A Woman & Chaos (A.N.- I have just updated 2 chapters, so if you started on this one, go back to Chapter 16 and Read A Woman's Friend, first :D Cheers)
Hermione took the strange little box from Harry with shaking hands. She handled it gingerly, almost as if it were going to burn her skin. She looked up at Harry, tears forming in her eyes. Harry reached over and touched her shoulder, squeezing it gently.“It’s going to be alright. I promise.”
She nodded, biting her lip, fighting the extreme flip flop of emotion filling her belly and mind. The exhaustion and recollection of the past few weeks weighed heavily upon her weary psyche, and the tears spilled down her cheeks in silent rivulets of despair.
“I should have given him a chance to explain – I – I didn’t know he was at a conference. Oh, Harry, he doesn’t even know what’s happened and now I’ve sent him away! If he confronts Mr. Malfoy and – and – oh, sweet Merlin!” She held the box to her chest, its warmth radiating a comforting cadence against her gasping breath and racing heart.
Harry continued to bear silent witness, lowering his forehead to hers and murmuring solace to the distraught witch. An alarm sounded, a flashing light pulsing above her belly as a sharp cramp hit her stomach.
Hermione gasped, grasping at her belly in pain. “Harry! The baby!”
Harry ran to the door, flinging it open as two Healers and an attendant dashed past him, the attendant soothing the young witch as the Healers performed a series of diagnostic spells.
“Miss Granger, I’m going to put you into a light stasis. The child is fine, but your body is still in shock. When you are stabilized you will be revived.”
Hermione nodded, more tears escaping her as she let out a sob of pain and confusion. “Harry!”
He rushed to her side, grasping her hands in his own. “It’s going to be alright. The Healers will make sure you’re safe, and I won’t leave you.”
She nodded, her eyes closing as a Healer performed a complicated spell over her form, inducing a healing coma so her body and emotions could recover from their ordeal.
Another alarm sounded suddenly, and the Healer performing the stasis and stabilizing functions barked to the other, “Healer Green! Go to triage, I’ll finish with Miss Granger and be there as soon as I’m done.”
The younger Healer nodded and dashed out of the room. The attendant continued to assist the older Healer, taking orders, setting new diagnostic charms and changing Hermione’s linens and bedclothes as Harry peeked into the hallway, his eyes averted for her privacy.
“I wonder what’s going on?” he wondered aloud.
He was startled to see Ginny come dashing through the warded door and down the corridor towards Hermione’s hospital room. He had been unaware she’d been afforded permission to enter the area, but assumed Kingsley must have spoken with and given her leave as well.
He looked behind him, and seeing the others were busy with his best friend and that she was resting peacefully, he stepped out and grabbed her forearms as she skidded to a halt.
“Harry! Oh thank Merlin you’re here!”
“Gin, slow down! What’s wrong? Is it the kids?”
Ginny shook her head, out of breath, her eyes red-rimmed and her body shaking. “No,” she gasped, desperately trying to regain her equilibrium. After another full minute, she continued, meeting her husband’s worried green eyes. “The kids are fine. The baby still has a fever, but she’s alright.” She gulped in another lungful of air and continued. “Tonks was running late, but she came to babysit instead when Remus contacted her to watch the children so I could come to the hospital.”
Harry shook her lightly. “Alright, so what are you doing here? What happened?”
Ginny shook her head, tears pooling in her eyes. “It’s mum. My brothers, Lavender and Remus went to the Burrow for supper, and … and… “ She let out a sob, rushing forward and flinging her arms around Harry. “Oh Harry – Lucius Malfoy was there – they walked in and he was raping mum! Before they could do anything, he Disapparated. Mum was naked and bleeding. We brought her to the emergency ward. The boys and Remus are with her now.”
Harry was dumbstruck. What in Merlin’s name was going on? It felt as if the world were falling down around their lives, and although he was relieved the children were alright, alarm bells were going off inside of his head like mad. He was torn between wanting to take off after Lucius Malfoy himself, go with Gin down to the emergency ward to support his mother-in-law, and keep his promise to stay with Hermione.
The powerful young wizard held her at arm’s length, his green eyes hard. “I promised ‘Mione I’d stay with her, but I need to go help your father find Malfoy.”
Extreme confusion filled Ginny’s tear-stained face as she gaped at her husband, trying to understand what he was saying. “Why is Dad looking for Lucius Malfoy? He wasn’t at the Burrow when everyone got there. Is there something going on I don’t know about?”
Her worry and confusion just about broke Harry’s heart, hating keeping information from her, but knowing he was not at liberty to divulge everything that was going on at the moment. Time seemed to be of the essence.
“Listen to me,” he implored her, passing over her inquiry to instead make a request. “I will explain everything to you when the time is right, but right now, I need you to stay with Hermione in case she wakes up. The Healers have put her into a healing stasis to help her body mend. It’s important someone is here when she wakes up.”
“But-“
“No Ginny, I don’t have time to explain.”
“But what about Mum?” she cried, looking behind her and back at her determined husband.
Harry shook his head slowly. “Your brothers and Remus will take care of her. I’m sure they will understand, given the circumstances. I will stop by the emergency ward on the way out and let them know where you are, and where I’m going. Trust me Gin, I know what I’m doing.”
The young witch nodded, holding hands with her husband tightly for a moment. They embraced suddenly, lips coming together to share a desperate, parting kiss.
“Please, be safe Harry,” Ginny called out as he struck out a determined stride down the ward’s hallway.
“I will,” he called back, disappearing past the warded doorway.
Ginny bit her lip and shook her head, afraid, confused and full of worry for so many people she loved. She slowly went into Hermione’s room and talked briefly with the Healer, than took up vigil next to her friend’s bedside, holding her hand and talking to the unconscious witch about the children, times gone by, and everything in between to distract herself from the worry gnawing at her insides.
HGAWHarry’s long strides ate up the hallway and he burst into the emergency ward in double time. The Healer he recognized as Healer Green flew past him in a flurry of robes, and a red head popped out from behind a curtain. Sobbing could be heard, as well as Remus’ soothing voice and the obnoxious sound of Lavender complaining to Ron that she was hungry.“Charlie!”
The tall, strappy dragon-tamer stepped forward and clasped hands with Harry. He wore a grim look on his face. “Good to see you, mate. Wish it were under better circumstances.” He indicated the curtained room containing his mum.
“Yeah, Gin just told me. I’m so sorry this happened to your mum. I wanted to let you know that she’s upstairs with Hermione.”
Charlie frowned, but nodded his understanding. Of course he had no way of knowing why Hermione was in hospital, but being a man of practical means like his father, took the news in stride.
“Right. So where are you off to?”
Harry shook his head to the negative. “Let’s just say I’ve got some hunting to do.”
“Hey, can you do me a favor?” He jerked his head back toward the room again. “Ron and Lavender are arguing about stupid shit. They’re upsetting mum. Think you can help get rid of them?”
Harry agreed, and they pulled the curtain aside slightly.
Charlie poked his head in and called out, “Oi, Ron, Lav, I need to talk to you for a minute.”
The annoying arguing ceased as the two slipped out into the hallway.
Ron’s eyes flicked from Harry to Charlie and back again and Lavender sighed heavily.
“Won Won, I’m hungry! Can’t we go get something to eat?” she whined.
Ron ducked his head when Charlie glared at him.
“Harry, did Charlie tell you about mum?”
“Yeah – he also told me you and Lavender are upsetting her.”
Ron’s face flushed bright red and he blanched. “What? That’s not true!”
“Ron, when are we going to go?” Lavender moaned, pulling on his robes.
Ron shrugged her off, ignoring her for a moment.
Charlie stepped a bit closer to his brother, laying a hand on his arm. “Why don’t you take Lav to get something to eat, and me and Fred and Remus will stay with mum.”
“Ron!” Lavender’s shrill voice cut in.
“Shut up!” Ron barked, turning on her. “Just shut up for five minutes, would you? Bloody hell Lav, my mum’s hurt and all you can think about is your bloody stomach.”
Harry thought the irony of that statement coming from Ron would have been funny, if not for the seriousness of the situation.
Lavender sulked, folding her arms over her chest and stalking off a few paces, her back to them.
Charlie gestured to Lavender. “No offense, mate, but you really need to get her out of here. She’s not doing us any good here.”
Ron hated that his brother was right. “Yeah, alright. Come on Lav, let’s go.”
“Finally!” she snapped, grabbing Ron’s robe sleeve and pulling him along.
Charlie rolled his eyes and gestured back to the room. “I’ll let the others know where Gin’s at. Remus will probably want to go check on Tonks and the sprogs, but me and Fred will stay.”
“Give Molly my regards.”
“Yeah, will do.”
Harry swiped his hand over his face, grimacing. “Damn Malfoys.”
He turned and walked out of the hospital, with no idea where Arthur was and no plan in place, but with a grim determination he’d not had since he’d battled and defeated Voldemort.
HGAWMolly’s sobs finally subsided, and she clutched the magically warmed blanket to her chest. Remus held a cool cloth to her head, and Fred sat by the bedside and held her hand. Healer Green shooed them out as he did a thorough examination of the distraught witch. His frown did nothing to allay the fears of the Weasley matriarch.“What? How bad is it?” she asked, her voice still slightly hysterical.
The Healer scourgified the area and his hands, than handed Molly a potion to calm her nerves. She drank it down obediently, relaxing into the pillow. The Healer spoke with her for several minutes before allowing the others back into the room. He held Charlie and Fred back, confirming they were next of kin. He cast a Muffliato and gravely informed them of her state.
“Your mother will need to be admitted, but should be fine to return home within a few days.”
The boys were silent, nodding as Healer Green continued.
“I’m more concerned about her psychological state. There are several techniques we can employ to remove or lessen the pain of the memory, however, none of them are foolproof, and she will need counseling and familial support for some time to come. Emotions tend to be volatile in victims of rape, regardless of modified memories or potion administration. The only real thing that will help her is time and support.”
Charlie growled low in his throat, his hands balled into fists. Fred looked murderous and he swallowed heavily to control himself.
“You may spend some time with your mum, but she will need time to recuperate. I will ensure a room is readied for her immediately, however, only one family member or guest is allowed to stay with her.”
“I’ll stay, I’m on leave,” Charlie volunteered. He looked at Fred. “That way I can check up on Gin and Hermione, as well.”
Fred leveled his brother a puzzled look, but the silent exchange between siblings was understood he’d be filled in later.
The Healer nodded and they returned to the room to support their mother, who was now napping lightly, Remus continuing to administer cold cloths to her head and hum under his breath.
