarkets?”
“I do not believe so, no. Elf’s have their own sources, a wizard never asks about such things. It will be my first time also in a supermarket.”
“Really? I thought you were half muggle or something.”
“I am, but since my father died whilst I was a young boy and my mother was a witch, we had elves to do our shopping for us. Lou.”
“Yeah?”
“The fact that I am half blood, it does not mean that I know fully, the ways of muggles. Also, I would prefer that you not mention my blood status to anyone. Not many know of it and it could cause problems for me in certain circles.”
“That’s fine, but I can’t talk about anything you tell me anyway. You made me take an oath remember. I assume it covers everything here.”
“Not everything no, I am asking as a fre …acquaintance.”
“I wont say a word. What do you reckon for lunch?”
“I believe Moon has already provided for us.”
In the kitchen, Moon had made a pan of soup with fresh crusty bread.
“This is lovely Moon, thanks.”
“Yous welcome miss. You want Moon should make dinner this evening? I can gets the shopping too if you wants.”
“No it’s alright Moon. I want to make something special and I enjoy cooking, so don’t get offended when I do. It’s not because I don’t like what you make. I haven’t been shopping for ages either. I’m looking forward to it, besides, you worked really hard doing those rooms, you deserve a break.”
“Elf’s doesn’t want breaks miss, elves like working.” She said before disappearing.
Lou didn’t notice, she was too busy checking her money was in her robe pocket. “Err Severus. I’m gonna look a bit odd going to the supermarket like this, everyone will look at me. I don’t suppose …?”
“Definitely not. Your muggle attire was in a terrible state and was burned. Once you have access to your accounts, you may purchase muggle attire for weekends and holidays. Until then, you are confined to robes. I only have Galleons, if I were to go to Diagon Alley, I can exchange some for muggle money should you so desire.”
“No it’s alright, too much messing about. They’ll just have to stare.”
He removed the restraining cuff and put on the proximity chain.
“I thought you trusted me. I thought I didn’t have to wear that any more.”
“I trusted you at Hogwarts Lou, I still do, but only up to a point. It will take time before I can trust you fully.”
“I feel like a little kid on reins. It’s humiliating.”
“Too bad, keep your wand tucked away, you are not allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts or number 12.”
He received a nod and left it at that. He knew she was sulking over the chain, but it was staying on regardless.
It didn’t take them long to find a local supermarket. When they entered, Severus was appalled by the place. Everything appeared to be wrapped in plastic, cardboard or tins.
Lou led them straight to the fresh fruit and vegetable section. He watched her feel at several items before making her selection and putting them into a horrible metal trolley that squeaked and would not go where it was meant to go. The place was too bright and too noisy. Children were running up and down the aisles and he hated it.
“Hurry up. I do not like it in here.” He told her.
“I’m going as quick as I can. It’s not easy when I keep getting jolted back and forth every time you move away from me.” She hissed. “And everyone keeps looking at us.” She’d managed to slip a box of tampons into the trolley while he was pre-occupied with scowling at a screaming infant sat in another trolley.
Severus looked around and glared. Faces were quickly averted and he grabbed the front of the trolley, trying to hurry her up.
“You’ve made me miss the eggs Severus. I can’t make a soufflé without eggs.”
Eventually he slowed his pace. He was fed up of having to go back to find things they’d overlooked. At last, they came to the checkout and he was fascinated at the way items were put onto the counter and moved by themselves without the use of a wand.
The woman behind the counter took them one at a time, passed them over something that bleeped, before she put them on another moving contraption to be packed. Some customers paid with what looked like a small square of plastic.
“Do you have one of those?” He asked Lou.
“A credit card? You’ve got to be kidding. I’m not old enough, besides, you have to pay the money back at the end of the month. I’d rather do without.”
He also noticed that folk were paying an incredibly large amount of money for their groceries. Lou already told him she only had £30. What if they didn’t have enough? Ten minutes later, he was cursing the proximity chain. Lou had several slightly damaged items in the trolley and was asking if she could have them cheaper as a result. He tried to walk away, pretend he wasn’t with her, but this had the effect of dragging her after him and earning them both strange looks. He had to return to the checkout with her. The fact that she paid next to nothing for their groceries was lost on him, embarrassment overruling everything else.
As soon as they were outside, he pulled her aside. “What on earth did you think you were doing?” He growled.
“What? Shopping.”
“I mean when it was time to pay. I have never been so embarrassed in my life as when you asked them to reduce those items.”
“But they would’ve reduced them anyway. I don’t understand.”
“Never have I resorted to the level of asking someone to give me something on the cheap. “ He told her angrily.
“Well aren’t you the lucky one.” She answered, hurt by his words. “Not all of us have had that luxury. It’s how I’ve survived on my own, scrimping and saving, asking for handouts. We can’t all be rich.”
She turned away, determined he wouldn’t see her tears.
Severus grabbed the bags from her, made sure no one was watching as he reduced them and put them in his pocket, then he Apparated them back to Grimauld Place, marching her back to the house as fast as possible.
He was angry at being made a show of, at least that was how he felt about the situation.
It was only when he removed the chain, replaced it with the cuff and stood up, that he noticed she was quietly crying. “Now what?” He demanded
Lou just turned away and headed for the kitchen.
