AN: So, now they know how it happened, but what to do to fix things? I'd really like to know if anyone wants to keep reading this. I don't mind posting it, but not if no one likes it at all.
kex: I rather like you user name. I suspect there will be more 'whats' in you future, but I can only post these as I have written them. Even though it gets very few reviews, I have no intention of rewriting a completed work. I only strive to edit out the spelling or grammar issues. It gets more squicky, but at least there is some erotica to look forward to, (Chap 18, for those who want to wait or skip forward later.)
Chapter Seventeen: Tommy's Hair and Asking for Help
Tommy was asleep when he came home, and Harry had to resist the urge to use a shaving spell on the boy's head. He didn't need verification, and that wouldn't take the rune off, so he just watched the sleeping child and sighed as he ran his fingers through the soft black curls.
He had written to Oliver and the Malfoys, telling them what he and Reinhold had found, skipping over the torture scene and leaving out the disturbing forms of childcare that Voldemort had forced Tommy to participate in. He just wanted them to know about the spell that had been used on their son, and that he and the doctor would work on a way of restoring Draco to them.
Now, as he watched his charge, he thought about what that would mean. When Draco returned, what would become of Tommy, and where would Harry fit in? He hated to admit that he was attached to the boy - Tommy Riddle.
Oliver was true to his promise, and came back to Grimmauld the day after the potion wore off and he was back to his true form, once more. He and Harry poured over tomes and searched for an answer to the dilemma of the berc-lagir-rzan rune.
At the end of the week, two days before 'Draco' was to return from his trip, they decided that they needed help. Even Dr. Rheinhold was stumped.
“There's only one person who knows more about runes than Malfoy and Professor Babbling, and that is Hermione Granger.” Harry said and Oliver nodded. “The problem is, I haven't had them over in ages, cause I didn't want them to overreact to Tommy. They have history.”
“I know that. Maybe, they should come over while I'm impersonating Malfoy, so that they will be more comfortable with him as he is.”
“No. I don't want to expose Tommy to a version of himself. I'm afraid that will force him even deeper into his baby version. I don't know how to explain it, other than that.”
“I got ya. So, what do we do?” Oliver was afraid he'd be sent away early, and he was loathe to leave Harry, right now.
“I'll invite them tonight. They can meet Tommy at dinner and I'll explain after, while you get him ready for bed?”
Oliver looked shocked. “You'd be willing to let me take over some of his care? I'm just surprised, cause you've been sort-of overprotective, so far.”
“Well, you won't need to bathe him, or anything like that. Just change him into his pajamas and get him to settle down enough to sleep. You could make potions with him, for his toys.” Harry frowned, “I just want some time to tell them, without him interrupting. That's all.”
“I'll help. I love making potions with him. Sometimes, it's hard to remember that he isn't just a four or five-year-old. He's fun.”
Hermione and Ron were early. They popped out of the floo, carrying some bottles and a cake in a basket, while Harry was in the kitchen, explaining to Kreacher about dinner, and Oliver was trying to calm down a frantic Tommy. The baby had fallen and skinned his knee. There was blood and that's what set him off. “Harry! Tommy needs Harry! No! Not you!” he squirmed in Oliver's arms, kicking and crying. “Harry! Need Harry!” and this is what the two guests walked in on.
Ron had his wand out and Hermione was rushing forward, hers drawn and aimed at the dark-haired boy. “Get away from him, Malfoy!” Ron called.
“No, Ron. It's all right.” Oliver said but Hermione was too fast.
“Stupify!” and Tommy was sent toward the wall with a thud.
“What the hell is going on in her?” Harry said from the hall. “Tommy! Are you all right?” he rushed forward and scooped up Tommy, quickly checking him over for any damage.
“Dat wady spelled me.” Tommy pouted with his face buried in Harry shoulder. “Bad wady.”
“Harry?” Hermione tried.
“Not yet!” Harry shouted as he hurried Tommy out of the room, leaving Oliver to attend his friends.
“Great wand work, Granger. Too bad you're so quick on the draw, though. Harry won't be happy.” Oliver said as he showed them to the parlor. “He's very protective of Tommy.”
“Oliver, what are you doing here? And who was that?”
“Mione, that was Malfoy. What are you talking about?” Ron said.
“Was it?” she said.
“It was, and it wasn't. Let's just sit down, have a bit of. . .what did you bring?” Oliver asked.
“Mum sent some of her special homemade butterbear.” Ron said.
“Sounds perfect. Pass those around. We could probably use something stronger, but Harry doesn't keep anything like that in the house.”
“So, are you staying here, now?” Hermione said.
“Me? No. I'm just visiting, for a couple of days.”
“Bill said you were living with the Malfoys. Is that why you're defending that prat?” Ron started, but any answer was cut off by Harry returning with Tommy holding his hand and hiding behind him. Griffy had accompanied the little boy, as well as Slippy, the snake Lucius had bought on their visit.
“Ron, I'll explain everything to you, but for now, I need you to stop saying vicious things in front of Tommy. Also, put your wands away until you leave, okay?” Harry said pulling Tommy closer and lifting the dark-haired boy into his arms. Tommy leaned in and put his thumb into his mouth. “Kreacher has dinner ready. Is anyone hungry?”
Oliver took the wands that Harry's friends handed him, and he put them on the mantle over the floo, in a box where Harry now kept his. It was a habit they'd gotten into since Tommy had accidentally set fire to the divan with the holly wand only two days before.
“So, this is my friend Hermione Granger-Weasley, Tommy. She's not a bad lady, she just didn't understand what was happening. She's real sorry, aren't you Mione?” Harry said as he led them down the stairs to the kitchen. “And the redhead is Ron.”
“He wooks wike Jowge.” Tommy said.
“Yes, he does. He's George's brother.”
Tommy looked unconvinced. “Jowge is nice.” he said in accusation.
“Ron is nice, too. You need to give him a chance. Now, sit here and let's have dinner. Can you feed yourself?”
“Want you to.” Tommy said with a glare at the two new adults as Harry put him into one of the chairs that had been altered to keep him from sliding off if he was having one of his bad days.
“Okay. Sit down, everyone.” Harry took the place next to Tommy and Oliver moved to the other side. Ron and Hermione were left with the other chairs that were across from the odd group.
“So, Tommy is it?” Hermione asked and Tommy nodded. “How long have you been living with Harry?”
“Harry is savior. Harry saved Tommy. He takes care of Tommy. Harry knows what a spessle baby needs.” Tommy seemed to want to speak, so Harry held the spoon patiently and when the words slowed he put it into Tommy's mouth. “Mmmm. Soup.” the resultant spray would have curled Lucius' toes, so Oliver laughed out loud.
“You should hold your questions until he's finished, if you don't want to wear dinner.” Harry said with a smirk toward Oliver. “I'll fill you in. Tommy moved in about two months ago. He's been living here with me, because he needs special care. He's very special, right Ollie?”
“Super special. And I've been living with the Malfoys for even longer, and that's not why I'll defend Tommy, but I will. Don't fear that.” Oliver glared at Hermione from over his own bowl. Harry managed to get most of the soup into his charge as the others watched and when Kreacher brought in the salads, he shook his head and the elf brought Tommy a plate of cut up sandwiches.
“Tommy can eat these while we have the rest of our meal. He's good with sandwiches, aren't you?”
“Can I habb a bottle?” Tommy asked and Harry smiled.
“When you finish your sandwiches. Oliver will take you up to get ready for bed, and you can have a bottle and a story.”
“A story about Merwin?”
“Oh, yes. My favorite. I love stories about Merlin.” Oliver said and the boy snatched up a piece of sandwich and stuffed it into his mouth.
After the salads, there was steak and potatoes, vegetables and mulled wine. Kreacher had pulled out all the stops, and Tommy was looking very tired by the time he had finished his food and was watching the others eat. “Ollie, can you take him up, now?” Harry asked.
“You bet. Come on, Buddy. Accomodata.” Oliver said as he picked up Tommy and hoisted him onto his shoulders. Thanks to the spell, there was no danger of Tommy bumping the ceilings. “I'll be down later. Kreacher, can you keep my food warm for me?”
“Kreacher can.” the elf said with a wave of his hand that covered the plate with a soft red glow.
“Okay, so now I'll explain. First, I want you to promise to listen to everything I have to say. If you can't, then you should just go.” the other two nodded seriously as Harry pushed his plate away. “It started outside of Wrognats. . . .”
“Ollie?” Tommy said as the ex-quidditch captain tucked him in. He had changed Tommy into his jammies and handed him the bottle that was filled with a nutrient potion Harry was trying to help the fact that Tommy was a picky eater. As he reached for one of the story books that Harry approved for bedtimes, Tommy pulled the bottle out of his mouth and looked up. “Is Harry busy?”
“Well, yes he is. He has guests.” Oliver said. “But, I'll take care of you. I can read to you and stuff.”
“Is he too busy for Tommy?” the boy asked.
“No, never. But, do you need him? I'm here.” Oliver was worried that this was something serious.
“Ollie will take care of Tommy? Ollie can take care of a baby?”
“Ollie wants to. What do you need, Tommy?” Oliver said petting the dark curls on Tommy's forehead to check for a fever.
“Tommy needs a change.”
“Oh!” Oliver said with sudden realization.
“You're telling me that that was Malfoy, and that Voldemort turned him into a child, his child?” Ron snapped. “That you want Hermione to help you fix him?”
“Ronald, that's enough. Harry, what rune is on him?” the woman asked and Harry pulled out the parchment that Tommy had drawn his blanket on. “That's . . . that's Draco's work. I had to sit near him in class. I'd know his runes anywhere. Oh, my god. That rune is rare. You said it's on his head? That he was forced to be idle for a month to enable the rune to gain power?”
Hermione had gone into study mode and Ron was guzzling down his butterbear with a vengeance. “Great. Now she'll be spending all of her time in the library or a book store.”
“Sorry, Mate. But, I need her help.“ Harry said.
“S'alright. I guess we should go home. Mum's been worried. Call her?” he led his new wife into the floo and took them back to the burrow. Harry smiled and nodded. He sighed before hurrying up the stairs.
Outside of the nursery, he stopped when he heard voices. “It's okay, little guy. I had some rough times, when the war was just over. I had been under that spell for months. I had to relearn this too. I didn't much like these, myself. But, at least you have someone who cares to do what you need. I had to change myself. That was a bother. Now, how's that? Too tight?”
Tommy reached up and hugged Oliver, his smile bright and happy.
Harry pushed the door open, and walked across to the makeshift changing table. “Ollie, you are something else. Thanks. For both of us, right Tommy?”
Tommy was tucked in, bottle in his mouth and a stuffed animal under each hand. He hadn't lasted through the story, but that wasn't the purpose most nights. He was out and Harry gently pried the bottle from his lips. He put it aside and pushed the covers up higher.
When he turned out the light, Oliver touched his back with an open palm. “You're a great dad, Harry.” he said.
“Shhh.” Harry closed the door and set the monitor spell before leading Oliver down the hall. “You weren't so bad yourself. Ollie, I know you had it rough. I caught that bit about your . . .”
“My diaper time? Yeah, it was weird. I don't think I want to talk about that, right now.”
“I know. What I was gonna suggest is, if you have problems with intimacy, maybe it would be okay, as long as I was on the bottom?” Harry had hoped that they would be able to overcome Oliver's past, but every time they did anything more than kiss, the other wizard had frozen up. He was willing to go further, even if this was the only way.
“Are you serious?” Oliver asked and Harry nodded. “It's worth a try.”
Harry smiled and pulled him into his bedroom.
