"Is that really something that could happen?" Kellyn interjected, concern evident on her face. "Could the wolf that scarred Bill come after us?"
Orra shrugged as she lay her mother's book gently on her kitchen table. "I won't know until I do some research."
"Highly unlikely," Snape stated calmly. "From what I have studied of werewolves, they do not have a bond with each other unless they are life-mated."
"Well, that's good news!" Aideen brightened up immediately. Her face fell in the next instant with the next doubt that crossed her mind. “Bill doesn’t have a life-mate bond thing with this werewolf, does he?”
“No.” Snape added. He fixed his gaze on the tiny sprite, gifting her with his patented Potions Master glare, “His life-mate bond is with a half-Veela.”
“Damn, Severus,” Orra griped, shaking her head. “Do I even want to know what a Veela or half-Veela is?”
“Indeed. I imagine that his bond with his mate would affect any kind of ritual magic you would attempt. I have some books somewhere. I will have to unpack to find them.”
“Wonderful. Just wonderful.” Orra settled at her table and rest her head in her hands. For a few moments, everyone just held their tongues and watched her, waiting for her to make the next move. She lifted her head to stare out of her window. “You might want to use my lovely basement for your books. There is plenty of space.”
Snape arched an eyebrow at the back of her head. He folded his arms across his chest as if protecting himself for a few long moments. Orra simply opened her book and began reading on the very first page. Instantly, she was lost in the words, her friends and houseguest completely forgotten.
“We can help ya, Severus!” Aideen offered happily. She stared down Kellyn.
“Sure,” Kellyn groused. “It will be fun.” She rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Just tell us the title of the book we’re looking for!” Aideen called over her shoulder as she started down the basement stairs.
Kellyn caught Snape’s eye and motioned with her head to the basement stairs then pointedly turned her gaze to Orra. Snape caught her meaning instantly and nodded to her just as she too descended beneath the rectory cottage.
“Orra,” Snape called her name gently.
She tore her eyes away from the book to peer at him curiously. “Yes?”
“Is it truly acceptable to you that I take over your basement?”
She giggled, at him, her eyes lighting up in merriment Snape simply did not understand.
“Oy, Severus. That basement is huge. Take as much of it as you need!”
He cracked a smile. A true, genuine smile for the first time in ages. Fate had definitely gifted him with an amazing new friend.
“I’ll leave you to your studying for now. But be forewarned, this endeavor will take far more finesse than your fickle little friend believes. If Bill Weasley is mated, not just married, to his wife, your magic … any magic, will have to take that into account.”
“I do not doubt that for a moment. I definitely need to know more about these things from your world, Severus. Werewolves, wizards, these Veela – these things are not familiar to me at all. I need to study anything you have before we try this.”
“Make your decision carefully, Orra. This is not something you should feel obligated to perform simply because your friend made an unfounded, off based promise on your behalf.”
Snape moved closer to her as he spoke. Orra turned in her chair to face him fully, studying his expression with great care.
“This could endanger you and your friends. Bill Weasley certainly has resigned himself to his scars. While I’m certain he would be grateful, he will understand if this is not something that you can undertake.”
Snape unwrapped his arms and reached down to touch her shoulder gently, as if to reinforce his words.
“Thank you for your concern, Severus.” Orra smiled up at him. “I should like to do the research before I make any decisions.” She reached up to squeeze his hand. “Make yourself at home here. I feel like you are going to spend a fair amount of time with me.”
He squeezed her hand back, still smiling. “I believe I shall be spending a fair amount of time in your company as well, Miss Orra O’Shea.”
“We will have to … hmmm, make some arrangements … to explain your presence.” She stood up and hugged him tight. Shocked, he stood perfectly still for a few seconds before wrapping his arms around her and returning the embrace. She pat his shoulder and moved to the top of the stairs, shouting, “Aideen!”
“Yeah?”
“When you finish done there, how’s about coming up with some credentials for our new friend?”
“Oh! Damn. Yes! I can take care of that!”
“Thanks!”
“He’s a professor, right?” Aideen appeared at the bottom of the stairs to peer up at Orra.
“Severus, you are a professor, correct?” Orra relayed.
“Yes,” he bellowed loud enough for Aideen to hear.
“What do you teach?”
“Potions and Defense against the Dark Arts,” he answered with a fair amount of consternation. “I doubt your University or schools have such courses.”
Orra cocked her head at him. “Potions? Is that like chemistry?”
“I am unsure what this chemistry entails …” he replied. “My skills involve brewing potions from mostly organic ingredients to create useful reactions.”
“Hmmmm, I don’ think chemistry is quite right then, eh Aideen?”
“Agreed. Perhaps organic chemistry or … botany? These ingredients, some are plants and herbs, right?”
“Yes,” Snape affirmed with a bit of confusion.
“Botany it is. No worries! I can pull everything you need. You will be a fantastic visiting professor from …”
“London,” Orra added. “I already told Murphy we met in London last summer.”
“Right then! As soon as I get home I can start on the credentials. Now, where are these Veela books?”
