A/N: Just a brief little wrap up here for you!
The office of the Headmistress was cozy; the fire was burning at a leisurely pace in the hearth the sun was creating a slight warmth as it filtered its midday rays through the window, catching the reflections of the crisp white snowfall that blanketed the grounds. The tea service rested on the small table in front of the plush sofa that faced the fire. Minerva McGonagall placed her empty cup down and nodded with a small but familiar smile on her lips. “I trust your sabbatical was well then?” she asked.
Poppy Pomphrey was beaming. “Oh it was brilliant, getting to be away and study new things, meet new people, new sorts of medical maladies, it was brilliant, Minerva, I really did need it.”
The Headmistress refilled her cup. “More tea?” she asked the other witch.
“Please,” she said handing her the cup. They sat sipping tea in silence for another long while as they had the first two rounds after the Mediwitch’s arrival to the office. “So,” Poppy said after a long swallow, finishing her third cup of tea. “When can I expect to start back?” she asked. “I know there’s paperwork and the like to discharge Miss Granger back to St. Mungo’s, that usually only takes a week or so, if I remember correctly.”
Minerva set her teacup down and the gentle smile on her lips slowly faded. “Poppy…”
“I will be starting back, won’t I? You told me you would hold my position, Minerva, that I would still have a job waiting for me when I came back.”
“That was almost three years ago,” she said.
“You said take the time I needed!”
“Things have changed,” she said. “And at this time I just don’t have it in the budget to hire on two Mediwitches, surely you can understand that.”
Poppy huffed indignantly. “Well I know that but you don’t need two, simply send Hermione Granger back to Mungo’s, I’m the predecessor to the position and that should be all there is to it.”
“If you’ve a moment between your squabbling, Minerva…”
Minerva McGonagall would have dropped her teacup had she still been holding it when his voice sliced through their debate which had just been on the verge of turning ugly. “Severus!” she said, standing immediately, surprised to see him just inside the doorway of her office.
“There was no ward on the door and I did knock,” he said with a lackluster shrug of his shoulders. “Far be it from me to know you were in the midst of a…” he let his lips curl into a rather thin smirk. “Whatever this is.”
Minerva gave him a stern glance. “Severus I don’t need your tongue in cheek at this moment I’ve a very delicate situation on my hands—”
“Severus— that’ll show you,” said Poppy as she bounded up to her feet from the sofa. “He’s the reason you’ll need to give me my job back, I know his condition thoroughly more thoroughly than any trained professional. Minerva, surely you know I’m right,” she pleaded with the older woman.
“Are you certain about that, Madam Pomphrey?” he asked with a sneer. “I daresay that your piss poor knowledge of how to treat my condition is what led you to your frivolous leave of absence in the first place.” The rather dumpy woman blanched at his comment, for a moment all color drained from her face and then instantly refilled with a livid scarlet tone. But Severus spoke again before giving her a chance to retort. “I’d go even further to say that in your absence…as my condition has progressed you are now no longer the most informed medical professional in regards to my case,” he stalked the five steps across the distance of the office and slapped a piece of parchment into Minerva McGonagall’s hand.
“Is that so,” said the Mediwitch, who was a diminutive woman at best compared to Severus’s towering stature, as she stood up on her toes trying to match his dour gaze. “And just whom do you think is so much more informed?”
“That would be me,” Hermione said softly, stepping through the open doorway of the office. “Sorry, Minerva, the door was open,” she said sheepishly and then she fixed her gaze on Severus, narrowing her eyes. “How on earth did you get up here before me?”
Turning around with a rather sly smirk crossing his lips he quirked an eyebrow. “With muscles so limber I daresay that I can out maneuver you through the corridors, Miss Granger.” He paused a moment and let his lips curl into a feral grin. “And given your current excessive weight, I daresay that your sluggish pace gave me even more of an advantage.”
Hermione flushed a solid red in the face and then quickly pushed past him, a piece of parchment in her hand as well. She was far more graceful as she handed it to the Headmistress. McGonagall frowned, looking from the first piece of paper to the next, her eyes narrowing her lips pursing as she compared the two. She spared a quick glance to Hermione, her eyes looking the younger witch up and down for a moment before clucking a tut of disapproval. “He’s right, Hermione, you are putting it on rather quickly,” she said.
Hermione hadn’t fully finished flushing from the first insult to her weight gain when she felt her cheeks stinging red again. “Him I’d expect this from, but you, Minerva? Honestly?” she asked and crossed her arms over her chest.
“Yes, well, given such short notice,” she waved both pieces of parchment in front of Hermione’s face before sighing. Minerva pulled her square spectacles from her face and let them hang from the chain around her neck.
“You accept then?” Severus asked, nodding toward Minerva.
“Do I have a choice? If you’re tendering your resignation you’re tendering your resignation, it would have been nice if at least one of you would have let me know sooner so that I could have started head hunting the position,” she muttered.
“Oh honestly, Minerva, it isn’t like you don’t have candidates in mind,” Hermione said pointedly and crossed her arms over her chests, pushing her rather swollen breasts up a bit higher than was intentional.
Minerva rolled her eyes and scoffed. “This is just bloody brilliant, those studying Potions to become masters aren’t what they used to be, you know,” she said fixing her pointed gaze at Severus.
“What?” Poppy Pomphrey, who seemed momentarily slow on the uptake, gawked at Severus. “You can’t resign— you’re my ace in the hole! If you’re not here she has no bloody reason to give me my job back!”
Hermione couldn’t help herself as she started to giggle. “Forgive me,” she said cupping her hand to her mouth. “But, that second parchment there,” she said nodding toward the Headmistress, “That is my resignation as well, so I’m sure she’ll have plenty of reasons to reinstate you as the Hogwarts Mediwitch, Madam Pomphrey.”
Minerva shrugged her shoulders. “Well that’s one less problem, I suppose, but this is still highly unorthodox—”
“You’ve got three full weeks before classes resume from the Christmas holiday, Minerva,” Hermione said. “Honestly you’re acting like he waited until the morning the students came back to tell you.”
Minerva McGonagall folded both pieces of parchment and then put her spectacles back up on her nose. “You really should get checked out, dear,” she said turning a sternly playful gaze to Hermione. “You shouldn’t be gaining all that weight so quickly, so early.”
“As of this afternoon, Minerva, it will not be your concern,” Severus said and then nodded to Hermione. “If you accept our resignation, we’ll be packed and off before the day’s out, we’ve plans to spend Christmas someplace warm.” As if Poppy Pomphrey hadn’t already been dumbfounded her bulging eyes said it all as she gazed at the two of them, Severus taking Hermione’s hand. He nodded to the Headmistress, and Hermione did the same, worrying her lower lip between her teeth.
“Very well then, Happy Christmas to you three,” she said with a sigh.
Glancing up at Severus with a pleading gaze in her eyes, Hermione pouted her lips. Severus rolled his eyes. “Fine,” he said and Hermione squeezed his hand.
“Happy Christmas to us four, Minerva,” she said with a large grin on her lips. “It’s twins.”
