Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or the Wizarding World created by J.K. Rowling. I also do not make any money from any of the stories I write. It is pay enough getting to play with these characters. |
I didn't keep you waiting too long for this. I know I shouldn't be writing three big stories at the same time, but I can't help myself. We find out what happened to Hermione and see how this impacts the people in her life. We also get a rare look into the "real" side of Severus Snape.
Living Chapter 17
Harry and Ginny ran down the hall, holding hands, towards the dungeons. It was after 8:00 p.m. and there had been no sign of Hermione since earlier in the day. The corridors were mainly empty as they scurried to talk to Professor Snape. It had taken Harry an hour to calm Ginny down enough to plan out to head to the dungeons. They were worried, but thought that she was probably with Snape, but they couldn't say that out loud in front of others; at least that's where they hoped she was.
Harry raised his fist to bang on the potion master's door. The loud sound from the banging echoed through the dark hall of the cold dungeons. No one came to the door. Harry looked over at Ginny, shrugging his shoulders.
"Maybe they're busy and don't want to be disturbed." He grimaced as he looked towards Ginny. "I know the last time I interrupted them Snape wasn't happy with me." Harry really hated being on the wrong side of an angry Professor Snape.
"It wasn't your fault Harry, you'd just been attacked," Ginny said pushing Harry towards the door again.
Harry knocked on the door once more, his feet moving back and forth as he waited. Ginny waited by his side, slightly behind her boyfriend. The door was opened with a bang. Severus Snape stood there glaring at Harry and Ginny. His eyes bore into them, "What do I owe the displeasure of this impromptu visit?" Snape folded his arms in front of his chest, waiting for an answer from the Gryffindors.
Harry and Ginny looked at each other, both waiting for the other to speak first. Ginny reached out and pinched Harry in the side. Harry jumped and glared at his girlfriend, "That hurt Gin." He rubbed his waist where it still stung from Ginny's pinch.
"Professor Snape, we were wondering if Hermione was with you." Ginny finally came out asking, tired of the standoff between her and Harry.
The stern look usually worn by Severus Snape slid away and something else appeared: fear and concern. "When was the last time you saw her?"
He looked at them, and then hastily pulled them both by the arm into his office. Slamming the door shut, he motioned to the chairs in front of his desk, and he swept around them to sit in his own large, winged back chair. The darkness of the office only contributed to the gloomy mood all three of them were currently in.
"I last saw her this morning at breakfast, but Harry was with her during double potions class with you and the other eighth years." Ginny looked at her potions professor as he sat watching her explain herself. His piercing gaze made her nervous just as it did during class. Would he flip out when he found out why neither one of them had seen her during the lunchtime? Yes, they had been caught up in each other for a few minutes there, but it really wasn't their job to babysit Hermione was it?
Ginny looked over to Harry who acted as if he wanted to run from Snape's office if given the chance. His clenched fists were down at his sides, as he sat on the edge of his chair looking back and forth between Snape and the door. If Harry left now she'd never forgive him. Gryffindor courage seemed to be lacking at the moment between the two of them and they had to figure out where Hermione was. She had a bad feeling that something had happened to her friend. Now that they knew she wasn't with the man she was involved with romantically, every bad thought started running through her mind.
Snape sat glaring at them, his fingers steepled under his chin. He was deep in thought and Ginny knew better than to interrupt the man.
"Does anyone else know that Hermione is missing?" Snape asked as he shifted in his chair, crossing his legs. His hands smoothed down the imaginary wrinkles in his trousers. Ginny could tell her professor was showing uncommon signs of being nervous, which he never usually did. This only made her heart beat faster. If Snape was this concerned about Hermione, then something bad must have happened.
Snape stood, knocking into his big, wooden desk. "You two know how large this castle is. It would take us days to search everywhere by ourselves." His raised voice was normal to them, but not the concern they could hear hiding there.
"What should we do then Sir?" Ginny was close to tears now, feeling the sense of urgency streaming from Snape.
"We will go to the main hall and try to summon her bag and her wand. From there we will be able to see what direction they will be coming from." Ginny tried to smile at Snape. He really was as intelligent as Hermione always said he was.
"I'll also contact the house elves in our search for Hermione. They know what is happening in this castle as much as any headmaster of Hogwarts ever has."
Snape headed to the door. "Are you coming or not?" His spoken words were sharp and biting as he rushed past Harry and Ginny. They stood quickly, holding hands and hurrying after their professor.

Oh Gods! What happened to her head? She couldn't move and the whole world was spinning. Every bone in her body ached. It was dark in the castle indicating it was nighttime. How long had she been lying here? Hermione didn't remember anything since she'd left Severus and was heading back to Gryffindor tower.
Hermione wished she had a pain potion for her head. It really hurt. She put her hand up to the back of her head. Drawing her hand back around she gasped as she saw the blood dripping off. Once again she tried lifting her head up to only realize she couldn't move. Even trying to lift her legs to attempt at standing was useless too. She could feel that one leg was bent at an odd angle. Putting her right hand out she grasped around her looking for her wand. From her position she couldn't see her wand or her bag.
Where was Severus? Would he realize she was missing? Would Harry and Ginny search for her? She had never felt this helpless before. Waves of pain shot through her body again. She realized she was having a hard time breathing. She coughed hard spitting up a mouthful of blood. Hermione groaned as she lay her head back against the floor, feeling the blood trickling down the side of her face. Her lungs felt like they were on fire. She'd bet a 100 galleons that she had some broken ribs. She was in bad shape inside and out. The tears came as she realized she could be bleeding to death and maybe wouldn't be found in time to save her.
Her mind cried out to Severus as she started to lose consciousness…
'Come find me please.'
'I'm hurt badly.'
'I don't want to be alone.'
'I want to love you.'
'I'm dying'

Severus felt a pang of heartache that ripped through his chest. It hurt like he'd been stabbed straight through with a knife. He could feel that something was wrong with Hermione. He never should have let her leave his classroom alone. He wanted to blame her friends on not watching over her, but he knew he was ultimately the one who was the last person to be with her. The blame should be clearly set in his lap, literally, concerning that had been the last place she'd been hours ago.
His long legs carried him faster than what Harry and Ginny could keep up with. The sense of urgency pushed him harder than he thought he could move. The noise from his rippling cape could be heard as he rushed through the halls. He was not going to lose out on this chance of happiness with a beautiful, and caring woman. He had realized how much he truly was starting to care for Hermione.
"Wait up Professor. We can't walk as fast as you." He heard Ginny yelling behind him through the halls.
Stopping abruptly he swirled around, his black robes whipping in the air and truly encircling him like bat's wings.
"It is not my problem that you and Mr. Potter's legs are shorter than mine. Keep up or shut up."
He turned back around and hurried away at a fast pace once again. Ginny and Harry glared at the back of the man, who despite being involved with their best friend who was a kind and loving person; this man was still snarky and irritable. It seemed that he only had patience for one Hogwarts student, and she was currently missing.
By the time Harry and Ginny made it to the Entrance Hall on the main floor, Snape was standing with his arms folded across his chest, while he tapped his foot in a steady rhythm. His black eyes glittered with annoyance, and his pursed lips showed his displeasure at their lagging behind.
"Did you stop for refreshments along the way?" The sarcastic words tumbled from his velvety rich voice.
Harry tried not to laugh at the Professor as Ginny shoved him hard in the ribs. "Yes, Professor Snape we stopped for a fry-up in the Great Hall as we passed by. Sadly we ate it all with nothing left for you." Ginny stared up at Snape with her hands on her hips. When fired up, Ginny Weasley hadn't learned to back down, even to an authority figure.
Harry scurried in-between the two strong personalities, "What next Professor Snape?" His hands went behind his back to stop Ginny from moving around to the front.
Severus took a deep breath, as his fingers pinched the bridge of his nose. "Now we try to summon her things. Hopefully one of us will see the direction in which they come from."
The three stood back to back in a circle in defense mode. Harry and Ginny looked over their shoulders as Snape took out his wand, "Accio Hermione's wand and bag."
Now with a bit of luck they would soon be seeing her things flying their way.

Looking down the Grand Staircase was a curious Ron Weasley. Hiding behind a large, golden tapestry bearing the Hogwarts crest, he watched a rather odd scene. Down below stood his best mate, his sister and his hated potions professor. Why were they standing in a defensive cluster stance? It was odd that only Snape had his wand out. Ron looked to the front doors of the main entrance hall, but they looked to be firmly shut for the night. Were they waiting for some kind of attack?
"They've all been acting rather peculiar lately?" he whispered out loud to himself. "I wonder where Hermione is." Ron thought that she probably would think of some possible reason for what was happening down in the main hall. He held still, only peeking out a few times to see if the three down below had moved. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw some objects whizzing down the stairs, past him and heading towards the entrance.
"Look!" he heard Harry shout out. Snape turned just in time to reach out and grab the items. He held them gently to his chest.
Ron's eyes strained to make out what Snape was holding, but he was too far away. He was also at a bad angle, as he was still trying to stay hidden behind the tapestry. Well he wasn't moving until he knew what they were doing. He stood quietly, his back against the cold, stone wall, waiting for them to move.

Snape went running up the stairs followed closely by Harry and Ginny. They searched around on the first floor, but didn't find Hermione. They did the same searching around the second floor, still with no luck. Finally on their hunt for the missing girl, they found her on the third floor in The Armoury, a corridor adjacent to the Trophy Room where a bunch of suits of armour were on exhibition in the corridor. Hermione was sprawled out on her back in a puddle of blood, unconscious. Severus came skidding to a stop, standing in shock looking at Hermione's broken body. He dropped to his knees beside her feeling for a pulse. Withdrawing his wand he started a scan of the rest of her vital signs.
"Miss Weasley run and get Madam Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing." His words of a direct order were spoken low and with a gravely voice.
Harry stood nearby, gawking in disbelief at his friend. "Mr. Potter go and get the Headmistress... now." Harry turned and ran down the corridor without a word.
Severus was alone with Hermione. His hand reached out to run down her pale face. "Oh sweet Hermione," the words were almost whispered. "Hang on love."
He wanted to do something, like take her in his arms and hold her forever. Snape knew the best thing to do in an injury like this was to leave her be until Poppy Pomfrey had a look at her. He pinched his lips closed trying to stifle his moans of anguish at finding her almost dead. He reached out to hold her hand that was deathly cold. Who knew how long she'd been lying here in this state? He looked around to see if Ginny was back with Poppy. As he glanced back at Hermione his heart felt like it would rip from his chest. When had this cheeky wench started to mean so much to him?
Footsteps running down the corridor broke his pained stare from the bleeding girl. Poppy Pomfrey dropped next to Snape. "Dear Gods Severus, what happened to her?" With frantic waves of her wand, the nurse started doing her diagnostic work. Her insensate mumbling with words of, "She's lucky she's still alive," and "She needs to be at St. Mungos" didn't help Severus's racing heart.
"What can I do Poppy?" he felt beyond frantic, terrified he'd lose Hermione when he'd just truly found her. Poppy kept scoping out the injuries all over Hermione's body not answering his question. Severus was afraid if she was avoiding telling him the horrid truth that she wasn't going to make it.
Harry came running up then with Minerva McGonagall. "Severus, Poppy, how is she?"
Poppy shook her head, "Headmistress, she needs to be transported immediately to St. Mungos. There is not more I can do for her here."
Ginny could be heard crying behind the teachers. Severus saw Harry move over to put his arms around her and rubbing her back. Severus locked eyes with his long time friend and mentor, as she noticed him holding his student's hand. Her stern face lifted up high in the air. Looking away, she called for house elves who came and helped Poppy levitate Hermione onto a cot to take her up to the hospital wing. From there she would be taken by floo directly to St. Mungos.
Severus was the last to leave the third floor. He felt numb watching the blood on the floor as it glistened from the dim, torch lights. His head dropped back, eyes closed, as he gave a big sigh. "Don't die on me Hermione. We both have too many reasons to keep on living."

Hermione had been taken to the hospital and Minerva had gone with her. Severus stood with sagging shoulders in the middle of the infirmary trying to control his emotions. His rough hands covered his face as he stood there alone. The old mediwitch came up softly and put her hand on his back. "Severus, I have every faith in the healers at St. Mungos."
Out of the many people at Hogwarts, Poppy Pomfrey knew of the vast secrets that Severus Snape carried around. He turned to face her, "She can't die Poppy. I can't lose another woman that I…" He couldn't finish saying the words. It was too painful to hear them spoken aloud.
Poppy looked at him with sorrow on her face. She reached out to take his hand. "Your secret is safe with me, as always." She smiled sadly at Severus then pulled him into a hug. There were not many people alive that were brave enough to even try and hug Severus, but he allowed it.
"I will let you know as soon as I hear back from Minerva. She's a very strong young lady, as you well know."
"I know Poppy. I wouldn't want her any other way." He leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Good night Poppy."

Back on the third floor, Ron Weasley sat hunched up in a corner behind a group of suits of armor. Ron's head was leaning against his legs that were drawn up to his chest. He sat rocking in shock at what he'd witnessed this night. He knew that his friends had been distant and keeping serets from him, but it wasn't until tonight that he knew the extent of these secrets.
The picture of Hermione, bloody and broken, wouldn't leave his mind. Also plastered there was the picture of the great bat, Snape, and what he'd said to Hermione when he thought no one else was there. How could Hermione be involved with him of all people? Just the thought repulsed him enough to vomit. A wave of anger hit him when he realized that Harry and Ginny also knew what Hermione had been up to with Snape. They had all left him out of everything on purpose.
Ron stood with a red face, hitting the suit of armor closest to him. "They probably laughed knowing they were playing me for a fool!" He flexed his fingers on the hand that now smarted from hitting the armor. He stomped away down the corridor angry at everyone he thought he was close to. He kicked out at one more suit of armor as he was leaving the corridor. The noise echoing down the length where he stamped off. "Damn them! They can just all go bugger off."
