Chapter 16
“No, I don't want to go down there and deal with any of them,” Harry told Lucius with a shake of his head. “I'll just stay up here and eat with you. I'm just sick of it all and can't handle it.”
“It'll be fine, Harry,” Lucius soothed, glancing towards the closed bathroom door where Sirius was taking his shower. This was something he wasn't used to dealing with. Sirius was far better at taking it on for a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was how well he knew Harry, something that could help him decide how best to go about dealing with this mess. Though, honestly, he could understand why Harry felt the way he did. The sniping, cold tones and other foolishness needed to cease, now. “Your blowup probably has plenty rethinking their stance anyway, so they aren't apt to say too much around you. Just go down, handle what's needed then come back up.”
“Don't care,” Harry told him firmly. “I can't do this and play nice. And I don't want to. Enough is enough and they hit my end last night. I've had it, completely. I'll just hide out up here until everyone else is gone.”
Rubbing a hand over his face, Lucius didn't know what to say to that or how to reason with Harry either because he understood the cause behind it. Sighing, he said, “How about this; let me eat and I'll come down with you as Hobbes. I'll stay planted on your lap while you have your breakfast. With all of us together, it makes it easier.”
Looking at Lucius and sighing, Harry said, “I just don't want to. It's crap, all of it, and I can't handle any more. And it's just completely uncalled for.”
“I can appreciate that,” Lucius nodded, trying to think of a way around this newest mess. Up until now, all of them had dealt with what was thrown at them quite well. It appeared that the breaking point for Harry had finally been reached and he was digging his feet in. Sending a message to Sirius about the problem telepathically, hoping the man would hurry, he tried to think of a way around this. Unlike Draco, he couldn't just order Harry to do something. Especially since he knew where the issue was coming from and could understand why Harry was doing it. It wouldn't help for poor Harry to hole up in their room all the time when people were around. No, facing them was something he had to do. Even if it meant blowing up on them several times.
Tossing the issue back and forth in his mind, he finally said, tone distracted, “How about this; let me eat. While I do that, Sirius can go down and see who's about. If it's ones that will cause issues, you'll stay up here. If it's not or he's not sure, you go down to eat. If they start, you blow up on them again. And keep blowing up every time someone pulls these foolish stunts. They will either stay away or, at the very least, not do it around you. This is your home, Harry, at least for now. You shouldn't have to hide in your room because others can't control their impulses. I can have Sirius impart that as well. In fact, I think it needs done. Once he does, I'll make sure I'm around for meal times. That way we're together.” Shaking his head, he said, keeping a soft tone, “There are plenty of issues you need to handle. Sirius can't do them for you, such as picking a career. Then there is the fact that if you're hiding out, speculation will run rampant about what Sirius might be doing to you. That won't aid anything.” Looking up as the door to the en suite opened, he was relieved to see Sirius had finished his daily ablutions. He had laid a foundation, hopefully, and it might be something Sirius could use.
Catching on to what Lucius had done with the situation he passed on, Sirius told Harry, as he buttoned his shirt, “Lucius is right. It's your home. End of discussion. If they can't act like a grown adult, they won't be permitted here. You're allowed to come out of the bedroom without having to worry about someone starting something stupid. And you can damned well sit in the kitchen in your house to eat your meals without someone sniping and acting like a damned kid. If they don't like it? They can get the fuck out and stay away.” Smoothing down his shirt then summoning his robe and putting it on, he said, “And I'm about to go down and make that as fucking clear as I can. Let Lucius eat then he can join us for breakfast. In fact, I think anytime we have to deal with the shites, he needs to stay with us. It can only help until we get out of this nightmare. And I can guarantee that can't come soon enough!”
Reaching out, Lucius put a hand on Harry's head and gave it a soft rub then said, keeping a soothing tone, “He's right. About all of it. I can ensure I'm around for you to hold while dealing with the imbeciles. It should help tremendously.” Lips quirking just slightly, he added, softly, “I rather like it when you hold me anyway. It's not the same as being touched as a human. I'll admit I'm not affectionate like Sirius in many ways, but I like being held and petted. I would also suggest we find a brush so my fur can get a good grooming. Honestly, I'm rather curious as to how that feels.”
Sighing softly, looking between the two, Harry thought it over. He didn't want to face this, all there was to it. It was just to the point he couldn't take much more. Hiding out seemed like a good option to him, as he didn't have to deal with the problem that way. It was just—he didn't want to argue with them either. That wouldn't help anything. As it was, things were going smoothly between the three of them, so he wanted to keep it that way. Shaking his head after a couple minutes, he slumped then said, “I'll try it. If it keeps up, I'm leaving and not doing it again.”
Walking over then taking a seat by his godson, Sirius slipped an arm around Harry and pulled him close then gave him a kiss on the top of the head. Firmly, he stated, “It won't. You have my word it won't. I'm as fed up as you are. What I'm going to do is go down and make it as clear as I can. Then made damned sure that Albus gets the message as well. After that, if they start with the shite, I'm having the elves boot their arses out of the house. All there is to it. I'll have them keep doing it too, until the message gets across and they stop their shite. I really don't give a fuck who it is either or what Albus has to say about it. The end is here, period.” Giving Harry a squeeze, he said, “Let Lucius eat. While he does that, I'll go down and start snarling. By the time the both of us are done, you should be ready to go down.”
With a resigned sigh, Harry nodded. He didn't say anything, though, as he didn't like this at all.
Kissing Harry on the top of the head again, Sirius then stood. “It's fine, Harry. The problem is with the others, not you. And I'm about to make that damned clear.” Seeing his godson nod, he then headed out the door with a determined look on his face. Yeah, this shite was going to stop quick smart and he planned to make that damned clear.
Summoning an elf and having the creature fetch his breakfast, Lucius said, “Nothing to worry about, Harry. While I eat, find an old brush of some kind so we can Transfigure it into something for my fur. I'm rather excited to see how this feels, actually.”
Nodding, Harry stood to go find something, sure he had a brush in his trunk that would work.
Coming into the kitchen, Sirius walked over to the head of the table and put his palms flat on it. Looking around, he was pleased to see that a few of them there were ones he didn't have to worry about. Remus—that was a given. Tonks was acting fine about the whole mess. His assumption was that Remus had explained it all to her in a way that made it clear there was no choice in this. Good. Kingsley was there as well. The man had acted slightly cold, but seemed to have straightened up. Moody was present as well. So far, the man hadn't said anything about it. It was his assumption that he knew enough about such matters that he wouldn't lower himself to snipe. There were a couple others in attendance as well. They were the ones he didn't know about.
Seeing Remus look at him with an arched eyebrow, Sirius launched in. “I'm about to make something as clear as I can. And I want it passed on to Albus as well.”
“What's going on?” Moody asked, looking at the man. As Sirius' color was slightly high, he assumed there was some anger coming. He just had to wait and see what had brought it on.
“I just had to actually talk Harry into coming down here to eat and not hide in our room. He's had all he can take of this shite. And I don't blame him one damned bit. This is his home, people. If you don't like it, I don't rightly give a damn. He's fed up. I'm fed up. If you feel you can't keep the stupid, snarky shite, loaded comments, whatever, to yourself, don't come over. That's all there is to it. All this is hard enough to start with that we don't need people who want to act like idiots helping it. From this point forward, if anyone starts the shite again, I'm having one of the elves toss you out on your arse. I don't give a fuck who you are. And they're going to keep tossing you out until you see sense. I don't rightly give a damn what Albus says. I can close the damn house and not allow the Order to use it. If this shite keeps up, that's exactly what I'm doing, too. Harry's allowed to come down and eat, muck about, do whatever, without having to put up with shite from adults that are acting like kids. I shouldn't have to talk him into coming to the kitchen to have a meal because he can't face it anymore.” Stopping, he glared around then asked, “Any questions? And I want this passed to Albus as well. Because it has to stop.”
“I'll pass it along,” Moody told him firmly, taking a sip from his flask.
“I am dead arse serious here, people,” Sirius snarled, glaring around. “I've had plenty said to and about me for years, so it doesn't bother me a bit. I may snarl back, but that's all. Harry hasn't had to put up with this shite and I refuse to make him. We all know some are going to end up getting tossed out. I can think of one name that I'm sure won't last five fucking minutes. There are a couple more as well. And, beyond them, I don't give a fuck who you are. I'm done. Am I clear?”
“Very clear, Sirius,” Kingsley said softly, looking at the man, feeling slightly guilty over his reaction to what happened.
“I've gotten him to agree to come down to eat. I shouldn't have to do that to start with. He made it clear that any more bullshite and he won't. That's not something I'm going to allow to happen. He's allowed to be down here and eat without putting up with it. You lot will go before I allow that to happen. And I don't give a fuck what anyone says.” Straightening up, he glared around and said, “I'm going to go get him now. So, if you don't want to be the first to land arse first in the park across the street, I suggest you not be an idiot. However, I'm going to let Hobbes have at you first. As close as he is to Harry, I'm sure you'll need a trip to St. Mungos to repair the damage done to you.” Seeing nods, he then swept out, grinding his teeth as he did. With that, he wanted to make damned sure that he got with Lucius to let the man know to start ripping chunks out of the arses that pulled those stunts. Because he was done.
Watching the door close, Remus shook his head. “Someone needs to make what Sirius said clear to everyone, including Albus. And to make sure Albus keeps Severus from igniting a fight he won't win.” Knowing who 'Hobbes' really was, he was sure that if Severus poked Harry or Sirius just once, the man was in for hell. He doubted Lucius would have a problem ripping Severus to shreds. Not to mention it getting back to Tom. No, Severus needed to learn to control certain impulses.
“And all of you need to leave it alone. Poor Harry is probably having a hard enough time as it is. He doesn't need the rest of us making it worse.” Tonks said in a firm voice, looking around. “If the relationship you see between the two hasn't changed since it started, well, what it showed anyway since you've seen it, there's nothing going on. All of us, all along, have sworn Sirius wouldn't hurt Harry. That's not changed.”
“I'll make sure Albus knows,” Moody said once more with a firm nod. “He needs to get with a few that can't seem to let it go or help themselves, to put an end to this. I’m all for letting Sirius or the cat have at them a few times to drive it home, before tossing them out. I'll get with him this morning to make it clear.”
“Good.” Remus said with a sigh of relief, actually amused by what could come of 'Hobbes' taking after Severus. The man might think that was nothing but a cat, however, he was sure that Lucius would let him have it and there was no way 'Hobbes' would end up injured in the fight. That could be right amusing to watch, actually!
Coming into the kitchen, hand on Harry's back, Sirius glared around, making damned sure that everything was calm. He was amused, though, by the snarl from Hobbes, the kind of thing you heard from house cats when they were seriously pissed, something that seemed to mimic a tiger. It appeared that Lucius was sending out fair warning to everyone as well. Good. Lucius assured him that the first person that started again was going to feel the full fury of the cat. Another good thing as far as he was concerned. Let them tangle with Lucius. The man would make damned sure the point was driven home.
Guiding Harry over so that he would be sandwiched between him and Remus, he sat down and sent for their breakfast. Reaching over to pet Hobbes, grinning as the cat purred loudly, though he was glaring around the table, he asked, as he took his tea from an elf, “Anything we need to know about?”
“Actually, yes,” Moody said with a snort as he eyed the cat. It seemed the ball of fur was bound and determined to take on anyone that messed with his human. Quickly, he checked to make sure that it was just a cat and not something else, as Albus had asked him to, but didn't see anything off. It was just another cat, as expected. An expensive one, but a cat nonetheless. From the way the animal acted, it probably had some kind of Magical creature blood in it somewhere. That wasn't odd, honestly. Plenty of those made it into Muggle stores because of the way they looked or certain traits. Probably why the cat had attached to Harry so fast. As it was nothing to worry about, he pressed on, “I'm supposed to tell you that the Ministry is getting with your solicitor about clearing you. They are trying to keep it quiet, but from what I heard your solicitor is bound and determined to make it public then push for reparations.”
“Let him,” Sirius said honestly, taking his first bite of breakfast after shoving the mail Remus passed to him aside. “I want it to sting. As it should have never happened to start with, I want it to hurt and become public, both.”
“Can't blame you there, lad,” Moody told him honestly. “Just—if I were you, get a note off to your solicitor about getting this done as fast as he can manage. That article has set plenty alight. Which is good. That means the Ministry's feet are being held to the fire. You can get plenty out of it. What you don't want is for them to drag it out. The sooner you're cleared, the better off you're going to be.” Pushing some papers over to Sirius, he added, “Albus wants you to fill those out and get them to your solicitor. Most aren't anything earth-shattering. He does want your Animagus form registered so you don't have problems down the road. That you probably need to do to hold off trouble and protect yourself.”
Taking the forms and looking them over, Sirius nodded. “I'll fill this all out later. Then send it off.” What he planned to do was get with Lucius so the man could look them over so he knew what the hell he was filling out and signing before he did anything.
“I'm also supposed to pass along that Albus and Minerva, both, are leaning on the Board to get the papers you need through as fast as they can manage. They aren't saying why, of course, and all things to do with the Board dealing with matters like this are kept private by spells. So, it won't slip out,” Moody told him.
“Moody, Tonks and I are all getting our hands on everything we can about careers and classes not normally taught,” Kingsley added, grinning at the cat that was actually glaring at him. Yeah, that cat probably wouldn't have any problem ripping someone to shreds for pissing Harry off. And it was a right riot to ponder someone tangling with the animal!
“We figured if we did it this way, no one would get suspicious. I think Minerva and Albus are as well. This way nothing looks too off or like one person is doing it at the behest of another. We thought this was the best way to go about it,” Tonks told her cousin.
“We figure once they get everything, we can all sit down and see what's there then decide,” Remus added, chuckling at the show Lucius was putting on. What he didn't say was they thought it best to keep Minerva away from Harry for a while. With what happened the night before, that might be wise. It would at least give tempers time to cool down. Let Harry deal with the ones that weren't going to cause problems. That was for the best.
“Good. Just so we have something before the start of term, we'll be fine,” Sirius said with a pleased nod as he fed some of his bacon to Hobbes.
“And you're as bad with that cat as Harry,” Kingsley said with a deep chuckle.
“Alright, I admit it,” Sirius grinned, petting the purring Hobbes as Harry shared his eggs with the cat.
“That cat is going to be so fat he can't walk soon,” Kingsley snorted, shaking his head.
“Oh, he'll be fine,” Sirius assured them. Shoving his now empty plate away, he slipped an arm around Harry and pulled him close as he drank his tea.
Finishing up his breakfast and shoving the plate away for the elves to take care of, Harry glanced around. Seeing that no one was eating, he pulled out the brush that they had transfigured then began to brush out Lucius' fur. Almost immediately he began grinning at the sounds Lucius was making. Oh, he was purring alright. Loudly, in fact. He was also making some kind of meowing sounds while shifting all over, like he couldn't hold still because it felt so good and wanted all of his body done at once. The yowls that came after that were funny as well. Looking down at Lucius as he continued to brush him, he asked, “Does that feel good?” The loud meow as a response was enough to tell him it did.
Actually chuckling at what he was seeing, Remus shook his head. It was completely amusing. “Well, at least you don't have problems with him not liking being brushed. That'll cut down on the amount of shedding.”
Grinning, Harry continued to brush out the squirming Lucius, liking the reaction.
Shaking his head at what he was seeing, Sirius grinned. This was a riot. And he was going to have to see if Harry brushing Padfoot felt that good at some point. Focusing back to those around the table, he began asking what else was going on to make sure he stayed updated on that.
Pacing in the room he shared with the two, Lucius was trying to focus on the forms Moody had given to Sirius. They were fairly straight-forward standard forms from the Ministry, nothing complicated. He was just reading through them for anything that might be buried in the fine print. However, his mind wasn't on them. It was elsewhere. At first, he thought he was still in the almost euphoric haze that was brought on by the brushing. That—oh, nothing in his life had felt that good and he wanted Harry to do it again, plenty of times. However, the more he paced, the more he realized that something, somewhere, was trying to click into place. He just didn't know what it was. It was his assumption that it was something mentioned in the kitchen or by Sirius, but he didn't have a clue what it was.
Pacing faster, staring at the forms but not really seeing them, his mind played over what he heard. And what Sirius had told him had been said before they went down. As he did, his mind honed in on some of what Sirius said. Stopping as he played it over, his mind focused on one brief mention of something. Starting to smirk, his heart was pounding harder. Without knowing it, Sirius had given them their out. And it was absolutely perfect! Oh yes, this was good. It not only gave them the time they needed to get everything in place without having to rush, but was the perfect excuse for Sirius and Harry to just vanish. Not only that, but the Dark Lord didn't have to end up involved in any way, something that would have looked suspicious no matter what else was happening.
Resuming his normal speed with the pacing, though not bothering with the forms at this time, his mind began to work over just how to go about this and form the basics of a plan he knew would work. Oh, they could easily manage this one. It was a matter of the cards playing out just right. As they all worked well as a team, he was sure they could do it. They just needed all of it in place the best they could get before they put the plan in motion. Then they were out. Perfect. Utterly perfect!
